At first there was no where to sit! My brother and I just stood around for about 10 minutes which overall is not too bad. Then we saw a party bus pull up and most people cleared out. Having passed this bar a thousand times over many years, I decided to try it out. Since it opened in 1949, i guess I expected to be old & tired-looking. Quite the contrary. Light, airy (tall ceilings), very clear. I asked the bar tender what's their best sandwich. He instantly replied, "brisket" So I had one, along with two of the milder sauces he recommended. Quite good, as well as the fries that are available. The food menu is quite extensive - as are the beers on tap. Lots of "bar games" available. I liked this place and will return. read more

I work super close to this restaurant and have been called to dine here since I smell all the wonderful smells of their grill! I checked it out on the weekend and was presently surprised by how spacious the restaurant is and the vibe! It's very much a sports bar that you can come hang out with friends or family. The service was quick and nice! The food was good! I probably would not get their Mac and cheese again but the wings and fries were great! Having grown up in Texas, I know Texas BBQ well. Since this place claims to have it down, which is a fairly bold claim, I figured I would find out for myself. I liked the way you order: number of 6 oz. meat servings, choice of sides, and choice of sauces. I have to say, the selection of sauce choices was a little dizzying. There must have been 20. I just wanted basic sauces, so I picked Pete's Original, Spicy BBQ, and a 3rd one, some kind of bourbon sauce. I chose brisket, pork ribs, cole slaw, and baked beans. A quick rundown: - The cole slaw was pretty bad. I'm not sure why. The flavor wasn't very strong, but what flavor was there wasn't that good. - The baked beans were fantastic, some of the best I've ever had. Highly recommended. - The brisket had a couple bites that were superb, but the rest was dry and stringy. I was super disappointed, since the menu proclaimed the brisket one of the chef's specialities, which he brags about. Well, he'd better get it together if he wants to continue to brag about it, because great Texas brisket is NEVER dry. It is juicy and tender. You should be able to cut great brisket with just a fork (and a plastic fork if it's truly great), but I had to use a knife - and work pretty hard at it - with most of this stuff. - The pork ribs were very good. They tasted like they had a rub on them, and it was darn good. Definitely recommended. - The spicy BBQ sauce was excellent, just like sauces I've had all the time in Texas. - The Pete's Original sauce was weak and uninspiring. - The bourbon sauce was definitely not my cup of tea. I didn't like it at all. I hope they either improve the cole slaw or drop it from the menu (even though cole slaw is a BBQ staple). But if you can't get it right, get rid of it. And if they can get the brisket to be consistently juicy and tender, they will deserve 5 stars. I understand BBQ is not a common cuisine in the Twin Cities, so maybe I'm overly critical of this place. But they are the ones claiming to represent Texas BBQ, and if they will make some key improvements, their food can be on a par with great BBQ restaurants anywhere. read more

There are reasons this place is a 3.4. It's perfectly mediocre; at least the food. The bartenders were pretty attentive and the wait staff hustled, but shy goodness ends there. The brisket was dry and flavorless. The sauces were just meh. The potato salad was the worst I've had any where ever! Flavorless....like just completely flavorless. The beans were the only thing that were good. I actually chopped up the brisket in the beans, added both sauces, salt and pepper then a dash of hot sauce to make it tolerable. It's loud! Like every voice is modulated by 10. Probably because it's an old open space building so be prepared that the noise level will increase exponentially by 10x with each one person that comes in. Great place for the London Vikings game. Solid breakfast menu with their smoked meats. I went with the breakfast sandwich with brisket on an English muffin and it was solid. I've ate at 2 of the top 5(TX Monthly Annual Survey) TX BBQ/smokehouses/pits & a couple very good places in San Antone! So I was going to "check" this out! Bottomline: Alary's has "it" going-down. This Petey guy(their "Pit-Master) does a mighty fine job! I had the brisket was tender & flavorful(the centerpiece of any TX BBQ experience) & pulled pork with 2-sides; beans & potato salad. All tender & perfectly done, incl the TX toast. I Slept for 12-hours! 2-meats, 2-sides and 2 G&T served by the bartender Pope Leo(another Saint Paul native son) was a big meal for one person! This is a quaint little bar located on the outskirts of downtown St Paul. There is a commercial parking garage located right door and there is metered street parking available within a reasonable walking distance. The place seems a bit old and has a decent sized dinning area and bar seating with a full bar. You will also find a decent fenced in patio out back. They are TVs around the bar, as well as the dining area, and while I was there they were all playing the Minnesota Wild hockey game. There is a couple of pool tables, some pinball machines, a pull tab dispenser, dart boards, a digital jukebox and a video gambling game on an iPad device. A woman won big on that device while I was there. The bar prides itself on its tap beers. There have a ton of them. They also serve some food. I ordered a grilled cheese with a side of tots. It took about 15 minutes for me to get my food and it was pretty good. Very tasty and cheesy. I would recommend getting it. The bartender/server was very friendly and helpful. Very personable. This is a decent spot to catch a drink and get a quick bite. It is very low key and was very slow the day I was there. If you are looking for some action or a party type atmosphere, you may want to try somewhere else. read more

The best kept secret for any Wild game night. Park in the ramp directly attached to the bar. They validate your parking. A $6 ticket for the shuttle to and from the Xcel is then used for a discounted beer when the shuttle drops you off. The food- GREAT burgers and GREAT fries! Not so great coleslaw, The food comes out quickly. Friendly servers and bar staff. 30+ tap beers to choose from. Tons of TVs showing all sporting events. Clean bathrooms, huge outdoor patio. I love this place in downtown town St. Paul. No idea why a low-ish overall average, but try it out for the next Wild game, or any event at the Xcel. read more

When I lived closer to town, I was much more of a regular. What is there not to like about cheap beer and skimpily clad bartenders and beer tub servers? Back when I first started going here, it was always easy to get on the pool table or dart boards. No such luck anymore. It is heterosexual male butt-to-nuts any weekend or Wild game night. Most often these days, I am there before and/or after a Wild Game. Cheap shuttle to and from the Xcel. Gets super crowded on game nights, weekend or non-weekend. Had to wait for the third shuttle back tonight after the game. Seems like there is always more of a Thunderdome atmosphere for the Alary's shuttle than any other shuttle from any other establishment. Always, dude heavy. Why not five stars? Lack of food. Heggie's Pizza and the on and off food truck does not cut it for me. If they had a standard pub grub menu, this place would get my high five seal of approval. To each their own. It is definitely not for everybody. Manager is an absolute prick! We parked in the spaces right next to the building. Had our meal and came out to find we had been blocked in by a car. Went inside and the manager (?) said that it was employee parking only and it would cost me $20 for him to move his car so we could leave. He insisted there was a sign saying "Employee parking only". So I paid the extortion and we went out to move car. I asked the jerk where the sign was that said no parking and he walked out to the entrance and said "well, it's supposed to be here". He refused to refund the extorted money. What an asshole! I will never go here and will only badmouth this place until the day I die. The place was nice, except for the large pile of vomit in front of the entrance. There was only one server/bartender on duty on a Sunday afternoon. There were no big games, so I get it, but he was having a hard time keeping up. He was friendly and mostly got everything taken care of (sans the ketchup ask, since it wasn't on the table). My main problem was with my burger. It was basically raw. I'm not fussy about most things, but raw ground beef is vile. If I thought that it could have been fixed in a timely manner (which it obviously couldn't, due to staffing), I would have sent it back. It's sad, because it was on a list of top burgers in the Twin Cities, and it was not good at all. So...that was a shame. My husband got the Italian Beef sandwich, and was also disappointed. Came here on a Friday night before a show at around six and the place was completely empty aside from the two bartenders and maybe eight other people including my party. Which seems strange for a bar on a Friday night. The service, while not rude or anything, is fairly dismissive. You would think with nobody in there they would be ready to get you a drink with no issue. But they just sort of walked by without acknowledging us. I am not some sort of service snob either, but it was just weird. Food was actually really good, which is why I am giving it three stars. Shared some wings and tots. All really decent. Also, there is some sort of rewards program that gets you a free drink if you sign up. Every one in our party did it earlier in the day, and only two peoples actually worked. I showed her my text and everything saying I get a drink, and she said it wasn't in the system and I would have to come back. Stopped in and met a buddy for the Ohio State vs Wisconsin game. The bar had the game on all the TVs. Typically they don't turn the sound on, only for bears games, but the bartender ended up turning it on for us. ((Thanks Forest for being awesome)) Aside from the bar being extremely spacious inside, it has a great back patio as well. Now on to the food...I of course asked Forest what he would recommend, which I didn't go with any of his recommendations haha I ended up with a fried green tomato BLT which is exactly what I needed for lunch! So even though I hate the Chicago Bears and have to lie to people about going to Alary's lest I be judged as a borderline creep, I have to admit that I like me some Alary's. Besides the scantily clothed (clothed is probably an overstatement) women that appeals to my gender, Alary's has plenty going for it. Cheap beer during HH, affordable beer during non-HH times, a large tap list (30+ beers on draught), two of the only pool tables I've found in downtown, darts, foosball, a copious amount of TV's, usually decent music playing and free shuttles to Wild games are all aces in my book. Food selection is pretty much limited to Heggies' pizza, but they've recently added a hot dog cart during game days and weekend nights offering Vienna brand dogs, etc. I'm not sure why Alary's is classified as a dive bar on Yelp, it's really just a sports bar with an emphasis on T&A., but that's okay in my book. read more

The food menu is great with super appetizers and reasonable pricing After 4 they comp your parking in the ramp next door. They have a separate area blocked off if you prefer table service, games area, and pool. In the summer they have a beautiful outdoor Unfortunately the staff charge my accounts. Three times They refused my card My I husband who was embarrassed that they said my card didn't go through offered his The staff through which the card was charged 3 times before my husband' s card. Embarrassing and no apology from the owners or staff. I have no plans to ever return. I will track my card to make sure I want 3 times charged and find out if my husband card was also charged. Alary's is by far my favorite place in St Paul. The recently updated their kitchen and the food is outstanding. From the burger to the appetizers to the soups everything is amazing. I have had the buffalo Rueben many times and it is so delicious. The beer selection is diverse and extensive and very friendly and welcoming service. It is close to many amenities and is truly a gem. Driving down 94...3 hours to kill before we need to be at the airport...Alary's saved the day! Decided to try and find a place to watch the TN Titans game, I broke out ye old trusty Yelp app and did a search for sports bars and this topped the list. After a phone confirmation, we arrived and the bartender (friendly, but def not overbearing) was happy to put on our game. Food options=slim, just frozen pizza (hence the star deduction). Beer options=vast. Lots of drafts we can't get in TN, e.g., Hamm's, Goose Island. If I'm ever in St. Paul again, I'll be back. read more

I was noticing some old reviews that weren't very glowing. Then kitchen manager chef Mik German came along and all that changed. He posts pics of the daily sandwich, burger, and soup on FB that make you want to run right over. As a matter of fact I did twice last week. First time involved leftover corned beef in a soup. My first time there so I got the frickles, wow. I nibbled on some guacamole and chips. The chips looked kind of odd then I realized they were homemade. A very nice guacamole. The salsa is almost a marinara sauce consistency. Maddie was very attentive. I only nibbled on some of this and had it bagged cause I couldn't stop thinking about the soup, so I ordered another cup it was that good. It was definitely the thing to do. That was Monday, come Friday I was anxious to try fish and chips I never had. Mik sees to it that it's cod or it really doesn't count. I tend to agree. Walleye is its own entity. The chips, omg, I swear it was the first time I was aware I was eating potatoes. The flavor was purity. A delicious house made tartar sauce. I mixed some in with the coleslaw that needed some zing. And zing it did. I had no room for more fish that was delish. I started with a very thick chowder. I like it a little less thick, plenty of clams. At 11 I'm usually the only customer. In spite of this there's a lot of busyness with various people working around the place. They were actually kind of company for me, didn't mind it at all. The nicest part was Mik checking on me, making me feel like a VIP. Even the take out containers are cool and biodegradable. For a bar the bathrooms are immaculate.
