It's been a very long time since I've had Ethiopian food, and hadn't remembered how delicious it is. Or, maybe it's just that Goorsha is outstanding. Appreciate the ample vegan options, including Red Lentils with Berbere, Metin Shiro and Fosolia. Also loved the Sambusa with Deko (jalapeño relish) and Kasheka. Honestly, everything was deliciously savory, balanced in flavor and well spiced. Served with lots of injera to soak it all in. Casual and located right across from Brightleaf, Goorsha did not disappoint.

Nice ambiance, attentive service, and good food! I was craving Ethiopian food and this hit the spot! I do wish there was an option to get a massive platter with all of the vegan sides (rather than just 3)/more family style options. The lentil salad was deceptively spicy (prob the jalapeño seeds that got me) as a heads up. Next time I do want to try the beet root salad. Overall, good meal and will likely be back!

An amazing find for vegan/vegetarian food! I've always loved Ethiopian food and this was a gem! The owners are so nice and the food was delicious!! I loved the green sauce that came with the samosas I'd eat it with everything! The injera was delicious and all the vegetables dishes were tasty but my favorite was the one the left next to the jalapeño, I think it was a red lentil base but I forget the name. Plenty of parking, good prices and I can't wait to be back.

The food was absolutely delicious, well-spiced and hearty. For some reason, I always tend to stick to vegetarian dishes when I eat Ethiopian food, because the variety of vegetables and flavors is always on point... Goorsh's selection was just as ample and the injera was also plentiful... enough to enjoy with every single morsel of food. The honey wine was the perfect accompaniment to my dinner. The restaurant is small with a few tables, busy with hungry eaters but lively. When we got there (without a reservation) we were immediately seated and almost all tables were occupied. The only reason that I didn't give the restaurant 5 stars was because we felt very rushed by the server. On numerous occasions, the server tried to take away/wrap up the food while my friends were still eating. It was very odd how many times our server tried to hint at us leaving despite the fact that the restaurant wasn't completely full.

Goorsha is one of those hidden gems in Durham that you almost want to keep to yourself, but it's simply too good not to share. Tucked on the edge of the American Tobacco Campus, the restaurant offers a modern take on Ethiopian cuisine in a setting that feels fresh and intentional. The space is bright and warm with minimalist decor, clean lines, natural wood accents, and a sleek counter-style setup that's both approachable and stylish. It feels like tradition and modern flavor came together and found a perfect rhythm. The service is just as thoughtful. The staff is welcoming and attentive without being overbearing, happy to guide you through the menu and clearly proud of the food they're serving. There's an ease and confidence here that makes the whole dining experience feel smooth from start to finish. We started with the Sambusa, a flaky, golden pastry filled with lentils, onions, garlic, and jalapeños. It's crispy, savory, and has a slow-building heat that plays perfectly with the bright, spicy Deko sauce on the side. It's the kind of appetizer you instantly want more of. For the entrée, the Doro Wot was a standout. The chicken arrives stewed in a deeply spiced berbere sauce with notes of ginger, garlic, and cardamom. The drumstick is tender and flavorful, and the hard-boiled egg adds a subtle richness that soaks up the sauce beautifully. The Gored Gored is a carnivore's dream. Cubes of sirloin are lightly seared and coated in butter, cardamom, and berbere. The result is a dish that's bold, savory, and incredibly satisfying without being too heavy. To sip, I ordered a cocktail made with pineapple, ginger, and jalapeño. It's refreshing and slightly sweet with just enough kick from the ginger and chili to keep things interesting. It pairs perfectly with the warmth of the food. And for dessert, we had the dessert sambusa, filled with apples and drizzled with honey, then fried until crisp. It's sweet, comforting, and completely indulgent in the best way. Goorsha is the kind of spot that surprises you with how well everything comes together. The flavors are rich and rooted in heritage, but there's also a clear modern sensibility. It's casual, cozy, and completely worth coming back to.

Goorsha's food was flavorful and delicious. I thought the 3 vegan dishes we ordered complimented well with the chicken + egg dish. Each entree also came with a side- I chose the stuffed jalapeño while my partner chose the green lentils. I have never tried Ethiopian food before, so I thought that our whole experience was very unique. I wasn't sure what to make of the fermented bread, but I am glad that I tried it. The flavor profile was more sour than I was expecting. I'm not sure that our service was the best as I needed a water refill multiple times and it took a bit to get a hold of the waitress, but I did enjoy the food pacing. I'm glad we got our fried lentil apps first- if I come back, I'd get the same appetizer again.

Love this place!! Went recently for a weekend lunch and had a wonderful experience. The service is superb. The food is fresh and flavorful. The vibes are super casual with indoor and outdoor seating. And the prices are affordable. Some of the food items have more spice than others--the red lentils are spicy! I thoroughly enjoyed everything--my favorites were the sambusas, red lentils, and collards. This restaurant is very accommodating for all dietary needs!

This is a fun place to visit in Durham with great Ethiopian food!!! Service was a little slow but they were very busy- the doro wat was delicious and I thought it was the right amount of spice. Would definitely recommend people try it out!

Nice clean little restaurant with a few Ethiopian pictures by Brightleaf Square. Very friendly and helpful hostess/waitress. And ably helped me with the pronunciation of some of the menu items. Came by for an early supper and glad I did. First taste of this country's food. Very flavorful. I'm an omnivore but I went for the veggie option this time. Had a lager and a Sambusa app served with a green Deko sauce. The Sambusa was a little burnt but still good. I liked the sauce. I got the vegan sampler that has three options served with Injera bread (sponge flatbread made from teff that is very healthy) along with a side. From top to bottom in the picture of the plate is Metin Shiro (chickpea) Tekil Gomen (vegetables) Yemisir Kik (lentil stew) and the side of Azifa. Several of these were spicy but not too hot. All tasted great. And usually I'm not a fan of raw onions but the ones in the Azifa didn't have that raw bitterness. It's a great place for a meal. Check out their menu online.

This place is amazing! We went after after a strenuous hike and were famished when we got here. We reached reached at 12:30 pm on a Saturday, so the restaurant was a bit empty so we got very prompt and personalized service. We sat outside, it was a bit chilly but we enjoyed it nonetheless. The server who took our order did a very good job of explaining the menu items to us and explaining any queries we had. When the menu is short and sweet like Goorsha has, you can be rest assured that the food will be good. And that is exactly what we got. We ordered the vegetarian plate metin shiro, kek alecha and fosolia. By the end of it we were licking our fingers and wanted so much more! While we were heading out we saw there special tea service on a different table and will definitely be back for it and other menu items!

My first time trying Ethiopian food so I have no clue how to review it (had a great time eating but i couldn't tell you how it compares to other Ethiopian restaurants). Walked in around 8p on a Thursday night and was seated immediately for a table for 2. Started with the Sambusa- a MUST. I was afraid it would be spicy given the jalapeños, but it wasn't too much (I cant do spicy and I would eat this again and again). My friend and I split the Doro Wat and the Zilzil Key Wot, and got sides of the beet root salad and Azifa. I personally liked the beet root salad and doro wat the best.

If you enjoy exploring food experiences that are different from your daily fare, then this is place is a must for you! Fantastic award winning food that is full of flavor. This is one of the highly rated restaurants in Durham and provides an ethnic experience from Ethiopia. INSTRUCTIONS: Forget the silverware. You use your hands. Rip off a piece of the Injera and pick up some food and place it all in your mouth. Injera is a sour fermented pancake-like flatbread with a slightly spongy texture. It's best to order family style where everyone shares the different dishes instead of ordering one for each person. Pretty much everything has jalapeno peppers but heat level varies. Ask waiter to be sure you are ordering something in the spice range you are looking for. SAMBUSA - We will order this appetizer on every return visit. So good! Crispy pastry stuffed with lentils, onions, garlic, and jalapeños. Served with Deko sauce. The Jalapenos provided flavor but these were not super spicy. ZILZIL KEY WOT This was our favorite entree. Strips of savory beef stewed with berbere, garlic, onions, cardamom and ginger. The beef was super tender and was very flavorful. Spice level was medium and it did build as you ate more. ZILZIL ALECHA This was delicious. Strips of savory beef stew seasoned with turmeric, garlic, onions and ginger. Again, the beef was super tender. Spice level was low.

I was also happy to see that, on top of that, there are lots of gluten free options--it can be kinda hard to find vegetarian AND gf at a restaurant, so that's a big bonus! I was with a group, so we tried a lot of different menu items, and everything we ordered was, like, the best thing we'd ever eaten. I dream of the soul rolls! And wouldn't be right not to order sweet tea. Andrew and his staff treated our table like we were royalty, so not only was the food incredible, we had an amazing experience, too. You can really tell the love and care that has been put into curating such an authentic, cool spot. Impeccable vibes.

"Delicious Vegan Food by South Square in Durham"…read more (Yay, this is my 500th review!) I was surprised to see I hadn't already reviewed this place even though I've eaten there multiple times. (Someone else said the same, so I wonder if their entry got reset.) Sitting near the Target, this place isn't much to look at from the outside, but the food is a gem. I came on a Saturday evening at 6pm, and it was hopping, but there were still tables available. It was a beautiful day, so a lot of people chose to sit in the outdoor bench seating areas, making more total available. One can order with a person at the counter, online, or via a tablet at the counter. I opted for the Baked Chkn poppers plate: Seven baked Chkn (fake chicken) bites served over yellow rice, topped with green onions and served with your choice of two sides (I went for mac & cheese and collards). My dining partner got the chkn sandwich plate with the same two sides. We got a number and found a table. The wait felt a little long-- it was over 20 minutes to get the food. But it was SOOOOO good when we got it! The server also brought us our drinks so we wouldn't have to wait the full time for those, which was nice. My plate was delicious. The chkn bites and rice had a curry flavor to them that was SO tasty. The texture of the chkn was pretty close to some sort of meat, albeit maybe not identical to chicken. I did wish there were more bites, but they did advertise is properly. It also came with a homemade honey mustard that I used as a dip and drizzle. I really liked the mac & cheese, too- it had some heat/ kick to it. My dining partner loved her chkn sandwich too. It was also the "right" amount of food-- not so much that we had leftovers but enough that we weren't hungry when we finished. Parking is sometimes a bit tight, but I've always found a spot. And the price is decent-- the plates hover around $20 each, which is not bad for top-tier vegan foods with two sides. Overall, really like this place, and happy to come back, even though I'm not vegan (or even vegetarian)!

I tried this, but the system wouldn't even let me try until 30 days in advance, which I did, but was told I wouldn't need a reservation on a Sunday afternoon at 3pm for two people. I showed up and half the staff seemed really confused until I pointed to the tiered plates on other tables, then they said "ohhh the tea party!" lol. They got someone else, who said she wasn't sure she could accommodate us because we didn't have a reservation! I showed her the email on my phone which said "your reservation request was denied" because we supposedly didn't need one. I wouldn't usually have been so insistent but my friend had driven like 40 minutes to hang out and have this plant-based experience. She ended up relenting and bringing us the "tea party." The tea cups were the size of a shot glass and the tea bag selection included Lipton. I think it would have cost them basically nothing to give everyone their own teapot so you could actually seep your own flavor of tea, or even a bigger mug. It was just a little silly. They also start you off with a cute little labeled pitcher of lemonade- so cute but I wish they would have continued with this theme of labels or else just given us a pitcher of water because I was really thirsty by the end. The food that was made in house was delicious- the vegan pimento cheese sandwiches (bread tasted kind of stale though), the samosas and other savory pastries were delicious. The star of the show for me was the flatbread- veggie with some sort of aioli on it- I just loved it! Then there were store bought crackers and jelly (not chutney as we'd hoped/thought) and some store bought cookies. They had homemade vegan baked goods there, so I wish they had just tried a little harder to have some on hand for the high tea experience. The ambience was not great for a high tea experience. It's fast-casual so you order your high tea at the counter. Also they had the door open so it was really hot and the pollen was coming in. All in all, I would return but definitely for take-out, never for the high tea. The cost per person was not commensurate to the experience I had. That's a bummer because with some very small tweaks they could have a great niche!

Parking was tight but doable in the lot. The space is charming inside and out; the shaded patio has a nice vibe, though foot traffic to the entrance passes by those tables. Ordering is walk-up, and food is delivered to the table. Menu is broad with clear gluten-free indicators (huge plus). Coffee was dark and delicious, and service throughout was genuinely warm, knowledgeable, and fast -- easily 5 stars for hospitality. Getting to-go boxes was effortless and we were offered refills often. Food was a mixed bag. My wife had the gluten-free smoked salmon toast with avocado. She wished the veggies and tomato were grilled; the GF bread itself was very good, but the greens/tomato ended up pushed aside. I had the smoked salmon Benedict. The salmon portion felt light, and the hollandaise leaned more toward mustard than citrus and was a bit thin. Breakfast potatoes and veggies were nicely cut and well-seasoned but undercooked; same for the bacon, which tasted more tough than crisp. (I reheated the potatoes/veg at home -- flavor was there once cooked through.) Prices felt reasonable, ingredients seemed thoughtfully sourced, and the team's earnestness shines. With a little tighter execution (fully cooked potatoes/veg, crisper bacon, brighter/thicker hollandaise, slightly more salmon, grilled tomatoes), this would be an easy 5. I'll definitely be back -- I gave it a 3.7 but rounded it up to 4 stars for the service, coffee, and GF-friendly menu options.

Crispy tostadas loaded with tender shredded steak, beans, lettuce, and cream, and ask for a fried egg cooked medium so the yolk spills out perfectly. It came with pico de gallo and jalapeños on the side (I skipped those, but if you like a kick, i'm sure they will add great flavor). Came here after the Durham Farmers Market with a friend and wow this place was a surprise. …read more I went with the grain bowl and honestly it is one of the best I have had in downtown Durham. It is built on quinoa and rice with black beans and kale, then layered with corn salsa, tomato cortido, guacamole, and a creamy acevichado style sauce that pulls everything together. It is finished with a crunchy mix of pepitas, nuts, and grains. The balance is quite ideal in my view. My friend had the rotisserie chicken with two sides, kale and slaw, and it was just as impressive. Crispy skin, juicy inside, and really clean flavors. Simple food done right and GF friendly. Everything felt thoughtfully prepared. Prices land right where you would expect for the quality, roughly 16 to 21 dollars depending on what you order, and it feels worth it. My bowl plus side of dark chicken was plenty. A few notes. Parking is what you would expect for downtown, so plan accordingly. Service was solid and friendly, but nothing that stood out. The vibe inside is festive and relaxed, bright and open, and just a fun place to hang out for lunch. Porbably not a special occasion. I also suspect it could get loud when full. This is definitely going into my regular rotation. That grain bowl is going to be hard to pass up next time, so instead of replacing it I will probably just add a side or an empanada and start working my way through the rest of the menu.

We also shared a potato empanada that was recommended by another customer, which was also fantastic. The yuca fries and plantains were delicious. You also get a large amount of food for the price, definitely left us feeling satiated. Staff was very friendly, we will be back!

The space is a little tight but they do have outdoor seating which worked perfectly for our group. I also loved that they served cocktails in to go cups. The food was outstanding - a melty, crispy edged smash burger with a side of cheese tots, yum! We also got the chicken tenders and fries for our daughter and the bites I tried were delicious. This will definitely be a spot we visit when we want something quick and scrumptious if we are in the area!

We both had a classic burger (him with no pickles, me with no special sauce), shared an order of fries, he had an IPA and I got a blackberry mojito for about $40. The good: The fries were amazing (shoestring fries are my favorite)! The amount of pickles they put on it were phenomenal! The drinks we awesome and the vibe was outstanding. The employees were friendly and helpful. And I feel like everything was priced well and appropriately. The not so good: The meat was just meh and the onions were straight up burnt. Not caramelized, burnt. Overall, the burger was decent, just not great like we were hoping. We sat at our table for quite some time and had a few drinks. It was busy but never too crowded. There was a line but it moved quickly. I would reccommend this place to grab a quick bite before a DPAC show!

I came to visit Durham for the first time in a long time And was pleasantly surprised to see all…read morethe new and exciting restaurants. A friend suggested we try this place. We made a reservation and were seated upon arrival. Our host was Anthony, I think his name was, with a keen interest for ginkgo trees. He was very attentive, friendly and extremely helpful. He took her order and had some good suggestions. I was craving shrimp and grits which was probably the most unique shrimp and grits. I've had ever. Very distinct flavor and still very rich and familiar. The shrimp were large and juicy as well as remained crunchy overall cooked very well. We also had the summer tomato and burata salad which was really refreshing and delicious. My friend ordered the mac and cheese which is a hefty serving size. Definitely a shareable side or a main for one person. Our host came to check on us frequently, our Waters never went empty. Other hosts were also helping check in on us which was nice. The restaurant itself is large. Booth tables available, which made for a cozy environment. We ended the night with some brownie a la mode, which was the perfect dessert to have on a hot summer day. Overall the experience was amazing, great food and incredibly nice people. Definitely Miss miss the southern hospitality of Durham. Definitely recommend a try here at plum Southern kitchen & bar.

The menu had recently changed so we got to try quite a few new items. We tried the panzanella- sweet corn, red beans, heirloom tomato, patty pan squash, pea tendrills, and a roasted red pepper vinaigrette. This dish was my favorite of the night- small but shareable, entire dish was refreshing and all the flavors and textures went together so well. For dinner I ordered the roasted chicken and the baked mac and cheese with bacon. The roasted chicken was juicy and tasty, and a bit sweet with the bourbon ginger and plum reduction, but the mac and cheese seemed dry and overcooked. We also ordered the buttermilk cheddar biscuits- that taste slightly undercooked (in a good way), so the texture was soft and chewy (and amazing). The honey butter and large maldon salt granules made the biscuits perfect. They were so good we ordered a second order!! I would definitely return to Plum, for both the food and hospitality.
