Ok, first off the reason for the two stars is NOT for the food. It's for the drunk "mother" of the waitress who was shuffling around drunk as hell, slurring her speech into her cell phone. After she finished her drink, they continued to serve her! Her language was atrocious. It made our dining experience VERY uncomfortable. My first Yelp review! Gooney's is owned by 2 great guys I know so I'm gonna be biased as fuck, but the food is also really really good. Every time I go I usually get the steak, which in my opinion is the best in Amarillo. It's different than most steaks because it's "Asian styled" but I like it a lot. The steaks are always extremely juicy, juicier than a girl's... never mind. The pork ribs and pork chops are also very tasty. If you're looking to order an appetizer, the cheese wontons are the absolute bomb. Another plus is the location: right on Polk street in the heart of the nightlife downtown. So many nights of drinking at Bodega's or Butler's and them stumbling into Gooney's for a good late meal. read more

Appetizer: Jalapeño Bacon Cheese Wontons (filled with cream cheese, minced garlic, jalapeño, bacon & chives in a crispy flour wrapping) Mine: Pan Fried Noodles w/ Beef (egg noodles sautéed in house brew soy sauce with cabbage, onion & carrots - Twisted Thai His: Sunset Salmon (a 5oz sprinkled with house herbs alongside w/ stir fried broccoli, carrots, zucchinis, snow peas & choice of rice) - beer We came for a meeting of more than 15 people @ 7pm & they had the table set up but as we were walking in they set the table with utensils and menus (we walked in at our reservation time). The restaurant holds 150 people, its décor is strange as the walls were made of brick and even though they had photos of old Amarillo, it looked out of place. They also had lights string above to create and mimic outdoor seating and the music was all over the place (50's music, new age etc.). Besides our huge table there were a few other patrons sitting on the opposite side of the restaurant and a few people at the bar. Our server was nice and polite she was the only server throughout the ENTIRE restaurant, she did a good job at keeping up with everyone's order. I ordered a Twisted Thai (Thai tea with Malibu Rum & Vodka) & my boyfriend ordered beer. My twisted Thai wasn't that great, I wanted condensed or evaporated milk but they had neither, I had to settle with half & half. For the beer, she brought a chilled glass, which is always awesome. Our appetizer was delicious but honestly if you put anything in a wrapper and deep fry it, it should taste good. The cream cheese, minced garlic, jalapeño, bacon & chives in a crispy flour wrapping wasn't consistent with the on our plate, which was disappointing. When our main entrees came out (see photos) they looked appetizing however when we bit into them my "Pan Fried Noodles" tasted EXTREMLY BASIC I would describe it as Chow Mein from a Chinese Fast Food Restaurant. His salmon on Sunset Salmon was the only food he enjoyed, he said it had great flavor and the salmon was cooked perfectly. The rice was dry & the veggies were over cooked. According to their FaceBook page "Gooney's is a mixture of true authentic Asian cuisine and uniquely cooked fusion of traditional Asian dishes" honestly in my opinion it isn't traditional. Nice walk from Embassy Suites and restaurant came recommended. The ambiance was fun and eclectic. Wait time was a bit long for a Friday night. But the food was worth the wait! The fried wontons with bacon and jalapeños are fabulous! We ate the full plate and didn't have room for the burger we ordered. We did try a few bites though, and it was perfectly cooked with a bit of pink. Whenever we go to Amarillo we will be sure to stop back in for delicious food and nice service. read more

Well I didn't have a chance to rate the food because of the horrible service. We got there at 9:00 pm after a long day of traveling. Downtown Amarillo looked pretty cool and we are always open to Texas hospitality. However I guess the cool Asian fusion place didn't get the memo. We were sat after the waiter and I awkwardly locked eyes. He pointed at a table, I nodded, no words were exchanged. We were seated and given a one page menu . We casually read the menu and made our selections...and waited, and waited, and waited. To be fair it was busy, to the tune of maybe two other tables. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and waited a little longer. As it turns out, their resilience of not serving us won. We got up and walked out uncontested. First time at this place. I loved the atmosphere... staff was chill and friendly. They played 90s rock music which was an extra bonus. It was a toss up between ordering the Shrimp basil or sea bass. I ended up ordering the smothered sea bass and it was AMAZING! The sauce was so rich and savory. The sea bass was perfectly cooked, the veggies were fresh and the portions were perfect to not over engulfs. They were having Happy Hour which was a nice touch. Gooney's downtown on Polk is great! They're located in an old building with creaky wood floors and high ceilings, the walls are decorated with vintage photos from around Amarillo, it's almost like taking a step back in time. This place gets very sweet at night when the twinkle light canopy above the dining room makes itself known, romantic and quaint. The restaurant is small and operated by a very tight staff of just a few people. The main man, David, is basically always in house greeting and/or cooking, making conversation with the customers as he goes. Sometimes there is a bit of a wait in between courses, but the kitchen makes everything fresh to order, so it is well worth it as long as you're not on a short lunch break. We always start with the jalapeño bacon wontons, a Texan twist on the traditional cream cheese wontons, and they're GOOD! If you love them as much as I do, get an order of your own because you won't want to share. The spare ribs appetizer is a must have for any meat lover! They're smoky and spicy with the perfect amount of char around the edges - finger licking good! My favorite two dishes on the menu are the Sesame Chicken and the Steak Tacos (steak tacos are only served on certain days, unless you can butter David up *wink*). I always *want* to try new dishes because I know they will be good, but I almost always end up ordering one of those two standby favorites... Honestly you can't go wrong with anything you order. All in all, great atmosphere, clean, friendly service, delicious and fresh food, all for an extremely reasonable price, especially considering it is downtown. You know a restaurant is good when you're from Dallas, is Chinese, and still craves the food here. David and Daniel are the owners, and they can cook like no other. I usually order either the steak or the ribs, but you can't go wrong with anything else. My definite favorite when I'm not wanting meat is their fried rice. THE best fried rice you will ever have, no doubt about it. Their style is Asian-American fusion, so if you're looking for the juiciest, and honestly, best steak in town, go here. The prices are also very cheap for what you're getting. It's also a great place to go after a night out since they are open late and conveniently next to all the bars. Very nice place. Very friendly service. We started off with the bacon jalepeno wontons, they were very fresh and had an amazing flavor. I ordered the pork chops, they were cooked to perfection and they give you two giant pork chops (enough to share). Plate was 13$ and comes with two sides. I got stir fried veggies(delicious) and noodles (ok). For the price you cant beat it. Great flavor. As a plus they gave us a free egg drop soup(really good). I will definetly be coming back. This place is better than a good ole fashion truffle shuffle! Great Thai fusion food that's open late night. We were traveling home to Austin and stopped in Amarillo because of the weather and were glad we chose our hotel location due to it being close to Gooneys. The food and the staff were great! The wine selection was decent for Amarillo standards and I had the Asian tacos which were killer. I live in Austin Texas, the epicenter of fantastic taco trucks, and these were hands down the shiznat. I also had the cheddar bacon wontons which were pretty good. The owner of this place is really cool and he has the help of his parents to cook really good thai food. Do yourself a favor and eat here. read more

I NORMALLY love this place. we seriously order it at least once a week. we called tonight to place an order & the person that answered said that they weren't serving anything "off menu" tonight. my sister asked to speak with the manager & was told by her that they don't have chow mein {even though the other person said they do} & that they aren't serving it tonight. I called back & asked to speak with David {the owner} & the "manager" said, "he doesn't want to talk to you, & you don't need to ever come back here" & hung up on me. I, obviously, called back & asked for the owner again, & was told that they don't have time for me to call & that they won't serve us. we have been eating at gooney's & previously kitchen express for over 15 years. we started going to gooney's because david always welcomed us & said we could order our faves from the old menu. I don't know what's going on or if the "manager" actually spoke with him, but I cannot believe that anyone in the service industry would act so unprofessional & rude on the phone. hopefully this is an isolated incident. read more

The restaurant was relatively empty, except for a handful of people in the bar area who seemed to know each other. The few employees that were there also seemed to know these people, as they were spending most of their time conversing with them. After 20 minutes, the lone waitress came over to take my order. She apologized, and then went right back to socializing with the bar crowd. I read that they make everything fresh here, so I guess I understood when my main course came out, another 20 minutes later, before my spring roll appetizer. Maybe the beef was prepared fresh, but it was still ice cold, and had a rubbery texture. The spring rolls were ok, but nothing special. I'm sure this restaurant is great if you are one of the locals who spend a lot of time there, but for a first time diner, I recommend to choose somewhere else.- read more

I am only posting this because they have great reviews and the reviewers must be friends of the owner. It's mediocre at best. The food was ok, the wine was AWFUL. Service mediocre. I sat at the bar, female bartender who was not attentive and it was slow. I believe the owner may have been present and cooking or just someone who worked there and also knew the 5 others at the bar who did receive attention and were drunk.
