My daughter is ahead of all of her milestones, walking by 1, and is doing great in the next class. The ladies put so much love and care into engaging the babies and helping them learn and develop. The ratio of teachers to students is wonderful. When he needs help a teacher is available to guide him. But what really makes this school special is the people. From the moment you walk in you are met with smiling faces, a friendly greeting, the feeling you and your kid belongs. You can see that the teachers and the administrators are happy to be there and that feeling extends to the kids. To see my son skipping in and out of school is magical. The school becomes part of your child's and your community. There are lots of special days and activities to get the kids excited to be a part of something. Our family has been with Merryhill, now, for two years beginning with Mrs. Bailey in PreK (such an amazing teacher), Mrs. Zellis in TK (a wonderful teacher who created a family environment in her class while still building academic skills needed for kindergarten), and now with the lovely and strong academic classroom environment that Mrs. Toranzo and her colleague Mrs. Jordan have created this year. In addition the STEM teacher, Mrs. Anderson, and the Spanish teacher are excellent. Finally, Ms. Kimberlee is so welcoming and so supportive of all the parents each day. From my first contact with the staff and administration, you could tell this place was about providing a nurturing and excellent environment to the children. This school really does foster diversity. It's not just words that are used in advertisement. They foster those values in the classroom and everyone is made to feel included in all they do. In short, they practice what they preach. The academics are excellent. I'm a believer in giving children a balanced learning environment. Hundreds of hours of homework does not make a child enjoy learning. I like that there is work time and play time appropriate for the age. And honestly, at these grade levels, too much homework equates to extra work for the parents. This school chooses an appropriate amount of work for each grade level. My son has thrived since moving to this school. FLA has been a true blessing to our family. My child's kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Margolis, was phenomenal. She was upbeat, professional, engaging, and it was obvious she genuinely cared about the students and loved teaching. Unfortunately, things have steadily gone downhill since then. First grade did not meet the expectations I had hoped for, but I never imagined the experience would decline this much. Mrs. Brown is honestly the worst teacher I have ever encountered. She has a very flat affect, lacks engagement with the students, and struggles to teach material in a way children can actually understand and retain. My child has consistently been an honor roll student, so this is not an issue of capability or effort. What has been equally disappointing is the lack of support from administration. The headmaster, Mrs. Johnson, is not approachable and appears completely uninterested in parent concerns or feedback. Attempts to communicate issues feel dismissed rather than addressed. It is incredibly disheartening to watch a school that once felt nurturing and academically strong become such a frustrating experience for both students and parents.

In the beginning I thought it was my daughter's problem -- she just didn't want to leave me. But after talking with the headmaster, I suddenly realized: it wasn't my daughter's issue -- it was their teaching philosophy. 1. They believed my daughter couldn't control her emotions, and they expected her to -- but she's only three, her brain isn't developed for that yet. Expecting a three-year-old to "control her emotions" is like expecting a one-year-old to control her bladder -- it's a physiological development issue. And the headmaster should know that. 2. My daughter didn't know any English when we first enrolled her. Within four months she could understand all the teacher's instructions and even speak short sentences. Yet the headmaster still said she wasn't speaking "long sentences." As an early-childhood educator, she failed to recognize this progress in a child entering a completely foreign environment. 3.Once she cried so badly that the headmaster came over to comfort her, but my daughter refused to talk to the headmaster and threw herself into the arms of her teacher. The headmaster concluded that my daughter lacked the normal ability to communicate. But my daughter had only met the headmaster twice -- she was basically a stranger to her -- so when she was sobbing, she rejected the stranger and ran to the teacher she knew. To me, that is a completely normal reaction -- yet in the headmaster's eyes, it meant my daughter "couldn't communicate properly." 4.The headmaster claimed my daughter would cry loudly, scream, and stomp her feet in class. But from a very young age she never behaved that way; even in the first two months at Challenger she only cried quietly out of fear -- never screamed or stomped. Only after being moved to a different class and failing to adapt to the new teacher's methods did she show those intense reactions. She was using her own way to cry out for help -- yet the headmaster and teachers didn't see it. At home she also became moody and unreasonable. Because of what the headmaster said, we decided to withdraw her. We enrolled her in a new school, and I was worried she might not adapt -- new environment, new teachers, new friends. But after only a few scattered days of crying, she quickly grew to love school! In talks with her new teacher, I, as a parent, deeply felt the teacher's love for children, her understanding and acceptance. She treated my daughter like a child -- a real child. That's why my daughter was able to feel safe and confident so fast. Now she's been at the new school for three months, and every day she's very happy -- her English communication is no problem at all. This has only strengthened my conviction: my daughter was never the problem -- it was Challenger's teaching philosophy.

In all of those years, I have never felt strongly enough about a school decision to leave a negative review. Unfortunately, only three weeks into this school year, I am extremely disappointed and concerned by some of the changes being made. Over summer break, the school replaced the carpet, and we have now been told that students in grades 1-8 can no longer have snack time. I genuinely do not understand how removing an opportunity for children to have a small snack during a long school day is in their best interest. Adults working an eight-hour shift are given breaks and a lunch period because we understand that people need time to eat, reset, and refocus. Why would we expect children to function differently? Hungry students are not going to be more focused or productive in the classroom. What makes this even more frustrating is that the new carpet policy appears to affect more than snack time. Classroom birthday and holiday celebrations are also being taken away or significantly limited. Lunch has been suggested as an alternative for birthday celebrations, but students already have a very short lunch period. That is hardly enough time to eat their meal, let alone pass out treats or goody bags, sing Happy Birthday, or participate in a small classroom activity. Not every family wants to simply send a goody bag home. Part of what makes elementary school special is being able to celebrate those little moments with classmates. I understand wanting to protect an investment in new carpet, but when protecting flooring begins taking priority over experiences and routines that benefit students, I think it is reasonable for parents to question whether the right decision was made. Flooring should serve the school not dictate the student experience. This is particularly disappointing because I truly love the staff at this school. I love this school enough that I am involved with the PTSO and willingly give a good amount of my free time volunteering, not only for my own children's classrooms, but for the school and its students as a whole. I would not invest that time if I did not genuinely care about this community. I have also noticed a difference in the overall atmosphere this year. Staff members seem more rushed and overwhelmed, and some of the warmth and happiness that has always made this school feel special seems to be missing. I obviously cannot speak for individual staff members or say exactly what is causing that change, but as a longtime member of this school community, the difference has been noticeable and honestly very sad to see. Meanwhile, there are areas where changes would be incredibly valuable particularly the car loop, drop-off, and pickup process. I wish the same level of attention being given to restricting snacks and classroom celebrations were being directed toward issues that have a much greater impact on families every single day. For years, I have happily supported and voted for this school as one of the best. This will be the first year that I cannot do that without hesitation. I sincerely hope the administration listens to parent feedback and reconsiders some of these decisions. I am writing this because I care about this school, its staff, and its students. After being part of this community for more than a decade, it is incredibly disappointing that this is the first time I have felt compelled to publicly express this level of concern. I truly hope this school year moves in a more positive direction and that decisions going forward prioritize what is best for the students and the people who make this school what it is.
