In the beginning I thought it was my daughter's problem -- she just didn't want to leave me. But after talking with the headmaster, I suddenly realized: it wasn't my daughter's issue -- it was their teaching philosophy. 1. They believed my daughter couldn't control her emotions, and they expected her to -- but she's only three, her brain isn't developed for that yet. Expecting a three-year-old to "control her emotions" is like expecting a one-year-old to control her bladder -- it's a physiological development issue. And the headmaster should know that. 2. My daughter didn't know any English when we first enrolled her. Within four months she could understand all the teacher's instructions and even speak short sentences. Yet the headmaster still said she wasn't speaking "long sentences." As an early-childhood educator, she failed to recognize this progress in a child entering a completely foreign environment. 3.Once she cried so badly that the headmaster came over to comfort her, but my daughter refused to talk to the headmaster and threw herself into the arms of her teacher. The headmaster concluded that my daughter lacked the normal ability to communicate. But my daughter had only met the headmaster twice -- she was basically a stranger to her -- so when she was sobbing, she rejected the stranger and ran to the teacher she knew. To me, that is a completely normal reaction -- yet in the headmaster's eyes, it meant my daughter "couldn't communicate properly." 4.The headmaster claimed my daughter would cry loudly, scream, and stomp her feet in class. But from a very young age she never behaved that way; even in the first two months at Challenger she only cried quietly out of fear -- never screamed or stomped. Only after being moved to a different class and failing to adapt to the new teacher's methods did she show those intense reactions. She was using her own way to cry out for help -- yet the headmaster and teachers didn't see it. At home she also became moody and unreasonable. Because of what the headmaster said, we decided to withdraw her. We enrolled her in a new school, and I was worried she might not adapt -- new environment, new teachers, new friends. But after only a few scattered days of crying, she quickly grew to love school! In talks with her new teacher, I, as a parent, deeply felt the teacher's love for children, her understanding and acceptance. She treated my daughter like a child -- a real child. That's why my daughter was able to feel safe and confident so fast. Now she's been at the new school for three months, and every day she's very happy -- her English communication is no problem at all. This has only strengthened my conviction: my daughter was never the problem -- it was Challenger's teaching philosophy.

My daughter has an IEP program and this was the school we picked for her to be at, after an initial…read moretour. My daughter is 3 years old and had never attended any prior school or daycare. The first day she cried when I dropped her off (as is expected) and was still crying when I arrived to pick her up. That was disappointing but hopefully things would be better the next day.. The second day she cries again as I drop her off and she's crying, once again, as they are walking out from pickup. I see her fall down as she's being walked over to us (she was new to wearing the backpack for school and no assistance was being given to her). When she fell, rather than immediately help her, her teacher visibly sighed and shrugged before she slowly bent over to help her. I ask the teacher how she did and she said that she cried the whole time. She suggests that I enroll her in some sort of "group play" because she only wants to be with the two adults in the class. I remind her that it's only day 2 and this is new to her. I ask her if she ate her snacks and she said that she doesn't know. They don't watch them eating snacks. THEY DON'T WATCH 3 YEAR OLD CHILDREN EATING SNACKS. Finally, the last straw for me was she made some comment about her being nonverbal. I corrected her and told that she isn't nonverbal, she is shy initially but she talks when she's comfortable. I asked her if she's even looked at her IEP and she ignores me and pretends to talk to my daughter about how she tricked her into thinking she's nonverbal. This was day 2. I pulled her out of that school and enrolled her into a different school. The first day at that school, she cried as I dropped her off. An hour after dropoff, the teacher texted me a picture of my daughter happily playing in the classroom.

One year my daughter had 3 different teachers. Each year they seem to have all new teachers and staff is constantly coming and going- other than about half of the teachers who are all related to the owner. The school is family owned which can contribute to a family feel of the school overall. However, if you are not related to the family, personal friends with the family, or volunteer with the school, your child and your family will be outcasted and excluded. Only some kids are invited to play sports. Kids they do not want on their sports teams are not even invited to try out. The principal/owner Mr. Diller regularly yells and swears at the kids. He is demeaning and borderline abusive to the students. Candil Hall also allows bullying and in some cases promotes or praises students who bully. Children who are bullied are not protected by the school. They get no help even when they feel so unsafe they don't want to go to school. Student to student threats are not taken seriously. It's incredibly disappointing the lack of concern and support shown to children at this school. While my child did leave there more advanced academically, she also left there with psychological trauma, fear, distrust of schools and teachers, and overwhelming feelings of confusion because she felt so unsafe in the place that she should feel the safest. I regret ever sending my child to this school and wish I could undo all of the trauma Candil Hall has caused her. Additionally, if you ever have any issues with the teachers, the staff, the family, etc. you will be talked negatively about and they will spread rumors to other parents about you. This school is not worth it, please look elsewhere.

We did everything they asked. She was "super smart" (their words) so they wanted to keep her, but she couldn't handle being with the group. Though she was still listening/learning from afar (again their words) They tried to physically force her resulting in major meltdowns. They ended up kicking her out. They made me feel like a failure of a parent and my child wasn't exactly excited to experience school again after that. With the assistance of CCSD and her doctor she was diagnosed with high functioning autism. She's doing great in a general education classroom and still super smart. Whether it has to do with education or healthcare (both of which were significantly better in Orange County). I enrolled my child at Shenker after talking to all the parents I would meet at the park in my neighborhood who would sing the school's praises. I am happy to say, Shenker lived up to my expectations. My child does not speak English as his primary language, and I was worried about how that would affect him. Also if I might add, I would get unsolicited comments from other educators concerning my refusal to speak English to my child at home. I am an educator ( I have a Masters in education and another Masters in school counseling) and I knew he would pick up English just as I did. Upon meeting with Dr. Sharon, he agreed with my approach concerning my son learning two languages, and put me at ease. My son has greatly improved academically and socially at Shenker. He is so happy to go to school, and everyone in the front office knows his name, as they do with ALL the students that attend their school. Dr. Sharon has truly been a joy to work with, and I see how much he cares for his staff and for his students at school. He knows every student's name and he works with every family to accommodate their needs. I honestly believe this school's success comes from the top down. All the kids parents and teachers where there walking with the kids. My baby wasn't in not one of those pictures to the point I had to call the school and ask was she even there. That upset me so bad and really there is nothing they can say to make me understand this.
