A Nostalgic, Must-Visit Dessert Destination in Old Town Scottsdale…read more Our party of six visited the Sugar Bowl for dessert following a friend's birthday dinner. Upon our arrival, we were accommodated immediately and seated without any delay. The parlor features a wonderful, nostalgic aesthetic reminiscent of the late 1900s. Its menu is remarkably expansive, offering an impressive variety of options that goes well beyond what one might typically expect from a traditional dessert establishment. The service we received was patient and polite. While one of our table's orders was initially overlooked, the staff corrected the mistake instantly as soon as we brought it to our server's attention. As the name implies, the menu leans heavily into decadent, sweet treats; those looking for lighter or tart options like yogurt variations will find limited choices, but the indulgent selections are perfect for traditional dessert lovers. The surrounding neighborhood adds significantly to the appeal, offering an excellent Old Town atmosphere filled with art galleries, historic shops, and artifacts. If you are visiting the nearby Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA), enjoying dinner in the area, or simply taking an evening walk, I highly recommend stopping by the Sugar Bowl for its unique historical charm and experience.

I considered several options in Phoenix area to review, but I decided to go with the iconic Sugar Bowl in Old Town Scottsdale. It's been in business since the 1950's and has been a staple for 7 decades in Old Town. The inside is 1890's decor of pink & white wallpaper/decor like an old fashioned ice cream parlor. They have a bar area and standard seating. I remember I first went here when I was in high school in late 90's/early 2000's. Ice cream was always top notch. I used to get the Buster Brownie, which was this big brownie sundae with vanilla ice cream, goeey marshmallow topping, whipped cream, & cherry on top. It was awesome! I loved that way back then. I got lunch there once or twice; pretty good sandwiches, but the real highlight is the ice cream. My most recent visit was in Jan. 2022 with my dad. We decided to pop in for ice cream. It was as delicious as I remembered.

I love that they let you sample as many as you'd like before deciding! Service was quick, but we never felt rushed while trying flavors and figuring out what we wanted. The waffle cones taste SO fresh because they literally are!! Someone was making them right there while we picked our ice cream. Such a nice touch! We shared a Double Dough and Darkest Chocolate together in a fresh waffle cone and it was so, so good. Did not get a picture because we ate it so fast! Easy parking, great service, delicious ice cream, and fresh waffle cones. Definitely 5 stars!

I sampled at least 4 flavors and they didn't seem too annoyed with me. My issue with Jeni's is primarily I think all of their ice cream across the board is too sweet (I know, it's dessert... I just really feel that dialing the sugar to 2/3 the amount would be perfect). All of the flavors I sampled would have been great. I ultimately ordered Buttercream Birthday Cake and Milkiest Chocolate, with the Buttercream Birthday Cake really pushing my boundary. Nonetheless enjoyable outing on a really hot July day. I'd go back to this location, bearing in mind it's not my favorite ice cream in the world. Also I must add, it's quite expensive. Buying for me individually, doesn't do too much damage, but for say a family of 4, this would be a pricey outing.

I've gone to the central location a bunch but this was my first time at the old town spot. It was pretty quiet and there's a bit more seating inside at this location which is nice. I tried both and it was hard to pick but I went with a single scoop of black sesame as I never see that flavor anywhere. It was so creamy with a nutty, coconut flavor and not too sweet. The staff was very helpful.

We tried two different flavors and I have to say that both of mine were delicious--really hard to pick which one is better! I went with the chocolate peanut butter cup and the dark chocolate, the two really complimenting each other very well. After hearing the backstory of the family that started the business, I would definitely put Cimmino alongside some of the gelato that I tried in Italy. Staff was friendly and while the space is unassuming, it was a perfectly fine place to hang out until venturing out into the desert heat. So why four stars instead of five? They don't do shakes and that's always my favorite way to enjoy gelato.
