I was out for a Sunday motorcycle ride and went to look at Frenchman's lake. After that trip, this was place was on the way and stopped for a snack and drink. As far as general stores go, this place was great. Good, quick, hot food! A great little coffee bar in the back, and a maze of areas to wander to find that one thing you forgot before your trip to the lake. Did I mention Martha Jane's coffee shop? While I didn't have the coffee there, it seemed closed even though the store was open, it was a quiet place to sit, enjoy my snacks and root beer. 5 stars for this ma and pa store. They had everything from camping gear to candles and gifts to fruits and veggies and selection of meats to general grocery items. They had a coffee bar and bakery as well. A cinnamon roll caught my eye and upon asking the clerk the price she said it was 5.99. It looked amazing and she said it was freshly made today. I was not impressed. The cinnamon roll was hard and dry on the inside. I feel like I was misled. Nothing was marked with dates on the package so I took her word. Just because it appears to look really delicious doesn't mean it is. 3 stars on the cinnamon roll. I make them homemade often and no way was it made that day. SMH. Maybe try not to assault your customers, I came in a few months back while I was pregnant and after waiting in line and paying for my items, I left the store, got in my car and as I was backing out of my parking space when Matt Goodwin suddenly rushed from inside and ripped my car door open, and screamed in my face to the point of spitting on me that he would call the police on me if I ever returned. For buying a sandwich from the deli? That's a crime? When I asked for a reason he said " I don't have to have one" which is no way to run a business. Small town country store. I eat her most Thursday's. Always good! You have got to try the jalapeño smash burger! The tritip sandwich with Smokey cheddar in a jalapeño roll is excellent! The store is always very clean and tidy! Family owned and operated business! Donna behind the meat counter is excellent at her job. She's a very busy woman but is always available to help. The coffee shop serves up some great brew! Grab a pastry with your coffee and sit in the lounge area and visit with friends! They are an animal feed store. We were so amazed when we walked into this store! They literally offer a little of EVERYTHING you may need. They have a small deli...good selection of groceries...sporting goods...home decor items...a coffee shop with pastries etc. but we were mostly impressed by their beer selection! I've been in Goodwin's a number of times in the past and have always been greeted and assisted by a friendly staff. Not today. I entered and I was greeted. I moved to the soft drink section and picked up a 12 pack of soda. I walked to the cash register to pay and was drawn to the fresh baked cinnamon rolls. I placed the 12 pack on the counter near the cash register and moved to grab a cinnamon roll for my wife. I brought the cinnamon roll to the counter and decided a steak would be great for dinner. I moved to the butcher counter, which was not attended to. After a couple of minutes a male employee walked by and I indicated I needed assistance. The employee said loudly "Need help at the meat counter" and he kept walking. A female employee came out from the back and informed me I should have rang the bell atop the counter (which I didn't notice) to keep her "out of trouble" with her boss. I stated I didn't know I was to ring the bell for service. She informed me "next time" I would know. She pleasantly filled my requests. As she was doing so, I saw another older male employee go to the register where my soda and cinnamon roll were still sitting. He rang the items and placed them and a receipt in a plastic shopping basket. He put the basket on the floor. After I received my steak, some ground beef, and some chorizo, I walked to the cash register where my basket was still sitting on the floor. The same older male employee re-approached the counter and said "What do you need?" I told him the basket items were mine in addition to the butcher shop items I held in my hands. The employee then said, "You can't just leave items on the counter. The baskets are there for a reason." He rang the remainder of my items, obviously irritated and asked me if I wanted a receipt. I ignored the rude employee who just chastised me for leaving a 12 pack of soda and a cinnamon roll on the counter near the register. I dropped the butcher items into the still sitting on the floor basket without the rude employee thanking me. I left. I'm no longer shocked, at my age, by crappy customer service and rude employees. I am shocked that it occurred at this business as they have always been polite and helpful before today. Here's a news flash for you rude ,older, male employee, I CAN AND DID leave items on the counter so you can shove your "baskets are there for a reason" lesson. I might stop by periodically to place items on the counter and then leave just to send you into a tizzy. I'm just kidding....I won't be back in your store any time soon after today. Goodwin's General Store is generally awesome! Haha I know cheesey, but it really is. So, I love stopping here before we head over to Frenchman Lake because they have just really done a great job renovating the place. They have a really nice lunch menu. The chicken tenders and tri-tip sandwiches are very tasty. We got some chocolate fudge with it because that's how we roll. The staff there are very nice and friendly. They have a nice seating area in the back, with a coffee shop. Very nice area to hangout. They have a little fire place there, plenty of seating, and they have a small grocery store. They also have a pump station for fuel. This place really has it all. Oh, small tip they have a great meat selection too. I usually but some steaks before I go camping. It is fantastic! They have a fish section as well and you can buy most of your fishing items needed here. I remember before they renovated it was a bit cramp in here but you really have to stop by and see what they have done with the place. It is pretty awesome. Bathrooms are outside, so you will have to ask for the key. Parking can get a bit messy because they have a small parking area but for the most part you will usually find parking because most people are just in and out of the store. I would recommend if you fueling up done leave your vehicle there because there are only 2 pumps. So, don't be that person to block the only 2 pumps. Other than that this store is a great stop before our after your little adventure to Frenchman Lake or even a respite from the road. Thanks for reading my review. read more

As a Census Enumerator, I travel a lot and visit many bathrooms-not part of my job, rather a consequence of living so long - These bathrooms were better than many models homes. What a delightful oasis this turned out to be on a warm July afternoon of 2020... We received a referral from a reliable source in Beckworth (village to the west} that Goodwin's was a great place for a local lunch break... Sure enough, our group of 5 adults descended on this true "oasis" at 12:30 PM and we all had custom made sandwiches, soft drinks, and homemade sweets as we sat down and socially distanced at two outdoor picnic tables in the shade within 20 minutes... Everyone making sandwiches to staff in the coffee & dessert parlor were ALL wearing face coverings and treated us with kindness! After my colleagues finished their lunches and we said our goodbyes, I stayed behind for another refreshment and sat inside to convene a previously scheduled business Zoom meeting with my accountant. The General Store/ Coffee Shop WiFi worked great and despite the busy afternoon, the noise level was never a problem as they continued to wipe down tables and entertained tourists, local families to highway workers on break. read more

In a town the size of Chilcoot, this place is honestly amazing. I've been here half a dozen times while visiting some friends that live in the area, and I'm always impressed by the selection of items they fit in the space. There's a cute little coffee shop hiding in the back, that had fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies the Saturday I was there (naturally, I had to buy 2, and they were still warm, moist and freakin' delicious!). On top of your standard grocery stock, they carry fishing supplies to grab on your way to Frenchman's, a ridiculous selection of fudge, a decent variety of produce, fresh meats & cheeses, and even have a sandwich counter that includes a hot case with chicken strips, joe-joe's, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, etc! Oh yeah, the beer choices are awesome too, from good ol' Coors, Bud, and your other big-name's to a respectable offering of craft beers, there's something for everyone at your shindig. Soaps, jewelry, clothing and other gift-type items round out the merchandise available at Goodwin's. There's gasoline available out front, too, since the next closest stations are in Portola and at Hallelujah Junction. Last but not least, don't forget to grab a "Chilcoot'n" sticker to show off your small-town pride. The staff in the general store were fantastic! The store & coffee shop are beautiful. However, the service from the woman at the coffee shop was terrible. She acted as though we were inconveniencing her. She was in a conversation with someone she was familiar as they knew her name was Nicole. She was not wearing a name tag. She rolled her eyes when I asked a question about the menu. She made no eye contact when telling how I owed for our drinks, which she slammed on the counter. I understand that everyone has bad days but perhaps customer service is not a fitting profession for Nicole. I would absolutely recommend the general store, but NOT the coffee shop. read more

I was a recipient of very poor customer service after an unfortunate event at their Texaco gas pump. After two attempts with the card reader and one attempt with Apple Pay, all three of which appeared to be successful, until they weren't, with five dollars cash in my pocket, I went inside to pre-pay the attendant. I reported the electronic issues - three electronic payment approvals followed by the screen blacking out forcing multiple attempts - to the clerk, who didn't seem too interested. When I returned to the pump and began the mechanical process of getting gas, the meter was moving but there was obviously no gas going through the hose. The meter didn't even slow down for the last 20cents like normal. Thinking that maybe it was such a smooth operation that it was undetectable, I turned the key in the ignition and noted that the electronic gauge was telling me I had not any more gas in my tank than when I had started. With 13 miles to go until the next gas station and 13 miles left in my gas tank (the reason I stopped here in the first place), I knew the pump hadn't worked. When I reported the incident to the attendant he insisted that it was impossible for their system to have made an error. Upon my adverse reaction, he said, well, I can't just give you five dollars. To which I responded, I'm not asking you to give me five dollars, I'm asking you not to take my five dollars! He called the owner, Matthew Goodwin, who instructed him not to refund me, but said he would call me later the same day. He did not. Obviously, I am very disappointed with this experience. What did they think, I'm going to steal five dollars worth of gas? Who does that?! If anyone is going to hustle gas, wouldn't it be more than five dollars' worth? I will be returning to this establishment on a very regular basis until this is resolved. I will report back to Yelp each time. Stay tuned. read more

It is clean, super cute and well staffed. There is a general store, gift area, coffee area and sandwich shop all branching off the main store. Passing by this little town in the middle of nowhere, you would assume that this is probably one of those little family-run micromanaged businesses where mom, dad, and kids run the registers and always have a depressed look on their face like they hate their life and want you out of their store as soon as you've purchased your pack of gum or cold hotdog.
