I really appreciated all the reviews and pics from other Yelpers... we had to roust ourselves off the couch and away from the roaring fire to go secure some provisions for a recent week-long escape from the city... We went late in the evening, the store was mostly deserted, but they were practicing very safe COVID precautions. Leonard's has just about everything you could want, just go in knowing it's not Safeway. They have all the essentials and more, not a giant produce selection, but since it's a small market, they stock what they can sell and not waste, so no complaints from me! A young tall blonde kid was checking out my grocery's and I handed him a 100 dollar bill normally and when it came to giving me my change he THREW it at me. Before walking up to the counter he was smacking an elder women's butt repeatedly, and that is very inappropriate at your work space. While I do live in Graeagle... and LOVE THE GE market... I often need ingredients and things that they don't carry or are closed. Leonard's is great... saves me a trip to SW in Quincy! Nested in the Palmas National Forest near Nakoma, Ca ( between Tahoe and Reno) this market is the end game! It has everything from organic produce, butchered meats, groceries, and wine and spirits. Want to feel like you are local? Just visit the market and the staff will make you feel like family. Ample parking and a feeling like you have shopped your local market. In the summer Leonard's is part of our provisions procurement roundup on Fridays. Starting in Downieville, we drive to the Sierra Valley Farmer's Market (stopping at Yuba Pass to let the doggies out to run around the big, beautiful grassy meadow), then round up to Portola for gas and Leonard's, then back down through Blairsden for lunch, and then over Gold Lake Highway with maybe a small stop at one of the lakes for a doggie water romp, and back home. Leonard's never disappoints. They have amazing meat options for meat eaters...including in the frozen section the choices include elk and bison burgers. You'll find a little Plumas County, a little bay area to be had in all the sections. Honestly, they've done a great job. They carry a frozen key lime pie that is delicious. Plus more Ben & Jerry's flavors than I've seen anywhere. I make dog food that includes sweet potatoes as an ingredient - no problem getting them here. They are having trouble procuring liver, though...maybe they'll find some...it's another ingredient that's part of the dog food. Anyway, I can almost guarantee you'll find what you need. read more

Prices are double any other store. I would rather drive 40 miles and spend extra on gas than be gouged by ridiculous prices. This is a lower income community it's criminal what Leonard's charge these people. The selection is poor, cooling system is out of order more than not. Lots of products are expired, poor quality veggies and usually not much meat. This is managed I was told by someone in Oregon. I would totally join in a Boycott until prices come down. Even if you have everything with you on roadtrip, there's something you certainly didn't need that you need to buy when you pass the last market before you disappear into a more remote area to get off the grid. In my case, on this trip, those items were Cheez Its and Peanut M&Ms. As for a rating here, I'm totally torn here. Going on the lower end just because I feel like the product mix is a bit off AND the checkout service was slower than it needed to be. Leonard's is a market in a small town in Northern California, and for what it is, they seem to have just about everything one could want or need when travelling through the area for some camping, fishing, or recreation of any kind. They have lots of dry goods, camping essentials like ice and firewood, booze and beer, cold dairy, and even some meats for your grilling pleasure. But when I went looking for a big bag of Peanut M&Ms, they were nowhere to be found. They had the small impulse packs, sharing size (only slightly larger than the other) and a large bag of fun size packs, but no "enjoy at home in multiple sittings" kind of packages available. There really wasn't even a candy aisle I could find to be honest. As someone coming from a larger city, I think my expectations are probably a bit unfair. So take this review with SEVERAL grains of salt. Overall though, and because it's really the only full-service store you pass, if you need something en route to Graeagle or the Lakes Basin area, I would not hesitate to stop here. If you're headed to Quincy area or further though, there's a larger grocer and drug store there that will probably be more what you're after. read more

Just went into the store for a simple purchase. Two loaves of plain white bread. As a thank you for my business, I was charged $7.58. For two loaves of plain white bread. I understand that things are typically more expensive in small town in remote areas, but the pricing by the current owners goes way beyond that. I've always been a huge believer in shop local when it's available. As a local resident it saddens me that I have to drive out of town just to buy basic staples and not have my pocket picked. This will be my last visit ever to Leonard's Market. read more

Just changed hands and the new owners are getting more non name brand stuff and increasing prices. But then again it is the only place in town. We tend to pick up must have items and save our real shopping for Reno or Quincy. For example our brand of juice here is $5+ and only $3+ in Reno. read more

So this was our first time at this grocery story which was recommend! Okay why I gave 1 star.... here it comes 1) the young I mean boy cashier was not pleasant and rude as heck!! We had to buy groceries for my 2 year old where the cabin we were staying did not have a local grocery story so we chose to visit this spot the first time. 2) food options is not all that! Bel air or Safeway...wait nugget has way better selections, mind you the employees there are always pleasant and at least makes you feel welcomed! 3) when we were checking out the young boy...same one... was the cashier and when we were paying didn't say one word to us and the lady who was assisting him in bagging was more annoyed with us because we bought lots of groceries I mean hello!!! We have to eat.....meaning feed a child..anyways....honestly I might as well stick to bel air or Safeway who are worth investing than this place!! FYI.... you are better off grocery shopping in Truckee or Tahoe because you will receive better customer service trust me! read more

Its a good store with awesome employees. Great selection of food items. I was visiting and did notice they are about 20% more expensive than other stores. It's an IGA and I understand. There are a few in the valley. I think out there in the countryside with a low overhead, it would be about the same. Nikita was very nice and the man working produce helped me find items. The meat section is the strongest part of the store. It's a little light on veggies but it's understandable. Best part about the store is it's open early, late and 7 days. That's not easy to find in a small town. The place is lucky to have ANY store, nonetheless one open with more hours than 9-5. Just remember this isn't San Francisco or even Reno. If you want an alternative supplier, go east a few blocks to the Feather River Co-op market. And remember when you're there thinking about all the big city conveniences and variety you left behind, know it's an hour to drive to Reno and an hour back in good weather. read more

This market has it all! The meat ( has butchers on site) is great quality!!!! Very neat and they keep the store clean! Pices are on the higher side but not outrageous ( at 5500 elevation for a 2400 population it's quite a deal) All n all I've always found what I needed be it coconut milk to Japanese curry tatter tots to had made breakfast sausage! This is a small town and has few stores available. There is a Dollar General store that can't keep help. There has been the same problem with Leonard's. There are people who have been there for years, and the lower level employees do turn over fairly often. I was in there today and the checker named Savvanha was very nice and and was also effectively engaging with every person around. I know that there prices are very high compared to large chain stores, but for what you need at the time, it is well worth it to shop with them. And they are locals. read more

Back again to up-date my Leonard's Market review! So, I see how this works now with the new owners of 2-1/ 2 years. How horribly sad. They fired one gal because she made too much money $14.00 per hour, (wow, we can ALL GET RICH ON THAT!). The more mature women who have been working at Leonard's for many, many years, some you do not see any longer, the others, you only seem to see in the winter months. Come Spring, Leonard's hires what appears to be family, nieces, nephews, son's, friends, etc... They aren't friendly at all, don't smile, they are like little robots at the check stand! Winter time they have certain items that have one price, then Memorial weekend arrives, they Jack the the price up by $2.00 per item on some things!! YEP, you read read that correctly my fellow reader, $2.00 bucks an item!!!!! I was shocked! Greed, greed, they don't care who they rip off. Please, are you coming up from Sacto, over from Reno? There's Winco, Costco, Savemore, Dollar General, a plethora of stores you can purchase your groceries at, before you stop at Leonard's! Dollar General is just past Leonard's on the right!! read more

A couple good staff members that are very polite and do their job in a timely matter. However, there is one individual in this establishment that I have personally observed berate his own co workers and customers. In a seemingly random fit of unwarranted rage, I witnessed a employee named "Evan" scream at the top of his lungs at another employee. Most of it was gibberish, but his main point was she was "stealing." How she could be doing that while helping a customer, and while he hasn't even been standing around for more than 1 minute is beyond me. This, however, is not the first time I've seen him do something like this. He is completely unfriendly and gives off an awful vibe whenever you're around him. He doesn't even look at you while he's checking you out! I do not feel comfortable shopping in my own local grocery store because of a fear of being put in a hostile situation (or witnessing one) involving this employee! Absolutely inexcusable! But you report to the management, and nothing seems to be getting done. I suggest you drive the extra time to Reno, it's cheaper anyways. read more

I try to like and support this little store because I want to support local business and feel like both the selections and prices are reasonable.. the problem I have, is that staff of women working at this store are always cold, curt and horribly rude.. The young gentleman always give kind service with a smile, but the older women are not this way at all.. They may be kind to the sweet old ladies, but they seem very judgemental and are not nice to everyone.. Sadly, Leonard's has been sold to new owners who are quickly pricing themselves out of business! Popular food items are disappearing and being replaced by rows and rows of canned chili and Progresso soups, which obviously aren't selling. Milk is considerably less expensive at the variety store across the street. The "Manager's Specials" are only special because of their inflated prices. In this economically depressed town, Leonard's was the only grocery that accepted WIC (Women, Infants, Children) food vouchers. Now the nearest grocery that accepts the vouchers is in Quincy - a 64 mile round trip for many who have no means of getting there! The Leonard's clerks have apparently been instructed to tell complaining customers that the changes were brought about "by the government". Few locals are ignorant enough to believe that! I drove to Quincy yesterday and purchased competitively priced groceries at Safeway! Even with the price of gas, it's cheaper to shop in Quincy. Reaction to the change is made obvious by the nearly empty parking lot. The only positive aspect is that you won't have to stand in line to make a purchase! read more

It has taken me a long time to learn my lesson about the "new" Leonards, but it has finally sunk in. This place is no longer worth the hassle of driving to! Since the current owners took over they have systematically stopped carrying everything I used to purchase there regularly, and the few things they still carry have doubled in price, if by some miracle they have managed to keep the shelves stocked, which does not happen very often. I have paid double for my groceries there forever because of the convenience of having a market so close, but not any more. Between them not having any clue how to deal with the usual power outages to me digging out my car to go there tonight for food only to be met with a sign on the door that says " CLOSED DUE TO WEATHER!" after only about 8 inches of snow (did you just now realize we are in the Sierras?), I realize that I cannot rely on this store anymore and need to give in like most others in Portola and buy my groceries in Reno. I give up on this place. I will plan ahead and get everything elsewhere because shopping at Leonards these days means constantly going without. read more
