It can be a little too much of an adventure trying to find stuff in here, but otherwise this place rocks. They have stuff sorted by color and type (in the women's section anyway) but you really have to have something specific in mind when you're looking (unless you actually like shopping aimlessly, in which case you could spend hours here). I found a nice black jacket for my trip to Cleveland last December that I've been wearing pretty much ever since and a few choice 70s-ish looking items for a party (because we all know how likely orangey-pink is going to come back in style). I literally may never shop anywhere else. If they sold partially eaten jars of caviar and truffles cast aside by the citizens of Japantown and Pacific Heights, I would buy those too. Excellent clothing selection, including some designer labels finds. Everything is very reasonably priced and looks almost new (example: J.Crew corduroy pants, perfect condition, $7.99). They also have good kitchen supplies, books, and a small section of quality electronics. read more

As far as thrift stores go, this is as good as it gets-large selection and great prices. I bought a Pagatonia fleece jacket that is new or just looks new for $7 and an organic, long-sleeve t-shirt with tags for $6. As with all thrift shopping, it's buyer beware so I try to stick to clothing that looks relatively new. When thrift shopping I don't expect great customer service or any of the other comforts we pay for when we pay retail, that being said, this place had helpful staff and short lines at check out. This is probably the cleanest, most organized Goodwill I have come across. Everything is neatly organized by gender and size. Clothes are hung nicely on the racks. Tons of great deals, lots of brand name clothing (which surprised me), tons of vintage-esque clothing, and a wide variety of clothes in general. My girlfriend found a faux Louis Vuitton bag in great condition and for much cheaper than anywhere online. Who cares if it's faux when it looks great and costs only $10! If you're a bargain hunter or just looking for something different, definitely give this place a look. read more

I really like this store as I often find something really unique. I recently found a $40.00 leather belt, very much in style, for $2.49. What a steal plus I found a totally cool linen top. You have to go through some junk to get a gem on your buck but I trust with time you will have good luck. Sometimes it can be a wait to get in the dressing room but clothes are pretty well organized so that saves some time. Also there are other great stores on Fillmore and excellent places to eat. I have been coming to this Goodwill for a few years. It is a great stop before going home after work! This place is AMAZING! I am a big thrift store shopper so I know when I have found something good. I went absolutely crazy in the place. I found some killer deals. I ended up leaving with black sequin Laundry by Shelly Segal pumps, high waisted Habitual jeans, the coolest striped shirt ever, and a funky patchwork J. Crew dress. My past purchases include London Fog, Chanel (yes, CHANEL..I totally scored), Marc Jacobs, etc and tons of vintage and wanna be vintage kitchen wear. The only thing I don't like about this place is it's ever changing floor plan. I really don't like how all the kitchen wear and books are in the back now. It looks really messy. That part of the store needs a little work, but overall it is a good store. read more

BEST GOODWILL IVE EVER BEEN TO!!! I go here like once a week. The selection is absolutely unprecedented!!! Niiiiiceeeee stuff (i.e. Calvin Klein suit pieces for $10) and the prices are always your normal low cost goodwill prices. Clothing is always pretty clean, often still even has tags on it. Goodwill is my "go to" when I need clothes. If I can't find what I need there then it's off to Crossroads or Buffalo Exchange then H&M. It's also a really good place to get your books. It's a little hard to rate a Goodwill. Sure some are cleaner than others but at the end of the day I'm just glad they take my stuff off my hands every time I move. I move a lot. This is the most organized and most spacious Goodwill I've ever been in. I was in here for maybe 15 minutes buying a VCR (don't judge me) and was amazed at how it didn't look like an indoor flea market. I didn't get a good look at the offerings of anything but VCRs, but it still gets a high rating because it was just that damned organized! Oh, and also my VCR worked. read more

Not my favorite goodwill in the city, but it's my standard receptacle for all closet cleanout frenzies (passed on by Crossroads up the street). They have a nice homewares section, and I like how they've organized their store to separate some of the nicer, pricier items (in the back) and created a "vintage" section (although, let's be honest, isn't all of it vintage?) Definitely one of my go-to browsing stores on Fillmore, and a worthy place for donations. read more

Between the disappointment I felt in seeing the same things for inflated prices in the NYC Goodwill's I am returned to SF for the holidays to run rampant around the isles of clothes in the Goodwill on Fillmore in J-Town......by far my favorite Goodwill to date.....not to mention a much economically friendlier option to effing Crossroads and Buffalo Exchange in the Haight. In the Fillmore Goodwill I have found scores of good buys including labels (if you are into that) like Banana Republic, Jones New York, JCrew, Calvin Klein, and DKNY. Also you can find a good amount of vintage clothing, suits, and dresses. I don't really browse much of the shoes, as over the years I have learned to be picky about used shoes.......you never know when an unwanted case of foot fungi will come to get you. For those in SF: if you are tired of the pretentiousness and overinflated prices of "thrift" stores and "second hand" places like Crossroads or Buffalo Exchange in the Haight, try out this Goodwill and I promise you won't break your wallet. Always a friendly, helpful staff member in the drop off section. The store area is organized well and the home section usually has good things. A little pricier than other goodwills but they probably have a higher rent seeing as they are on the Fillmore. read more

Easy curbside donation area staffed by genuinely nice people.

I was turned away 2 days in a row because they claimed they were too full to take anything and asked me to come back in 2 hours. I showed the person working there that that the donations were of high quality and there were not taking up much space. I also asked him to accept them because I've had 2 days off of work to be able to make the trip there. He said "not my problem " He also said they're not obligated to be open during business hours and reserved the right to close anytime read more

In this paragraph I am rating all Goodwill stores. I chose this particular one because its in between my work and home and I have had the greatest success there recently. I love goodwill. I will (to the chagrin of anyone who ever accompanies me) search through every article of clothing and book and frame and always find a hand full...or big bag full of great stuff. If I had to pay full price for work clothes I would kill a hobo in a fit of rage. Lucky for all the hobos out there, Goodwill exists. read more

On the norm I don't shop at second hand stores. I made some donations of some old clothing and shoes and I was amazed that this particular place is not all cluttered with junk at all. It's a new place. They moved right across the way from the old building. This one is modern looking and well organized. I was shocked that they had security cameras all over. Can you imagine people shoplifting here. The items must be good then. Some things are not worth purchasing but I don't hear any complaints. read more

You need patience and a good eye to find worthwhile items here. This store appears to be well-managed, as it is kept on the cleaner/organized side of things, and I enjoy the new extension of "higher-end" items in the southern room, i.e. bridesmaid dresses and Franco Sarto sandals. Today I found a great brunch recipe book for a mere $2.49. It is new! It will be a great *white elephant* gift next week. I also enjoy the ease of donating in the adjacent garage on Post street. I have been to a fair amount of thrift stores in the City and I was recently wowed by this one. I think there is a new management or something. The other reviews are totally right about it being nice and CLEAN. This place is pretty huge so it's not all jammed and overflowing everywhere. They recently added a new section which anyone walking by might think its a fancy boutique-y type store. Definitely check that out. They have even hired a display staffer who is constantly updating an attractive set-up near the door. The vibe is much different from other Goodwills because of the extra lighting and also, they now have awesome music. Lastly, they have a nice dressing room area. Not one ad hoc shack in the corner. Three dressing rooms that have benches and mirrors. I love crossroads too but jee, 1/3 of the price for the same item and wider selection just down the street? Hmmm... read more

First time I was turned away from a Goodwill because they were full on donations. They said they would take clothes, so I gave them some nice jeans and some good shirts, but I was surprised they passed on the most valuable things in my donation box because they were not clothes. I was harassed and followed by an extremely rude security guard who accused me twice of trying to steal. Meanwhile, there's crackheads right in front of him stealing . When I hung up two items I was no longer interested in he asked me where the items were. My purse is so small I couldn't steal anything even if I wanted to. Every aisle I went to he leered at me. I couldn't even shop. He was also looking at me in a really creepy, lecherous way. I am so disgusted. I've been shopping at this goodwill for 10 years, and have spent a lot of money over the years. I am rating this location primarily on my experience with the excellent donation center staff. After debating heavily on whether or not to donate to Goodwill or bring my used goods to the local church donation center where I felt that my clothes would go directly to those in need rather than a resale store, I buckled down and just asked a staff member to explain it all to me like a 5 year old. The bottom line is: Despite our best intentions, charities have long surpassed being able to sell/use all the of our donated unwanted clothes. So what happens after clothes are donated to Goodwill? Do they get thrown away? To the contrary. He explained that: 1) Good condition, fashionable clothing is cherry picked and priced at the retail stores. Those in need of free clothes must first earn a voucher from Goodwill by participating in free self-improvement programs like a computer class. 2) If they don't sell in a timely manner, those clothes (along with clothes that didn't make the first cut) are reshuffled to an As-Is store (http://www.yelp.com/biz/goodwill-as-is-store-san-francisco) for a buck a piece. 3) When those don't sell, giant dumpster sized carts of mixed clothing are sold at auctions to vendors, community organizations or individuals looking to, for example, clothe entire networks of friends and family. 4) And when those don't sell, the remainder is compacted and either sent to textile recycling plants or sold overseas. Goodwill is committed to NOT throwing away useable items. Granted yes, there are organizations out there that can use specific pieces (i.e. prom dresses for the Princess Project and suits and interview clothes for organizations dedicated to helping individuals find jobs), but don't let that deter you from helping support an organization that stands by an admirable mission to help marginalized communities. So what did I learn after donating 2 bag fulls of clothes? The easiest way to be help your community and the environment is to begin investing in products that will last rather than inundate charities with items they can no longer use. Recycle, reduce, reuse folks. I can never find anything but maybe a couple of books when I go to the Goodwills in the city. Maybe I don't get there in time for the good deals or anything- but blah. This one seems like it doesn't have enough stuff for the space it has. Today I bought L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics because it was $1.50. I wonder if it was cheaper for a reason...But for one book I waited way too long in line. They had one register open and I had to wait behind two women who are trying to bargain further on prices and the cashier was just really slow. So I missed two buses. Jerk. read more

"i'm gonna pop some tags, only got 20 dollars in my pocket, i'm i'm i'm huntin', lookin' for a come-up, this is f*cking awesome...." for those who haven't heard macklemore & ryan lewis' "thrift shop," this song's lyrics perfectly capture the thrills of thrifting; digging through the bins, finding footie pajamas to fit a grown man, and the joy of paying just 99 cents for clothing. and it's my current favorite. the song brings me back to my days living in western addition, just down the street from this goodwill. the ladies of pacific heights would drop off the designer jeans they'd paid $300 for, and i'd gladly pick them up for $30. i found joe's, sevens, citizens, and hudson jeans on the regular. designer brands abound at this location, as opposed to other goodwills in the city (do not bother with the one on clement in the richmond or the one on geary in the 'loin). anyone in SF that likes secondhand shopping should check it out! in conclusion: "i wear your granddad's clothes, i look incredible, i'm in this big-ass coat, from that thrift shop down the road...." read more

Extremely well organized. Big store but not as big as the Goodwill on Mission/Van Ness. I scored a pair of new Camper heels (usually ~ $150) for $10.49. They also had two registers going on a Sunday which kept the check out line moving. read more

I shop here pretty often. Most of the staff members are great. They love my dog. I have seen many managers come and go. The current one seems to be a bit unfriendly. It's fairly organized there although I hate the constant changes that that they make. The shoe arrangement is horrible. They are all over the store, which means you may be able to find the match and you may not. You'll have to find the right employee to help you find it. Most of the time they seem to be under alot of stress and don't have time. Lisa is my favorite employee. She's the best. They have great furniture there and they seem to get alot of really nice televisions. I have purchased several. Overall it is a fun place to shop. read more

I've been a Fillmore Goodwill customer for decades now and I've never been disappointed! Said that they take e-waste. When I told them that I had an office copier, the lady told me that the S. Van Ness & Mission Goodwill will accept. Wrong! Refused my old copier. I am so glad I finally decided to pay this Goodwill a visit. Everything is considerably cheaper than the one at Clement, with much nicer items. Designer brands (J.Crew, Ann Taylor, Bebe, BCBG) are easily accessible, an there's a lot more to go through. I managed to find a French Connection top for $4.50 and Nine West Bag for $4. Not to mention, a pristine collection of shoes. Nice amount of variety in clothing, but not to the extent of being overwhelming. The only thing that needs improving is customer service. I find the staff at the Clement Goodwill much friendlier and more approachable while the lady who was ringing me up today seemed a bit too stuck up and impersonal for my taste. I will still be back to look for more goodies. read more

This Goodwill is, and always will be, one of my favorites to shop. I always find designer finds for great prices. Already broken in Joe Jeans for $10? Sure! A&F jeans for $6? Sign me up! It's a goodwill not a department store, so don't expect anything glamorous. But take the time to appreciate all the nice, sorted out merchandise (by size!) and it won't take long to get in and out. read more
