I lucked out. Walked into the store @ 5:10pm & didn't have to wait to sell. From what I can see the store was pretty stock yet nice stuff, but I was there to sell not to buy. Wish there was some kind of guide before bringing my box of stuff (4 star rating) however the person who helped me told me active wear isn't something they buy but it is what it is. They did buy a garment from me and with the percentage of 30% I still got $8 which is a good value to me. Overall this is still a good store to check out selling or buying but make sure it's on the vintage side (brand names are not encouraged to bring.) read more

I'm just a teenage wasteland! Get wasted! This is such a cool vintage store in the Haight Ashbury district of San Fran. This is where it seems all the desperate hippies go to sell their coolest threads so that some lucky shopper can score some cheap duds. I know San Francisco has some weird vintage shops, but this one is the coolest. Just check out the exterior of this store, it's like it was some sort of indie cinema house or something before it was lovingly transformed into a cool store. Yea, some of the prices are a bit more San Francisco high than wasteland low, but they have stuff that you'll never find anywhere else, unless you're shopping with Sid Vicious or Dee Snyder or something. The clerks were appropriately aloof, like you'd hope someone selling Balanciaga second hand would be. Parking is nearly impossible. In fact, it seems there was a family living in a van in front of this place. What a cool place to camp! read more

Large selection of vintage clothes. Reminder that it's a curated vintage store so it's going to be expensive. Cheapest thing I saw was a $20 shirt with many stains and holes. They have several designer items that are $500 plus. Be aware if you are any bigger than a large, they will not have your size. Largest waist size they carry is 30" or a M/L. Also nothing is sorted by size so it's hard to shop. It also reeks of cigarette smoke from outside, so if you're sensitive it may not be the place for you. read more

Hi Yelp. My friend and I walked into here today and before I could take my first breath the employee in the photograph is reaching for my shopping bag. No smile or explanation. I was stunned to see that at least 5 other people in the store had paper shopping bags like mine and were still holding them. Stunned, I said "Just us?" I bring all my out of town guests here. The inventory shows the good taste of the buyers. There's a rack of discounted designer clothes. I got a perfect condition lambskin designer bomber jacket for 1/2 price, and Prada shoes, $90, which to me is a great deal, considering the original prices. I've even sold back some of my impulse purchases. Yes, some of the items are pricey, but good luck finding them elsewhere, and Wasteland is huge, survived COVID, gives paychecks to many, and pay outs to sellers. There's plenty of mirrors, a dressing room, security guard (sadly, a plus), well, you get the idea. Their buying hours are now M-F 12-6. Destination worthy. read more

On a warm Saturday in May this place is full of very cool looking 20-something's and teenagers, so my retail anxiety went through the roof. But whoever my associate was who helped me was super kind and didn't make me feel judged for wearing my "errand-running" athleisure attire. A few of the pieces I brought in were quite old and needed some repairs or hardware maintenance, but she seemed to really see the potential in certain garments, and made the whole process super easy. I was able to get about $300 and it only took ~30mins which was way faster than I expected! I will definitely be back! read more

After early lunch I walk by Wasteland and memories of my days with Winona Ryder flash before me! I had to drop in! I am warmly greeted by the young man at the counter, Gen Y or Gen Z, definitely not Gen X, 'cause he had no eyepatch lol! Anyways, a shoutout to blondie for being a good spirit in there. As I browse the racks I thought I was on Rodeo Drive for a moment, prices did not remind me of the old Wasteland, when it was possible to get a vintage bargain find if you're lucky. Today, it's over the top thrift couture, but I admit very organized & clean! In the end, I have no regrets walking in. I fully support independent businesses and Wasteland brought back a myriad of memories of young Eric, in his combat boots, on '69 Café Racer with Winona riding shotgun. Wasteland SF has gone down in quality selections since 2020. I've been a customer and seller at Wasteland of various locations for many years. I used to be able to sell, get paid a decent amount and do some shopping. Recently, this Wasteland location hasn't had much to offer. Their vintage and designer section lacks. There's always a bunch of zara basics, which I don't mind, but tons of pieces with makeup stains in the women's section. They over charge for items that are clearly non-wearable or even dry rotted. I've seen fake vintage reprints that were way overpriced. The buyers almost never know what they're looking at. Most of them are new and don't thoroughly inspect clothing for details, let alone know the difference between vintage, retro, and reprints. This location seems so just focus on current trends and designer instead of true vintage and quality picks. read more

Wasteland is the absolute best second-hand shop. It's more high-end compared to Crossroads and Buffalo Exchange. Wasteland is more exclusive. You'll find streetwear brands like DREW, SUPREME, Balenciaga, Levis, etc. They definitely won't take H&M, Forever 21, or any of those brands on the cheaper end. So selling your clothes here might be difficult if your wardrobe consists of fast fashion and cheaper pieces. Wasteland is much more expensive than the other second-hand shops but still 50% cheaper than when you'd buy the same piece brand new. The service here is much better as well. read more

Oh, Wasteland! I stated coming here as a kiddo in the 90s. Back then it was mostly vintage and just had the best and most affordable stuff. It was such a great place for teens in search of style. Memories of perfect 50s dresses for $22 and the best vintage tees...I would head to the dressing rooms loaded up with stuff to try on. (Of course people whined about prices back then, but they were not people who knew vintage from actual thrift.) Cut to today, and Wasteland is basically just a store to sell designer labels to. Like much of SF itself, it's a gentrified version of a once-funky and unique vintage store. Once they started focusing on basic b*tch labels like Joie, Vince and Lululemon (in around 2014-16) it was truly the beggining of the end. The buyers really just look for recognizable brands. Even a pair of authentic 70s sailor jeans were rejected because the label was not recognized. Still worth a browse for a special piece and to sell designer clothes but it's no longer a place I care to shop at. read more

This was my first time in Haight Ashbury and I wasn't disappointed. I absolutely loved the interior of this store, everything was super organized and they had some nice designer items as well. I got a cute floral crop top for only $10 and also got 2 rings. I was a big fan of their jewelry collection, they had a varied selection of rings ranging from Y2K fashion to more modern styles. I am waiting to come here again and thrift more items! I was browsing in this store for only 10 mins and managed to get 3 items, so can't wait to come again and shop for longer! read more

Wasteland is almost iconic of Haight Street in SF. It has some of the best designer and vintage finds for people who really know fashion. Their reputation precedes them given how long they've been on the block, but due to this community engaging level of reputability the quality of customer service has dropped. The prices match inflation of the now gentrified and costly ways of San Francisco. Designer, yes- but some of the pricing is out of line with quality, and rarity of the pieces. If you are a seller, they buyers have very limited knowledge and take longer time to sell, based on their own bias and based on their need to check with supervisors and managers to adequately price. I have sold several pieces here, and even went to re-sell items that were originally purchased at Wasteland to further contribute to sustainability. I was told by one seller, "this style doesn't do well here" to which I said, "you're incorrect, I purchased this piece from this store, please let me speak to another buyer with more knowledge". There have been many times where I've stumbled upon great finds for good prices, but as a seller the buyers need more hardcore knowledge. They do not know fashion and seem to be out of touch with current trend. The inconsistencies of the the buying staff are hit or miss, but the location has endured and remains a staple of San Francisco, hope they can match the once greatness of the city to their methods of staffing. read more

I've been to Wasteland many times over the past 10 years. On my most recent visit, I found a pair of bone colored Chanel espadrilles. I've been thinking about purchasing these, and I've gone to Neiman's and tried them on about three weeks ago. So you can imagine my surprise when I walked into the store and saw those beauties behind the glass. I was even more shocked when I took them out of the case and realized they were in good condition, authentic (I'd been researching and trying these on for months) and my size. SOLD! The employees can be a little off-putting. I always laugh about this. It's like, why are you acting so high and mighty/rude? You're working at a resell/thrift/vintage store. There's absolutely NOTHING wrong with this job, but you'd think they'd come back to reality and realize they ain't all that! Because the employees can be a bit snooty, I never have even thought about selling my clothes here. I ain't got time for them to treat me terribly. Today I had to get the buyer to explain what you call an outfit with regular sneakers, pants t-shirt or sports/sweat suit type pieces. She very graciously said "street wear," while smoothing and examining the soft leather 80s disco-ish belt I brought in. I have no clue what is considered vintage in 2023. Who will ever want my faux leopard coat? This was a watershed moment in aging, for sure. read more

I really can't understand vintage thrift stores like this. A lot of items here cost an arm or a leg because of their name. You can still find some good items for a reasonable price but then I rather just get something full price elsewhere. I guess you can argue about stability and helping the environment, but are you really when everything is marked pretty high and there are lots of thrift stores just on this street? One of my favorite neighbor places to go to clear my head during the work day. If you are really into clothes you need to go often and just browse for nothing specific. If there's a treasure it will find you. Prices are reasonable despite what some review say- I check against TheRealReal and in the same ballpark. Because it's a high traffic store lots of people trying on and touching so I always add in cleaning to my end cost. I've found some really amazing finds over the years but I go in probably once a week. I've never consigned so I don't know the process but I'm glad they don't just take anything. There's enough consignment on Haight that will or the Good Will if you're looking for more worn vintage stuff that's not designer For the higher end bags and shoes in the cabinet- that's on the high side can find on TheRealReal and I've passed on a few items because I'm not sure they are authentic. While they do have some steals on various designer brands, BEWARE that some of their stuff may be counterfeit and not legit. Take for instance this "Undercover x Supreme " coach jacket they had for sale. It is a cheap Chinese replica which they're selling as a legit around $700-$800. I've owned this jacket and have been collecting supreme for 10 years and could spot it as a Chinese reproduction right away. Pattern/graphic and sizing was way off. And no these jackets aren't 1:1. These jackets only came in three pattern variants, none of which look like this one . read more

I've absolutely adored this Wasteland location for over a decade! It is actually one of my favorite places to visit when I'm in the city. I can always find a few rare designer pieces that I want to purchase. I trust the buyers here so much! They're knowledgeable about everything from high fashion and street wear and in-between. I know that I can bring them certain designers and they just get it. I see a lot of complaints about selling. But I've had so much success here and have found their prices to be comparable to what you can sell things online for. My rule for selling is, to be friendly and don't put too much pressure on the buyers. And don't bring them anything you wouldn't personally wear tomorrow. It's a sacrifice but you can always rebuild your wardrobe later. I appreciate so much the times their payout has helped me when I was in a pinch. Much respect. Thanks, Wasteland! read more

Overpriced outdated designer junk in terrible quality (thoughtful staff tho) So I'll give it to the wasteland - the curation is pretty neat, and I can tell the staff care about how they stock the store and what to put on display. But dear God the prices - I have no idea how they justify selling some of this stuff at literally ABOVE RETAIL- like In what world is a stretched out, heavily used long sleeve from 'Kapital' worth $300 when it was retailed new at $240? Why are they charging $78 for an M-65 polyester liner with a massive rip along the side when you can get one in nearly mint condition from the same manufacturer for below $30 literally across the street at indego thrift? $200 for a pair of gross yellowing and stained Acronym prestos? Are we fr? Exactly who is going to buy that when you can get them dead stock for like $30 or $40 bucks more. Like it's sort of shocking how massively overpriced everything is, especially when not so long ago, wasteland was MUCH more affordable with the same curation. Also one last nitpick-the music is so damn loud in the store that it's impossible to think, let alone talk to staff or anyone you came with. So while id usually recommend it as a nice little place to window shop, now unless you're looking for a headache, it's basically not worth going to at all. Please take into account however, there is no guarantee for authenticity of items since it's secondhand goods, and the pricing, which seem insane for any thrift shop, are based on their "designer" rates. In this case, if you see something you like, just make sure you're getting a good deal out of it by doing some searching online! The selection is great, with a lot of popular and niche brands, and I'd say I think the pricing is pretty reasonable. On the other hand, I do wish there was a little more arrangement in terms of pricing in the store, as $20 - $50 items are mixed up with $100+ to even $400 items. So the price range is pretty huge and randomized, and it's kind of sad to find a really great piece and it turns out to be one of the really expensive items. While the workers at the store definitely did their job, I felt pretty bad because they honestly all looked just about miserable - not super welcoming or at all friendly. Otherwise, they were decently efficient! If you're looking for something fun to do with friends who enjoy fashion, I'd definitely check it out! read more

Overpriced and outdated. They have designer things, lots of it from the earlier 2000s. But the styles just aren't that cool anymore. For example, cascading Helmut Lang tops would just make me think that someone hasn't updated their wardrobe in 10 years. The stuff is way overpriced and I think they try to go for luxury and edgy, but I'm not paying good money for overpriced items that aren't even steamed before going onto the floor. Disappointing.
