Came in today, 2/2, around 2:00 pm with my two other friends, so that I and my friend could return these boots that had not worked out. We were not aware they did not accept shoes back, which is totally fine, but before knowing that, my friend had went to the register first asking for the return and the employee said their manager could help with that. A younger woman, who was the manager had came and helped her with the process, giving back $30 in store credit, so we still had no idea they had this "no shoe-return policy." I went next with a different cashier asking for a return as well and once they had saw I was returning boots, they had told me they do not take back shoes. I was confused and stated that my friend just gave theirs back a second ago and they still said no. The manager from earlier had came back overhearing the conversation, and realized she made a mistake. She was behind the 2 girls telling me the policy and tried to mouth she did not know and made a slashing motion to maybe have me deny my friend had gotten the store credit back from HER mistake. I wasn't sure what she wanted me to say, so I stated again, my friend just gave her shoes back. The manager then went on to RAISE her voice at me from behind the ladies, saying "Why would you do that" very rudely, and that I saw her saying she did not know. She said we were both somehow in hot water and placed a blame on me. I do not know if her goal was to embarrass me and my friends or have me be in the wrong, but that definitely caught me off guard. Mind you, I did not point to her or single her out saying she was the one who helped my friend, I was genuinely just confused. If this is how they train their management to respond to mistakes or events they should have been fully accountable for regarding a mistake THEY made, I will not be returning. Employees--especially managers--should have a clear understanding of company policies and communicate clearly and professionally. Speaking to young women in a public and such disrespectful manner is unacceptable and ruined our entire experience. read more

If you're looking for plus sized men's clothing, this place is the absolute pits for that. A store this size with as many aisles as they have and only a grand total of TWO racks have men's clothing, only one of which have shirts - and even those have mostly smaller sizes. Are you fat? Sucks to be you in general but doubly so if you want to shop here. Yeah, it's Goodwill. Clothing options weren't always going to be fantastic. But I've been to numerous Goodwill stores in the Bay Area alone that I could find clothes my size at and this isn't one of them. So as far as I'm concerned, this Goodwill is easily the worst of them all. But if you're looking for women's clothing, this place will be paradise for you. No shortage of that here. read more

It is very sad to see what has happened to the Goodwill stores in SF with their new layouts in stores - I have not purchased anything since the change as it seems they are more concerned on stacking items and not actually selling anything with how tight the aisles are - two people can't cross or share a walkway - the display shelving are too tall and too deep and too close to each other where you are not able to look and the top and bottom shelves are not accessible because aisles are too tight to stop and look if someone else is there recently the last row was against the back wall was made even more tight that you almost have to walk sideways. The corners with no display shelving and items get stacked looks horrible. The clothing has all shifted direction where you are looking through from back to front for most people. I have asked employees what they think and they seem unsure if they can comment....and suggested writing here. I don't know what management was thinking and this is supposedly how it works in Arizona stores but this makes no sense and the stores look very junk filled. Very sad to see what was an enjoyable experience and search for something interesting to no longer visiting. I hope they can reverse this or modify the stores as this is no longer an enjoyable experience at all locations. read more

This thrift shop isn't a bad place to go if you want cheaper items. There's a lot of clothes, and I mostly came for furniture. I was able to walk away with a weighing scale, but couldn't really find a lot of nice desk drawers or other options for lamps though there were a handful. Most of the focus is on women's activewear, long sleeve and short sleeve clothing. They have a 7-day warranty for electronics, so I bought a weighing scale, but I don't know if it actually works, and I'm going to test it out when I come home. Their furniture section is pretty limited, so if you're trying to come here, you would essentially have to spend some time. If you very intentionally come here hoping to bring back a nightstand or drawer, that's not guaranteed. However, there are a lot of other items like bed sheets that are used or even belts and hats to choose from. It's definitely not for everyone, but the prices are on the cheaper side. There's also a lot of organizers and random knick-knacks that might be interesting to look at if you've tried all the other locations like Facebook MarketPlace, Craigslist, or even NextDoor. The employees are pretty friendly there, and service is really quick. It's just a matter of you have to spend the time to go look at many items, and you might be overwhelmed by the selection because it's not exactly really neatly divided. But overall, it's clean, it's normal, and items are used. read more

Extremely unsafe. I have been telling the employees for years that it is against the law and unsafe for them to keep the Exit doors closed/locked/covered. If there is an emergency, there would be a stampede out of the front door because the signs where there are doors that signify that they are emergency exits are not accessible. They are rolling doors and they are always closed. This had been brought to the attention to employees as well as managers. I am always reminded about the reason being shoplifters going out of the doors, well that compared to the safety of everyone else is no comparison. They obviously don't agree because they continue to do it everyday. read more

I love Goodwill and typically make yearly donations. This store is well organized, clean and the staff is friendly, welcoming and patient. If you have time, take a look at their items on sale, they are good quality and slightly used if at all, you can sometimes find useful things and they're cheaper than what you'll find in thrift stores! read more

I am so happy that I no longer have to hop on Muni and walk blocks to donate. They are open every day for donations but sometimes close early, not the store but the donation area. The store itself has been reorganized. It seems to work better. read more

While walking around the city, I happened upon this GW and was pleasantly surprised by how well displayed and uncluttered the products were. Usually most GWs have their products crammed together making it difficult to look at the individual item. Typical of most GWs, clothes were sorted according to color and article type, but not too squished together which made it nice. read more

Be aware of nerdy kid with glasses at the cashier. He will have you charge your card, tell you it doesn't work, have you do it again. And then, even though your bank account says it's pending, he tells me the transaction will not go through. Mind you I had two $16 transactions pending, he tells me they won't go through, this morning. I wake up to find they both went through. I call and the extremely unfriendly lady who had absolutely no idea what to do hung up on me. Don't go to that Goodwill, do not support them, they steal your money and try to be sly about it. If a nerdy kid with glasses tells you your transactions pending, and it won't go through you better believe it's going through and he's pocketing that money. Shady stuff going on there. read more

VERY rude customer service and they do not have their stuff together. We asked three times for the price of a damaged item and they still overpriced it. Originally said 15, then when to the back and told us 30 dollars for something damaged!! A purple shirt because they consider it vintage that's missing a drawl string. The lady who was rude had y black and pink hair I believe and glasses. Shorter and old white lady who very rude and lied to our faces about her manager and employees. Her other coworkers told us 15 but she tried to overprice us and accused us of losing the price tag when we were just asking for the price. claimed she just put the tag on but couldn't remember the price herself and had the manager overprice us as well. I'm from Oahu and have been utterly disappointed by the quality of the thrift shops we have, especially our Goodwill. So, I was not expecting too much from this one while I was visiting this week. I was pleasantly surprised to find many good quality and fun finds at this location. I found some really amazing deals and spent about $60 on 7 pieces. Not too shabby. Here we go: As of this week, this " non profit " takes your free things, runs all of it through a woman who works in the distribution area by the donation drop off, Anya is her name, who then decides what's valuable and almost everything you donate goes online. Your local donations are supposed to stay in your community, but they don't. Go to Goodwill Finds and you'll see art and jewelry for $$$$$$$. Why is this important? For one, the upper management blames the workers on the stores lack of business.... Apparently it hasn't occurred to them that it's their online presence and has nothing to do with their incredible hard working employees. And for those of us who buy and sell in order to live, eat and pay our rent... party is over. The crap they put on the sales floor is literally crap. But the store is slow with business and they can't figure it out. Geniuses. I'm talking about the San Rafael location! read more

Jeannette, the manager, is AWFUL!! My boyfriend was looking through a rack of tightly packed jeans. It was incredibly hard to look through, unless you took them off the clips (which he did for multiple pairs). One of the workers commented, "You made a mess!" and he replied, "I couldn't look through the pants properly, and I had to take them off the hanger to see them all." Just to note, on that specific rack, it was hard to put them back how they were originally. He didn't intend to make a mess at all. He had no choice but to leave them like that because of the way they were displayed. (He didn't mess up ANY other racks, just the one that was tightly packed together). The worker told her manager, and the manager was horrible to him, kicking him out. She could've kindly asked my boyfriend to put back the jeans on the clip he was looking at and showed him how to, or just be understanding of how the rack was displayed. She is super rude and totally power-tripped us because she is the manager. I tried to intervene and was questioning why we were getting kicked out for looking through the clothes, and then she told me I have to leave. I asked kindly multiple times if I could just purchase my items and leave, and she SNATCHED them out of my hand and yelled at me to leave. She could've gone about this in a better way, but she was so rude. My boyfriend didn't steal anything or hurt anyone; he was trying to simply look at the pants. I understand her frustration -- It's not fun to reorganize a rack!! But, my boyfriend didn't mean to make it that way. The way the manager handled it was rude and terrible. She was so mean and grouchy and didn't even let me buy my stuff. She looked like she was having a bad day and took it out on us. She was incredibly unprofessional, and I will be reporting her to the corporate office! read more

I had a terrible experience at this Goodwill. I found a shirt that was clearly missing pieces from the clothing item, but they still had it ridiculously overpriced. When I asked the white short woman with glasses and black hair working there if they could offer a discount, she was incredibly rude and dismissive. It's a thrift store--damaged and used clothes shouldn't be priced that high! I left without buying anything and won't be coming back. Very disappointing. read more

There are some genuinely nice items here. Lots of vintage stuff, cashmere, silk etc. The store is also well organized and clean. I would definitely come back. The main issue is the prices are insanely high for a thrift store. I live in Marin and none of our thrift stores are priced like this one. Maybe it's just an SF thing. It's also a rough place to go if you have sensory issues. The lights are bright, the music is at high volume, and the customers are LOUD. Way overpriced!. Fillmore location is way better, so is San Rafael. Neither my sister nor I, both long term thrifters, found anything to buy that was worth the price, a first for us! The store was absolutely packed with shoppers,, on a Sunday, and inventory seemed limited. Really disappointed. Salvation Army's prices are much more fair, in my opinion, and they have sales at least every week, so you can really get great bargains! read more

I had an extremely distressing experience at this Goodwill location at around 6 PM yesterday. While shopping with my 11-month-old baby in his stroller, I picked up a skirt and took it off the hanger to see if it would fit me. My baby was holding the hanger, but not chewing it or posing any immediate danger. An elderly Asian woman employee with glasses, a face mask, and a bob cut approached and told me, "Oh, he has a hanger, that is dangerous." I acknowledged her concern and said, "Okay, thank you," intending to take the hanger away shortly. However, to my shock, the employee, wearing visibly dirty gloves, reached into my stroller to take the hanger away from my baby, with her hands dangerously close to his face. I quickly said, "Thank you, it's fine," but she yelled back, "I told you, it's dangerous," and walked away. I was appalled that an employee felt it was acceptable to reach into my stroller and touch my baby without my consent, especially with filthy gloves. This is completely unacceptable and shows a lack of basic training and respect for customer boundaries. I spoke with the assistant manager, who was understanding and promised to address the issue. However, this experience left me deeply upset and concerned about the safety and professionalism at this Goodwill location. I hope management takes serious steps to prevent such inappropriate behavior in the future. Parents, be cautious if you shop here with your little ones. It's just unfortunate because this location is really clean and the rest of the staff is nice... read more

I don't know what's going on at Goodwill these days, the stores I visit all are all upside down, they've taken out a lot of merchandise, and they have cut a lot of stuff on display. They used to have a lot to choose from, but now, there's not too much to buy. The clothes are also all laid out in the opposite direction (looking backwards). I've been in the fashion world for over 30 years and I've noticed that they've laid out clothes in the opposite direction. I talked to one of the managers at the Daly City store and the Fillmore store in San Francisco and they told me that owners sold the Goodwills and that the "new order" came from the company's new directives to put the clothes in that way. At first glance, it's clear that the people who gave that order have no idea how a man's closet works; A man's closet has been conceived in a standard order for many years and has a logical reason for being the way it has been; I let a manager at Fillmore location to know this, and she turned upset with me for making this observation. At Goodwill in Daly City, I told them the same thing and they told me that this mandate came from management and that they, as employees, know clothes are wrongly hung, but they could not change that because they risked of being fired. If the managers see how a man's Closet (Wardrobe) clothes are hung in Macy's, Kohls, Ross, and many other stores just to cite few ones, they will agree with me and other buyers I have been talked with. I imagine that now, with this "new trend" of hanging clothes backwards, stores will be selling less, because people have to look up clothes in the opposite direction and therefore, this is not something pleasant (It's like wear your shoes facing opposite directions). This is one of those trivial changes that when somebody wants to impose as a new order, things fail. I hope top management take notes about this, and put the clothes back in the correct order for the benefit of all ASAP. read more

I have no idea how I've not reviewed this Goodwill. I've been coming here since back in the day when Nick Graham (you know - Joe Boxer) partnered with them for a split second and put in a shop-within-a shop called William Good. Nick's design team would go in and choose items to repurpose and then bring them back in to sell in the shop. I still have two or three William Good items and I love them, but alas, it only lasted about 6 months because the price points were too high. Fast forward 5 years and I've spent countless hours here and have found a jillion things. Great hiking shoes, and every other conceivable kind of shoe, basic clothing items, etc. I'm not sure I love the new layout - all clothes/shoes/accessories in the big room and home items in the little room, but then again they've never figured out quite what to do with the little room so it seems to be ever-changing. Last week I found this item (see photo) that I literally have no idea what it is.....but it has now become my daughter's earring holder, and it's brilliant if I do say so myself. Also got a mini-chop food processor for 4.98 because mine is on it's last legs and this one is hecka new. Any time I'm on Fillmore, you will definitely find me here. read more

2018 is coming and that means, time to clean out the closet! Goodwill takes everything except the skeletons in your closet, so you can leave that at home :p Donate, recycle and reuse. These are the words that are good to live by at the end of the year. I'm big on New Year's resolutions and one I'm including this year is to get rid of clutter. Do I really need three 3 qt. saucepans? how about 4 sweaters of the same color? 10 black coats? 40 pairs of shoes that are just stacked up in our coat closet? (the husband would disagree, but I don't need that many shoes!) I like that this Goodwill is organized. That is a lot to say for a Goodwill store where you usually have to dig through mountains of clothes. My super neat and Type A personality really appreciates this. Their selection is surprisingly good too! you can even find bargain hunts that are incredible. Given the location, you shouldn't be shocked to find gently used designer stuff at more than half the prices. I'm not one for designer labels, but if I was a polyvore whore, I'd come here. The lady who processed our donations was fast and courteous. I feel relieved of my "treasures" and know that they'll serve a purpose for someone else. Walking into the New Year feeling lighter, brighter and having more space in my apartment for many more impulse buys to come! ;-) read more

Mama raised me on good rock & roll & a lil' bit of country music, and of course she taught me the beauty of vintage Staffordshire vs. Limoges, where the "mark" is on #1 Barbie's buttocks, & things bisque, etc. As a kid I delved into the world of antiques & collectibles which led me to finding joy in that hidden pot of gold. In my thrifting journeys I have yet to find pirate booty, however I have come across many finds that have turned incredible profits, yet today it's getting harder and harder to find. Between the re-sellers & online sites like eBay, Etsy, etc. That's a lot of competition! The grannie battles... Today, I rarely get excited walking into thrift stores like Goodwill, Savers, Sally's, etc. anymore because simply it's usually picked over well before the doors even open... I mean have you seen the Goodwill Boutique, and other online thrift dot com sites?! It's insane what has become of this once exclusive knowledgeable club of collectors. Then you have the pushy re-sellers ready to barge in when the doors first open. I choose not to battle grannies & basement dwellers... sorry. The nasty thrift dust... So recently I was in Japantown San Francisco, walking on Fillmore Street, and hey hey there's Goodwill! Meh. I've been here maybe a hundred times in the past and have found some bargains, but for the most part walked out empty handed, well maybe with a layer of thrift dust. It's just so picked over nowadays. Yet, somehow I was drawn into the store... mean I didn't exactly need hot pink stilettos in size 14, or did I? And before you know it I was digging into the junk and odds & ends. Then something caught my eye... a small stack of record albums aka LP's which was popular for a century before 8-track tapes, then cassette tapes, then CD's, and now it's online for everything. Meh. Hey, it's Elvis... The vinyl album revival is strong nowadays, and not only for the music, but for the artistic covers too. Like a living technicolor in your hands! Tho I admit usually these thrift stack of albums are junk or simply beaten-up. As I sort out the Barry Manilow from the Osmond Christmas albums... Elvis Presley is suddenly staring at me! Then a second, and a third Elvis, and before you know it a collection of eight Elvis Presley albums! The best part is they were all near mint (like new) and as I check each record it appears rarely played if at all! Condition is everything in value and looks like I hit a home-run! Then before you know it two re-sellers are on each side of me. Ugh. *elbows out* I move on to pay for my finds. Then the cashier tells me it's on sale... from $1 each, so when all was said and done I paid about .50 cents per album, and yes, I snagged a couple Olivia Newton John ones for my own personal collection;P So let's do the math really quick... I paid $4+ tax for all of Elvis! Score! No money, no honey... A couple weeks later I list the Elvis Presley albums for sale online. Remember I invested $4 & pennies for it. After a quick research I figured I'd be okay making $40 on it. Then a bid, and another bid, and then a week later the lot sells for nearly $200! I mean what's the profit margin on that? Maybe not Forbes worthy, but I'll bank it! Dinner anyone? In conclusion, I'll still stop by this Goodwill because it's so clean, organized, and well, so hella picked-over. *sighs* Then again in all thrift stores today it's rare to find any treasures. Yet, when I do... that adrenaline whams me! Sometimes you never know until you "get your hands dirty", but of course knowledge is key too, not only luck. And you know I've come to a point in my life of maturity (oh oh) level when I'm probably just as happy finding Elvis a thank-you-very-much home... that's maybe the best reward! Who am I kidding? Very races place . My mix African American, Latina daughter was in there with a adult her grandmother on Friedan and two woman who worked there followed my daughter out though the store. She notice it when a woman walked up to her and ask how many items she has in her hand . I will be calling to speak to a manage . I just took clothes to donate here in the rain and realized I had accidentally dropped in a sweater I had purchased just minutes earlier from Crossroads Trading. When I turned around to ask if I could grab it out of one of the three bags I was donating (mostly new and unworn clothing because of the nature of my job in retail) and was spoken to so incredibly rudely by the woman managing the donation center I was completely shocked. I left without even being able to try to find the sweater I had just purchased (literally we are talking 2-3 minute window here) and later actually cried about the entire situation. To think that people donating hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in merchandise would be spoken to so disrespectfully is beyond disappointing. I'll be traveling further to donate elsewhere from now on. I've never been treated so poorly by a donation center. I can't imagine even going near this place again. I have the woman's name that point blank ruined my entire day with her shockingly rude attitude, but I'm not trying to get anyone fired.
