    So organized
    Ariel W.

Goodwill was founded in 1902 by Boston Minister, Reverend Edgar J. Helms. He took donations from wealthy Bostonians and hired people who were poor and who could fix the items. The items were then given to the people who worked on them or were resold. Goodwill's philosophy is "a hand up, not a hand out". Today Goodwill has become a $5 billion nonprofit organization that provides job training, employment, and community programs for people who have disabilities that might prevent them from getting a job on their own. They are also keeping millions of pounds of items out of landfills every year. I have noticed that Goodwill has started to carry new items and is looking less like a thrift store and more like a discount chain. It has been quite some time since I purchased something at Goodwill. If something is really outstanding they pull it and sell it online. I find I prefer the Goodwill outlet stores where you can still find interesting things but you may have to do endure a shoving match to get to them. Still the thrill of the hunt of is always burning and I generally will stop if I pass a Goodwill, as was the case with this visit. As soon as I stepped in the door I was wowed. This was the nicest smelling Goodwill I have ever been in. It was spotless and very organized. It was also was very large and had a ton of clothes. If you are into clothes, you would be very happy here. They didn't have any of the vintage things I gravitate to so I didn't linger. Kudos to them though for keeping the store top notch.

The woman in the blue shirt should not be assisting the public

This location has the most terrible service. The employees refuse to speak English and will only help you if you speak in Spanish. They will walk by you several times before obliging your request for assistance. Several times I've come in and watched the same cashier (blue shirt) be extremely rude to older customers, pretending she does not speak English and just in general refusing to be of any assistance. This past weekend was the worst, she ignored an older gentleman simply asking her for a price on shorts with no tags. He became upset and she got just as loud with him turning the situation into a full blown argument. The manager (the woman in the black shirt) is always on the floor witnessing this behavior and does not intervene.

    It's a SUPERSTORE!

We scheduled a pickup of a natural wood bedroom set bought from a north carolina furniture store,…read morein good condition. However, at the time of pickup they started questioning a 2 inch water stain on top one of the nightstands and stated the furniture was used. At that point we realized how rediculous they were in not accepting a good and expensive piece of furniture being donated. WOW, we often donate furniture and goods from our house and office, but will not use this organization anymore. This is like a starving individual rejecting a plate of food, cause it was cold or the plate was old. God Bless Them somehow.

First named City Mission they helped the community through the 1926 Hurricane, the 1929 stock market crash, and the years of the Great Depression. In 1935 the name was changed to Miami Rescue Mission and they continued to offer help to the community during the years of WWII. In 1969 they opened their building at 2250 NW 1Ave. In 1980 it became the Center for Women and Children. In 1992 the Broward outreach center opened. Today they offer 1,300 men, women, and children daily food, shelter, employment, and educational programs. Last year Miami Rescue Mission sever 850,000 meals, 260,000 nights of safe shelter, and helped 4,500 men and women find jobs. In order to fund their programs, The Miami Rescue operates their thrift store, The Bargain Barn. Items donated to the Bargain Barn are given to clients or sold to raise money. In addition to providing low cost items to the community, The Bargain Barn provides job training at their thrift store. Items you can purchase at the thrift shop include furniture, tools, clothing, accessories, and household goods. I was pleased to see the vast selection of inventory. One thing they could do better is to clearly mark everything with a price. On the things I asked about, the prices were extremely fair. Best of all, your money is going to help the most vulnerable in our community. Please consider supporting this worthy organization with your donations of clean and gently used items.
