But we were driving through town and my husband said he wanted fried chicken and I said we're finally gonna go eat lunch at yayas. So yeah he got the fried chicken meal with yams, cornbread, Mac salad, and string beans. I got the fried catfish with the same sides. Everyone working was so kind and came to check on us. The food was sooo good. I had enough leftovers to bring home dinner too.

The mac and cheese was legit. The candied yams were also a treat. The cornbread muffin comes out warm and moist, not cold and dry! The Mac salad was okay. This place is a must visit! The atmosphere is homey and inviting! The service was not only friendly, they treated us like friends. My only critiques would be the beverages, I wish they had non-fountain drink options with less sugar. Maybe even some house made lemonade or ice tea instead of from the fountain. They did have bottled water in the cooler but I really wanted some nice ice tea with my soul food. The mac salad has sweet bread and butter pickles and mustard in it, not my thing. Go and try!

Service: 1 Just…read morebought some property in Albany, NY with my man, all the way from Los Angeles, CA!! It was a cloudy day, we wanted some decent Caribbean food & found Umana. Black businesses in LA respect their people and take their businesses very seriously, so I assumed this place would do the same. Unfortunately, we were treated like pests over a small misunderstanding. The waitress-Mercy, misheard me on our drink preferences & began giving us the good ol " Caribbean" cold shoulder . Why so sensitive? The sorrel sangria had way too much cinnamon. Also, I wanted pikliz with my meal, but she did not return after the drink mishap. We quickly learned, this is not a BLACK BUSINESS, this is an AFRICAN BUSINESS & they will quickly show you the difference. Food & Drink: 3 Goat roti gave a a little stomach ache, but it was decent. Oxtain was not tender, not good. The plate was mostly bones & gravy & rice. Plantains & jollof were good. The drinks were delicious though, but they were not strong at all. Price: 2 Spent 100$ so basically 25$ for each item, including the drinks. Overpriced and very small portions. The sides are literal pints, like the babyfood jar size. I was like ??? We usually pay this much at high scale Haitian restaurants in Manhattan, and completely understand the price because we are experiencing amazing customer service, food, ambience &scenery. Better to order takeout, but i heard it very difficult to do that here. Idk lol weird. Black/Indigenous Americans, do not bring your money here. You are not completely welcome here.

Umana Yana - Washington Ave, Albany, NY If you're looking to…read morestep outside of the ordinary and experience bold flavors in a welcoming atmosphere, Umana Yana is a must-visit. This was my second time here--my first visit was dining in with friends, and this time I ordered takeout. Both experiences were consistently impressive. Known for its Ethiopian dishes and outstanding vegan cuisine, Umana Yana brings African culture to life through its vibrant décor, flavorful food, and thoughtfully crafted drinks. Every detail reflects passion and authenticity. It's no surprise that actress Tabitha Brown made a stop in Albany to experience the restaurant's highly praised vegan offerings. That's a testament to the reputation they've built. For my meal, I ordered the jerk lamb lollipops, jollof rice, and slaw. The lamb was tender, juicy, and packed with just the right amount of jerk seasoning. The jollof rice was rich, well-seasoned, and full of flavor, while the slaw added a fresh, crisp balance to the meal. On my previous visit, I tried the wings and waffles, and they were equally delicious. Two visits, two different meals, and not a single disappointment. Whether you're a longtime fan of African cuisine or looking to try something new, Umana Yana offers an experience that's just as memorable as the food itself. If you don't know, now you know. Add Umana Yana to your list--you won't regret it!

The atmosphere was…read morenice and it seemed like a good spot to grab seafood, but the service was noticeably slow throughout our visit. It took a while to get drinks and place our order, and we found ourselves waiting more than expected between courses. That said, the food itself had some highlights. The crab was absolutely amazing--fresh, flavorful, and definitely the standout of the meal. We also really enjoyed the shrimp cocktail, which was well-prepared and hit the mark. Unfortunately, the mussels didn't live up to the same standard; they lacked flavor and just weren't our favorite. Overall, it's an okay spot with some strong dishes, but the slow service and inconsistency in the food would make me hesitate before returning.

It had shrimp, crab legs, beef sausage, potatoes, and a half ear of corn on the cob. It came drenched in sauce, which was messy, but the taste was well worth it. The servers were very friendly, and the food came out in decent amount of time. Not super-fast, but not slow either. The place was also nice and clean. I would definitely go again, if I'm ever in the Abany area again.

CARIBE Restaurant - Schenectady, NY…read more I've had the chance to visit CARIBE twice now, and both times were for birthday celebrations. This is a cute Caribbean/Dominican restaurant with a casual order-at-the-counter setup and dine in- gives off a welcoming island vibe. The restaurant was clean, colorful, and full of Dominican flair. Both visits started with the Dominican Appetizer Platter, which in my opinion is perfect for sharing between 2-3 people depending on how hungry everyone is. It comes loaded with sweet plantains, crispy fried plantains, chicharrón, fried chicken tenders, fried cheese, salami, tostones, and French fries. If you're a fry lover, don't skip these! On my first visit, we ordered the pork chops and the pernil. The pernil was delicious--juicy, flavorful, and with the crispy top!! that my friend absolutely loved. The second time around, we both went with steak. I ordered the Bistec Salteado (sautéed steak) medium, while my friend ordered the grilled steak. Unfortunately, my steak came out well done. When I mentioned it, I was told that's how it's traditionally prepared Dominican-style. Needless to say, I wasn't happy and ended up not eating much of it. I did try my friend's grilled steak, and it was much better (for my taste). The birthday girl ordered the seafood rice and really enjoyed it. It was packed with seafood--definitely a dish for seafood lovers! For her birthday she got a choice of dessert and got the Flan- and a island girly her self she critiqued and loved!! Next time I'm in the area, I think I'll skip the entrées and order à la carte so I can sample more of the sides and appetizers. Overall, the food was good, the portions were generous, and the atmosphere was welcoming. The steak was a miss for me, but everything else was enjoyable enough that I'd return to try more of the menu.
