SUGA FOOTS SOUL KITCHEN - Oxtail w/ Rice & Beans

Suga Foot is, without exaggeration, the best soul food in the Albany-Troy-Schenectady area. For me,…read morethe true test of any soul food restaurant is the collard greens. These were exceptional. Tender, perfectly cooked, and bursting with flavor. The southern oxtail with rice and beans was equally impressive. The oxtail was fall-off-the-bone tender, rich, and comforting. The yams were sweet and balanced. Beyond the food, the restaurant itself is lovely. The decor is warm, full of plants. The only small suggestion I'd offer is serving drinks in glasses instead of plastic cups - real glassware would match the rest of the vibe a little better.

I loved the food here. I mean in the restaurant they are super nice and the food is amazing soul…read morefood. However I contracted with them for catering on May 16, 2026. I started this process in late January/early February because I knew around graduation time that things would be very busy. Although the business administration process is not traditional, I was OK to work with them because I know the food quality is good and I believed they would deliver. However , on my catering day where 20 people were waiting to eat for a 3 hour event, the food was delivered late. Not only was it delivered late, but I received a call around 35 minutes after the scheduled delivery time was told they were 10 minutes away, and that one of the entrées was left behind. I could not believe it after all this time spent planning, they still could not execute 100%. It is important to note that two days prior to me event my husband and I went to the location and spoke with the owner and his wife to make sure everything was good. Not only did they confirm everything but I paid the remaining balance when asked to do so. I also added half the tip. I did this because it thought any business getting paid up front would make sure execution would be perfect. Well, silly me for thinking the best. When I called to speak to the owner about the late delivery and missing food the conversation quickly became heated. He could not believe a woman would challenge him. Yes this woman did. I don't understand how this happened and why aren't you showing any remorse, sir? He said it it is graduation time and mine wasn't the only catering event on the schedule. Boy, I don't know who taught him how to deliver customer service but that is unacceptable. This is your business and execution in your problem not mine. Now his wife had delivered the food and I knew she was only doing what she had been told to do. So it wasn't her fault but I wanted to let the owner know how disappointed I was. I still can not understand how this "mistake" was made. I contacted them months in advance. I had multiple conversations with the team and two days before made it a point to go in person to confirm. And I paid in full. The owner said he apologized and what else did I want him to do. Wow! Also he assumed that I wanted compensation. He quickly told me he wasn't giving me my money back which I thought was very rich. I don't expect my money back but there was no effort to expedite the remedy of the mistake. 90 minutes late by the time the food was fully set up. I know that businesses like this don't like to return money so I wasn't expecting that. But I believe customer service requires a certain bedside manner and he did not have it. He came to our event and tried to stark an altercation with my husband saying you need to put a muzzle on your wife. Man please. You never have to worry about me again. And I hope others will think twice about having catering handled by this business. They are not worth the hassle.

The space is large and spacious. We went for brunch and it appeared to be family friendly. It's a nice place to go after church or to catch up yet you can still have an afternoon cocktail. I ordered the biscuit and gravy and my friend had shrimp and grits. In addtion we had beignets and candied bacon for the table. The beignets are not New Orleans good but would never expect anything this good in Albany. My biscuit and gravy were good. The gravy was savory and the biscuit tasted homemade. It was a little to thick for the amount of gravy. However I would love to try the biscuit by itself with another entrée. The shrimp and grits are not Southern style they are New Orleans style. My friend felt they were ok. Now the candied bacon was a hard NO. It was heavily salted. You could not eat do to the level of salt. I am not sure if this was a fluck or how it's prepared. Unfortunately we returned to the kitchen and I never return anything even if I don't like it. However, our server Alexa was very helpful and provided overall good service. If you are close by you should check out. True rating 3.5

Someone had recommended that we try the grandma sampler so my girlfriend and I both got those. The Cracker Barrel "Grandma's Sampler" is a popular, all-day breakfast dish featuring two buttermilk pancakes, two eggs, a sampling of bacon, smoked sausage, and sugar-cured or country ham. We both opted for the country ham, I got over easy eggs and she got scrambled. It is typically served with a choice of fried apples or hashbrown casserole. The hash brown casserole was a tasty potato dish. I got blueberry pancakes instead of regular and my girlfriend added a biscuit. The blueberries were really delicious. Great pancakes. They use real maple syrup which is great. I added some toast on the side so I could dunk into my eggs, which was an upcharge. We really enjoyed the food, it wasn't gourmet cuisine but pretty tasty stuff, coffee was also good with as many refills as you want. The coffee though, is $3.50 but everything is up these days. The server was extremely nice and helpful and attentive. All in all a great experience and we would definitely return again. They have a really cool gift shop on the way in before you walk into the restaurant area with some interesting candies in it too.
