I saw a story on the local news about this restaurant that offered not only great tasting Southern cooking, but great tasting South Carolina cooking. Being a native of SC I had to check this place out. It is a small and upcoming business, but the food rivals that of much larger Southern cuisine spots I've been to in the South. The menu is wide ranging and includes seafood, fried, smothered and BBQ chicken and baked turkey wings. Everything we tried was delicious and I even had ro grab some whole chicken wings to go. Soul food. Delivered? Soul food. Delivered! This was incredible. I've been meaning to visit Allie B's for more years than I can count. Kizzy has participated in a bunch of charity events I've attended, and I had fallen in love with her ability to take simple ingredients, and turn them into comforting and delicious meals. Yet for some reason, I can't seem to find a way to make it out to her restaurant. Part of the issue is that I've been trying to eat healthier lately, and fried chicken just hasn't been part of my diet. But just the other week, I was out in the yard doing some serious raking of wet, frozen over leaves. And after that cooking was out of the question. So I decided on delivery. That's when I noticed I could get this soul satisfying food brought to my door, ordered through the Yelp app, for just an additional dollar! It felt too good to be true. Not only did it work, but the food arrived hot, and even faster than the fastest estimate. Which isn't to say the experience was entirely bump free. The sweet potato fries I ordered turned into conventional fries. And the chicken wing dinner came to the door as a chicken leg dinner. However, there was also a container inside the bag with a five dollar bill in it. Presumably that was to make up for the on-the-fly changes. None of it mattered once I got into the divine trinity of macaroni and cheese, collard greens, and candied yams. There is something about those three dishes when paired together, that just feels right. It's like a three part harmony, where each piece is better thanks to the other two. More than anything, this strengthens my resolve to make it into the restaurant and give the food the respect it deserves. One thing I won't be ordering in the future though is the rice and beans. I've had Kizzy's black eyed peas, and those were fantastic. I was hoping for something equally satisfying. But this side is simply rice with a smattering of black beans tossed into the mix. Lesson learned. Should I do delivery again, sticking to sides is going to be my priority. But I may try the grilled chicken or ribs with barbecue sauce. Those might fare better in the styrofoam containers than hot fried chicken. So many lessons learned. The most important one though is that I'm never going to order a pizza for delivery every again. The waiter told me that the online prices hadn't been updated. They then told me that they only had wings, so I would get three wings and nothing more. The macaroni and cheese was cheesy and creamy and was not watery. It was cooked well not too hard or too soupy. The Candied yams were good but tasted as if it had a little to much spice. First, the only beverages available were Snapple Ice Tea, Dr Pepper, Orange soda and bottled water. No diet beverages for diabetics except the water. Overcharged? -- We got charged $30.22 for two fried chicken meals but their online menu linked here to yelp states the prices are $10.99 per dinner. We got charged $30.22 which makes no sense if it's $22 ($10.99 per fried chicken meal) then some tax and we got hit with $30.22 for takeout. Either we got overcharged or the menu needs to be radically updated. We didn't order any special sides. As a matter of fact we had the list of included sides read to us during the order process. We were moving fast so we didn't ask about the extra $5 charge for take out. Also the menu could be explicit that a fried chicken meal is all drum sticks--not thigh, breast or any other chicken part. BUT the food tasted fine (see below). We also only got one set of plastic utensils. It was hard for two people to eat two meals with one fork and napkin. Staff--please double check before sending out the bags. I've been following this place for a few months but with Covid and all I hadn't gotten here yet. I was here today -- from out of state--- and had a hankering for fried chicken, mac and cheese and collard greens. There was already a line outside. It was a warm sunny day. Everyone outside waiting for food was in great spirits, good humored and all talking up the food they were about to receive for take out. We got two take out orders of the fried chicken dinner--which were deep friend drum sticks with a great simple seasoning--light breading and seasoning, a touch of salt, maybe some other ingredients but nothing that hid the fried chicken. The fact that I've found this restaurant is a true testament to the power of Yelp. Hidden below a house on Clinton Ave, I would have never noticed it driving by. Once inside, it felt as if we had stepped into someone's kitchen. We tried the corn bread, collard greens, potato salad, rice and beans, cabbage, mac and cheese, BBQ chicken, and turkey meatloaf. I'm not a fan of celery, so I was thrilled that this potato salad didn't have it, and found that it's one of the few restaurant made potato salads that I've enjoyed. It had just the right amount of tang from the vinegar. The mac and cheese was also one of my favorites in a restaurant. The turkey meatloaf tasted similar to my mom's, and everything else was quite good. The portions were ample, and they were happy to box up the leftovers for me. They offer free delivery with a $10 minimum, take credits, and most importantly, cook some great food. This is a place I will frequent as often as I can, and recommend to my friends and coworkers. Update: I had the takeout today, and while the food was 5 stars at the restaurant, I would rate it 3-4 stars after half an hour in a Styrofoam container. Try the ribs or the fried chicken...or get both at the same time. As for side dishes, I'm a big fan of the potato salad, the greens, and the macaroni and cheese. This spot is easy to miss when you're driving, but it's worth finding. You'll definitely be back once you've tried it once. We've also used them for catering a simple buffet.
