We ordered a few things to go: - Veggie Spring Roll & Pork Spring Roll; We ate these right away and loved! So crispy and flavorful. - 2 HK style egg tarts and 2 pastel de nata egg tarts; The HK one was good but maybe not the best batch? They tasted very dough-y. However, the Portuguese style tarts were delicious! The pastry is delightfully flaky. - Pineapple Bun w/Coconut Filling; Fantastic flavor, texture was a little dry. Overall I think everything might've benefited more from being eaten right away instead of hours later / next day, but that said, I'm looking forward to getting more Marupo Eats in the future! Heard they might be looking into options for being more available on an ongoing basis, so looking out for that and look forward to supporting. I believe you can also currently order direct from them which is a cool option! Updating to 5 stars after Bennett's (super speedy!) response - I feel confident that this is typically an amazing product and am very excited to have egg tarts available in Ann Arbor!

You really can't…read morebeat a freshly baked one directly from the oven from Lord Stow's after eating a pork chop bun, or from King Bakery while waiting for your flight at HKG. When I saw that Marupo Eats made authentic egg tarts every Saturday at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market (and in popups all over Ann Arbor), I had to visit. This weekend, they were out of the HK Cookie Crust ones, but they had the Pastel de Nata and some other delicious looking treats in the hot box. Pastel de Nata ($4) - This seem to be more of a Macau-style Portuguese egg tart than Hong Kong Style, with a flaky pastry shell and a nicely browned custard. The first thing I noticed was the size - these are around 2.5inch diameter on the top which seems a bit on the smaller side (although I could be misremembering how big they normally are). We ordered three in total and found these to be a little inconsistent. The first we ate had a very nice, delicately crisp crust, with a sweet and decadent filling. The second one had a very hard and overbaked crust that was hard to chew. I would have thought they were all made in the same batch so it was kind of strange. The guy manning the booth mentioned that they hand make the puff pastry and that they're in the process of moving commercial kitchens, so maybe that could explain the inconsistency? (4/5) Pineapple Bun ($5) - These are a bit smaller than a typical pineapple bun, maybe about half to 2/3 the volume. As I lifted it up, I noticed that it felt very dense for the size. I loved the scored cookie topping - it's well baked with a very nice and rich crunch in addition to having great aesthetics. The construction is pretty unique - in a usual pineapple bun, the crust is in a nice layer right on top of the bun, but this one goes all the way to the bottom and even underneath the bun. As a special twist, there's a bit of coconut paste baked in, which adds a nice coconutty fruitiness. The sweetness overall is very well balanced, not too sweet, which is perfect. The crust on top is delicious, but I think the bun itself might need a bit of work. I found it to be too dense with only very small air pockets, making the bun not fluffy at all (see pictures). I wonder if it's because the thicker and heavier cookie crust layer that surrounds the entire bun isn't allowing the dough to rise? It's still a good pineapple bun but could be better with a fluffier interior. (4/5) We also got a small sample of the hot HK-style milk tea, which I thought balanced the creaminess of the milk and the sweetness well. I'm not an expert, but I'm used to HK-style milk tea that's extremely strong and potent. I found the tea to be a little on the weaker side, but overall the drink was quite pleasant tasting. Marupo Eats has some of the most authentic HK/Macau-style egg tarts and other treats in Michigan. I'd gladly buy from them again whenever I'm at the farmers market and I recommend giving them a try.

We got a blueberry pie (freshly baked), an apple strudel and half a poppy seed strudel (both frozen). You can get the strudels either freshly baked or frozen to bake later; same with the pies, I suspect. The pie and apple strudel are the absolute best I've ever had, and I grew up with a grandma who made these desserts! The poppy seed strudel was also very good, but it has raisins, which is traditional, but I personally don't like very much. The apple strudel does not have raisins - yay! Gretchen does heritage baking, hence the desserts are not overly sweet, which I really appreciated. They are perfect!

The only thing I wish, is that it was stroller friendly. It's mostly gravel so it's very inconvenient and probably damaging to the stroller. I understand it's a farm though (and that they have a separate cafe). Anywho, there is a whole parking lot for people to park and then an area for shopping for fresh veggies and bread. And there is a separate area by a lovely willow tree where you can get coffee, their home made root beer (will have to try that next time), and pastries. Now the pastries were AMAZING!!! I got their chocolate croissant and jalapeno popper croissant. Both were sooo delicious!! The chocolate croissant was very close to how Quebec makes them. It was soft and had the right amount of chocolate! The Jalapeno popper croissant filling was sooo unique and tasty!! I loved it! I will definitely be back! Oh and I sampled their mango lassi and it was delicious! I also appreciated the space where kids can feed and look at the goats and llama. There is a little pond play area too. And a beautiful garden! There probably is even more, I didn't get to see everything since it was hard to navigate with the stroller. Will bring a carrier next time.

The bread was very good, filled with Kalamata olives. The morning bun sort of reminded me of a croissant with cinnamon sugar in a spiral shape, it was decent, but I wouldn't get it again. The stand was very busy, they had a large variety of things, I wasn't able to check out anything besides the baked goods. Ok get bread again, next time I go to Eastern Market.

Oh. My. God. I…read morefound Al Meida's delectable Algerian pastries while at the Detroit Second Annual Holiday Food Bazaar held at Eastern Market. The name on the advertisement for the event attracted my attention, but I was not prepared for such a sweet, elegant woman selling sophisticated pastries beyond my experience. She laid out half-moon pastries on beautiful, inscribed plates and had mysterious, spice-infused cookies spread over her table. The sweet, exotic scents unlocked the doors to the southern Mediterranean and the culinary crossroads of Africa, French and Italian influences, and Arabic elements. At once I was hooked, and divested of all the cash I brought in one go. I had to try a little of everything as I bought a little of this sticky cookie and a bit of that lemon-brushed pastry. Names were unfamiliar, but the tastes immediately opened up a sun-baked world on my tongue. The surreal touches of citrus and dates blended together on my palate. My beau, a lifelong Detroiter, had significantly more experience with the Chaldean, Iraqi, and Arabic bakeries in Dearborn. We rationed out our purchases in small bites while sitting elbow to elbow at a rough bench which faced the glorious skyline of Detroit. This, in a nutshell, embodied the spirit of the city. Al Meida's crowning confection is the kaab el ghazal -- "gazelle horns" -- which are an almond paste-filled crescent moon "cookie" (but rightly they're a pastry) wrapped in orange blossom and rosewater infused pastry. The first bite taken a few steps away was an explosion of flavours and sensate impressions. My beau and I shared the kaab el ghazal in the mute silence brought by contentment, appreciation, and trying to experience how good something is. We only bought three and should have gone back for the rest. The baked products, their appearance, and the savoury flavours are good enough to wax poetic upon. I sailed off to a distant shore and discovered an unknown craving for orange blossom and other newly found subtle tastes. Al Meida has made her way out to Ferndale's Rust Belt Market on Sundays, thankfully sparing me trying to wend my way out to Ann Arbor's farmer's markets. An hour on the freeway on Saturday morning I could do without. This is another of Detroit's many gems, and I cannot laud the exotic delights waiting to be sampled care of enchanting Algerian recipes and considerable care for quality.
