I'm a big fan of Gom Shabu Shabu. Back in the day if I wasn't at Mini Hot Pot on Buford Highway you could find me at Gom Shabu Shabu off of Satellite Blvd. Gom Shabu Shabu was the first popular Korean shabu shabu/hot pot spot in Atlanta. Their broth and fresh vegetables and dope dipping sauce had me coming back often. So this location opened up and we started coming here more. The broth is still very good and love how they make the sauces for you. You can still go up and make your own sauce mix but I prefer the ones they make. They have four different spice levels. I go back and forth from the premium beef and the regular beef. Both are good to me. I really like the things they have for the platter here. My favorite is the imitation crab piece (don't judge me), the fish cake, glass noodles, and the Korean rice cake. They also will give you bean sprouts if you ask for it. I also like to get the Korean jook (porridge) or noodles (udon or kahl kook soo) at the end of the meal. There is an extra charge for those items but its worth it. I also like the partially closed off individual tables here which makes it feel more intimate. They also have the good ole Korean call button that you can use if your server goes MIA or if it's hard to flag one down because of the partitions. Feel free to use it as often as you need for water refills, broth refills, more sauce, and your check. The past couple of times I've been the service has been so so... I've had to ring the bell for stuff unlike other places that would check up on while dining in. They are very prompt in getting you the refills that you ask for as well as bringing out your initial order. The only thing that was odd was that about an hour before they closed they had a last call for more sauce. That was the first time I experienced that and thought it was weird to close off the sauces when the place doesn't close for another hour... They used to have an AYCE option. We been coming here for over 10 years. There has been few owner changes and quality and service has been getting worse and worse and today was enough! Food quality and quantity has been worse.. they are charging more but giving less meat. Today we had 4 adults and 2 kids. As soon as we sat, the owner told me even though we are not getting a pot they will be charged $15 and Im like your menu says $10. Then she says oh yeah you are right $10. After we were done and pressing the button for service many times she finally came and I asked for the check and gave her our card. She came back wout a receipt and for us to sign w a total where she hand written the tip. She said they add 20% tip for 6 or more people but this was never done before. So I said ok.. can I see the full receipt. She brings it to me and I see our subtotal and does not match 20% tip. The owner decided to add more than 20% tip of the grand total. So i told her you dont take tip from tax.. you take the 20% before tax. She goes oh yes you are right then immediately says ill give you the $3 back. Im like no keep it but you just lost a customer. $3 for tip would have been fine if I did not feel scammed. She knew that she overcharged $3 but decided that its ok as long as customer did not notice. Scamming customers for pettiness.. what a shame! Will definitely be never going back! read more

Our fault for going back after the last bad experience. 2 terrible experiences with the owner/manager. He is literally pushing away customers and telling you how to eat and what not to do! I used to come here once a week when I lived in GA, so I brought my family back for dinner today. But I was very disappointed and uncomfortable with the experience of the new manager. When my family sat down, he came up to us and told us that everything in price went up, so we can't waste our food. The food we paid for. I understand that they don't want people to be wasteful, but this was before we even began to eat or start the buffet. Additionally, when we ordered our sauces for the table, he intervened with the waiter to complain to us that we ordered too many-- even though we finished all the servings. He wouldn't leave us alone during our dinner, and came to our table 3 times. The final time, he said he smelt something with our food and came, reached over, and turned my son's hot pot off while we were still all dining. When he wasn't bothering us, he was in the corner watching a television show. He was extremely unprofessional and after coming here for years, this place has definitely gone downhill with service and quality. I've been here several times years ago but decided to give this place another try today. The food is not as good as other shabu places around the area. We had 3 adults and 2 kids, one is 1 years old and one is 4 years old. The reason for the one star is that I had got one little bunch of noodle for each of my kids. The 4 year old ate his and the 1 year old didn't even touch hers. Keep in mind that this portion is something I could've eaten myself from the vegetable buffet. When we got the bill they ended up charging $5.99 for the both of the kids. I was very surprised that they would even charge at all let alone $6! Especially for my one year old. (It's just common decency to only get the amount you can actually finish - there's a sign up to remind you if you forget ) A shabu platter used to provide one egg that came with it, but I didn't see it at the veggie bar. So I asked the waitress and she said they give one to you if you ask for it, which seemed unfair for those who wouldn't know an egg comes with it and wouldn't know to ask.. and it's not like they let you know, I had to ask HER if they don't give an egg anymore....... so conclusion: ask for your egg! Mediocre food for the price you pay. Went there with the wife and the place looked fine. Nothing fancy but not run down. Restaurant was clean which is important with a help yourself bar. No problem with the service as others have mentioned. The issue I had was with the quality of the food. While some of the ingredients looked fresh, some were not. We got the beef lunch special and the price was nothing special. It literally came out with about 6-7 very thinly sliced beef. I've been here a couple of times and I've enjoyed both times. There's another location off of satellite blvd. with the same name, (not sure if they're affiliated with one another). They offer a lunch special on weekdays. $10.99 for regular beef platter which includes a plate of mixed veggies and glass noodles and a plate of thinly sliced beef. The way shabu shabu works is they give you a pot of broth and you cook your food in it. It's basically like asian style fondue. They have a sauce bar that you use to accompany your meats/veggies. They offer to make the sauce here for you. You can either get mild, spicy or really spicy. I like my sauce somewhere in between spicy and really spicy. You can either order items a la carte but I like to order the platters for the variety. The service here is good. There's a call button at every table if you need your server for any reason but the servers are pretty attentive so I didn't have to use the button either time I've dined here. As soon as I entered, a waiter was ready to walk me to my table. I was starving and it was cold and gloomy outside....aka perfect for Shabu Shabu. You can be in and out of this place in 30 minutes! (Quick dinner) I always get regular beef ($14.99). They ask you what kind of sauce you want (mild, regular or spicy) or you can go make your own sauce at the sauce Station. I got regular and it was still a little spicy. They pour the broth at your individual Shabu bowl. Your veggies come out first. I will list the veggie plate in the order you should put them in the boiling broth: egg, corn, broccoli, purple cabbage, sausage, fish cake, rice cake, crab meat, bok Choy, regular cabbage, tofu, bean sprouts, clear noodle. This is just my personal preference. I eat my eggs boiled. The rice cake doesn't take long I only cook it for couple minutes til its chewy. Other than the egg corn and broccoli, I only put half of the cabbage in until the meat. Once the meat comes out, I just sort of take turns cooking meat and veggie. There's really no one right way. Once you're done you can ask them to make a rice porridge with the leftover broth (I believe like $3 charge or so) and it is pretty delicious. I'm almost always too fulll to do it but I sometimes get it even when I'm full and I still end up eating it all. I wish I could just order the rice porridge early in the meal. It was my first time there so I had to be coached a bit. You order the meat and then you get a plate full of veggies, corn, tofu, half of a hot dog, rice cake, noodles, and an egg. Im not into boiling meat but its a good place for people to eat light and healthy. The sauce was good and they will refill it. It didnt seem like you can get a refill of the veggies but at the end, you can order rice to make porridge at the end. Im kinda used to a big hot pot where you share but this place has those individual hot pots. They dont make the rice porridge for you so you need to know what you are doing. I am giving the one and only star due to the fact that I was promptly seated when I arrived. But here is my negatives. 1. I have never had Shabu Shabu before and I had no clue how it worked. So, I ordered my lunch and all the goods came. However, no one gave me a good explanation on how to cook things properly or how to eat it properly. I had to guess and felt like most of my food ended up in the hot pot of stock. 2. I rarely had anyone check on me. The hot tea I had was HORRIBLE. No taste and in a drinking glass instead of a tea cup. Looked tacky. I wasn't even offered a glass of water to go with my meal. 3. I was told at the beginning that someone would come by and teach me the proper method. No one did. I just had someone drop off some sauce. 4. The food was hard to eat. If you don't know how things are done, then it made for a meal not worth eating. I am sorry, you might be a busy place, but when I explained at the beginning that I had never had this type of cuisine and you never come back to check or explain, it became a turn off. First of all, my friends and I came in for lunch on a weekday, only to find out they weren't serving from their lunch menu ($10.99). Didn't ask why, although I was pretty confident that noon is considered lunchtime, probably because I was afraid I would get a b.s reason in return. So I ended up ordering from the $16.99 dinner menu, which had the portion size of lunch. When I finished my meal, I was still hungry, so I was forced to order extra things like noodle and porridge to fill my sad stomach. Service was ok. Very disappointed and will not go back to the place with bad business conduct. It was my wife's favorite place (once a week or two maybe more she went). We all went today for lunch (wife, 10 yrs, 3 years, 2 years) after church service. Past experiences (dining with young kids) made us order more than we could consume to make the restaurant ppl happy (usually tip 30% when I dine with kids). So we ordered 2 adults meal and 2 kids meal which I thought was enough for all of us. Then a guy came by asking my youngest one's age then went away. 5 min later a young lady came by again asking the age of the youngest again then she left. Few minutes later she came back saying they have to charge her $4.99 for vegetable buffet. I got already annoyed the 2nd time when the lady came because I knew they were trying to find a way to charge us more. I asked the waitress why she didn't explain to me the buffet option when I ordered. We just ordered the food knowing we wont be able to eat. I asked to cancel kids meal and asked to charge all 3 kids for buffet. Thats when the waiter came back saying, "oh we start charing from 3yrs old. Your youngest one is free." Really? When I asked for the check, the very waiter charged my youngest one which made me believe they just changed the minimum age policy because I challenged. They charged $4.99 and made whatever profit today, but they lost customers with bad taste in the mouth that will last for a long time. I had previously visited with an ok experience that I would've rated 2-3 stars but this last visit really prompted this bad review. I was denied service at 9:47pm on a Monday night. They have posted closing hours are at 11pm. The reason they gave me for refusing to seat me is that their kitchen closes at 10pm. First off, I arrived before 10pm. Second, why would you advertise a closing time if you're not going to serve anyone prior to it? Third, the whole point of hotpot is cooking your own food at your own table so how much does the kitchen really need to do anyway 1+ hours prior to closing?!?! Beware of the lunch hour traffic. This place gets quite busy during lunch, so if you want to get the full appeal, go later in the afternoon, or for dinner. Food: Typical shabu. They say that it is an all vegetable broth, so no worries vegetarians. You get some good veggies, whatever protein you choose, and your desired heat for the sauce. I like to mix a little cilantro in my sauce, absolute perfection. They will give you more veggies if you ask, as well as the bean sprouts and sauce. Little tutorial for those who have never been. They will seat you and fill your pot with broth. Once they get your order, they will bring you the veggies. Turn the heat on. I like to go ahead and get some of the cabbage cooking. This way when the protein gets there, the cabbage will be nice and thoroughly cooked. The protein does not take long to cook so get the veggies going. Now when the protein gets there, I like to give it a quick swim in the broth, then wrap it in the cabbage, with some bean sprouts, and a good helping of the sauce. No real rule, cook and eat how you like. The sauce is what makes it awesome, so don't be shy to get a few different sauces, and get a bit adventurous. Also, don't hesitate to adjust the heat accordingly, No need to let the broth boil vigorously if all the items inside are well cooked and you are just eating. Service: I do warn you again, lunch time is super busy, so avoid if at all possible. They are prompt at seating you, which is a plus. The waitstaff really does not come to check up on you, but there is a button on the table. Push the button and get prompt service. Never had a problem getting what I needed. Ambiance: Super casual. Now there is a lot of garlic going on, so this may not be the optimal date option, if you know what I mean. In addition, you may walk out of here smelling a little like food, because you did just cook your own food. Dranks: They have beer, korean rice wine, and soju. Soft drinks by the can. Def not a place to get your drink on, but they do have some options. Overall: I like me some shabu about once a week. You will get addicted. Across the street is a McD's. My husband and I have grown to like hot pot, especially since this Gom chain is close to where we live. The menu is pretty simple and it includes combos, single order items, and appetizers. My husband and I usually order the premium beef combo with seafood. The broth is pretty plain so we're thankful for the sauces, which is made to order depending on your desired spice tolerance but generally, the sauce formula is the same all around. The is to switch up cooking vegetables and meat so that way, your broth can gradually increase in flavor. I came here on Easter Sunday with my girlfriend and usually we'll both get shabu, but I ordered the cheese donkatsu this time (under the kid's menu huehuehue). How was it? Freakin' good. I loved every bit of it. You'd expect just cheese and pork, but nope.. THEY peppered it inside (thumbs up)! Super savory and hot. Oh, can't forget the fresh sliced tomatoes and plenty veggies. Not a big fan of French fries (cutlet is already fried), but it wasn't bad. But my main reason for FIVE STARS is the staff. They're extremely nice, friendly, courteous, and professional. Usually the dish I ordered comes with rice, but the server apologized immediately and told me due to rice going out all at once I'd had to wait for 10-15minutes. I liked the fact that he told me upfront and was very sincere. Seriously, he cared about his customers!! And because it took so long he even offered a free drink! Great place for shabu shabu on a cold winter day! We had reservations for a party of 7 and we were seated in a private room. I got their premium beef shabu for $14.99. A huge platter of fresh veggies, a few dumplings, glass noodles, an egg and a hot dog link. The amount of beef was disappointing. I could've easily eaten 3 servings of this beef. That's a shame because the beef was super tender and flavorful. FYI, wait till they bring your sauce to you before you add the ingredients into the hot pot. They make the dipping sauce for you based on the level of spiciness. I got mine medium spicy and it was perfect. Full of flavor and spice, with small chunks of raw green peppers and garlic. At the end, I ordered a side of udon($1.99) to finish off my meal. There was a service button in our room and within a few seconds of pressing it, a server appeared and took excellent care of us. This is my go-to place when I am craving hot pot. Every time I go I always get the premium beef because it's just $1 more than the regular beef.
