I've been going here for years and generally love it. There are some opportunities for improvement though: (1) There is only one rowing machine. 1 out of every 2 times I want to use it, I either have to wait on someone else or someone else has to wait on me. I've requested another rowing machine on their periodic email survey multiple times, to no avail. I wouldn't be surprised if the one rower disappears one day due to the gradual takeover of CrossFit equipment. (2) There's very little open space thanks to a gradual but steady takeover of CrossFit equipment. You have to weave around people and weights, which is a hazard, just to get to the cardio area. (3) They don't seem to do much upkeep of the treadmills. The very same treadmills have been off (e.g., too loud of a sound when you run on it, indicating parts need replacing) for years. It makes me wonder if they've replace any of the belts or done other standard maintenance that is important for ensuring the machines stay lower impact & true to the speed indicated on the screen. (4) I've never seen staff cleaning the machines. I used to work at another gym and it's good practice to have staff clean a few types of machines each hour on a rotating basis. This is particularly important since many patrons don't clean after themselves, and patrons don't (nor should) clean parts of the machine they don't personally touch like the base. read more

I'm a paying member from College Park MD and was here in Richmond on a work assignment. I parked my car outside and it ended up getting towed during the hour that I was inside working out. Come to find out, members have to have a parking sticker on their car or else they'll be towed. They don't communicate this effectively AT ALL other than a piece of paper at the front desk that has small text stating you may be towed if you don't have a parking sticker (in a long paragraph) and they expect people to come in and immediately read it and ask for a sticker? I'm not from the area and because of them not being more communicative about it, I have to pay $195. The female manager who I spoke to after gave a terrible attitude and said it's not her responsibility that I didn't pay attention to the sheet and that's the best they can do to communicate it. BS! You should know out of state members would have no clue and when we first arrived and said it was our first time there, you should immediately mention the parking sticker! Golds gym is the worst and they would literally ROB you. Firstly, they do not even allow you to cancel your membership through their website, you have to go to the exact location you created your account which Is crazy and I had moved somewhere far from the location I registered and tried to cancel in the closest one to me and they told me to go back to the exact location that I registered which I finally did and months after I'm getting a call saying that I'm owing $297. This is honestly not acceptable and so frustrating. read more

Biggest complaint: Needs more bathrooms and ones that are not "out of order" on a regular basis. I am locked in to a good monthly price and I live nearby and with my schedule I'm here on non-peak hours--- so I love it for the convenience. read more

Gym itself is fine (kind of a horror movie funhouse of corridors and mirrors) but their relationship with Shank's Towing, an extraordinarily poorly reviewed towing company, completely invalidates their credibility. My friend, who has been a member of Gold's for years and primarily attends a different location, got towed late at night from their parking lot. Shank's employees were unfriendly on the phone, but when we arrived to pick up his car at 11pm (with work in the morning), the office was empty and they wouldn't let him get his car back (at an insanely high rate - $200 for about an hour?) until midnight. Also, his wallet and ID were both in the car (because why would you bring those into a gym?) and both the staff member on the phone and a deeply defensive and unnecessarily angry driver stubbornly refused to have any conversation about getting his wallet out of the car. Even if we could leave, we were then trapped waiting for midnight to get his wallet, let alone his car. Car towing is an (un)necessary evil, but there are much more professional and credible organizations to use if you need enforcement for your parking lot. For that reason, the Harvie St. Gold's Gym has lost my respect. read more

I legitimately hopped through 4 separate treadmills before finding a working one (like all the buttons work). Of course, the cooldown button didn't work on that when I tried to stop my workout. The consequence of this gym's leadership's irresponsibility is that my car was towed this afternoon while I was working out. When I approached the front desk to ask what might have happened to my vehicle, the workers shared with me that towing was instituted recently. The workers then mentioned a pass, offered one, but hinted that I should share my story with leadership. It appears that workers knew that instituting a towing policy without appropriately warning customers could be bad for business. There was no email campaign, telephone messaging, in house flyering or communication at check in. Also, there are no posted signs warning of the risk of towing for members in the parking lot itself. While I was having this conversation with the manager, a significant number of members entered and announced that they were also unaware. Will be cancelling my membership. read more

I am highly allergic to stupid stuff. I received a promotional flyer in the mail yesterday for Golds' Gym in the Fan and decided to check it out since it's a lot closer to where I live than my current gym and I haven't been to the Fan location in MANY years. So, I wanted to see how much it'd changed and to determine if it'd be a good option for me to switch. Well, it only took 1 minute to decide it wouldn't be. When I arrived, the girl at the desk said she'd show me around after I filled out their liability form. Liability form? For what? I didn't come to work out. I came to look around. So, they apparently require all guests to fill out a "liability form" simply for being in the building! This form asks for your name, address, phone number, age, and I forget what else. Seems much more like a marketing tool, which was overkill since they already marketed to my home address via the promotional flyer. And if the form were in fact for liability purposes, I know how to walk just fine. Been doing it for decades. But apparently just WALKING through your facility puts me at risk. Not a place I want to be anyway. I'm not in the habit of just freely giving out my personal information to welcome spam, junk mail, possible identity theft and whatever else. Been going to this gym for 6 years. I wish I could give it a good review but I can't. I finally cancelled my membership and joined the Y. The gym is too small for the number of members and the result is: Dirty, worn out equipment that is frequently in need of repair, water fountains are usually pretty disgusting- pink mold, other unidentifiable gunge (my word), Hand sanitizers frequently empty, No space to work out in the big room upstairs b/c the instructors are hogging it for their private lessons. So far, the Downtown Y has been a much better experience. read more

I've reached out multiple times to finalize the process on cancelling my membership after leaving the area only to be put off or pointed in another misdirection so they can continue to charge me. I really enjoyed Blink fitness so switching over to this gym has been interesting. Pros good variety of equipment and machines Daily classes at convenient times Sauna Cons Too expensive. For half of my current membership I could pay go to Blink fitness and bring a friend for free They were not transparent about which gold gyms I could go to. Member for a while. Cary town location is small in every part of the gym and made woGym owners also sell warm up area space upstairs to personal trainers. This is a public space they will interrupt your workout to force you to leave. I visited Richmond about a year ago looking at houses and did a guest pass to the gym and the fan I was really excited about the opportunity to join once I bought my house and moved in but quickly realized the gym is very small and you have to walk around looking for plate weights because they're not very organized and they're all over the place. Additionally recently there at Forssman of Mask no Mask policy has been inconsistent and quite honestly aggravating as sometimes it's OK not to wear a mask and other times it is not. I think I'm going to cancel I have the multi club membership and I enjoy a couple of the other locations but overall this is the closest to my house read more

As I walked in ( Lexi with blonde hair ) stared at me with annoyance as If I was taking up her time while she was flirting with another guy, laughing having a good time and I was an inconvenience to them. After finishing and signing the paper work for my "1 day trial" ( not 7 day like most other gyms, thank goodness it's only 1 day because I will not be coming back) she asked if "she can help me anything else". She did not give me a tour nor direct me to where anything is at, so I was walking in blind into an unorganized messy gym. Terrible customer service. I tried to cancel my membership but they ask me to come in, when I come in and fill out the form they tell me it's all taken care of but then I continue getting billed. I call them again and they tell me to email their manager who I've tried to get in contact with multiple times with no response, and when I call them now they ask me to come in AGAIN to cancel my membership. Very disappointed, I wouldn't sign up unless you plan on being a member for like as they'll make you jump through hoops to cancel. read more

This gym sucks. It is nothing like the Gold's gym in Arlington. Staff obviously has a morale issue. PT were very unhelpful. Machines were all over the crazy layout. The only gym in the downtown area that is 24/7 (That I know of). Cleanliness is a hit or miss when I come to visit this location. Most of the times around 1am-5am the men's locker room is not kept tidy. Recently they added new floors, which is a plus. I do think it is time to upgrade the showers starting with all the rusted metal holders. They need to be tossed and new ones need to be bought. read more

Nice gym, clean enough, decent price....but good luck trying to cancel membership if you ever need to! I have spent the last 6 months trying to close out my membership after moving out of the area. I've had people tell me I CAN cancel over the phone, I've had people tell me I CANT cancel over the phone, I've had people tell me all I had to do was email a certain employee to cancel, I've had people tell me all I had to do was fill out a form, I've been told I had to hand write a USPS letter (wtf?) and NOT ONE of those things has worked....again, it's been six months of this all to get out of a $10 per month membership. Was given a guest pass by a manager so I could try gym before getting a membership and when I went back in to use it, I was refused entry by a rude staff member and told I had to leave just because I did not have a Richmond address on my license, and then he confiscated the pass. read more

They will say anything to get you to sign a contract then will screw you over if you want to terminate your membership. Do not reward their dishonest behavior. Even if Golds looks like a better bargain, there are hidden costs everywhere. My girlfriend joined this gym with promises that she could bring in an out-of-town guest (me) for $5/visit. This was honored as long as the guy who made that promise worked here. When he moved on, I was told that "the guest fee is $15. They guy who said that shouldn't have made the promise." So I stopped working out here, while she continued on until the time of a work relocation. Good luck trying to cancel your membership. Long after they charged and processed a cancellation fee, they continued to bill her for monthly dues and some mysterious "annual maintenance fee" which is tacked on top of the advertised rate. Then if you try to talk with the management here, they direct you to email a subcontractor who handles the billing and cares even less about customer relations. read more

Omg, unbelievable! The front desk people were extremely rude to me my first time visiting. I simply wanted to try out the gym and determine whether or not I wanted to join. No such thing as a free day pass here. $10 just for a day! Most places these days are $10 for a month membership. I went to use the bathroom and there was no toilet paper, which is to be expected I guess, considering the lack of care/concern expressed by the employees. Gold's Gym in the Fan is the best deal I've found in the country, literally. The place is more than large enough as long as you don't go between 5-8 pm. The variety of machines is amazing, the staff remembers everyone's names, and the same people work out daily at the same time. It's great to have a routine for your workout, even better to have a routine with who else works out. The locker room is large, clean, and comfortable. Best of all it's only about $33/mo for a membership here. The only gym I liked more than this was the Cascade in Vail, CO. It was about twice as large, had basketball, ping pong, tennis, swimming, HUGE saunas, and luxury locker rooms, but it also ran $160 a month for non residents, and $80 a month for residents. Gold's Gym in the fan is my gym of choice. I suggest that if you are die hard serious about working out you go here instead of Willow Lawn. That gym is meant for awing over other people and getting phone numbers, but is often way too crowded to break a sweat. read more

I will start with the limited amount of good things about this gym. First the staff is always friendly. Bekalu helped me cancel my membership and was nothing but friendly and courteous. He made the process very straightforward and easy, and filled me in on everything I needed to know. When I didn't like what I heard, and got a little upset, the remained friendly, calm, and professional. Also, the workout room upstairs is great to use when there are no classes going on. Unfortunately this only allowed for weekend afternoons for me, and was generally unavailable. Now the bad. There isn't a lot of space in this gym and it is also very crowded at peak times. I have been there a few times when every treadmill has been taken. There also isn't a lot of floor space to do other types of exercises. They have a tiny room for women only which is kind of nice, but it is almost too small to do anything in. And finally, the most annoying thing about this gym is that I apparently signed a 2 year contract! I certainly do not remember this. But having to pay 3 months of membership fees to cancel is pretty ridiculous! Nowadays it's so easy to figure out how to do nontraditional workouts outside of a gym that this place is not even worth it a little bit. I have been exercising more often since I stopped going here, and started to exercise at home. I dreaded my workouts when they were at Gold's. read more

This gym is in an extremely convenient location for myself. Its in the Fan and between my job and apartment. I ride my bike there often and they have a rack to lock it to so that's cool. Not a high traffic gym compared to the Willow Lawn location. They could go heavier on the dumbbells (100lbs+) but they have decent core apparatus and now kettle bells up to 50 lbs which is awesome. Good amount of cardio equipment upstairs and downstairs. The rooms have a good flow, all machines, the main room has a mix for free weights, heavy equipment, and plenty off mirrors. From there it branches off to an upstairs and back room cardio area. Because of its size, I'm sure, they do have less classes to attend (spin, aerobics etc) than the Willow Lawn location. There also isn't childcare in case you need that. read more

A great gym for people who want to stand around and not work out. The gym is SMALL and the class schedule is a joke. The weight area is about as big as a garage and your constantly walking on top of people. I would go to the gym during these times to avoid the rush 630-730 a.m and also between 1 and 2 pm during the weekdays and still crowded. If your looking for a class outside of the normal times ( the crazy insane rush of people late afternoons and early mornings) your out of luck. The gym also lacks equipment like weights belts (which I know I have my own but its nice to have one there Also trying to get in touch with management is like pulling teeth and your treated like a number anyways so don't expect consumer loyalty anywhere or anytime. My advice is run away as fast as you can if your a serious athlete or body builder. If you just wanna go run a treadmill and look at people I guess Gold's is ok..... read more

I love this Gold's gym location. I started coming to this location versus the Mechanicsville one which is closest to me because the customer service was better at this one and I like how the personal trainers aren't pushy like at the Mechanicsville location. I really enjoy the set up of this gym as well as the features like the sauna. My workouts here are always enjoyable and the staff is always friendly and welcoming. read more

This gym is pretty sweet. Avoid the first of the year rush and you're golden. The staff is really friendly, as it's small enough that they get to know you, and the equipment is great. The locker rooms as pretty much always clean and lockers are not hard to come by. At times the classes can be a bit jam packed but really i can't blame them, they're great classes. The time that i spend at Golds in the fan is spent working out, not waiting for a piece of equipment to become available. If you're looking for a standard local gym, this is it. Only down sides are, no gym (b-ball court), no pool. read more

Yes it's smaller than your average membership gym, but everyone that works there is super friendly... Everything is always clean and although I haven't checked out any classes yet, I hear good things about them. What I enjoy particularly about this location is the amount of "serious" gym goers. Watching others is not only motivating and inspiring buy instructional. Rush hour from 5-6pm can be pretty crowded especially in the free-weight area. Clean equipment, good availability, and friendly staff; you can't ask for much more out of a gym. When it came time for me to move, canceling my membership was simple. No arguing or theatrics like I've had at other gyms. Just a 2 minute chat with an upbeat manager and I was on my way. If I ever move back to Richmond I know exactly where to go. read more

This gym serves its purpose as my 2nd gym home as I typically use American Family Fitness. It has plenty of equipment to get the job done. I use the gym mid day or late at night so it isn't uber packed which allows for a comfortable workout experience. I will Say I initially signed up for a 7 day pass to check the gym out before joining and was told that free pass was only available if I signed up for a membership and paid $1. So technically there was no free pass. I don't like the bait and switch technique when it comes to advertising. Other than that it's nothing to write home about but better than my apartment gym on days when I don't want to drive to AMFAM. read more

So the manager was quite the royal pain in the ass. Just moving from Iowa , I made the mistake of thinking that all of the golds gyms were interconnected. Coming from a city of 60,000, most of the franchises worked that way. Apparently in Richmond, Gold's Gym is competing with another franchise that also owns Gold's Gym. I did not know that until , I made the mistake of walking into the "competitors" gym. The manager basically stated that it wasn't ok for me to do that and he was low key flexing. Firstly, dude was like 5"3, so I know he had the whole Napoleon complex ordeal going on. Then he said that they didn't want me working out at their gym because I am the competition. Well, if it's competition, why not try to win me over to your franchise as opposed to push me away. Hmmm. read more
