Simply the best. tl;dr : ReDefine is the total package - great, supportive, fun environment, highly customized workouts and nutrition plans, incredibly knowledgeable staff. Semi-personal training is a great method for a gym, and I'm a loyal convert. You get the benefit of a social atmosphere while also working with all the trainers. Each of the trainers have their own individual style, and working with different people gives you the added benefit of multiple perspectives. Whatever your goals, they have an approach to get you there. My fitness journey has been a tough one. I work hard, but results can be slow and inconsistent. I've tried many approaches, but this has been the most successful. The great thing about Cyp, Ben, and Roc is that they really know their stuff and don't have a one-size-fits-all approach. They work with you as an individual to customize a workout and nutrition plan that will work for you. The approach is based on scientific research and years of practical experience. And if you don't see results? They recalibrate and try another method - diet, workout, or both! If you have an injury? They adapt exercises and show you stretches to take care of your body. If you're going to be away traveling? They'll email you travel workouts you can do in various environments so you stay on track. I've done p90x, Insanity, and similar workouts. I was unsure that a personal trainer would be worth the money when I had these programs as resources. What I realized is that nothing can compare to the individualized attention you get here. But because of the semi-personal structure (1-6 clients at a time), you don't feel like you're being watched awkwardly, and the guys are all really friendly and fun to be around. But they also get to know you and your specific needs, they can adapt your program when you plateau, they can help you build up to a higher intensity at a pace that's right for you. You won't find a group of trainers with more knowledge, experience, and genuine commitment than these guys. I'm particular and thorough in seeking out doctors, restaurants, you name it. I interviewed 8 different gyms/trainers in the area before I joined ReDefine. I definitely made the right choice. These small business owners have my highest recommendation.

I really enjoy working out here. I only go during 10K training since I have a gym membership…read moreelsewhere, but I always always enjoy going. First of all, you can park for free. That's right - hi, I'm at the James Center and I'm parking....FOR FREE! Second, you get to take the nice golden elevators from the marble lobby...I already feel like I'm on Celebrity Fit Club. They take you right to the gym, you walk out and BAM! Nice gym right in front of you. There aren't 10,000,000 machines to take up a lot of space, it's quiet, clean, bright, staff greets you when the elevator arrives...it's just - wonderful! (not to mention feeling relatively swanky that I'm working out at the James Center) A few of the treadmills look out a window that overlooks south side...I love that view! The locker rooms are super clean and they have a TRX studio, classes, lots and lots of goodies! I HIGHLY recommend this YMCA as a destination for your workout...yes, destination. It's really REALLY great.

Parking fee in the parking deck is waived when you request a sticker from the YMCA desk. Extremely convenient for those working in the area or even if you want to workout before happy hour in Shockoe Slip. Like the other Reviews state, this location is indeed smaller than other Richmond branches. Smaller rooms, less equipment, and even smaller class offerings. The ceilings feel a bit low and confined, compared to that of other locations. The wooden floors in the group exercise room are noticeably bouncy. I'm not sure if this is intentional. Staff is extremely friendly, informative, and professional. Good customer service seems to be a priority. The main drawback is that, unless you've already researched this place online, it's impossible to find. I have driven past this location regularly for years without knowing of its existence. Fortunately, the staff from other businesses inside the James Center building seem to be familiar with the fact that YMCA members are NOT familiar with this branch.

This is located within the student center of VCU's MCV campus. As a recent alum (and now member of the Alumni Association) I have access to both this gym and the Cary Street, all for $26/mo and no contract. It's a great deal IMO. As a runner converted to triathlete, I joined this gym for two main reasons: great pool and shower facilities by work. I often run on my lunch break, so I needed somewhere to shower during warmer weather. So far, so good. I do more than just swim and shower now too! Things I really like: *6 lane pool that is 25 meters and DOESN'T GET TAKEN up by kid's teams. YAAAY. VCU has a separate pool for its varsity teams. *Pool temp is cooler than others I've used *2 separate locker rooms- smaller for pool, huge for main gym *Keiser bikes. This is my favorite type of stationary bike for training. *Lockers that come with manual code-entry locks- no need to bring your own lock *Private and spacious showers *Doesn't seem to get overly crowded at peak times like conventional gyms Things I Don't Like: *Gym is fairly warm with bad ventilation (I'm a sweater as it is) *Non-student members use ID to enter and attendant has to manually look up. A little inconvenient. *Flimsy chairs in locker rooms. Would be nice to have bolted benches like normal locker rooms. *I'm also a member at Scott's Addition and find weight machines modern and nicer

The workout area is spacious and modern. The fitness area has a wide variety of cardio machines for students/customers. There's a stretching room with mats, yoga balls, and ab coasters to work on your core. There's a nice size pool and heated spa inside the center. The basketball courts are modern. On Saturdays, I occasionally play pickup basketball here with friends. There are racquetball and squash courts as well. The locker room area was remodeled. You can safely store your items while you workout. The staff is friendly. I give MCV Campus Recreation and Aquatic Center a 4.5 rating.
