Very clean YMCA. I was visiting from Colorado, just glad to have found one closer to me. Bring your own basketball if you want to play.

That's right - hi, I'm at the James Center and I'm parking....FOR FREE! Second, you get to take the nice golden elevators from the marble lobby...I already feel like I'm on Celebrity Fit Club. They take you right to the gym, you walk out and BAM! Nice gym right in front of you. There aren't 10,000,000 machines to take up a lot of space, it's quiet, clean, bright, staff greets you when the elevator arrives...it's just - wonderful! (not to mention feeling relatively swanky that I'm working out at the James Center) A few of the treadmills look out a window that overlooks south side...I love that view! The locker rooms are super clean and they have a TRX studio, classes, lots and lots of goodies! I HIGHLY recommend this YMCA as a destination for your workout...yes, destination. It's really REALLY great.

Parking fee in the parking deck is waived when you request a sticker from the YMCA desk. Extremely convenient for those working in the area or even if you want to workout before happy hour in Shockoe Slip. Like the other Reviews state, this location is indeed smaller than other Richmond branches. Smaller rooms, less equipment, and even smaller class offerings. The ceilings feel a bit low and confined, compared to that of other locations. The wooden floors in the group exercise room are noticeably bouncy. I'm not sure if this is intentional. Staff is extremely friendly, informative, and professional. Good customer service seems to be a priority. The main drawback is that, unless you've already researched this place online, it's impossible to find. I have driven past this location regularly for years without knowing of its existence. Fortunately, the staff from other businesses inside the James Center building seem to be familiar with the fact that YMCA members are NOT familiar with this branch.

There are some opportunities for improvement…read morethough: (1) There is only one rowing machine. 1 out of every 2 times I want to use it, I either have to wait on someone else or someone else has to wait on me. I've requested another rowing machine on their periodic email survey multiple times, to no avail. I wouldn't be surprised if the one rower disappears one day due to the gradual takeover of CrossFit equipment. (2) There's very little open space thanks to a gradual but steady takeover of CrossFit equipment. You have to weave around people and weights, which is a hazard, just to get to the cardio area. (3) They don't seem to do much upkeep of the treadmills. The very same treadmills have been off (e.g., too loud of a sound when you run on it, indicating parts need replacing) for years. It makes me wonder if they've replace any of the belts or done other standard maintenance that is important for ensuring the machines stay lower impact & true to the speed indicated on the screen. (4) I've never seen staff cleaning the machines. I used to work at another gym and it's good practice to have staff clean a few types of machines each hour on a rotating basis. This is particularly important since many patrons don't clean after themselves, and patrons don't (nor should) clean parts of the machine they don't personally touch like the base.

Come to find out, members have to have a parking sticker on their car or else they'll be towed. They don't communicate this effectively AT ALL other than a piece of paper at the front desk that has small text stating you may be towed if you don't have a parking sticker (in a long paragraph) and they expect people to come in and immediately read it and ask for a sticker? I'm not from the area and because of them not being more communicative about it, I have to pay $195. The female manager who I spoke to after gave a terrible attitude and said it's not her responsibility that I didn't pay attention to the sheet and that's the best they can do to communicate it. BS! You should know out of state members would have no clue and when we first arrived and said it was our first time there, you should immediately mention the parking sticker! Just terrible management here and communication. The gym also is not very appealing when inside and has a weird layout. Definitely not coming back to this location smh

This is located within the student center of VCU's MCV campus. As a recent alum (and now member of the Alumni Association) I have access to both this gym and the Cary Street, all for $26/mo and no contract. It's a great deal IMO. As a runner converted to triathlete, I joined this gym for two main reasons: great pool and shower facilities by work. I often run on my lunch break, so I needed somewhere to shower during warmer weather. So far, so good. I do more than just swim and shower now too! Things I really like: *6 lane pool that is 25 meters and DOESN'T GET TAKEN up by kid's teams. YAAAY. VCU has a separate pool for its varsity teams. *Pool temp is cooler than others I've used *2 separate locker rooms- smaller for pool, huge for main gym *Keiser bikes. This is my favorite type of stationary bike for training. *Lockers that come with manual code-entry locks- no need to bring your own lock *Private and spacious showers *Doesn't seem to get overly crowded at peak times like conventional gyms Things I Don't Like: *Gym is fairly warm with bad ventilation (I'm a sweater as it is) *Non-student members use ID to enter and attendant has to manually look up. A little inconvenient. *Flimsy chairs in locker rooms. Would be nice to have bolted benches like normal locker rooms. *I'm also a member at Scott's Addition and find weight machines modern and nicer

The workout area is spacious and modern. The fitness area has a wide variety of cardio machines for students/customers. There's a stretching room with mats, yoga balls, and ab coasters to work on your core. There's a nice size pool and heated spa inside the center. The basketball courts are modern. On Saturdays, I occasionally play pickup basketball here with friends. There are racquetball and squash courts as well. The locker room area was remodeled. You can safely store your items while you workout. The staff is friendly. I give MCV Campus Recreation and Aquatic Center a 4.5 rating.
