Bizarrely unprofessional. I just hung up on a women in accounts receivable who was trying her best to gas light me regarding a CA preliminary notice of a Lien. I asked her simple & direct questions, which she dodged with blatant avoidance. She could not tell me what was purchased. If she worked for me, I would have her terminated pronto. No customer service oriented business would allow their customers to be exposed to a Cobra. The notice was dated 3/11 and postmarked 5/4, outside of the allowed 20 day window. Any contractor who performs work on any of my properties will be instructed NOT to do business with Golden State Lumber, they are blood suckers. After speaking with the contractor he informed me Golden State was paid in full on March 27th. Eye roll. read more

We originally thought there might be a leak in the window, and he helped us debug to figure out where the leak might be actually coming from. I am extremely disappointed with my experience with Golden State Lumber San Rafael, specifically in dealing with Frank, due to a complete lack of accountability on a very expensive and code-critical item. We ordered a $15,000 custom door specified at 3'-0" x 8'-2". What was delivered resulted in a 2'-6¼" clear opening, which does not meet egress requirements. While the height was correct, the width was not. When this discrepancy was raised, the explanation given was that "clear opening" was interpreted differently. That is unacceptable. Golden State Lumber Santa Rosa has historically been careful to flag any door or window that does not meet code. That safeguard failed entirely here. What is most concerning is not just the mistake, but the lack of warning, verification, or responsibility afterward. Selling a door at this price point that does not meet code--without clearly flagging the issue or offering a resolution--is not professional and puts the client and design team in a very difficult position. Mistakes can happen. What matters is how they are handled. In this case, accountability was missing, and that is why I cannot recommend working with Frank at Golden State Lumber. read more

I purchased two custom doors for my home. An entry door and a bedroom door. Not only did the doors come a whole week after the estimated timeline, but they were not customized to the dimensions I spoke about with my salesperson multiple times. When I called the sales associate, her solution was to have Golden State come pick the doors up, drive them to the door manufacturer, and have them shave a couple inches off the bottom... meaning they're not custom. I paid a significant amount more for these doors to be custom cut properly, so this was a real downgrade. The sales associate offered me no discount on the non-custom job they were going to do. I was not fond of this solution, so I told her to take the doors back and get me new ones done right. Overall, this entire process is going to cost me 5-6 weeks for what was originally an 11-day lead time. My advice to the average homeowner shopping here for doors is to look elsewhere. Marin lumber is a great alternative. They're local, similar in price, and specialize in just doors. The only reason I went to Golden State was their faster lead time, which obviously didn't pan out to be faster at all. Also, I share the sentiment many people on here have regarding the lack of support from some of Golden State Lumber's staff. They were very helpful with my order right up until they received my money. After that there were multiple times members of their team didn't call me back after saying they would do so, they had little patients dealing with my questions, and they never notified me that my order was in the store when it had arrived. I have ordered about 12 Marvin windows from them one of the bigger windows has a sill track problem and one of the technicians came and find out about that problem and he promise me and my contractor that he will send a new hole sill track to me. Guess what I received, I just received half of the sill track which is only 45 inches. They are new windows, not second hand this one is almost 2k. Really I only can say WTF! We are renovating our house with Hardie Board. We ordered pre-painted board from Golden State and when it arrived it was chipped and damaged and it appeared to be primed not painted. It was dirty and appeared scratched up. We asked for our money back but they said they wouldn't accept a return on it. They offered to sell us some touch-up paint. Nightmarish. The $50k in materials I was going to buy from them for the reno will now go elsewhere. read more

This place has an amazing array of lumber and building supplies but very uneven customer service. I placed a special order through Gary and he said he would call me back when it was in. No call back so I ring them up and the guy on the phone can't locate my order with my phone number and basically berates me for not having my order number. He finally finds it and says it's there. Okay, great. I ask for the order number and he says just tell them Gary knows where it is when you get here. Alrighty. I arrive the next day and go to the order desk. A very gruff, large fellow is slamming an energy drink. He seems perturbed to be taken away from his beverage. Again, he can't find my order with my telephone number but I let them know that Gary should know where it is. He eventually finds it. He then hands me several pieces of paper and says the item is in the will call area outside. I go outside to a huge lumber yard and try to find my item among hundreds of pieces of lumber and accessories - a needle in haystack scenario. Finally, a nice young guy comes to help me out. It takes awhile to find it but he eventually does and helps me load it into my car. read more

My husband and I came in here to look for an exterior front door. Maybe if I'd got out my work boots and tool belt I would have had a better reception - who knows? Not one single person made eye contact in the showroom, let alone asked if they could help with anything. Two girls sitting at what looked like a reception area didn't even look our way, carried on chatting about whatever. I realize that having an appointment would possibly be the better way to go but having about half a dozen employees at least completely ignore potential customers or not even take the time to give them the most minimal of information was pretty shoddy. Very bad vibe from this place. Drove 5 minutes away to Golden State Lumber where we came away with 2 catalogs to browse and a good bit of information to get us started with this project. Just so you know, I generally have a pretty good experience with golden state. The window and door people are great, many of the people who actually load up the lumber are great, the people who work in the hardware desk - in the back, are very helpful and considerate. But every once in a while I run into a creep , with attitude. Today I had to return some non-shrink grout , so took my receipt in and asked a fellow at front desk what I needed to do with the product I was returning . It was on a cart so he said just leave it there at entrance and do whatever other shopping I needed. I loaded up my lumber, and foolishly went back to the front desk and spoke to a woman at the checkout , and went through my order. I told her I wanted to purchase some lumber and other items and needed to return my non shrink grout. I even pointed over to where it was . She replied that I first had to take my returning item and take it back outside to the exit shack and have them sigh me in or give me a receipt for it, then I could come back in and do my transaction. I replied incredulously really? I need to take it back outside to have it checked in? Yes she replied , but this time with a little attitude. I made my purchase without the return, thinking I would do it another day, but on the way out ran into a fellow from the 'hardware' desk, who I had done business with, and he said, no sweat he could do It in the back. He then took care of it. I also asked him to explain this to the woman at the front desk. Ridiculous, not only was she mistaken but had to add a little attitude for flavor. Not good. read more

This place is the best. JIMMY was amazing and helpful. I called ahead and asked about the material that I needed. And asked for reassurances after Jimmy said they did have it in stock. I was nervous because the other lumber place in town told me the same thing but when I got there they realize they were mistaken. Not that way with Golden State! They are on top of things and they know what they are doing. GSL has been great during our new deck(s) remodeling process. Will has been an absolute pro in handling all of my requests and orders. He responds to text and email at all times of the day, even when he's out of the office. We've received multiple deliveries and each driver has been extremely courteous, even when our a-hole neighbor yells at him for being in the way (give us five minutes bro!). Same day delivery if you order early enough! I can't recommend Will and GSL enough. read more

Awful customer service. We purchased from them a little over a year ago and had one pane of a french door shatter. Milgard website says to go to dealer first for warranty issues so we did. I was connected to Lisa who was so rude and spoke to me like everything I said was wrong. She told me the sales person on their own invoice didn't exist (perhaps doesn't work there anymore? many possibilities but was treated like I was an idiot), she couldn't find the invoice after I gave her the invoice number and confirmed we bought from their location. I sent over a copy of the invoice and never heard from them ever again. I called and left messages and emailed and no one ever got back to me. I called our local Sonoma Door & Sash and within 5 minutes their rep kindly told me where to find the number they needed on the frame of our door and opened a case with Milgard for us even though we didn't purchase from them. We will be using them for ALL future projects. read more

Was unfortunately in the middle of home construction when COVID-19 hit. As a result, my last construction invoice was paid late. I had questions on the bill and the construction company shut down for a little bit and then re-opened partially staffed. It took a few weeks for us to connect and address all of the questions so I can pay the last bill. Part of what was on the last invoice was lumber fees with the wood obtained from Golden State. GS take aggressive collection to a new level in my direct experience. They attempted to send me a registered letter during shelter in place when the contractor was 20 days late paying them. Luckily I was on a zoom meeting and missed the mail delivery person. Side note- Bless those folks for delivering mail during this time. I called Golden State to find out what was the matter. They explained that the contractor was 20 days late and they were coming to me because of that. I explained to the billing rep I spoke to that the construction company was reopened and they were partially staffed but have been getting back to me. The woman I spoke to was stupid enough to ask if I was going to go to the post office to pick up the letter. Of course this is a violation of our shelter in place order as it's not an essential activity. The contractor explained that GS uses his tactics to get homeowners upset so the contractors hurry up and pay. He told me that although the notice lists name and home address, that I can ignore them. They go to great lengths to make these appears as debt collections in an attempt to get their money. Apparently, they also try to come collect unused wood? Luckily there is none here. Shame on GS for continuing to do this during the pandemic. This approach puts mail carriers and homeowners in situations where they can be exposed. I was told by the building rep that this was their corporate policy. Clearly they should rethink this if they care about public safety Update- I hope GS reconsiders how they use the US certified mail service in their collection practices in light of COVID. It's unsafe for both mail carriers as well as homeowners as it forces up close contact. read more

A disastrous visit and a complete waste of time. I called ahead and asked the counter person if they had a certain concrete product and was told that they did. I made my way there and ordered 5 bags. Then decided to change the order to six bags. I also bought a roll of masking tape. Once paid for, I went out to the yard and had to carefully avoid the many forklifts that were busy loading trucks to get to the rear corner of the building. The person inside the door was not interested in helping me but more interested in talking on his cell phone about what he was going to eat for dinner or whatever personal business he was doing. Finally a forklift driver outside offered to help me. He could not locate the product I was looking for and actually drove across the yard to a different location. In the end. The forklift driver found one broken bag inside the doorway were the first person was still on his phone. The forklift driver did apologize to me that they didn't have what I came there to buy. After wasting almost 30 minutes in the yard trying to get some help and then find something that wasn't there I had to go back in the office wait in line again to get a refund. I asked them didn't they have a computerized inventory of what was in stock and didn't really get a definitive answer. I also noticed I had been charged for six rolls of tape instead of the one that I had bought and had only been billed for five bags of concrete product . I deduced that the initial salesman changed the quantity of the tape to 6 instead of bags of concrete when I changed my order from 5 to 6 bags . The woman who processed my refund seemed annoyed that she had to do it. A huge waste of time while my handyman was on the clock and waiting for me to get back with what he needed. I will never patronize this business again. read more

One of the most delightful experiences I've had with a company. Had a delivery scheduled and was surprised not only that it was on time but Paul who showed up was amazing. He knocked on our door and then made a big deal over our puppies. They loved him and they never love on any driver. Paul listened to me on where I wanted the delivery made and was even so nice to adjust when I realized I wanted it somewhere else. He spent extra time giving me advice on my project and over all was an amazing representative of Golden State lumber. I am sorry for those people who didn't feel that they received good service but personally the guys who work in lumbar have all been absolutely wonderful and so helpful. I recently had a fence installed, Redwood S3 and S4 was recommended and the fence looks beautiful. Now my next project is around the corner and I am positive that work will come out just as beautiful. BTW If you are really picky about your lumbar go and pick the wood out yourself because most contractors are not paid to care. They merely pick up whatever wood the lumbar store gives them, then on the job they use what they have and if the wood is damaged, contractors either don't notice, don't care, or hope you won't notice. After all, they are not working on "their property." I have been busy filling screw holes and sanding rough spots and although I was on hand when they did the job, I had to request that they change a few boards, change the wrong 4x4s, and made sure all the boards were aligned. Sure enough, in the lower right hand side of that photo, I didn't notice a board that should have never been included, as well as, a board in front. It is almost imperative that you pick your own wood and be there to "micro-manage" because if you are not -- good luck with that decision. Golden State has beautiful wood and when I do my balcony I will right there picking out my wood. read more

Went in to get three posts for a wall I'm building. The guy helping me at the front desk, (my receipt says "Donald Hays") was the rudest employee I've dealt with in years. Although I've spent thousands of dollars here, this guy treated me like garbage for absolutely no reason that I can figure out. He was patronizing- I repeated my name to him to find my acct on their system, and he sneered "I heard you the first time!" Then when he repeatedly asked me what I wanted, which as I wrote above was simple- he stopped, looked me straight in the eye and said "I can't do this- I have no idea what you're talking about." I came close to losing it and yelling that my thousands of dollars have helped pay his salary and would he kindly lose the attitude, but I held it together. I figure if I can warn others to go somewhere else and deprive this guy of a salary, that would be much more effective. But if you want to be treated like shit, go here. read more

I was headed to Golden State Lumber, as directed by my contractor, with a list of things needed to build a 10x12 addition. The police had the street shut down because of a gas leak in front of Golden State Lumber, so I look to my right and see San Rafael Lumber Company. I think what the heck, shoot in there to get a quote of materials, and am helped right away by a friendly employee. His name is Doug. By the time I left, the street was open, and I went the block down into Golden State Lumber. Headed to the cashier to show him my list and say I want to get a quote for the items. He sends me to the "sales department" and says that I should see 6-7 salesmen in on sales room floor and should approach one of them. Well, they aren't there on the showroom floor, but you can see them sitting at their desks, chatting with each other, laughing like schoolgirls while I am standing in front of the sales receptionist desk holding my list, looking like an idiot for about 5 minutes. The receptionist finally asks if I need some help, right as I am leaving. I state what I need, and she heads back to interrupt the gossip party comes back, and sends me to a salesman's desk whom I shall call Manbearpig. Manbearpig doesn't invite me to sit down or anything remotely friendly, and there is no "what can we help you with today." or even a simple "hello, my is Manbearpig," he just looks at me like I am out of place at a lumber store. I finally broke the awkward stare down between Manbearpig and myself when I said, "I need a quote for some materials" and hand him my list. Manbearpig looks it over almost annoyed and asks where is my email....okay Manbearpig, I didn't know a construction materials list needed to include an email. So he hands me back the list to write my email down, and I do. Manbearpig then says he is going to need at least an hour to get a quote together and he will email it to me. (Luckily it was a copy of the list because he kept it without even offering to photocopy) In my head I was thinking "Manbearpig, Doug at San Rafael Lumber got that quote together for me in less than 5 minutes, and you were just sitting around gossiping so I know you are not busy." but instead just said "Okay, thanks" I left feeling like I inconvenienced the whole building and made up my mind that I was using San Rafael Lumber, even if their quote was much less. I'll never know what the price would have been with Golden State Lumber because Manbearpig never even emailed me the pricing. San Rafael Lumber has earned my respect and my $1,500.00 dollars. We have massive projects coming up, and Golden State will never get my business. Doom on you Manbearpig. read more

This place is a conundrum. For a contractor who knows exactly what they want, it's probably great: the prices are good to excellent, and most common building materials are available in quantity. Rebar, joist hangers, plywood, molding, and some tools and supplies. BUT, if you are not precisely sure of what you need, Golden State can be a nightmare. Even if you've done a good bit of construction, it can be difficult to find what you need. The staff are minimal and not very helpful, and lots of items are unlabeled or poorly labeled. Not only that, they are snide about people who come in with questions. Here are some representative stories. (At this point you should know that I've built a house, I've got a construction truck, and I'm not stupid. But I'm not a general contractor, either.) I recently needed a bunch of #4 rebar (1/2" diameter), and the trip was just aggravating. First of all, it took me 10 minutes to find the damn stuff in their yard. Then I was faced with a completely unlabeled set of piles. After loading up the pieces in front (measuring with my tape to make sure it was #4) I waited 10 minutes inside to get checked out. THEN I find out when leaving the yard that I had gotten the 60-grade rebar, but been checked out for 40-grade (how many people know that 60-grade rebar has a white paint spot on the end? I just took the rebar in front!) So another checkout experience, pay another $9, and I'm out of there with my rebar. As I walked back in, one salesperson said to another: "I knew he'd be back!") But I won't go back, unless I need a lot of something, know EXACTLY what I want, and know that it will be labeled. Another time I picked up a load of cedar siding. The piles are disorganized, the material is mostly crap, warped and full of knots and checks. It took an hour to find enough decent pieces to do a small job. Even the contractors have problems. While I'm waiting, a guy comes in to return a bunch of joist hangers, because the box he picked up had two kinds mixed together. No help loading stuff, by the way. Good luck finding anyone in the yard to give you a hand. I contrast this with Jackson's Hardware, right down the street, or Fairfax Lumber, near my home. Jackson's and Fairfax also cater to contractors. However, their staff is VERY helpful, and it's easy to find someone to give you a hand. To me, it's worth the extra few percent I might pay to do business with a place that actually wants my business. read more

Worst customer service ever, when ordering products, call three times to get finally get ahold of the Mike with no return phone calls, to find out they actually placed the order. Then scheduled delivery for a Friday, no delivery showed up Friday no phone call, I called twice on Monday no phone calls back, how to physically go down there and ask where our order was... You didn't say sorry didn't get any excuse why he's such a crappy at Golden State lumber. We'll see if it actually shows up on Tuesday like he says. read more

We ordered some really expensive sliders that were wrong and scratched and since flagging it a week ago, it has not been resolved. The whole process has been really bad with lack of communication, incompetent sales people and ongoing disconnects. Here is an overview of the events: -At the end of May, we met Nick Mercurio from the window department in the showroom and decided on the LaCantina sliders: we liked them because the show room ones had bi-directional tracks and felt high quality -We wanted to order the exact same ones in white -Nick went out for leave -When he came back he asked us to specify the dimensions and the direction of the sliders: a 2 and 3 panel one. I was a bit confused about the direction and assumed it was for the inside panel so provided the interior direction movements for the panel on the inside track. -We also asked Nick to clarify if they work with a 2X4 wall - he said "yes, just adjust the trim". We are now finding that the wall needs to be 2X8 so I am having to spend more to adjust the wall and the threshold its resting on with extra concrete and framing -Once the order was in, we were told it would only take 4 weeks so I booked my contractor for that timeframe -Then Nick confirmed a week later that it was going to be 8 weeks. I now had to scramble to line up the contractor as they are very busy right now -When the sliders finally arrived, they had scratches on the panels and the frame - we immediately flagged it and they took note of it -Lacantina was alerted but came out without any warning and cleaned over the scratches but they are still visible -Next, someone from LaCantina gave a me a call (Neomi?) to check on what I wanted to do: I called back several times on her cell phone and the office phone and never got a response back: a week as of this writing has passed -The frames are in, the sliders have scratches, are not bi-directional as we indicated and we are not sure what to do. -While I believe there are issues between Golden state and Lacantina the whole process is poorly managed by Golden State and we are extremely dissatisfied but hopeful that there is still a positive outcome. read more

I'm not a contractor. I'm not even a DIYer. I'm just a Marin stay-at-home mom. Waddling around pregnant, too, if you want to picture the whole stereotype. I have had two experiences with Golden State Lumber in the past couple of weeks. The first was purchasing interior doors for bedrooms and a couple of closets. The order was tiny, didn't warrant much attention, and yet I was treated superbly (this time by Tristan). The second time, I was looking for wood, first for decking, then for a fence. I knew generally what I wanted, but not exactly. And Rich walked around the showroom and lumber yard patiently with me explaining the differences between the types of wood, the sizes, the prices. I was able to place my order and to get it delivered the next day (for $15!) by the nicest delivery guy ever. Who knows when I'll need to buy lumber again. But this amateur will go to Golden State Lumber every time. read more
