TLDR: CTD has everything for a complex bathroom build and Ryan + his warehouse staff are terrific to work with. If you're remodeling CTD is THE place to supply you in central Marin. We're almost finished rebuilding 2.5 bathrooms from studs to sloped, curbless showers on heated tile floors. It's awesome when you can go somewhere and they have everything to get the job done at a high level. Our general contractor relies on them for the latest in bathroom building technology (i.e. the waterproof materials used in modern bathrooms) and I get it now having shopped all over Marin for supplies - this is the place to go. Sometimes staff at specialty trade stores can be difficult to deal with for homeowners, but I always had a positive experience at CTD. Ryan in the warehouse is beyond amazing. I was in the middle of a tile crises due to another vendor sending the wrong tile and a contractor that was waiting. What a wonderful showroom, with so many tile options! I recently worked with CTD on a remodel project for my kitchen. Being my first remodeling project at my home, I had a ton of questions and wasn't totally sure what I wanted. The woman I had my appointment with was incredibly helpful and patient with my indecisiveness. She helped me through the entire process and had some great design ideas that I incorporated as well. The San Rafael showroom has many great installation examples, and tiles including slabs to peruse for my next project. I visited the showroom inspired by a slab that I saw online, and called ahead to meet with Raissa. It turned out to be porous and not practical for a shower installation so I asked Raissa for her recommendations based on a wall paper design. And she consulted me with a variety of choices that were practical and complimentary including identifying those that were in stock at their other store so I could get the pieces within a few days to meet our timeline. Even though our order wasn't large, she provide excellent customer service and expertise and I look forward to working with Raissa again when we do a larger project. Another bonus is that the showroom was located in Marin and I didn't have to travel to San Francisco for this project. I have been shopping at Ceramic Tile Design (CTD) in San Rafael for several years. As a designer, it is my go-to vendor for any kitchen or bathroom design project that I begin. Since I specialize in these remodels, I need a place that has a vast supply of tile from which to choose. I also need to work with knowledgeable, experienced and creative salespeople. CTD fits the bill in this regard and offers the most beautiful tile in the Bay Area. In addition, I love working with Lauriel because we feed off each other and have the best professional working relationship. If I send my clients in there without me, on occasion, I always know that Lauriel will take great care of them! The last several projects of mine have turned out just as I envisioned and I am very proud of what we installed in each client's home. I am also super excited to know CTD is now offering beautiful slabs of stone: marble and quartzite as well as a great collection of quartz from different brands. It was so inspiring to walk among the slabs in their warehouse as well as outside. They are displayed for easy viewing. Products are much higher quality than whatever 'big box' or discount store around. I got my bathroom tile from CTD and I love it! I was able to get some really unique tiles for my shower walls and niche that I couldn't find at any of the other tile stores around the Sonoma/Marin area. The service I received was awesome! I got responses to my emails same day and had a small issue with the shipping that was fixed immediately. The employees are helpful and make shopping for tile a fun experience. There's a neat little water feature in the showroom too that I thought was pretty cool. I would definitely call ahead for an appointment though, if you need to work with a salesperson, they were pretty busy the couple times I was in there. All in all, I would shop here again. read more

I can't say enough good things about this local specialty store we are fortunate to have in San Rafael! The showroom of course is gorgeous - but I've only used the warehouse for professional supplies and advice myself. Today was a good example - I have a vintage 1958 Eichler home and often find myself in DIY projects - the warehouse with professional supplies - is THE place to call and go get what you need if you have ceramic, stone, tile, etc projects. After a faucet replacement, I found a old stain left on an old faux marble sinktop, I called and got a recommendation for a product to use, and they offered me a free sample to try first. And if that doesn't work, they'll tell me the next steps to take! Earlier this year, I had to do a DIY repair on a vintage ceramic tile bath/shower surround, remove and replace the grout myself - they set me up with perfect samples to match a tricky grout color, all the supplies I needed and the best ever sealer with amazing applicator wheel to use - the products, pro tips, personal advice and instructions are top notch - manager Ryan and the whole team in the warehouse are THE BEST! I would have to second the reviewers who had the experience of this place being incredibly snobby and not that helpful. I had an appointment and the design consultant I worked with seemed like I was inconveniencing them. When I tried to get pricing for the countertop I wanted, they were so cavalier about it, as if I had an unlimited budget. They gave me a vague estimate and didn't even really look at my design plan to quote the project. Once they realized I cared about how much money I was spending, it felt like I was shooed out of the store like I was a nuisance. BTW, my contractor suggested I go to Granite Expo in Emeryville which had many of the same products for 30-40% less. read more

This place is absolutely awful. I would not recommend using them at all. The first time we went we wanted to grab a sample and we're told we had to make an appointment. We then made an appointment. When we came back for our appointment, a couple was standing in front of us and was being assisted with getting a sample. We sat down and waited for our appointment at the table, which had a small sign with the employees name who was helping us on it, and our time for our appointment. We waited for 10 minutes before I heard a woman go up to the couple that was waiting by the door and ask if they were me. The woman by the door said no I believe it's that woman at the table. I over heard her, I motioned and said, "I'm Christina." I was ignored, and then my husband also said that's us. We were 100% discriminated at against based on our age or another factor. The woman "helping" is was rude, snobby, and not even interested in getting us a sample. We left. We bought tile from another place, and I'm happy we didn't waste more time or our hard earned money here. read more

Ridiculously terrible service. I have ordered tile from them in the past - Lauriel was helpful at that time. This time, when I came in, the young woman at the desk waved her arm vaguely toward the back of the store when I asked her where I should look for floor tile. I looked around for a while, then asked her if someone could help me. Quite a while later, a middle-aged man ambled out of the back office more or less in my direction. I was the only customer in the store. He didn't identify himself or offer to help me. Finally I asked him if he could help me. He deigned to say yes. His attitude throughout our interaction was condescending, rather as though I were not worthy of being there. He was not at all helpful. (I have remodeled 2 kitchens and 8 bathrooms over time, so I have dealt with a lot of tile suppliers.). Finally he mentioned, off- handedly, that many of the tile samples were incorporated in the flooring of the store. (He should have conveyed that information nearer to the beginning.) Then he walked away without saying anything. What a contrast to The Tile Shop in Berkeley, where I went next! The person who helped me there went all around the store with me - he noted subtle variations of color and pattern in the tiles and gave excellent advice. I rarely write negative reviews and enjoy giving positive feedback. A few years back I went to CTD based on yelp reviews and had a wonderful experience with my kitchen flooring. Fast-forward 2 years and things have drastically changed. If your looking for a great price and/or great customer service- you wont find it here. In short- the customer service is hit or miss. The owner also seems to hold that cohesive theme with his responses to the reviews here on yelp. I would say use CTD as a showroom to get ideas and check websites and other places for the actual purchases. read more

The only reason I am giving this place two stars is the great collection of material they have in their showroom. It really is quite a nice showroom. Where did the other stars go? Lack of service lack of service and lack of service. We went in and signed the log. "Take a look around and a sales representative will be right with you." Oh great...the in person version of being put on hold." We looked about and found what we wanted. Still on hold. A woman walked up to us and asked if we were being helped and we said no. She apologized that she could not help us because she was only in accounting. Still on hold. Three women were sitting behind the front counter. Apparently none of them could help is either. Still on hold. The ONLY other customer was with what must have been the only sales person. If not why could nobody help us. Still on hold. Like many other reviews- we also found the customer service was poor; they were extremely snobbish and downright rude! I called a few days prior to our visit and asked if we needed an appointment. "Nope, just come on in"...right... There was no sign in sheet when we visited, nor did anyone point us towards one. We asked several people for help and got brushed off each time. One women at a desk reluctantly volunteered (after we stood at another lady's desk while she completely ignored us). All we wanted was a price and the ETA. After she looked up the price, she literally got up and walked away. Perhaps because we were only asking about that one tile, she thought we were not a large enough order to warrant her time. However, little did she know that it was going to be the "star" detail tile that the rest of the bathroom tile work was to be designed around. As they SHOULD know, design is a process, which often starts with a single point of inspiration, and to which an entire room can result. What a shame for her, as we liked that tile and we were JUST about to order it before she walked away. Needless to say, we found the tile somewhere else, and ordered a few thousand dollars worth of tiles from that other business. In hindsight, their poor service and the attitude we encountered actually did us a favor. Not only did the "other" business discount the tile 10%, but we found a better selection of tiles. Ceramic Tile Design missed out on a few thousands of dollars in business, as we were shopping for a complete bathroom remodel. We will not be returning for our next remodel either (the kitchen) another loss of thousands of dollars! They also lost our business with regards to the tools and supplies as well. We bought the thin set, grout, densshield, ditra, and all other tools at that other tile showroom, where they were engaged in their jobs, and eagerly shared ideas and feedback; all of which improved the final result- we now have a beautiful master bathroom with ZERO products bought at Ceramic Tile Design. Made appointments to select tile, then grout and other items. Selection was great; lots to choose from without being overwhelmed. We had guidance from Sheldon for the glass tiles we used for a new fireplace surround and a compatible ceramic tile for the hearth. The only downside is that we were never notified when our tiles came in; after calling, we found out that half our order was in San Rafael and half the order was in San Francisco. After lots of calls and much confusion, we finally were able to get all our material in one location for us to pick up. Never received an apology for this mix-up, which would have been good customer relations. On the positive side, our fireplace looks awesome now! read more
