This place has been around forever. My most recent visit was nothing to write home about. The burger was great. BLT not so much. Poutine was good. Very heavy on the gravy. The staff got took orders quickly, and food was ready very quickly too. We dined in. The decor is very retro feeling. The restaurant needs some better ventilation. I ordered an "All star combo" You get a fresh flavourful homemade burger And Let me separate the word "flavourful " YES. It is full of flavour. You also get a side of fries and a soft drink. All for $16.55 plus tax. Let me tell you it is well worth the price. And The fries are house cut and ridiculously good. Honestly the fries might have been better than the burger. Been here twice now. Their advertising is basically the heavenly smell of charcoal grilled meat as you pass by the restaurant. For slightly under $20 you can get a 2x6oz charcoal grilled burger with a fried egg on top and chipotle mayo on the side as a dip for the meat. I would be cracking the yolk and let it drizzle over the meat to cook it a little when it is hot. Perfect for the anti-vegan. Though I did cheat a bit by adding some sautéed mushroom and a mocha capuchins milkshake to share with my son. Which ends up being $25. Line up can get long but moves quickly. The parking lot is limited so you can always park at the mall across the street if you are desperate for a proper burger. If I am soloing I may replace the mushroom with bacon or add a slice of mozzarella. It may not be money worth but I would be willing to spend a bit to support this local business. I'm not allowed to dress my burger how I want it, and have to tell the cashier how I want it. I'm very specific with how I like my burger dressed and for 41 years this was never an issue. no matter how much I say at the cash the specifics, it inevitably gets screwed up. There's no point anymore. To constantly eat a soggy burger with the wrong condiments and wrong amounts because B at the cash can't listen properly and relay the information. Staff was very friendly, took my order right away and by the time I got to the first paragraph my order was ready. Ordered a burger with bacon and the usual toppings, fries, gravy because why not and a root beer. Food smells amazing, a quick hand full of fries from the bag didn't disappoint. Thick cut, nice and crispy but they could learn a thing or two from five guys and throw some extra in the bag. The gravy is thick and flavoured but was too much for the small amount of fries. The bottom bun was a bit soggy by the time I got home to eat my tasty burger which was disappointing because I only live 10 minutes away from this spot. It was however very well seasoned and hit the greasy spoon itch I was trying to g to scratch. We drove by this place down Yonge Street for the past 15 years and one day we finally decided to give it a shot. First impression- Did I time travelled back to the 60s? Everything has the retro diner feel still, from the printed label menu to the bench seats. Tried out their All-Star burger w/ onion rings, as well as steak Kaiser. Juicy and non frozen patty. Patty had the umami flavour from the beef. But not as charred and it would have brought out the flavour a little more. We both ordered the 6oz All Star burger (N ordered with barbeque sauce and pickles). The 6oz is more than enough for you small bellies out there. The 12oz is only for the unga bunga dothraki warriors. The burger was kissed by Spongebob himself, the real fry cook. It was hardy, but it was not greasy, it did not leave us reaching for the jug of water and it was full of flavour. It's hard to find a burger this good, at this price and at this portion. The bbq sauce was top-notch, would recommend . The apple turnover was not too sweet, which is the way we like it. Definately up there with the McDonald's apple pie. It was super crunchy, without a soggy interior and it was clear the sweetness was the natural sweetness of the apples. The strawberry shake was your standard strawberry shake with all its creamy, refreshing, goodness one needs to hit the spot. The best way to sum up our eating experience is with the following poem we wrote: First sip of the strawberry shake: "that's a nut". First bite of the burger: "that's a nut." I was expecting a stellar charcoal grilled burger as per past reviews but instead I got a burger bordering on bland. Most of the flavor came from the tomato I had on there. Also, everything that was on that burger (bun, patty, cheese, tomato, lettuce, pickels) was soft so no other texture. I paid $16 for an order of burger and fries. What I can say is the fries were fresh and they gave us a lot of it. The servers were very nice. Only the guy working the cash register wore a mask. I can imagine how hot it would be for the cook to wear a mask but maybe the guy handling the condiments/cold items should wear a mask as well? If you are hungry, the poutine and burger combo with drink can run you for 19 dollars. I had the regular hamburger, they mentioned it'll be kiddy sized but I felt like it was a good amount. Mostly just a snack for 7 dollars. The toppings are fresh, pickles have nice crunch and the burger is very nicely broiled. You can definately taste the char. Options; all the options reminded me of those old school burger joints. Fries, onion rings, charred burgers etc I ordered a 6oz burger with the usual burger toppings. The burgers came in those red baskets and I quickly took a big bite. The bun was soft, all the toppings were good, the meat was not bad. I've driven past this burger joint for years now and have always wanted to give it a try as it gave off a strong retro classic burger vibe. I came for takeout as dine in was not possible due to the lock down. I ordered the all star classic 6oz burger with onion rings and a mocha milk shake. It added up to be 18$ and it was not in a combo form. I ordered takeout and unfortunately they had given me fries instead of onion rings but by the time I had found out I was already home. Honestly though the fires were delicious. In comparison they reminded me of swiss chalet fries but crispier. The burger was delicious and got everything right! It tasted like burgers straight from a barbecue. The only complaint if I were to have any was that the milkshake was very underwhelming. I think it comes straight from a machine as the staff made it very quickly. But for 3$ it was pretty good. I would definitely recommend this spot and you will definitely see me there. It was made quick and I cannot stress enough how absolutely lively and friendly the cashiers and cooks are. It has a retro look as it has been standing 60+ years! When the food was ready it was just a perfect burger that mama would make. Homemade, whole ingredients, for the same price as fast food places like McDonald's or A&W. I also ordered onion rings which are interchangeable with the fries for no extra charge. they were crisp and flavourful. I would recommend trying the milkshake as it pairs wonderfully. We didn't end up eating until about 45 minutes after we picked up the food - the fries were kind of soggy but that's to be expected considering how long they'd been sitting in takeout bag - the burger and steak sandwich both travelled extremely well. I was told that if you live in the North York area, you should try Golden Star. We got the Homemade, grilled chicken, and fish. Don't get the chicken and fish. The fish was over fried and the chicken is not worth the price. The Homemade was okay, but I probably wouldn't go back for the burger. The fries and onion rings were good though. This restaurant received a lot of hype from my coworkers so I figured I'd give it a go. The decor is similar to that of an old diner and more like something you'd see closer to cottage country than in Toronto. That being said, there is plenty of seating both indoors and on the patio. The service was quick, friendly and somewhat funny with just the right amount of cheek from the burger assembly guy. I ordered a burger combo and added cheese and bacon bringing my bill to $10.11 after tax. It's important to note that they only accept cash here, which kind of threw me because I hardly ever carry cash. They do have an ATM machine on site but let's face it, anyone that values the security of their debit card would NEVER use one of these! Thankfully, my (dear, sweet, kindhearted) friend spotted me a tenner so I wouldn't have to spend the afternoon washing dishes. We proceeded to the condiment aisle (which is quite similar to the set up at Harvey's) to have our burgers dressed and off we went. Now, as you may have seen from my previous reviews, I do suffer from the occassional burger craving. Unfortunately, this would not have satisfied that craving. The patty, although seasoned nicely, was very thin and somewhat reminiscent of the processed burgers I used to get in my high school cafeteria. I'm not saying it tasted bad, it didn't... but I didn't get the impression that it was a homemade burger. It wasn't thick and juicy like I've read in other reviews of this restaurant... messy, yes (make sure you have plenty of napkins!) but that was more from the condiments I selected. The fries, on the other hand, seemed to be hand cut and were cooked nicely. I can't say that I was overly impressed with my experience at Golden Star.
