I thought I had reviewed this place months ago! This place has been a staple in the area for decades. I remember going to this place for lunch when I was in elementary school. The smell and the atmosphere have resonated in my mind since then. For years, I avoided going but a certain comfort comes from knowing this place is there. The menu hasn't changed. It's what you would expect in an 80s/90s burger joint, updated to include current trends like poutine. It is the only place that has fountain juice which is another comfort. A large variety of bottle/cans of soda and juice as well. My daughter and I shared the grilled cheese which was cooked to my liking. The fries were perfectly salted and the fountain juice was just as I remember. Service was quick and friendly. They also have a steady stream of customers primarily locals. Friendly place, staff are there to serve your burger with toppings of your preference. The home burger (real meat) tasted a lot better than the smaller burger (which seemed to have a ton of filler in it - don't waste your money on this). We all shared the poutine - it's huge - a paper plate full. It's ok but this place I feel isn't the best burger and poutine we have tasted. I do know that a maple leafs player had frequented this place often that his jersey hangs in the restaurant. Small place with tight benches for seating. The Burger Shack Known to be known for the classic burger from the 70s, but if this is what its supposed to taste like, then thank god for me to be born in the 90s. I was curious from the many good reviews. Today was the day i had my fillings done at the dentist, so i was extra hungry. I ordered the homemade 6oz cheeseburger for $6.20, and upgraded to real cheddar for $1 extra. Also got their "thick cut fries" which are apparently a popular sell, they come unseasoned so youll have to do that yourself. Burger: lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, relish, hot banana peppers, caramelized onions, HP sauce (steak), ketchup, mayo. The burger was...large and flat. The buns werent toasted, and were very dry. I couldnt taste the "grill on the meat" or any distinct meat flavour from the homemade patty. The only thing that had flavour was the HP steak sauce which i tasted on the second half of the burger. The caramelized onions were very...raw like. I would have preferred them to be cooked down so theyd be flavourful and soft. The ketchup available at the seating booths were watered down! Beware of this. The fries were crunchy but had a weird pasty aftertaste in my mouth. It felt like i was eating flour dusted fries. Not particularly thick cut...as you can tell from the pictures. End note: Some foods make me go wow and drop my phone, but unfortunately Burger Shack's homemade burger and fries did not. If im eating a good burger, id be all in, both hands, eyes focused, mind focused on the yumminess. Here, I actually held half the burger in one hand and started texting my friend on the other. Also, if this is what it tastes like to a very very hungry person (i didnt eat for the whole day), then i cannot imagine how it would taste when i am regularly hungry. The burger was 7.20, and the fries was 3.90. I paid around 12.50$ after tax. Geeee. And this was meant to be a snack before i go to Kushi izakaya for their tapas and 3$ sapporo pints (after 9pm only). Now im regrettably full and wasted 12$. Should have just gone to A&W one block west. Then id be happy with their 5$ for two burger special. Need a burger recommendation thats not too greasy? I love this place, it's got the old school vibe I love. Onion rings = great. Fries = great. Burgers = great. Milkshakes = great. Poutine = great and my go to for this dish in the area. Like that they serve it in those reusable containers, so you can save leftovers easily. I like to eat at Burger Shack a lot in the summer when I can take my food over to Eglinton Park to eat it while sitting on the grass. Winter is tougher and I find myself not eating here as much because I don't burn enough calories to justify going. Make sure you bring cash to avoid ATM fees as they are cash only but do have an ATM if needed. read more

Tasty, simple food, meats are charbroiled, sides are standard and well prepared. You won't find gourmet or elevated fast food here, but this place definitely has mass appeal with its solid burgers and Greek dinners. I just discovered it a couple of months ago and so far I've enjoyed everything I've tried, always take out. The reason I give it three stars is that the person working the cash at lunch also dresses your sandwich when it comes out, does not wash their hands or wear gloves, and speaks loudly and moistly over your food to the regulars in the joint. The other option is frozen, as they explained to us. It is cooked for your order and you can point to whatever sauces and toppings you'd like. They also give you the option to choose from 3 different types of cheese as you place your order, which is nice. The taste of the meat is nice and grilled. The size is filling. We also got a side of fries and a chocolate milkshake which was really good. It seems like there are a lot of loyal customers and a lot of people going in and out to order. The poutine is a big serving size but I would definitely skip it. There were clumps of gravy, the cheese was not squeaky and melted, and the fries were a bit soggy. Wendy's has way better poutine. The store has a diner vibe so it's a little grungy but I didn't totally mind. The service was less than friendly. Overall, not worth a revisit. The burger and poutine came up to just under $20. Other than Holy Chuck, Grillies on Bayview and The Burger's Priest, I can't think of any other good place for quality burgers in the neighbourhood. In addition to hamburgers, they also serve souvlaki and other greek food.The restaurant decor is pretty run down and the service was gruff but efficient. The fries are standard stuff you get at a burger joint but the over-sized onion rings are very good. Again, it will clog your arteries if you have them on a regular basis. No re-invention of the burger or changing what a burger is supposed to be. They keep it simple. Charbroil a patty, top it with your usual accoutrement (tomatoes, pickles, ketchup, mayo, onion), add cheese and bacon of course, and enjoy. This place is on the same level as Johnny's. While it doesn't pack the same flavourful blast that a griddled crust would provide to a burger, there's a distinctive taste to charbroiled burgers that will always have you thinking back to your childhood, and it still tastes amazing. What makes Burger Shack better than places like Johnny's Hamburgers for example, (another late-night joint that is mysteriously more loved than its product deserves, similar to Pizza Pizza), is that Burger Shack has a hand patted 6-ounce homemade burger vs. Johnny's frozen pre-fabricated filler-patty, and fresh-cut fries and onion rings vs. JH's mediocre factory-produced junk from the freezer. Throw in a great location, and late-night hours, especially on the weekends, and you got a winner. Best in the city? No. But combined with The Real McCoy, Golden Star Burgers, and Dairy Freez, Burger Shack is a fine example of the "charcoal pit" style of neighborhood burger joint, and I'm glad it's still here! read more

The thing about an old-school burger joint like Burger Shack is, you simply cannot compare it to more modern places like Burger's Priest and Holy Chuck. The hamburgers at newer places like that are objectively better, plain and simple. And yet there's something irresistible about Burger Shack. Everything is suck in the past, from the decor to the furniture to the way they serve the food. And the food is good. On this particular visit, I ordered a 6 oz. hamburger with everything on it and boy did it hit the spot. It was a sloppy mess but it was delicious. And even with that assortment of toppings, I was still able to taste the irresistible grilled flavor on the patty. The cash-only thing continues to be annoying, though. read more

Seeing as it is Decemburger, and after reading my friend Dale M's review, I thought I had better check this place out. I come from the shwa. The land of basics. Where good unpretentious (and somewhat funny/odd) burger places run a plenty. So to impress me, this place was gonna have to be fantastic. It wasn't. I ordered a milkshake that I could have made at home - and better - with beating a piece of bakers chocolate against the floor and pouring some milk over it. The fries however were great! Really liked the fries. The burger - wtf. When I ordered, there were 2 options for burger patties. When I inquired, one was fresh and one was frozen. Really?! Who opts for the frozen one?! The topping bowls are just like the shwa. When I knew I may be in trouble, is when the man who topped my burger was polite. That is never a good sign. I swear the burger had filler in it. And not fill-er-up good, but filler of an unknown variety. It had a bit of a sage-y taste. Not too sure what it was. It was also cooked to a hockey puck consistency. Again, not good. This is a great place to go if you want a fresh-never-frozen 6 oz. homemade burger. They make their own barbecue sauce as well, and offer hot sauce. Definitely go for the FRESH one, don't get the frozen one. They have an extensive variety of drinks to choose from. Your regular Coca-Cola products, to San Pellegrino sodas, Arizona iced tea, Snapple, and a bunch of other random lesser-known drinks (like fruit nectars from Egypt and Israel). MMMMMM. Burger Shack. I went to high school down the street from this place so I am well accustomed to it. If you can get past the 70's decor and grimy plaza (it's attached to a crappy looking Coffee Time) you will be rewarded by a great greasy meal. It is almost like a retro Harvey's where they announce your order into the mic even though they are like five feet away from the grill and you get to dress your burger from the large bowls of items from behind the glass counter. The burgers (if I recall correctly) come in different sizes and for a little bit extra you can have their special homemade burger. I defiantly recommend spending the little bit extra. The onion rings! Oh the onion rings! If you like golden, deep fried, greasy and delicious onion rings this is the place to come. The only place I've seen them almost as good would be Apache burger but in my opinion the burgers here are meatier and taste better. Their fries are pretty decent aswell. I also enjoyed the fact that cooked onions were another option of their condiments. They have a milk shake machine but the last time I had a shake here it was a bit grainy and not true to a good milk shakes creamy consistency or taste. When I was younger, many times a year, my family returned to Toronto to visit family, and on nearly every occasion we made a special trip to Burger Shack, which we inexplicably have renamed "Bongo Burger" (so much so that we've told people we'll meet them at Bongo Burger, only to be met with their blank stares). My Bubbe Ida passed in her 100th year, and in the last 5-10 years of her life, first her taste buds started to go, then she began to forget the foods she loved. At 97, for instance, she revealed to us that she'd never had and disliked gelato, though she'd been enjoying it her whole life. But, she never forgot Burger Shack, and she always perked up for an outing to get half (or slightly less) of a Banquet Burger. With little effort I can feel the crispy edges of the char-grilled Banquet Burger in my mouth, along with the sensation of trying to pick the whole thing up, loaded high with condiments and veggies you get to choose. I visited Toronto in late Jan 2012. I was dissapointed to realize that the show "Diners Drive-ins, and Dives" had no Canadian restaurants. I did a search for Canadian DDD's, and found this posting on Chowhound: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/619901 where Burger Shack was mentioned. I went one night during the trip; I got the bacon cheeseburger and fries. My American debit card wouldn't work in the ATM they have here, but thankfully they took US Dollars (at face value). The burger was good, but it tasted like spiced lamb, not beef. It was a very interesting an pleasing taste. The fries were very good. No complaints, and I wish I lived closer so I could try more items. Basically a step below a diner, but they do things very well. read more
