Toronto is filled with Jamaican/West Indian roti shops -- I know, because I've eaten at many of them over the past 25 years. Today, I made the mistake of purchasing a goat roti at Randy's on Yonge Street. At 1:20 PM, the place was completely empty. I approached the counter and was met with no greeting, no smile, not from the cashier nor from the two women near the hot table. The roti shell was undercooked, gummy, and doughy. The filling was 95% overcooked, tasteless potato, with only a few tiny bits of actual goat. The entire filling was dangerously well below safe temperature. When I politely requested a small amount of pepper sauce, a full whispered "committee meeting" began behind the counter about how to handle my simple request. After their U.N.-style debate, the final decision was: "Here's a tiny squirt of pepper sauce." Seriously? Penny‑wise and pound‑foolish has never cost a business more. Absolutely shameful. read more

I was walking by hospitals on university ave south of college and saw this truck. Decided to give it a try. Ordered the channa & potato roti. Good- price is good $11 plus tax, hot sauce is good spice level for me Ok - I didn't see much channa but mostly potato. There was some cabbage too which I have never had in a roti but I don't mind extra veggies. Sad- no dhal puri in the roti but maybe that's not Trinidadian??? ‍ Would I try it again? I've never ordered in person and always did it thru Skip or Uber so I can't comment on the actual service like other reviewers. Most Canadians have exposure to Caribbean food thru Jamaican places, which are known for bringing in the heat. Not all the islands cook the same. As someone who grew up in Barbados, I find that Randi's chicken/potato rotis are more similar to ours - not much spiciness and a hint of sweetness in the curry. So to me, the rotis were bomb! The jerk chicken with rice and peas came with the traditional sweet coleslaw. Once again, it was perfect for me as someone who cannot handle the heat of jerk. Let me tell you about Randy's lunch special. I will eat that salad and 4 doubles in under 5 mins no problem. The ladies that work that kitchen are serious about their business. Some of the most hard working and sweetest ladies I have met. They always make me feel right at home, hooking me up with that special hot sauce and leaving my belly full. Chef Randy himself was at the counter taking orders and he pointed out the special of the day which was a goat roti for 7.99. I also ordered 2 doubles (5.00) for my coworkers to sample. If I could give less than a star for my experience, I would. I ordered from Randy's through Uber eats and ended up paying over 60.00 for 2 dinners, chicken and fries and 4 doubles. Upon getting my order one of the dinners did not have any rice or coleslaw despite paying for it. We called the store and the only option was to come pick it up from the store! I ordered from Uber for a reason to NOT go into the store. The alternative solution was to get some next time as if there will be a next time. Apart from the inadequate service, the food is terrible, chicken was undercooked, and the doubles did not taste like doubles. Stopped in for a quick meal and was craving a roti. They take orders at the counter. The staffed seem busy with Uber Eats orders. It took a bit of time to take my order. I ordered a boneless chicken roti without potatoes. It didn't take long, and they made my ordered. First thing they should take the time and tidy up a little. The tables were a little sticky and had napkins stuck on the tables. Not overly dirty but, someone could come by and straighten up a little. Also, the napkins given were so thin. Eating roti can be messy. It doesn't make sense to use some cheap flimsy napkins. The Roti was okay. The filling had good flavor however, they included potatoes. Which annoying because it takes up most of the Roti. This is the reason I do not like potatoes in my Roti. I could of returned it but, I didn't want to wait and the potatoes are not a deal breaker. Overall, not the most amazing or best stuffed roti I've had (for background my family is Indian and I know this isn't an Indian place...). Can't say much more because I only sampled off my friend 2. Oxtail curry - delicious! First time having oxtail. I love the soft tendon around the tender meat. The meat to rice ratio was perfect! Lots of meat and sauce. The rice was not drowning in sauce and was definitely not dry at all. The coleslaw was among the best I've had. It was spicy, crunchy, fresh, and had a lot of flavour. The portion was so small though :'( 1 star lost because not only was the side/veggies small but the overall plate. Even after eating the main and half a double, I was still hungry. 3. Veggie double - small but very reasonably priced imo when compared to a taco that costs much more. The bread is so fresh and the curry was so flavourful. I also dislike how the dine-in food is served on paper plates. It is very wasteful and the plate does get quick soggy from the curry. Plastic cutlery is also used and I'm not sure if they have a recycling bin on site. Cups for water are also not given. Went to Randy's on Yonge St. during the lunch hour today for the first time in over a year to get some chicken roti. The food was always tasty and good value for the dollar. Naturally, the prices have gone up due to rapid inflation, but sadly, Randy's at Yonge and Yorkville is now only serving mash potato roti with chicken, beef and goat just as "a condiment." This is my new favourite restaurant. I have been here 3 desperate times to make sure I have been getting consistent quality, and each time, they have blown me away. I really hate writing negative reviews. I had been planning to eat at Randy's because I just discovered it had taken over Buster's Sea Cove and was near us. I arrived at around 7:30pm on Saturday for takeout - my order was taken pretty quickly, and it looked like there were about 4 others before me waiting for their food. One hour later, I'm still waiting, and asked at least four times on the status of my order, without getting any clear response. Others who were with me had long gone. Before going, I had read the negative reviews on Google/Yelp on the terrible wait and service, but I always give a new place the benefit of the doubt since they're just starting out. read more

So where do I begin? I've been here five times now and have to say that the food isn't particularly great. I keep going back hoping that maybe there is something on the menu that is particularly good, but I can't seem to find anything. The first time I ordered a jerk chicken with some rice and peas which came with side coleslaw. The coleslaw was fine, I don't expect much, and the rice and peas were okay. The chicken, however, was incredibly dry and flavourless. It had some kick to it, but I feel like the spices they use really try to cover up the fact that the quality of the chicken they use is really, really sub par as it was mostly bone and had very little meat. I also tried the curry goat and by that time, I was told that they stopped offer coleslaw with their meals but the prices remained the same. The goat was supposed to be boneless (it had a lot of bone shards in it) and the rice was veryyy soggy and bland this time. Their doubles are the feature piece on their menu, so I decided to give it a shot one day. I ordered two and was surprised with how little stuffing comes inside. Definitely not the best doubles in town. The roti however is fresh and very tasty! I decided to go off my experiences and choose what I thought they could probably make really well by going with a goat roti the last time I was there and got a Grace soda on the side. Can you believe that a grace soda that typically goes for less than a $1 costs $3+tax there? That much for something that's typically cheaper than a can of coke! Besides that, the roti had a lot of bones in it and wasn't that large despite me ordering a large. Not enough actual meat as it was mostly bone and potatoes. I also want to say that he really needs to do something about his food truck. I work in the area, and his food truck is constantly illegally parked on Yonge street blocking traffic north of Bloor going south or on the corner of Yonge and Scollard so far into the corner that pedestrians walking down Yonge have to trek on the busy road to get by. It makes driving down Yonge a huge headache. I talked to someone working there about it and was told something along the lines of "Too bad, what are you gonna do? Don't like it, then leave." Got the lunch special chicken roti. It was one of the worst xhicken rotis I've ever had. The roti was not dahlpuri roti which was my first disappointment. Maybe they do regular roti & not dahlpuri. And the chicken curry? I could have made better at home. And I am not of caribbean/guyanese/west indian descent. I always judge a caribbean roti restaurant by their chicken roti. I'd never heard of Randy's Roti before, but it looks like they started out as a food truck in Mississauga. Their new brick-and-mortar location at Yonge and Scollard is a welcome addition to the neighbourhood, but I've seen a lot of restaurants come and go at this address. I personally love Caribbean food, so I'm hoping "Randy" does well here. I ordered a large jerk chicken with rice and peas. The menu says "rice and peas OR coleslaw", but they gave me both. Maybe that's just what they do with the large. I'm not complaining; the coleslaw was extra crunchy and delicious. The jerk chicken was amazing! The meat was juicy, the skin nicely charred, and the seasoning doesn't hold back on the spice. My only complaint is that the rice and peas are cooked separately, and the peas are poured over top of the chicken. It didn't affect the flavour of the chicken, but the peas kind of congealed into a thin layer on the top. It didn't look very appetizing at all. I would have preferred if the peas and rice came mixed together. The portions are gigantic, but that's typical of most Caribbean places I frequent around the city. We've been coming to this place since they first opened their store. The first couple of times we went there the food was on point, the roti's and the doubles were very good in portion and the flavour was amazing. Since then when we've gone the portions have been smaller and the fillings are almost non existent. I was there a couple of weeks ago and ordered doubles to go and had a chickpea+potato roti while my boyfriend had a roti as well, neither of them had any flavour; the doubles had boiled chickpeas, there were no spicys, no sauce...it was terrible. This is supposed to be a Caribbean restaurant providing island flavours, sadly the only thing we tasted was bland and disappointment. My family and I really enjoyed this place when they first opened but now it seems the quality is getting worse. I doubt we'll be returning to this store again. read more

Had Randy's oxtail. I found it bland like others did as well & I agree with another reviewer that the portion was small for a large & considering how much I paid which was on the high side. But I understand that oxtail is expensive, but the portion still seemed small. And the hot sauce was pretty pathetic. Like the Ritz it was home-made & not in a good way. The bottled kind is sooo much better. But I still have to give it a 3 star because at least it was fresh. I agree with another reviewer - I feel like I have to continue my hunt for a truly awesome authentic Jamaican restaurant.
