Passing thru on the way back home to Atlanta and woke up from a nap just in time to get some chicken from a place from my childhood!! Shout out to Ahoskie, NC via Chatham VA!! Even though they were closing, they still provided awesome customer service and let me purchase what they had left. I won' t forget you Chatham!!

Some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. It seemed like the owner was behind the counter and she was super nice and training a young kid. It's nothing fancy but I'm sad that I have been driving by this place for years and just now stopped. Never again will I drive by. I'll be back.

Golden skillet in Chatham, VA - macaroni salad

What happened to getting your money's worth? Be prepared to spend money and leave hungry. My mother ordered a side of macaroni salad and paid almost a $1.50 for basically a sample. Disappointed she didn't check her bag before she pulled off, she will not make this mistake again. Shame on you Golden Skillet for being so stingy! Businesses don't thrive long like this. It will eventually show when customers fall off.

This is an awesome home town restaurant. I ate at this place growing up and continue when I come in to visit family. From the burgers to the chicken to the fish, it is so yummy!!! They have a good variety of different foods. Everything is good on the menu. Never ever have I had a bad experience here. Bake chicken is awesome! Fish sandwiches are awesome! Burgers are to die for too. Everything is cooked to order so you don't get leftovers that's been sitting around for an hour or so. Everything is cooked fresh!!!! Owner even works in here and super dooper nice. Customer service is top notch, friendly, and go beyond. Plenty of parking, bathrooms are old, could use an update, but like I said this place has been around so long. I don't come here to go to the bathroom I come here for the awesome food!!!!!! :) Highly recommend this gem of a restaurant in this small town, trust me you want be disappointed!!!!

The Golden Skillet - Fried Chicken & Seafood

The Golden Skillet Fried Chicken and Seafood had always been one of the local places that I've wanted to stop in from our trips up to Smith Mountain Lake from Wake Forest North Carolina for the past 4 years but never had until yesterday. Asked what the difference between the Jumbo Dinner and the 8 Piece Family dinner other than the price and it basically was that the Jumbo Chicken dinner was a Medium Family Dinner. And for two (2) adults the Jumbo was just the right size, price and still had a piece of homemade "Pee-Can" pie that's baked daily to share and it was still $5 less than the 8 piece Family Dinner with no soft drinks. The chicken was skillet or pan fried just right, crispy & light colored and over cooked on the outside and hot, tender and juicy on the inside. The pieces were huge and the flour coating was light airy and spiced just enough to still taste the succulent meat that I believe had been marinated in a buttermilk bath and then lightly coated with a dry spice mix .... very similar to KFCs original recipe with a hint of paprika, garlic powder and dry mustard. The "pee-can" pie was delish, crust was flaky and the filling was sweet (Karo syrup) and very light and not heavy like many other syrup based fillings and it was also lightly salted .... just like South Carolina "Pee-Can" pies that you would buy on the roadside diners. Highly recommend if you want something other than franchise fast food on 29 between Danville and Rocky Mount Va

Amazing fried chicken with all the fixings! On a recent road trip back from North Carolina, we were hungry for lunch and looking for interesting, but nearby, options. We decided on the Golden Skillet. This establishment offers counter service. The two lovely young women who took our order and prepared the food were friendly and efficient. Our group of four shared a fried chicken family meal with biscuits, cole slaw, and potatoes with gravy. Everything was delicious, especially the chicken. I've never had such well cooked chicken with a crispy flavorful crust. You can eat in the restaurant. When were in the restaurant, we were amongst some hungry locals, mostly men working in the area. The establishment is a bit worn and the restrooms are overdue for a renovation. But I overlooked these minor shortcomings because of the terrific local atmosphere, nice people, and tasty food. Bonus not often found in the north: Diet Dr Pepper available as a fountain drink.

I stopped in for lunch based on the high reviews and not wanting to hit up another fast food joint. Upon entering you can tell they are cooking up fresh fried chicken because the air is heavy with the smell of chicken grease. So much so, that it got in my clothes and I could smell it after I left. You order at the counter and they bring your order to the seating area. Service was fast and attentive. I got a plate of fried chicken with cole slaw, mashed potatoes and a roll. The place needs remodeling, especially the bathroom. The bathroom needs a new floor and a lot of work!!! My food came quickly though and it was tasty. The price about 10 dollars. The mashed potatoes and gravy were pretty similar to KFC. The cole slaw was mayo based and tasty with just the right amount. The chicken was crispy and tasty. The pepsi wasn't very good maybe too much soda water. The biscuit was tasty but had strange bits of margarine in it. I do recommend this place if you are in the area. I was disappointed that they use styrofoam here. For the price, they could use paper plates and cups!! Better for the environment!

Fried chicken was . Found this joint on Yelp as a meeting place between Northern, VA and Charlotte, NC. I had the fried, 3 piece chicken meal, which comes with mashed & gravy, cole slaw, and a biscuit. My buddy had a fried chicken sandwich. The chicken is outstanding! Lightly fried, slightly crisp on the outside, cooked to perfection and juicy in the inside. The mashed w/gravy and the biscuit were very good, and I thought the cole-slaw was good, but not great. It's a local joint, the people are super friendly. Overall condition of facility is average. Bathrooms are old and could be remodeled, but I don't really care about the bathrooms at a small town chicken place. Go there and enjoy the food and the friendly people!

The street situation precluded a few spots downtown, and since we weren't in the mood for our go-to taco place, we decided to head out to the Family Diner. The walk-in was awkward on our part- cash register or hot bar line first? A sweet call from the kitchen of "Y'all's first time?" got us headed in the right direction. Full disclaimer: I've been nostalgic for the southern cafeteria lately. While talking to some food industry friends last week, we realized there is something powerful about the food we all remember from K and W. And while Family Diner doesn't have a giant dining room or a 5-snake velvet rope line to get to the counter, it does take me back. Here's how we made our choices: the hot bar was a choice of three types of chicken- the baked and fried were tempting until the gentleman serving us says: "We can fry you fish to order. Flounder, trout, and catfish." The chicken got skipped for a plate of flounder (plentiful plate, btw), and a side of the Mac and cheese and cooked cabbage. The kid sampled the catfish plate, same sides. Sweet tea. And yes ma'am, I'd like the cornbread. Done. We sat down at a table in the main, cozy dining room. The first thing that I noticed: this place is clean- tidy, even. There was a super polite young man moving around and busing tables, tidying up unassumingly and doing it in a way that is lacking in some finer dining places I've been in recently. The food came out, piping hot. I used one of the malt vinegar packets to douse my flounder (a cafeteria habit) and dug in. The first bite was light and flaky, cooked perfectly. Nothing greasy-tasting, at all, just clean. The sides were great- nothing over seasoned, and like cooking at home, there was room for you to season things to your taste. Well played, Family Diner. The owner (I think? She was the one who guided us down the right path when we walked in) came out to make sure that we were happy, and yes ma'am, it's great, and holy cow, you just dropped this cornbread into the skillet and fried it? Yes, we will be back. It's unassuming, and it's just what the doctor ordered. It's a cafeteria, but it's clean and polite and makes you feel good that you ate there. It's soul food, but not just from an ethnic standpoint- it makes me happy and full and feel welcome and I'll be back.

It highly went beyond the highest of my expectations, and delivered an extraordinary dining experience. After making an appointment for five o'clock and mentioning that I would be celebrating my birthday there on that day, I wondered how it would be, for everytime I have dined there, their attention to detail has been superb, and their cuisine has been exquisite. The day finally arrived and I was standing by the door at five minutes to the hour. Inside I could see through their large front windows the movement of all the staff getting ready for the opening of the restaurant. At exactly five o'clock, the hostess approached and opened the door for me to enter. She warmly greeted me and apologized for not being able to give me the table I requested because they needed it to unite with other tables for a large group they would be having. But they had prepared another one in front of the open kitchen for me, where I would be able to observe the Chef and other cooks preparing my food. It was definitely to my satisfaction, and when she took me there I was very impressed with the small detail on the table of a Happy Birthday card from the restaurant signed by everyone there and suspended by a little stand. Things like that are priceless in my eyes. Shortly afterwards, my friendly and efficient server Ivy, came by, wished me a Happy Birthday and took my order. To drink I had my favorite Mocktail there, the Butterfly Kisses. As appetizer I ordered the Oyster Wraps. And for my main entrée, the Hanger Steak, my favorite item in their menu and that of all the other restaurants around the area. My server did an excellent job of bringing out my ordered items in a well-paced manner. I noticed the small but significant detail that the chef had of serving me a slightly larger amount of Hanger Steak than the usual, and this meant more to me than any of the other complimentary desserts which are given in most other restaurants on your birthday. The Hanger Steak was so delicious. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the high-quality of their food. Also to read my former review where I explain what a Hanger Steak is all about. For the Grand Finale of my Birthday meal I had their Panna Cotta dessert deliver with a burning birthday candle on top, another wonderful detail that many restaurants leave out now-a-days yet is so meaningful to many of us. This was truly a memorable dining experience. One that I will always remember and cherish dearly.

My friend and I walked in at 9 o'clock EXACTLY on a Thursday night to have a drink. The sign on the door said they were open until 10:00. There were 4 or 5 tables seated, enjoying dinner and cocktails. 5 or 6 people at the bar. There was no one to start with at the actual hostess stand and servers saw us standing at the door but did not approach us even though there was an hour left on their operating time. So we walked directly to the bar and sat down. We had just eaten at Fork in the Alley so all we wanted was one drink and we figured an hour was plenty of time to get that done. The first thing the bartender said to us was "The kitchen is closed." Not "hello" or "Hey what can I get you?" but the kitchen is closed. I said "oh I'm sorry I thought you closed at 10:00." He said "well, that's up for debate we were actually discussing that right now. We're basically closed but you can have a drink because it's not like the rest of these people are going anywhere." What do you mean that's up for discussion? Your hours say you're open till 10 o'clock, it's 9 o'clock I have an hour to eat and have drinks! The other bartender, or perhaps he was only a bar back, gave us a very disapproving look. I get it, I work in the food service industry. I'm a server at a 4 diamond restaurant, and I hate when people walk in minutes before we close and want to sit down. But if we post that we're open until 10 and you walk in at 9:45 I'm going to serve you and treat you like anyone else that walked in at 6:00 because it's your tips that pay my bills and put food on my table. It's definitely not the hourly wage I get from my employer! And as a server I never walk into a restaurant with less than 30 minutes to close. And it's more like an hour if I'm looking to eat a meal. I know you want to go home. When it's the end of the night and I'm at work, so do I! But there's an hour left and I wanted one drink. That's it! We continued to get disappointed looks from a few other employees even though we weren't the last people in the place. I told my friend (it's 9:45 at this point) that we obviously need to go since servers are standing around looking at us like we've got the plague. We paid our bill and promptly left. Two couples still at the bar. It's 9:59 right now as I'm writing this at home (you're still technically open btw) but I left feeling like I had stayed hours past your closing time. It's a real shame because we really enjoyed our drinks! They were super yummy! And I'm always getting asked by guests where's a good place for a late night cocktail and I used to recommend The River and Rail right along with Lucky's because we had a shuttle that would take guests out, but after tonight I won't be doing that anymore. Because there's nothing worse than feeling unwelcome at a restaurant that is still open.
