Wow, I haven't had Chinese food this bad in decades! First (and last) time visit. The wife ordered some pot stickers which had the usual appearance, but once sampled were very bland. Heavy on the dough with a pulverized meat (pork?) mixture in the center that was not seasoned at all. It doesn't help that I don't like salty soy sauce I guess. But neither of us tried a second one. We offered one to another in our party and she didn't even finish hers. The wife also ordered the Special Fried Rice with shrimp. Between the canned mushroom smell and the canned popcorn shrimp smell, and the bland starchy taste it was totally unappetizing, even repulsive. A huge plate of (dark) fried rice with only two bites taken out (mine and hers) was not taken to-go. She asked for a to-go box right away just to contain the odor but never got one. I ordered a spicy(?) entree, the Curry Chicken. It had no spice at all and no curry taste for that matter; I thought someone had substituted chow mein for my order, at least that is what it tasted like. The real insult came when the waitress came back and cleared the table. Noticing the huge pile of uneaten fried rice she then proceeded to ask my wife where she was from (we have lived all over the country). The implication was clear that she did not know what good Chinese food should taste like. Then she asked the rest of the group where they were from. Instead of offering to comp the meal we got a social scolding about how ignorant we were. We had a large, diverse group (8) and service was not particularly attentive; once the order was delivered the server moved on until it was time to pay. There were other large groups coming in as well on a Sunday. Decor was old and dirty. Even the menu covers looked worn but I found the date of 2014 in a lower corner. However the prices inside were 2024 prices; it appears that they unwound the spiral binding to replace the menu pages inside. Overall, I think this restaurant has been in business so long at this location that the management has become complacent. But they seem to have enough locals who like the restaurant that they remain profitable, and the location is excellent now with the rebirth of downtown Caldwell. Only one person out of the eight was satisfied with their food; seven different entrees, one duplicate. read more

Where to even begin? I wish it were possible to give zero stars, alas that is not possible. I also wish we had read the yelp reviews before deciding to dine here. At first, we were very excited. There were fish, a nice casual ambiance, all seemingly perfection for the night out. The lovely evening came to an end when our server, bless her heart, took 30 minutes to get our drink order (keep in mind, we were one of four tables filled). After receiving our drinks, it took maybe 20ish minutes for her to come back to take our food order. We ordered the shrimp chow mein and the beef chow mein. It took far longer than necessary for our food to arrive to the table, and the sight before us was abysmal. Our chow mein was chow lame! It was a pile of mostly celery, bamboo shoots, and meat chunks brought together in one culinary tragedy by brownish-grey gelatinous sauce. Not to mention, we knew the chow mein noodles were pan fried, but we were appalled when we saw brown crunchy sticks under the sludge. We were hesitant, but didn't want to judge before tasting. Then we tasted it. It was dreadful. We couldn't help but laugh at how absurd the whole situation was. We scarfed down three bites before giving up. I had ordered chicken and rice soup on the side, and despite how offensive it looked, I was hoping it would be better than the disaster in front of us. It was not. It was chicken logs and undercooked rice in lukewarm water! How appetizing! At this point, we decided to cut our loses and asked for the check and two boxes, in an effort to be polite about the food. Our server, surprise surprise, took a very long amount of time to bring us our check, and after bringing us the wrong receipt before finding ours, didn't tell us we had to bring it up to the front (we came in from the side entrance) so we sat for maybe fifteen minutes waiting for someone to take the check before I waved her down and asked. She then told us to go to the front and brought us the forgotten boxes. We paid our check and after an encounter with a creepy customer, hurried about to get on our way. Ok, this place has me cracking up... this is like a time capsule. If you are older, (35+) this is like walking back in time. You can tell the place has been there for a long time. Not that it is dirty or anything, just the decor. They really haven't changed anything in decades, and that is the charm. The food was 100% old school American-Chinese food. None of the fancy funky fusion stuff, but good old sweet and sour chicken with the neon pink sauce... it was crazy sitting there, eating in a place that reminded me of my first experience as a kid in an old Chinese restaurant. I called 10 times trying to get through while being driven to Golden Palace restaurant as we were 20 minutes away. We were hoping to call in the order for carryout. We couldn't get the phone to ring, the message kept saying "Sorry, the line is busy right now.". We were discussing perhaps they were super busy and maybe we should plan to call in an order elsewhere. When we arrived the place had like 27-28 tables in front and there were only FIVE booths occupied. I peeked into the conference room thinking maybe they have a huge party in there, nope! There is a table in the conference room that they place the carryout orders on, there were three orders sitting there for pickup. In the conference room there was a table of 10 people seated, other than that crickets in this place. I placed my order and now have a 20 minute wait for carry out. One couple read the menu and walked out. I have now been here 10 minutes and the phone has only rang twice. Oh, and so far I have counted 4 waitresses including a hostess. Hmm. My conclusion is, the workers must be unsupervised by the people who own and care about making a profit around here. This is really unfortunate because the food usually is very good.
