Finally I PASSED the road test on the first try even though I have never driven a car before learned driving at this school. My friend recommended this school to me. She and four other her 4 friends passed on the first try too. Their instructor was Eric but my instructor was David. I'm from a country that uses UK systems. We drive on the left lane. The driver on the right side of the car. I have never driven a car in my country but I rode a bicycle and motorcycle when I was there. I was a little bit confused with the lane when I first rode the bicycle here but now I have been riding a bicycle in the summer every year for 5 years already so I wasn't confused with the lane when I was learning how to drive a car. I registered for 5 sessions and 2 road tests. It's not too short and not too long for me. I got 10 points from too slow a turn cuz the day that I took the road test it was raining and I didn't want to drive fast but I forgot to check the speed. lol David has been an instructor for 11 years. He is kind, friendly, calm, observant, encouraging and patient. He can repeat his words more than 20 times without feeling moody. :) The important thing is that he remembers my improvement. In the 4th session I drove the car not even 5 minutes. He asked me, "Did you practice with another car?" (He knows it. I thought) Right before the 4th session I rented the car and practiced with my friend and checked around the area that I have to do the road test. The difference between practicing with my friend and David is that my friend doesn't know that I did the right thing or I did not, such as before changing lanes or turning right, my friend can not tell me that I checked blind spot or checked and waited for pedestrians on the street corner but David knows.  My friend didn't observe me. I like checking around, I mean checking the mirror when I drive. I check the ​​rearview mirror and the left mirror to see who follows and wants to pass me or the right mirror that I drive too close on the right side, I do it by automatic like I ride a motorcycle. David said "It's nice to check around" (He knows it. I thought). David makes me feel confident enough to drive with other cars cuz he always tells me what situations that I did right and what situations that I did wrong or shouldn't do. Before the 5th session me and my friends rented the car and drove to Montauk. It was the first time that I drove on the highway (I drove form exit 53 to Montauk and drove back from Montauk to Elmhurst,Queens) it was fun. The staff were very nice and helpful. They helped me to arrange my classes schedule when my instructor was out of the city. They know which day and period of time is very nice and easy to pass the road test. That's amazing. read more

I first bought the 4 session package (comes with a scheduled road test and pre-licensing course) but failed the first time. After taking 3 more sessions, I was able to pass the second time around! Best experience ever! Took me two weeks to train up and just passed the road test today. So glad that I ended up choosing this driving school. I'd say Golden Medal really has the best 5 hour course and driving instructors (Out of whom my coach Francis is probably the best) Make sure you get Francis as your driving instructor and you will definitely be in good hands! Francis is more than just a patient coach. He knows how make the best use of your class hours. He teaches in a way that makes things stick in your head. Francis Zhang is a really responsible coach. I passed my test easily even though I was too nervous to breathe. You know, it was my second time to take this road test, so I was under huge pressure. I had a great experience taking driving classes with Francis. Francis is a great instructor! He was really patient teaching me how to make turns, stop, parallel park, and K turn. I did mess up a lot in the beginning and it took me a while to understand but he provided really helpful constructive criticism and feedback to help me improve each time. I had no prior experience driving and my family doesn't have a car to practice on so the 20 lessons (effectively 10 lessons since lessons are doubled up) were all the practice I had, yet I was able to pass the road test on the first try today! Instructor Hua is the best instructor ever!! He helped me pass my test on the second try. Without him I'd still be without a license cause I suck at driving but he helped me become better. I signed up for 5-90 minute classes, pre-licensing course, and road test scheduling + car for $220. The price is quite good which is why I signed up. Scheduling the driving lessons, road test and pre-licensing course was not bad as the receptionist is pretty organized. The one downside was that there was a month between my lessons and road test. The reason I'm giving two stars is the driving lessons and driving instructor. I had Simon as my driving instructor and I was told that my instructor speaks both Mandarin and English. He barely speaks any English and had to explain terms in Mandarin. That's alright because I understand some Mandarin but obviously prefer English. On the first lesson, he pretty much expects you to know how to drive. He berates you if you mess up. Like come on, I signed up for driving lessons so that I can learn how to drive. During each lesson, he pretty much has one hand on the wheel because he's afraid that we're going to hit something. I understand your concern but what is the point of driving school if you're literally holding the wheel. It is his personal car which is why he's so concerned. During each lesson, we're driving the same residential area with same turns and places. There's nothing unique in each lesson or different possible variables. Also, his way of teaching is very flawed. Everything from turning, to parallel parking and 3-point turning is in terms of a special formula and revolutions. There is no instruction on the feel for the car. Everything is on precise rotations of the wheel which is just wrong after talking to other experienced drivers. The one thing that pissed me off the most was that during the lessons, he would say I need more practice. If you don't practice between lessons, you are just wasting your time and my time. Like seriously? I'm literally paying you and it's not a "waste of your time." This is your job. At the last lesson, he told me to buy more lessons. Lol no thank you. Due to the one month gap between my last lesson and the road test, I ultimately failed. They scheduled my road test at Kissena and heard that is the one of the hardest places to get tested. Also, not sure if it was me or the examiner because the examiner was a complete dickhead but I did feel uncomfortable during the road test. After I failed the road test, Simon said he's not surprised since you need more practice. I decided to go with another driving school. At that school, I paid a little extra for additional couple hours of practice and road test. I was able to schedule lessons and a road test within two days of each other. I had all the freedom during the lessons and I passed with only 10 points off of deduction. This is why I do not recommend Golden Medal Driving school. read more

My driving instrutor discouraged me. He expected you to drive like an expert after your first lesson.

Absolutely horrible experience with driving instructor, Simon. 1. The school says that he speaks both English and Mandarin, but the only thing he can say in English is "let's go". He had to use Mandarin every time to explain. 2. Because of COVID-19, he asks all his students to sanitize their hands before entering his car which is very understandable, however, he then proceeds to spray disinfectant all over my body. Spraying individuals with such chemicals is cited by many health experts as having harmful health effects, not to mention, even if a person is potentially exposed to the COVID-19 virus, spraying the external part of the body does not kill the virus that has entered the body. During my lesson, he made me wear food prep gloves while driving. I understand that COVID-19 precautions must be taken, however, spraying people with disinfectant and making them wear food prep gloves is unreasonable while driving. 3. During my one lesson with Simon, he barely said anything as I was driving for the whole 1.5 hours besides "let's go". I already know how to drive and took the lesson to learn specifics for the road test, but Simon was not very helpful. He also asked me to pull over during my lesson and he went outside to chat with other instructors for 5 minutes, taking away time from my lesson that I paid for. 4. Before my road test, Simon pulled out a calendar and pointed to the other lessons he taught last week. He told me that his students who passed last week gave him a $20 tip, pointing to the $20 he wrote on his calendar. This is so unprofessional and shows he cares more about taking your money than actually teaching you. 5. When I went to take my road test, we arrived 45 minutes early and he asked me to wait in the car while he went outside to chat with other driving instructors. During the 45 minutes, he left the car turned off. Keep in mind that this is in the summer and it was pretty hot on this day. When it was time for me to take my test, the DMV tester took my temperature and said it was too high so I could not take my test and have to reschedule. I tried to explain that I was very hot and had been sitting in the sun for the past 45 minutes with no AC. I understand that the DMV tester had to follow precautions and could not administer the test to me, but Simon told me to get out of his car because he was afraid I had COVID-19 even though any rational person would understand why being in a hot car for 45 minutes with no AC would result in me having a higher temperature than usual and I have already been fully vaccinated for months. Simon drove away, leaving me stranded at the test location with no ride (despite the fact that the lesson/road test I paid for includes a ride back.) Overall Simon is a horrible instructor who only cares about taking your money. If you go to Golden Medal Driving School, absolutely DO NOT get Simon as your instructor. read more

I experienced driving with another driving school prior to this one. I chose here because the package prices were much better than I had before. I brought the 5 90-minutes lessons and 2 road test at a good deal. The pre-licensing gone a pretty thorough explanation. I had Simon as my instructor and gives good tips and he is a patient guy. He gives comments and correct what should be done. I recommend him to teach anyone who wants to drive properly. Sometimes Simon would control the wheel if he think you might hit another car. Sometimes I think it's luck depending who is the examiner for the road test and I passed my road test at Kissena Park with this driving school. read more

This is the best driving school in Queens so far, and I'm highly recommend instructor: Mr. Zhang (Shanghainese). He is one of the most senior instructors from Golden Medal school for over 10 years of the driving experience, I was referred by one of my friends also, he's really smart and patient towards students, and he has his own way of teaching, it took me one shot to pass my road test after 5 classes with him. I also compared the charges among all other driving schools in queens found out that Golden Medal is the most reasonable one. I passed my road test on my first attempt!!! I had Mr. Francis as my driving instructor. He explained everything very calmly and took the time to make me understand the details and the technicalities. A few of the people i know also had him as their instructor and they all passed the test as well. Cannot recommend him enough! The lesson fee is also relatively cheap and the process of signing up for the test, and scheduling of the classes was easy as well. There was usually availability according to my schedule, so that was something I appreciated. Have to say, I was surprised with the first impression when all my questions were resolved by the receptionist. Friendly, patient, charming smile and even better, fast and easy appointment! My first lesson with my personal coach was outstanding, he's got all the patience that you can ever imagine, not to mention it was my first time behind the wheel. Those packages are cheaper if compare with other driving school. I still felt terrible practice after got 12 lessons package, they asked me to buy more lessons due to I need more practice. Just be careful this point, also I am not sure if "tips" are necessary need to pay the instructor.
