The Golden Lion is a long-standing Chinese food restaurant in Surrey. While it is more often a takeout go to go to, eat in service is friendly and food comes promptly. Recently we popped in for a quick dinner on the go and we were not disappointed. We ordered the dinner for 2, with fried rice, beef chop suey and sweet and sour pork. I have ordered take out from this restaurant twice, and twice the food was different. We enjoyed the Won Ton soup the first time around, but the second time there was no pork and the stock tasted like beef not chicken. The pineapple pork was ok, but stringy. The rice was absolutely tasteless. And what about the egg rolls? They are big oval/round clumps with the worst insides I've ever eaten. I have yet to find a decent Chinese restaurant in BC so I might have to wait to return home to Nova Scotia to find one that uses fresh veggies and makes great dim sum. Save your money. read more

The servers were very kind (my elderly Dad was very carsick when he arrived, and they tried so hard to help us). Was here for a family birthday and ordered a bunch of dishes so was able to sample everything from a couple of fried rices, and your typical dishes. Striking that most of the people there that night (Friday night) were old and non-Chinese. It was a recommendation by my mother-in-law (bless her heart). Greasy, bland tasting, weak portions. Décor was extremely old school. Reminded me of those Chinese restaurants in the Jackie Chan movies. Ok, some might say the food didnt' taste authentic, but let me tell you, food here reminded me of the nomz I used to eat when I was younger back in Asia. Nothing special - ginger beef was pretty good, but the chicken chow mien was by far the worst effort of the dish I've ever seen. Just a few tiny bland, boiled chicken strips on a heap of noodles. For me, this is probably a bit generous though at least I know what I'm expecting---Chinese food made for the western market, and that's fair enough given the demographics in here. But it's a 3 star considering there's not much Chinese restaurants in the area. Big restaurant that can accommodate big groups. Own parking lot, a big one, and when walking up, it does feel like going to an all you can eat. Expect nostalgic decor haha. But they do speak fluent English and offer delivery, so that's the extra star. read more

Our favorite Chinese restaurant by far. It's what everything else is compared to. Our regular order is chicken fried rice, chicken chow mein, sweet and sour pork, almond chicken and sometimes egg rolls. Egg rolls tend to be on the greasy side but they are really good ~ big handmade ones, not the little skinny ones that come frozen from a box. I will say that sometimes the flavor is more intense than other times... not sure why that is but regardless, it's a treat whenever we have "Golden Lion". As for my mark on the price maybe it's the American exchange but seems a little pricy to me. Still worth it though :) read more

My family has been going to and taking out from the Golden Lion my entire life! It is classic American Chinese food nothing authentic about them at all! Although the Chinese community has a decent footprint in neighbourhoods near the Golden Lion you very rarely see many of the frequent this restaurant. So authentic they are not! But tasty if you enjoy good fresh always very fresh American style Chinese food no place comes close to Golden Lion! I do have to say this one thing, they did have a fire several years ago now and we're closed for at least a year due to the damage. They reopened and the interior is EXACTLY the same like to the scratch the same. I know the kitchen got Re done but a place stuck in the 1960s you would think they would at least get new wall paper ;-) read more

What happened, Golden Lion!? It's been a while since I've ordered from these guys, and White Rock isn't exactly known for it's selection and quality of ethnic eats, but I remember this place being so much better than what I've recently experienced. Sharing between three people, we ordered the following: BBQ pork fried rice, honey garlic boneless pork, deep fried prawns with sweet and sour sauce, and beef and broccoli. The fried rice was actually okay, but it's pretty hard to mess up rice. We opened the container labelled honey garlic pork to reveal - bone dry pork with honey garlic sauce pooled at the bottom, and not nearly enough to cover what was there. I shouldn't have to toss the food in its sauce, Golden Lion, that's your job. I paid $8.95 for it, so I could just open it up, no assembly required. The beef and broccoli should've been shown on the menu as "Broccoli & Broccoli (maybe with some beef, if you're special)", as there were maybe a few tiny slivers of beef in this order. Finally, tiny prawns coated in thick, tasteless batter that resembled a cottonball in your mouth sealed the deal on this one for me. The only reason I didn't hand this place a one measly star rating: Silver Dragon got that rating from me, and THEY gave me food poisoning. Although I didn't find myself going down on a toilet, this is the last Golden Lion will see of my money. read more

They were able to adapt to fit my dietary requirements (vegetarian) so I was able to order for one without ordering each items separately and it costing more. HI! I have been to a lot of regular Chinese food places and have had good and very bad. Last night I just wanted my usual dishes that I almost always order. I decided to give this place a try and prepared for the worst. Much to my surprise: Very polite phone exchange, good English understanding, They delivered very quickly, within the time frame they gave me. The food was excellent! The chow mein had lots of all the other ingredents, (not mainly just noodles), the deep fried prawns were yes ,battered, (that is what we expect when we order them) and very crispy-yum! The pineapple boneless deep fried pork was very flavorful with other things, not just sweet and sour sauce! I definitely will order from them again! :) p.s., I think we are supposed to ask for fortune cookies and chop sticks. When I arrived I told them I was there to pick up a take out order. Gave my name and my wife's they asked for a phone number so I gave them my wife's cell. The "gentleman" (used very loosely) asked again what the last 4 digits were I again told him. He said " are you sure what did you order" I told him my wife ordered so I am not sure what was ordered. He asked again what the phone number was, I gave it to him - all 9 numbers. He said " that's not correct can you call your wife and find out what was ordered" I said no you can either give it to me or keep it and I will go somewhere else. He then said it was the only take out order he had. Not sure how stupid you can get. Hindsight I should have left it there as it is without a doubt the WORST Chinese food I have ever had. Our family has been going to Golden Lion for years, 20 years plus. It is not authentic or Gourmet, but very very consistent American Chinese, and is very good. We have enjoyed having Connie as our waitress and she has usually been there to greet us, again at least 20 years! Amazing! The food comes quickly, is always good and we have a lovely Chinese dinner with lots of leftovers to take home for lunch. The decor definitely needs updating but it is always busy and nobody seems to mind. It's the Golden Lion that we are used to and look forward to being the same every visit! read more

We decided to try Golden Lion as take out. It was a mistake. I've had bad Cantonese in my time but these guys take the cake.The chicken chow mein was plain spaghetti with no chicken, sauce or any seasoning whatsoever, just plain white spaghetti with mystery flakes that I think were tofu and some onion. The ginger beef looked an unappetizing grey and was basically very tough strips of beef (I think), sugar, water and cornstarch sprinkled with a bit of ginger powder served with almost raw red capsicum peppers. The kids couldn't chew the beef strips they were so hard. The beef and broccoli was almost all broccoli ( we counted four tiny pieces of beef) but at least the broccoli was cooked. The kids liked the plain rice. When I called to discuss the very poor quality with management, they simply hung up. We subsequently threw everything in the garbage. 50 dollars wasted and a promise never to order from there again. I'm baffled how this place stays in business. read more
