After running a few errands with my mom, we were wanting a bite to eat. The place had come on my feed recently and wasn't too far away. The place is tucked in to the corner of a strip center, adjacent to some sketchy apartments. We were greeted promptly and invited to choose our own table. There were a couple of other tables occupied. Our server soon visited to take our drink order. I ordered iced tea. I liked that this place had daily specials. I chose the combo lunch special which came with moo goo gai pan, fried rice, sweet and sour pork, and an egg roll. Our food was brought soon after. The moo goo gai pan had decent flavor. The sweet and sour pork was a little heavy on the sweet side. I'd prefer the sauce on the side so the pork could be dipped in it. The egg roll was decent, but nothing spectacular. I did catch a glimpse of a lemon chicken plate, and it looked mighty tasty. If I ever make it back here (which is highly unlikely), I will probably give that try. read more

If I could give this place a 0 I would. I ordered the orange chicken didn't have any chives and wasn't extra spicy how I had ordered. The rice had no flavor and no soy sauce on the table. You'd think the unsweet tea would be good considering it's $3, NOPE just tastes like sugar water. Also the health inspection paper was from 2019. I've read the other reviews on here and my experience was quite different. Our waiter was super helpful and personable, even having patience with our young children and their off the wall questions. We had the lemon chicken, orange chicken, chicken fried rice (I'm sensing a theme for the day), egg drop soup, pot stickers, and the pan fried dumplings. The unsweet iced tea was nice a light, not overwhelming or burnt tasting like many local places. This feels like a strange thing to consider but it does make a difference. Both the dumplings and rangoons were the perfect type or fried. Like just crispy enough with just enough chew to it also... like... Al denté??? ...If there's a description like that for frying. The orange chicken said it was spicy on the menu but it really felt like "white people spicy"... like if Tom and Jan from Iowa were visiting they would describe it as spicy, but for we south texas folk we'll say it's zesty. Sauce was great. Good consistency not overly sweet like most. Chicken was perfectly fried. Definitely would eat this one again. Lemon chicken was a slightly different breading than I've seen anywhere else (regional, perhaps?) but was delightful. Nice and crunchy but easy to work through. Chicken inside was hot and moist. The lemon sauce comes on the size so you get to be the sauce boss. Would also eat this again. The fried rice is cooked without soy sauce. It is very light and simple tasting but not bland. The waiter notified me upon ordering and offered soy sauce on the side. This worked greatly to my benefit because one of my kids loved it as is and the other wanted soy sauce. I enjoyed it both ways but settled into a light drizzle and found a good balance. The egg drop soup was rich and colorful, and the wonton strips blended in perfectly. If for absolutely nothing else, I would come back here and eat 3 of these soups as a meal. This is probably the best one I've had in the area. Someone else was mentioning the high price vs portion size and again I'll disagree. We had: 2 appetizers 1 soup 3 sodas 1 iced tea 3 entrees Between the 4 of us and we left with enough to feed 2 of us for another meal and the check was under $55. That's $13.75 per person for good, fresh food. I'll definitely eat here again and y'all should try it too! read more

I was starving and just wanted something decent for dinner, so I decided on Golden Kirin. I ordered a Hot & Sour soup and the Ma Paw Tofu with white rice for takeout. The restaurant is very simple, no frills on the corner of a large strip mall. The lady at the front counter was nice. There were diners at three tables which for middle of the day during the week can be a good sign. I noticed a roach crawling across the carpet which can be a bad sign. The hot & sour soup was tasty and had a nice amount of veggies and ribbons of egg. My Ma Paw Tofu tasted okay, but it was nothing special. This is the first time I've ordered Ma Paw Tofu that didn't come with a blend of vegetables, only pieces of green onions. The tofu squares were small, and there was a good amount of oil sitting in the bottom of the takeout container. Overall, the food wasn't terrible, but underwhelming compared to similar dishes I've had from other places. Total for the food came out to about $14, not bad for something quick but some veggies in the entree would've made a better impression in my opinion. read more

What's not to love? The service is always excellent, the food is cooked fresh and always flavorful, the prices are super affordable and the food always comes out exactly how we request it. My husband is a picky eater and sometimes it's hard to find a restaurant that will cater to his needs. A lot of times they get the order wrong or just ignore his requests entirely. Well, Golden Kirin always gets his order right and we appreciate that. The service is always great. One of our favorite waiters is Eric. He always serves us with a smile and is attentive, quick and efficient. I love great customer service at restaurants because it is so hard to find nowadays. The food is also top notch. My favorite plate is the eggplant with garlic sauce but I've never had a dish that I didn't like at this place. Don't forget to start with the crab rangoons which are filled to the max with cream cheesy goodness! Yummy! My husband loves their chicken and broccoli. He tells me that the broccoli is always super fresh and their chicken is always tender. I'm glad he loves the food here. It's hard to find a restaurant that he really likes. This place isn't fancy, nor is it located in the fancy part of town but we love it. We love finding small, local, family owned restaurants that have good food and even better service. My wife had a glass of water and drank from it, put it down and as soon as she put it down the glass shattered everywhere. 3 waiters there and none lifted a finger to help. A waiter with a purple shirt that usually wears that with tight skinny jeans as if she looked good in it who I believe runs the place came over and didn't speak a word to us, just said it going to get a bucket to pick it up to the coworker. In a city of swanky joints like P.F. Chang's and Mi Tierra's, where you have to know which is your soup spoon and which one is you salad one, it's nice to find places hidden on the beaten path. It most cases this is where the true flavor of our city resides. The Golden Kirin, a little gem hidden in a strip mall in Balcones Heights is such a place. It's tucked away around by Planet Fitness and a Rent A Center. If you are not careful you will miss it. When you get there you can smell the sweet scent of Chinese Food cooking. Mind you this is not some place where there is some stuffy maitre'd. It is as basic and bare bones as a spot that you will find. It is small and quaint, but still there is room to sit comfortably without helping a patron with their Won Ton Soup. The decor of the place is pretty outdated and they were playing soft rock over the restaurant, but not annoyingly loud. It does seem a bit beat down, like this place has seen better days. Our server came and brought me a menu. The menu itself is pretty simple and basic: veggie delight, pork, orange chicken among some other items. I noticed that the prices for plates and everything else was cheap and affordable. So I ordered the Lemon Chicken( Que typical!) And the service? Well, it was excellent! The server was very attentive and never rushed you to make your order. The food came out nice and hot and more importantly it was Fresh! What makes it so awesome was that I saw the same server a few minutes later taking care of a table with a party of twenty people and did not even flinch. And two seconds later he had a pitcher ready to refill my cup with water. And yes, the food was pretty darn good! My only critique is that you have to pay extra if you want fried rice in lieu of the steamed one that comes with your plate, other than that there were no other complaints I had. So if you want to go to place where the chef throws a knife up high in the air, then catches it and cuts your shrimp. Or you expect to see the same pan your desert will be served in to be torched into a thousand fiery flames by a cook, this might not be the place for you. But if you want good Chinese Food at cheap prices then go check this place out! While you won't see an Iron Chef frequenting this place anytime soon, your wallet and stomach will be much fuller when you leave. read more
