I once called in just to get a quiche which is ridiculous because that's probably the last thing this business is known for (it was amazing for your information), and walked out with 3 slices of cake, 3 Banoffe pies and 4 tarts. I took half of them home and the other half to Uni with me and before I could even explain to everyone what they were, they were gone. The Welsh Lady is a deceptive temptress who lures you in with her unassuming shop front, tucked away in Rosalie and STEALS YOUR WALLET AND YOUR WAISTLINE! Eventually returning both, one thinner, the other thicker (I'll let you guess which is which). Everything they bake here makes you want to quit life and die from a decadent, gluttonous overdose of sugary wonderment. Specializing in cakes to order they have everything you can imagine and more. Words can't do this place justice, so if you are wanting the perfect wedding or birthday cake, or simply just something sweet for any type of celebration The Welsh Lady should be your first port of call. P.S The Banoffe pies are out of this world, go now and get yourself one before they are deemed illegal.

Personally, I fall into the vanilla cake category but the Welsh Lady is the only cake shop that has the ability to make me question my allegiance to Team Vanilla. If you're a fan of chocolate cake, the muddier, richer, and more decadent the better, then the Welsh Lady is your holy grail. Her deep, dark mud cakes are so moist and dense that it's almost like she's mixed dark chocolate mousse into the batter. Most of my friends fall into Team Chocolate and I've become very used to being served a piece of chocolate birthday cake at parties and leaving it on the plate half finished. A couple of years ago at a dear friend's 21st I watched the cake be presented with a flourish. Chocolate again, I thought. I had to admit that it was a beautiful looking cake, covered in huge, elaborate chocolate curls and sprouting sparkly butterflies and stars on silver stems but I didn't expect my tastebuds to enjoy it as much as my eyes were. After one bite of the cake I knew there'd be no half-eaten leftovers on my plate this time. Through a mouthful of mud cake I demanded to know where my friend had gotten such a cake. 'MULSH NADY' she replied, her mouth was just as full as mine. 'Huh?'. She swallowed her chocolate-y mouthful and said 'Welsh Lady'. I nodded, swallowed, and went back for seconds.

There are always utes in the carpark. My favorite local bakery, located near the Coles in Ashgrove. I have been going to this bakery my whole life and I'm reasonably certain that they use the same recipes. If you get there early in the morning the bread is still warm...mmmm. Standard prices for a local bakery... i.e. cheap. Couple of dollars for most things. They have the whole range you would expect at a local bakery: different types of bread, rolls, pastries, meat pies, sandwiches, mini quiches, croissants, lamingtons, etc. You can also buy a meat pie or a quiche for dinner that would feed a few people. Be warned though, the croissants sell out early on Saturday mornings. Enjoy!

The previous owners did a careful handover and my son says the pies and lamingtons are maintaining the high standards established by the previous owners. The pies and mini quiches are very popular. So are the croissants: these are usually sold out by morning tea time so get in early. There is so much renovation going on in Ashgrove these days and those tradies know a good croissant when they smell one. They also often sell out of my favourite bread: the whole meal. It is fresh and tasty. Great hamburger buns and baguettes too.

I have an embarrassingly childish love of sickly sweet Asian bakery style cakes. You know the kind…read moreI mean, the bakeries that sell caterpillar shaped meringues, gingerbread men, and those really, really fluffy sponge cupcakes with lots of bright coloured buttercream icing and smarties on top. Oh, and cream buns, and neenish tarts, and custard tarts. Apricot danishes! Man, I could go on. I find it pretty hard to walk past one of those Asian bakeries, and Ray's is kind of the King of these type of bakeries owing to it's massive selection of sugary delights and the huge, colourful family-sized cakes that catch your eye as you walk past. Ray's is right outside my local Coles and it's like torture trying to walk past without buying a pink and white neenish tart or jam lamington. And as far as Asian bakeries go, Ray's cakes and biscuits are the best! Their cake is so light and chiffon-y and their icing is all smooooth. My mouth is literally watering right now. I've noticed that they also do pies, pasties, and sausage rolls etc., but honestly I can't get past the sweets. I know these kind of establishments aren't spectacularly classy or exceptional, but the kid in me just can't resist a meringue caterpillar.

Ray's Patisserie is well loved and adored by Newmarket locals (or Meat-Market as I like to call it…read more There are no ugly people in the suburb.) They have won stacks of awards for their efforts, all of which are detailed and framed along the walls of this gorgeous little bakery, and I admire anyone with a passion and drive for their industry. The artistry on the cake selection is slightly 80s but still impressive - piped icing and sugar flowers adorn the brightly coloured birthday and christening cakes, and you can tell they have been expertly and lovingly made. They have a solid selection of pies and pastries, but what I most enjoy about ray's is their salad sandwich. Yes - it's my favourite. A simple roll with lettuce, cheese, carrot, beetroot, tomato and cucumber, and yet it's so good. A friend of mine used to visit Ray's every day for a sausage roll and he swears they are the best in the area. Give Ray's a chance. It's not swanky or trendy or down with the times, but it's simple and keeps the Meat-Market locals happy.
