Oh blessed Mega Grain - 13 types of grain in one loaf. Take that Helga's!
    Marianna S.

My friend was in tears when the bakery owner took an extended holiday over the New Year period. How could she last without her traditional mega grain loaf? As a frequent sufferer of constipation, I was sympathetic and recommended the alternative Helga's five seed loaf. It turned out she wasn't eating the mega loaf for its bowel moving powers. She was in love with the taste of its grainy goodness. And furthermore, it contained thirteen different grains. Thirteen! How could Helga's five seed loaf ever compete? Thankfully, this is the only thing we disagree about concerning this bakery. Everything else here is delicious from their sausage rolls to their designer cupcakes and raspberry bar cake. When you're use to Baker's Delight or Brumby's, one almost forgets how good a traditional bakery can be.

I've been frequenting this place regularly and they'd have to have one of the best Bahn Mi offerings outside of West End and Sunnybank. Whilst more pricey than most places, the Bahn Mi here boast a load of filling and flavour - with the pork meatball offering being the best. The pies are also worth checking out, as is the wide variety of hot food in the cabinet at the front - steer clear of the spring rolls though. They ain't great.

These guys do a great one. I'd really love it if they'd add a hit of maggi sauce, and some sharper pickled veg. I'd also love it if they'd add the pate that is so common in Vietnam. But these are quibbles with what are a: cheap, b: great value and c: very tasty sandwiches. They'll add a really cracking chilli paste if you ask them. They also do great noodle salads for under $8. The meatball and spring roll is a personal favourite. I probably wouldn't rate them as a replacement for Mrs Luu's over in Miltion which is doing really great things with Vietnamese 'street' lunches of all persuasions. That said, Central Brunswick Bakery punches well above the weight of the standard small family bakery and is terrific value. I'm assured their cold ricepaper rolls are also lovely and they stock standard bakery fare as well.

You will find something tol fulfill your every craving, from a passionfruit tart to lamb & rosemary pie to their candied walnuts. Thankfully their price tags prevent me from making decisions my metabolism will regret, though it means I haven't tried much of their offerings. On a special occasion, I called in to order a small flourless chocolate cake (34) - an easy choice when choosing for a chocolate lover. I was rather excited, as I'd never been able to justify going to Jocelyn's Provisions "just because." The flourless chocolate cake is a dense chocolate cake with chocolate nuts, and toffee and praline bits. Not having looked at the pictures too closely previously, we were all impressed with the sugar lattice on the cake. Although a bit of a strange combination to have paired chocolate with a sugar lattice (flavour-wise), it was a lovely touch to the cake. It says online that the small cake is for 6 people, but we managed to make eight pieces, with all of us being satisfied (and even having some difficulty finishing the cake after dinner at Siam Samrarn). Needless to say, that was one delicious rich and dense chocolate cake! Even though I tend to not be a fan of chocolate cakes - or just cakes in general - if you want a scrumptious and impressive looking cake, this is the place to go!

They were showing off a few items on their menu and gorgeous cocktail creations. My favorite was the rum punch. It is refreshing and before you know it, you need a refill. The food was incredible. Wagyu beef sliders with guacamole. Yes! I also loved the croquettes they were serving. For desert, the brought out brownies bites and strawberry tarts. I could have had a whole tray of strawberry tarts. The staff were SO nice!!! Even with so much going on and trying to keep up with the demands, the made sure you had a drink in your hand and you were having a great time. This made a great impression on me. I haven't been to the area so that made it even more appealing to come back. If this is just the preview of what kind of food and drink Chester B&B will serve, I will definitely be making the trek back real soon and bringing my friends!

Seemingly as soon as they store opened under the hands of Damien Griffith, it shut for a little face-lift. While locals have been enjoying the fruits of a pop-up bakery while the renos were underway, the curtains were finally lifted this week in a series of test kitchen dinners and finally the grand re-opening on Friday. I was fortunate enough to attend one of the test kitchens (as a guest of the venue), and being on a table with other food bloggers meant we were able to sample almost 80% of the menu. From bar bites including a wagyu burger (my favourite), braised leek & bacon croquettes, fresh gravlax, creamy hummus with spiced lamb (which could have come with more than one slice of bread given the ample serving of hummus - it easily fed 6 of us), and a duck and mushroom pie (for the price, myself and others on the night agreed it could come with more of a ploughman's plate arrangement. The duck was moist and the side of pear chutney complimented it well). There's mains like the grilled barramundi (not amazing and a little dry in parts) or the lamb (this was the hero dish from everyone at the table). And, if there was still any room left there's a range of desserts by Jocelyn Hancock including my personal favourite the chocolate and almond cake with espresso creme fraiche. There's also a passionfruit tart, deconstructed eton mess and citrus cake. The space is beautifully simple with white subway tiles leaving way for the main attraction; the wood fired oven. Bakery by day, bar by night, this concept as are many born from Damien Griffith, is an ambitious one. But, if there's anyone in Brisbane to make it work it's this guy. It's novel to think that the same spot that can provide you a fresh loaf of ciabatta or sourdough at 7am can be feeding you delicious meals (either constructing a meal from the bar bites and sharing amongst a group or taking advantage of a main to yourself) and cocktails (try the Aperol Peach Spritz for a Summer refresher) at 7pm in the same day. I think this venue's versatility, location just a hop, skip and jump from James Street and combination of accessible fuss-free food with a focus on premium ingredients gives it an edge as the new "hot spot" in the area.

Right from the start, when you walk through the store there's always someone available to take your order. When I finally had time to return to New Farm, I made sure I paid a visit to Chouquette. Needless to say, I had great expectations to what they had to offer! Their website had given me a taste of what was in store, and I was excited for the extensive variety of bread rolls, pastries, and cakes. When I approached Chouquette, I really had expected it to be much busier, with people sitting around and conversing with French coffees - but I found it rather empty. The glass cases had a few sandwiches, a few cakes and pastries, with a few bread rolls in the back shelf- not at all what I expected, actually. The place didn't seem particularly French (though I really couldn't say what is and isn't) - no warm ambience, cold chairs and decor inside and out, and their offerings were very meager, and mostly not particularly aesthetically pleasing compared to what they displayed online. It was a bit of a disappointment to find that I couldn't find the variety of items that I saw online, and everything was a bit pricy. I did have the orange chocolate cake, which looked the most appealing, and was actually really rich and delicious (good for sharing), but I was sorely disappointed with their bread roll, which was way too dry. I'm not sure if I should have tried anything in particular- and if I just missed out on some of the good stuff, but unfortunately, Chouquette didn't leave me daydreaming about France.
