When it comes to taking risks in retail, some business owners take the "Field of Dreams" approach, believing that "if you build it, they will come." And one of those that has found success in this belief is Banneton Bakery at Ashgrove. When this tiny enclave of European pastries and freshly ground and brewed coffee opened its doors, I had fear of failure. After all, it's in a location that doesn't always favour the fortunes of retail tenants - others have tried and lost before - but it appears the Ashgrove locals were hungry for a boutique coffee cafe of their own and I'm happy to see its future looking bright. All of the coffees on the menu are carefully crafted to bring out their best and the pastries and other baked goods, including wood-fired breads, often have the locals lining up outside the door. The interior is small and cosy, but in my view the best place to enjoy Banneton's brekkie and other items is outside on their expansive side walk while watching the world walk, cycle and drive by along Waterworks Road. read more
