Smells like a typical Chinese fast food joint of oil and deep fried things. Can get smoky inside. Service was pretty quick. We ordered the wonton noodle soup. The wontons were good, but I felt like the really thin noodles and soup tasted like something out of an instant noodle packet. Finished it because we were hungry and it was super cold outside. At least the bowl was piping hot. Alright if you're in the area and try something besides the soup. Wouldn't go out of my way to dine here. Also, one of the workers was using a toothpick in his mouth and serving food. Not sure if that's sanitary.

Be aware they are cash only and you pay at the counter when you are finished. Overall it was a great experience and was so good we came back the next day.

I'm have mixed feelings about this place -- this is one of the only places in the city to get spicy hot pot without giving 24 hour advanced notice, which merits a lot of stars, but the food is only average. 3 stars, worth going to if you're craving hot pot (which I do, all the time. We asked at the hotel desk where we could get that and the person said at the desk where there were a number of restaurants within walking distance. We sat out. My Wife looking at menus. She settled on Oceania. Nice little place with outdoor seating as well as indoor. Ambiance is one thing, food is another. As stated before we just wanted something light. We ordered soup, for her, Chicken and Corn soup, for me, Hot and Sour and two orders of duck lettuce raps and a bottle of Gewurtztraminer wine. First the wine. We both like wine. The waiter brought the wine and opened it and asked who wanted to taste. I gave the honor to my Wife. She tasted, got a smile on her face and said "Excellent". When I tasted I smiled and said ""Alsace". Excellent wine with a reasonable price. Next were the soups. Being from NW Indiana, Chicago and its "China Town" is an easy drive. This soup was what, I would say the second best I have had and, it is my favorite Chinese soup, I have had many . My Wife stated that her Chicken and Corn was very good. Next was the lettuce wraps. When we ordered the waiter told us that one order was "just a taste", after all, they were on the appetizer menu. We ordered two orders. The orders have three lettuce wraps with the duck filling. For use the were perfect but keep in mind this was a light dinner for us having flown from Chicago. Don't think PF Chang's size, this is a appetizer. The filling was well seasoned and enjoyable. For us this was the perfect light dinner. Don't know about the other things on the menu but would think the quality would be the same and if you enjoy Asian or especially Chinese cuisine I would think it would be the same . Some of the things on the menu may not set well with Americans. Shark fin soup would be one of them. However, if you travel you should respect the taste's and cultures of others. This restaurant is worth the try.

Touted primarily as an Indonesian Restaurant, it also qualifies itself as an Indian eatery, as well as presenting the cuisine of Suriname - and doing it all under the umbrella of being Halal (which may also mean "Pradesh"). Now that's a lot of cuisines, all from different corners of the globe. But then I recalled my week shooting a movie in Belize a decade ago, and there was the connection. In Belize there seems to be an unwritten rule (or tradition) that was proudly announced by our liaison from the film office. And that was that ALL OF THE GROCERY STORES (the country only had small mom & pop places) in Belize City were owned and run by Indians from India; and the most popular food, being Chinese steam table take-out joints like we have in America (fried rice, spring rolls, noodles, sweet & sour chicken/shrimp, spicy saucy stir fried meat & vegies, etc...), and these places were always packed with lines around the corner. They were also ALL OWNED AND RUN by Vietnamese extended families. And the Vietnamese community mixed very well with the Indian families, having similarly imported ingredients from afar, as well as exotic flavors, similar spices, rice based cuisines, and they both cooked curries. Now for Suriname and Indonesia and how those two food cultures fit into the menu profile at Restaurant Riaz. I have eaten a lot of Indonesian food in my day, and its flavor pallet is very similar to India, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, all using coconut milk, peanuts, chili-peppers, potatoes, green peppers, fish-sauce, vegies, and similar meats and seafoods, plus blends of sweet and salty and spicy and sour; and all of them use rice. Now the thread that sews Suriname to these others is that it was also a Dutch Colony, as were Indonesia and parts of India (like Sri Lanka [Ceylon at the time]). So the Dutch created huge incentives for the Indians in their empire to relocate to the sparsely populated Suriname; and these Indians brought their food with them. So when I ate lunch in New York City at a Surinamese place in The Bronx, I was surprised to see the menu filled with Curries, Chutney, Samosas, Fried Pakoras, and everything was served with rice and Indian Roti, (an oily flour tortilla-like bread), often accompanied by a small bowl of rich brown Curry-Gravy to dip into. The food from Suriname was Literally INDIAN FOOD. Thus the culinary story of Restaurant Riaz and its diverse menu started to make a lot of sense. The Indonesian food complimented the Surinamese meals; and the Indian dishes blended seamlessly with the other cuisines. And the Roti and Curry-Gravies went perfectly with everything. Restaurant Riaz is a big success story in my book. I can't wait to come here again - and this time I am going to bring a whole bunch of friends.

There used to be an ambiguous Chinese restaurant situated at this location. Well, it wasn't really…read morethat dotchy. But this is Zuid and in Zuid people have money to spend and they don't want to spend it on stuffy Dutch Chinese fair. Babi pangang and Foe yong hai might have sufficed for grandpa & grandma and mom & dad, but the new generation wants modern and hip. They want small little nibbits and lots, cause sharing is caring. They want flavors that remind them of the flavors they experienced during their far east holidays. In Zuid, Asian fusion is the way to go. Thus about 2 weeks ago, a new Asian fusion restaurant opened it's doors in de Maasstraat. Not that there's any shortage of Asian inspired restaurants in the Rivierenbuurt, with Kaiko, Sapporo, Korean Garden, Hakata Senpachi and Orbit to name a few, only a stones throw away. I pass the restaurant regularly on my way to the appie for my grocery rants. The enticive menu lured me in this evening. By the way, their menu is a little more extensive then the one posted online. Let's see, the spider roll with soft shell crab, avocado, Japanese mayo and tobiko. Fried spicy dynamite roll with tuna and kimchi? Oyster cutlet roll with crispy oyster, red onion, almonds and tonkatsy mayo...hmmmm, interesting. Yaikes, €9 for 4 pieces?! Right..... let's just leave the creative sushi rolls for now and move on to the meals, shall we. Scallops with garlic topping, soft shell crab with garlic and red pepper, Malaysian curry sirloin with vegetables, steamed turbot with spring onions, ginger and doused with hot soy oil. Yahaa! The meals are on the small side here, so I was advised to go for 3 dishes per person. After viewing the prices, I only went for two dishes though. This prompted the question, only 2? You're not that hungry then?! Which lead me to respond with a hesitant yes. What I meant to say however was: Actually, I am very hungry but this is all I can afford right now. For a shared dinning concept, meals aren't economical to say the least (average pricesof ~ €8-13 per dish). I ended up going for the beef skewers with Malaysian peanut sauce and the Tuna Tataki with ponzu dip. Although beef skewers reminded me more of the Indonesian style sate rather than Malaysian with the sweet ketjap, they tasted okay. The seared tuna was also fine. I was expecting a fresh citrusy sauce as depicted in the picture on their site and was kind of disappointed when I couldn't detect any citrus flavors in the ponzu dip. What is that saying like? Never expect anything from anyone, because expectation always hurts. On the other hand, I was happy to discover only 2 dishes were sufficient to satisfy my hunger. So when on a budget my advise would be, go for protein! No, rephrase, ALWAYS go for protein, even when not broke. Even though the dishes didn't quite live up to my expectations, I think I will pay Michiu another visit. The food was good enough for me to still want to try other dishes on the menu, like turbot and the quail with goose liver. Yes, this place fits right in the neighbourhood with a high demand for contemporary fusion cuisine. Asian red is definitely the theme here. There is few seating outside as well. Prices are rather steep, but no more so then at Sapporo and Kaiko. Remember, this is Zuid and in Zuid people have money to spend. This newbie might do quite well....
