As much as I hate to write this the Truth must be known. After arriving back home from a trip to Montana the wife and I opted for a late breakfast. We decided to give the Golden Egg a try as it was local and we had other errands to run close by. Breakfast was still an option so we stopped. Service was quick, prompt and friendly. They had an option to seat outside in view of the water / harbor. My wife had the Ventura Omelette and I ordered the Eggs Benedict with a side of banana bread. Coffee n OJ quickly arrive as did our order . We were both very underwhelmed by what came out. Very poorly done, no flavor, portion size small, the hollandaise had no flavor at all. The omelette looked more like a kid scramble. Nothing for presentation at all was done. Not that it matters if the meal is good. But Damn. The only highlight was the Banana Bread. Hot Fresh and Moist. Good stuff. I will say this in closing. Your front end service is on point. The kitchen needs some attention to detail and seasoning in a BIG way. These were basic orders. My pup and I like to meander along the docks to the Golden Egg Café for one of their many omelets. She's partial to dry sourdough. I like the homemade feel of the Golden Egg's breakfasts. I pretend I live on one of the sailboats and just don't feel like cooking so off I amble. We take our brunch and our time on the back terrace. Sea gulls soar over the harbor and I stretch my legs in the shade of the parasols. My pup is given a water bowl by a smiling server and snuffles through the rosebushes. I usually get the mushroom, avocado and Swiss (not Jack) omelet alongside perfectly golden hash browns. The potatoes are tasty too. I alternate. How to know why? Either way, give me Tapatío. I wish they had an espresso machine. Instead, I order water and always say "with a lot of lemon." I'm given two thin slices. It's not what I mean by "a lot," but I try to squeeze out what I can. I flashback a few decades to my beloved Peruvian babysitter, Luz. She never let me eat lemons like oranges. Like I wanted. "It'll ruin the enamel of your teeth," she'd worry. I'd use the refrigerator door to hide behind while I happily sucked, puckered, and grimaced. Then I'd slink away. But back to my favorite Oxnard breakfast spot: The portions are perfect. My experience here was pleasant. The dood was great. I ordered eggs, hash browns with biscuits and gravy. Taste was amazing and portion size was appropriate. The picture I attached was of the OJ and chocolate milk they serve. I would consider that a small size , maybe even smaller than a medium drink. Each drink was $4.10 which to me is ridiculous for the size of the drink. A bottle of sunny delight or Donald Duck OJ is roughly 3 bucks. Although the service was very good and the outdoor patio has a nice view of the harbor, the food is nothing much to write about. The menu prices are way out of line, especially for the mediocre food they serve. Let's start with their prices. When I was considering where I wanted to bring my family for breakfast, I looked online for reviews and menu offerings just like everyone else. When this restaurant seemed be appealing (photos, ratings, menu offerings and prices), we decided to patronize this business. And that's when the disappointments started. Their lower menu prices online (http://channel-islands-harbor.com/Golden-Egg-Cafe) are grossly inconsistent with their actual higher menu prices just to lure you into the restaurant, I would imagine. When you sit down at a table and receive their printed menu, you'll see that many items' prices are nearly 50% and higher than what they advertise. A "bait and switch" tactic. As a former webmaster, updating content on a website is a simple task. There's no excuse for failing to update the prices online. The next disappointment was their French toast dish which was made with cheap, thin yellow thin bread that was flashed in a small amount of egg batter. No discernible egg taste to it. No rich French toast taste to it the we all know and love. Come on, this is an "egg cafe" where they should know how to make delicious French toast meals, and for over $11 for that plate, I felt ripped off. Another item we tried was their breakfast sandwich, which was greasy with only a tiny scrambled egg and fatty bacon strips without any seasoning or attractive taste. As I mentioned, the service was vey good. The servers were very pleasant, friendly, and attentive. However, look for a better restaurant and one that has some integrity in their pricing. I have to say I from the many times I've eaten at the Golden Café I was so disappointed this morning. They kept the coffee flowing but they overcharge for their pancakes a short stack is now $10.50 their website says $5.45. When I called and spoke to the manager, Jennifer, she told me that the prices have been upgraded to a new menu and the website has not followed because they can't reach the man the manages the website. My breakfast was $30 for a pastrami sandwich and a side of pancakes. Needless to say, I won't be eating there anymore. read more

Great service, average food! The Golden Egg is kind of like a small diner type place where all the servers know who you are. It has a very homey and laid-back atmosphere. However the food was not good: Tri tip-2/5, not good at all. I think it must have been cooked in the same oil the bacon is, and personally it made me feel very sick. Fresh squeezed orange juice-1/5, nasty! It tasted like a watered-down version of bad orange juice. Homemade biscuit-5/5, it was light and fluffy! It's the kind of biscuit that just melts in your mouth when you eat it! Yum!! Potatoes-3/5, the potatoes would have been such a great dish, however they were heavily salted. I couldn't even finish them with how much salt there was. Service-5/5, JoJo was such a sweetheart! She was very welcoming and made our dining experience wonderful! JoJo was quick with our order and kept coming back to check on us. **another reason why I gave them such low stars is because they charged $2.15 for an extra plate! And we didn't even ask for an extra place, JoJo saw that we were sharing and offered to bring us one! Seriously? C'mon guys! Not only was the food amazing as it was all homemade, but the staff is a huge part of the five star rating. If this is not a family owned business, they sure act like it is. Each and every server came by our table to ask if everything was going well if we needed anything and they did that for all their clients. If you are looking for a neighborhood café to become a regular at, this is the one! We are getting ready to move our boat to the marina right behind it.... We got sat right away but ended up waiting about an hour for our food to come out. It was good service but pretty small dishes. Filled with spinach, tomato and onions and topped with feta cheese, it is made of simple ingredients that come together so very well. The rosemary infused home potatoes were nice and crispy. They were even great the next day microwaved to reheat. The choice of breads to accompany the breakfast egg items includes the usual and also banana bread. Go for the banana bread, a nice sized slice served warm. My husband had the French toast which was served with real maple syrup.
