First pass at a lunch buffet
Jeff S.

So this review covers 2 visits... one that was takeout and one that was dine in. The first visit, the take out, saw The Wife and I getting a few of our usuals to go. This was our first visit to Golden Chef, so we were eager to see how they stacked up against the usuals. I ordered beef lo mein, and The Wife got chicken chow mein, and pepper beef. The orders arrived pretty quickly, as we were at the tail end of the dinner hour, and maybe only a couple of people were in the place. Staff was polite and courteous, always a plus. We got back home and unboxed. I found the lo mein to be good and different, in that it wasn't just swimming in the usual oyster/brown sauce that most places seem to feel is the obligatory base for lo mein.... even chicken lo mein. It was probably a little bland for my taste, but I could equally say it was 'light' compared to the usual lo meins you get in take outs. So, overall, I was satisfied with it. The wife liked her chow mein and pepper beef as well. She wasn't blown away by either, but she did say they were good, and didn't leave a lot behind. The second visit was a solo lunch trip because (a) nothing in Owasso sounded good, and (b) I suspected that Golden Chef had a little more to offer than what I had on the one takeout experience. So cut to noon, and there I am. The place itself is relatively small, maybe seating for 30. High ceilings, and lots of Asian Kitsch is present. The buffet that day had most of the usual Chinese buffet offerings, even though it was relatively scaled down, I'd estimate maybe 16 items in all. I dished up an egg roll, some lo mein, chicken chow mein, and a couple of other dishes I can't name, but looked pretty good. First plate was good, in fact better than I expected. The buffet items weren't lacking in flavor at all, and for whatever reason, were better than the takeout items from our previous excursion. Second plate was also good, and I tried to use it to sample the things I didn't get first round, such as the Honey Chicken and Pork and Cabbage. Overall, I came away pretty happy, and I'll tell you why.... It's my experience that most buffets these days are pretty much carbon copies of each other. In other words, the chicken chow mein is pretty much identical. No so with Golden Chef. There is a distinct 'made right here' vibe about the food that I greatly appreciated. This isn't 5 star, or even 4 star chinese buffet food, but it's pretty darn good for what it is, and that's good enough for me.

Order was definitely a to-go, which is good, because they don't have a dine-in option. Pretty extensive if routine menu, but I noticed they also served Pad Thai, and I've ever a fan of the dish, so I went with the shrimp version and a shrimp egg roll. Order time was about what I would expect for a Pad Thai, meaning it took a few more minutes than your usual Asian fare because it's got so darn many ingredients. Got my order and headed back to Owasso for dinner. It was still plenty warm when I arrived. First minor disappointment was no cilantro. Not sure how you do a pad thai without cilantro, or why. Luckily I had some, so I added it to my liking. Overall, the dish had plenty of shrimp, but seemed to lack the depth of flavor usually found in a pad thai. No notes of tamarind or that hint of fish sauce that's usually present. Overall, it was good, but only good. With a little more effort it could have been really good. The shrimp egg roll was huge, well cooked and full of flavor. I suspect their more mainstream asian dishes, chow meins, lo meins etc. are probably pretty good, and if I'm back that way and looking for an asian fix, I'll probably hit them up.

The inside of the place was not great. The front area is serving as a storage area. The food tasted ok, the flavor of all the food items was different from most other places I've been to. My thought was probably a different region where the preparation is different. I personally didn't care for it. Things were very oily. And my stomach didn't respond very well to it. My wife was fine but opted against taking leftovers for lunch.

You can get all the common dishes here but you can also get some unusual dishes that are very authentic. My grandson once ordered jelly fish. You can't get that at very many local restaurants. Another thing I like is that they have a couple of large round tables with lazy Susans. Our extended family sat at one of those tables once. It was fun putting the things we wanted to share on the lazy Susan and being able to spin it around and try what we wanted. It made for fun conversation talking about the different dishes. That was when our grandson ordered jellyfish. The restaurant is fairly small but the large tables make the restaurant good for groups. I think this would be an excellent place for a Yelp event. They have a lunch menu but you have to ask for it. It includes some of the popular Asian dishes for $9:95. They have smaller portions that come with a choice of soup or egg roll. Danny and I asked to see the lunch menu, but decided to order off the main menu. We split Crispy Tofu with garlic sauce and egg rolls. I liked the presentation of the egg rolls. They were cut diagonally and arranged nicely on the plate. The tofu dish was quite tasty. Next time, I plan to get Mei Fun. I have had it here before and loved the variety of flavors. The service wasn't terrible but it wasn't wonderful. We got our food in a timely manner, but we felt rushed to order and she didn't check to see if we needed anything or refill our water glasses. Service here has been excellent in the past. I am glad we came back to Chengdu and were reminded of how much we like it. We will be back soon.

I have had the opportunity to eat at some of the finest Chinese restaurants throughout San Francisco and have eaten at some of the best Chinese restaurants in Baja Mexico (I realize this may sound ridiculous, but Mexico has some of the best Asian restaurants). It may surprise you but the Chinese influence and culture is very rich in Baja. And, I like some heat! I am also somewhat familiar with the Schahuan region style of cooking recognized for being spicy and hot! I was visiting from Texas, my cousin and kinda fell upon this restaurant accidentally! Truly I forgot what all we ordered but I know I had the Green Beans and Chicken Lo Mein. This is one of the top three Chinese restaurants I have ever eaten at! The food was so authentic, just enough heat and delicious! I would love to return.

Our server was extremely friendly and quickly brought us drinks. Since this was our first time it took us a while to look over the menu which was quite extensive. The entire back page of the menu was filled with lunch specials which are priced very reasonably at $7.99. We all ordered from the lunch menu. I ordered Chicken lo Mein anda cup of Hot & Sour soup. The other people in my party ordered Sesame Chicken and General Tso's Chicken. All three of us were extremely pleased with the service and the quality of the food. My hot and sour soup was extremely delicious. It was chock full of sliced mushrooms and several pieces of tofu and it was almost a meal in itself and was served very hot. My Chicken lo Mein was equally delicious. The others in my party praised their meals as well and all three of us felt that we had finally found an excellent Chinese restaurant. I look forward to my next visit.
