I come here for the desserts, but when my mom came to visit, we came for the food. This is definitely North Indian food, but they have an idli/vada combo on the menu, and it was still really good! My mom had the thali, and really enjoyed it. They do simple counter service, but it's worth it to come for the food. The desserts are always good so take some home! read more

We went to have snacks in saturday evening at Gokul Sweets. We ordered Sev puri, Ragda Patties, Dahi Vada and Faluda. Our order came in 5-7 minutes and it was quick. I couldn't even eat half the bhatura with the amount of chole they gave. And the small container of chole had so much oil floating on top. We got garlic naan and it was the frozen garlic naan that you can buy from the Indian grocery store. It was thick and had no flavor. It wasn't even heated up properly. The paneer makhani had paneer that tasted like old, hardened paneer. The malai kofta lacked any spices. The quantity of the curries was pitiful considering the cost. TLDR: generous portions of food for reasonable prices, large and diverse menu, satisfying food. Vegetarian only. This Gokul is located in a giant plaza with a variety of South Asian stores (grocery stores, clothing, halal meat shop). There's a huge parking deck but it can get pretty busy so be cautious going on weekends! Gokul is usually pretty busy and attracts a bunch of different customers. Authentic and Delicious. I came to Atlanta for few days and wanted to check this place out for their 'Chaat' dishes. Chaat means snacks and in India you will find it all around. They had most of the snacks that you can find all over India. We came here for dinner and tried a few dishes and liked it so much that we came back for lunch and dinner the next day. I wish Knoxville or Nashville had similar places. We also took variety of sweets 'mithai' and no complains there. My wife, Peruvian, loves 'Malai Burdo' and I loved 'Besan laddu'. If you are in town or passing by, make sure to give them a try. Staff was nice and place was clean including the restrooms. I am a carnivore and I admit it. However, the pav bhaji I had which is basically a potato based curry served with bread. There's a huge history and background my friends illuminated me to but it was a lot and I was drinking and I had been kicked in the head prior to said explanation (was not related to my drinking though.) Anyway, the bhaji was really good, spiced slightly and I love onions and it's diced, raw onions are served along side it. The Dahi puri was also pretty good, tiny little puff balls filled with potato. I have to say that potatoes are certainly very versatile and I'm pleased to there are similarities between American and Indian fast food. Decor wise, it's very plain, pretty much cafeteria style and it's served as such. I guess presentation matters a little more to me than I thought. We got mutter paneer that was made in heavy cream rather than tomato, the Chole batura was excessively oily (like half an inch buried under oil) and the batura did not do well in carry out. The worst was the Mysore masala dosa. It was folded like a napkin and it stuck together, so not the crispy delicious dosa we were expecting. The potato filling which came separately had been partially burnt on the pan. 2- Social distance practice. The good thing is all employees are wearing masks. Sadly inside nobody follows social distance and there is no control of customers coming in with their masks pulled down. For my first visit ever, I'd say that this place was great! I tried their paneer masala, bhel puri (which by the way, was one of my favorites), spring dosa and the garlic naan. The bhel puri tasted very nice, it had a fresh sweet taste. Not sure how to describe it. That's the best I could do. Hehe. I am a huge fan of naan.. Any and every kind of naan! When I was out looking for a drink after dinner, I came across Gokul Sweets and really didn't know it existed. I mean, there's ANOTHER Gokul Sweets location not even a mile away in the Patel Plaza. This location is closer to Cherians. I came on a Thursday evening right before they closed, and man, the colors! There's just so many snacks that range from the hot pink to the bright yellow, and they all catch your eye. My drinks plan went out the window and I decided to start selecting sweets from their displays. Tonight I got: Badam Tarbooz x 1 ($9.99/lb) Pista Barfi x 1 ($7.99/lb) Coconut Barfi x 1 ($7.99/lb) Kaju Pista Katri x 1 ($9.99/lb) Dry fruit milk shake x 1 ($5.50) Running down the list of desserts, the Badam Tarbooz was delicious! It looked like a small little slice of watermelon, and guess what? It TASTES like a little slice of watermelon. I laughed when I bit into it, shared some with my mom and sister, and they both laughed too. It's not at all what you expect, but it's dang good! The Pista (Green color) and Coconut (yellow color) Barfi squares are both very rich, and flavor of both are also really good. The pista is pistachio and the Coconut is, well, coconut. Both have sliced almonds covering them. I think I preferred the coconut one more of these two. The Kaju pista katri is also a pistachio flavored snack that is almost a tiny diamond shaped sandwich. You can peel these apart and eat each individual layer. I think the pistachio flavor here wasn't as pronounced but it also wasn't bad. Still, this was my least favorite snack. The Dry Fruit milk shake was surprisingly really good. Very slightly sweet, and filled with finely chopped nuts including cashew, pistachio and almond as well as spices that made me smile. If you like a sugary sweet drink, this may not be for you, but luckily they have several drinks to choose from. In addition to all the sweets i'm talking about, don't sleep on their actual meals. Gokul sweets throws down with all sorts of traditional indian and not so traditional dishes. I tried none of them this visit, but due tho their tues-thurs specials they mentioned to me, i'll be back to try them. Located off of Dekalb industrial way, right across the street from Waffle house, just before you reach Scott Blvd., it's a small little parking lot but you should be able to find a spot. Even as an avid carnivore, Gokul is my favorite Indian restaurant. They specialize in South Indian cuisine- dosas, idlis, chaats, the works. The masala dosa is incredible; it's a fermented rice crepe filled with spiced potatoes and served with coconut chutney and vegetable sambar. The dish is so complex and bright. South Indian food is known for the combination of khatta mitha (sweet and sour) and heavy use of spices. We also get the Karachi chaat- think Indian nachos with a yogurt soaked gram flour fritter. It's an explosion of flavors and textures. The falooda is a must have as well. It's a rose flavored drink with ice cream and a variety of toppings- vermicelli, nuts, and basil seeds. The bhatura was huuuuge. I've had them served big in India, but this one was super huge. In fact, we were looking at the pictures of the food on the wall, and I chuckled at the picture of the bhatura because I thought they were exaggerating the size. But no, I was wrong. It was nice and soft and exactly what the chole needed. And the chole was really good. The dosa was large too, but that's to be expected. I was hoping it was going to be spicy, since it was mysore masala, but it was not. It was nice though. The coconut chutney was tasty but the best part was the sambhar. The sambhar was really nice. The mango shake was mangoey and thick with just the right amount of sweetness. This place also has like a bazillion fresh sweets. Reminded me of some of the shops in India. Wow. I'd heard about this place from family, and I'm glad I finally got a chance to check it out. There are essentially two "sections" to this restaurant: A "sweets" counter, and a food counter. The sweets-side makes a very colorful and delicious spread of a vide variety of Indian sweets. Everything from jalebi to ladu to peda and a few dozen other confections. You'll find a variety of delicious ways to give your pancreas a workout. And the "savory" side was even more impressive. The food was full of good flavors. Tasty and fresh. And here's how you know they're paying more than "average" attention to their food: There are cashews in the samosa. None of that peanut shortcut goings-on. In fact, everything they made seemed to adhere to certain "traditional" guidelines for North-Indian cooking. We sampled a few crowd-pleasers: The dahi-puri, bhel, saag-paneer, malai-kofta, samosas, puri, etc, all totally hit the spot, waking up the taste buds (and in some cases, clearing the sinuses). It is hard to understand why this place has scored so high on ratings. Oh yeah, most of the stellar reviews are not from Indians. I am sorry to create divisions here, but this is the kind of cheap food that always scores well with non-Indians and Indian people who don't know any bother (which would also explain the high rating at average places in Atlanta like Planet Bombay, Panahar, Desi Spice, etc) The food is incredibly oily - whether Chinese, thali, curries, breads - and the quality and taste are just average. I have not really explored the chaats, so I can't judge them. The selection of sweets is large and to my knowledge, this is the only place in Atlanta that sells barfi made with Splenda! Otherwise, I know my wife and I are burned out from mediocre experiences here and are anxious to explore other sweet shops in the ATL that also sell snacks and chaats on the side. read more

I have to upgrade Gokul to 4 stars. No drabby buffets here. Gokul's version of Bhel Puri, a musical dance for the tongue of sweet, spicy, sour, crunchy, and salty is simply incredible. Their Masala Dosa cannot be beat...there is no contender! If I enjoyed sweets, I would also be all over the Falooda drink but I don't want to add 1000 sugar calories to my carb heavy meal. I also love their Karachi Chat which is fabulous, crunchy, and full of wonderful flavors. My Indian husband and I LOVE this place! Don't let the slightly sloppy appearance of the restaurant turn you off. The messes are due to the incredible traffic that they get here and they can't keep up with it all the time. I went here last night as a try out to eat some vegetarian food. I definitely came only intending to eat something sweets as they were known for, but I decided to also go for the main courses. I got a masala dosa which is a flaky roll with seasoned potatoes inside of it. They had two dipping sauces, one that was made of some type of bean or paste and the second one was was of a cooler variety or one that was that was cooler to the mouth. I overall thought the potatoes wrapped in the wrap with or without the sauce was very underwhelming. I'm not sure if it was that I wanted rice, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The main attraction though was the sweets! Oh those pastry goodness delectables! They had some sort of watermelon looking treat and I'll tell you what that knocked the socks off me it tasted like a creamy watermelon bite in watermelon heaven! I guess it can be a good thing. My daughter and I ordered Samosas, Pani Puri, Gokul Fried Rice, Paneer 65. Gokul Fried Rice was sooooooo good. I wanted to order another one to go. Samosas were not my fave but the chutneys made it so much better. I am not a fan of chutney but Gokul Sweets has the best chutney ever!! I love the sweet tamarind chutney & mint chutney, I wanted to lick it off the plate. Pani Puri is good, got spoiled by eating them at The Palace which the lady already stuffed it for us. I've had the Paneer 65 before and that's what made me come back again. As for service, it's not bad. The lady takes your name and calls you when your food is ready. Besides their vast selection of sweets and [fried] savory indian snacks, Gokul sweets is a fast casual restaurant for vegetarian indian and vegetarian indo-chinese food. It was my first time and though i was worried about the 'no meat', everything turned out to be so good!!!!! Here's what i had: Pav bhaji: a saucy mixed veggie curry (ie. sauce like, no chunks of veggies) served with buttered rolls (like hawaiian rolls, yum), onions, lemon, and a hot mango sauce Mysore masala dosa: large crispy spiced crepe filled with a 'mashed' potato filling and folded. We got the potato filling on the side which is good for getting crepe and filling in every bite! Served with a cilantro yogurt chutney and small side of the tastiest sambar (a veggie lentil soup/stew). The crepe gets a little oily when it gets cold, but i didn't mind! Vada pav: 'mashed' potato coated in chickpea flour and deep fried, served in between with two buttered [hawaiian] rolls, tamarind chutney, and cilantro chutney --i called it served chikfila biscuit style. The flour coat was too thick, but the filling was amazing. So maybe this is a skip. Next time i want to try the gobi manchurian (cauliflower) and sag paneer (spinach and paneer). I only got the sweet treats behind th glass shelves (not exactly sure what they're called,) but they come in all different colors representing different flavors and look like rectangle blocks of cakes. The sweets here miss the kick of Indian taste, most sweets are very dry and taste stale. I got Barfi, Gulab Jamun and Chhena Murgi and they all tasted like the "S" word. I also asked them to let me taste and the lady at the counter denied (probably she knows after tasting none will buy the sweets?)
