Learning how to make sushi rolls
Zoe D.

We had such a wonderful time learning how to make sushi with Kyoko! I purchased tickets for my boyfriend and I to take this class together as a gift. It was our first time making sushi, and Kyoko was such a great instructor. She is very knowledgeable, patient, and charismatic. The sushi class is held in her home -- the environment was intimate and cozy but also very clean and professional. There were 7 of us in the class, which was a really nice size (two couples and one group of three). Kyoko walked us through all of the steps of making sushi, from making the rice and cutting the fish to assembling sushi rolls and handrolls. She has a ton of knowledge but made all of the information really accessible. It was also really helpful to learn where to source the different ingredients (from the rice to the fish to the cooking utensils) in San Francisco and around the Bay Area. We learned how to make the tamago egg omelette, how to cut different types of fish (salmon, tuna, and yellowtail) and vegetables, and how to cook shrimp. We made our own rolls with cooked ingredients and vegetables that we got to take home with us, and then we sat down for a dinner of handrolls that we assembled ourselves with all of the fresh fish, vegetables, and shrimp. Kyoko made two types of green tea and also made a delicious matcha white chocolate terrine for us for dessert. Everything was so good! There was so much food and it was so nice to also be able to take home leftovers. Kyoko also shared her recipes with us afterwards. This class was such a great way to spend an evening, and we learned so many skills that we are excited to practice making sushi at home. Thank you, Kyoko, for such a wonderful experience learning how to make sushi! We'd love to take another class with Kyoko and would highly recommend this experience to others.

Red bean dessert that Kyoko prepared for us!

My boyfriend and I signed up for a sushi-making class with Gochiso Kitchens, and we feel so lucky to have had this experience. Not only was Kyoko extremely knowledgeable, she is an excellent host, super encouraging, welcome, friendly, and easy-going. I learned so much in these few hours from her, not just about cooking but also about Japanese culture. I would 100% recommend her class! The class itself was very intimate, which was fantastic because we had a lot of hands-on practice. We learned to make sushi rice (the most important part of sushi!), prepare cucumber and vegetables, cut raw fish to make sashimi, make tamagoyaki (rolled sweet egg cooked on a pan), and de-vein and cook shrimp. After all the preparation work, we learned to make futomaki (wide rolls), which we got to bring home after the class, and we had a whole platter of sashimi and vegetables to make temaki (hand rolls). After the class, we had a great dinner eating our platter while making hand rolls using the sushi rice we prepared. It was really filling!! Kyoko also prepared a red bean dessert for us after the class, which was so delicious. Not only did she teach us to prepare this incredible meal, she also told us about all the different places we could purchase the ingredients in the Bay Area, as well as tips on how to look for quality ingredients. We feel very prepared to be able to make this meal ourselves at home. I cannot recommend this class enough; this is probably one of the most memorable experiences that I have ever done. We are already planning our next class with Kyoko. You will not regret doing this class if you love Japanese food!

Really fun evening learning to make sushi with Kyoko! She's a kind and welcoming teacher, sharing her culinary expertise and cultural insights. And now I'm ready to host a sushi party! Got home and bought a rectangular pan so I could make the rolled omelet from class. Enjoyed a great meal and took home delicious rolls for later. Highly recommend her class!

Getting ready to make hand rolls...

It's rare that you have an experience that exceeds your expectations -- and hopes -- in every way but Kyoko did just that for each of us at her class yesterday. Over the years, I've taken about a dozen of cooking classes. While most of them have been entertaining and included a good meal and recipes, very few have actually improved my skill sets or culinary knowledge in any substantial way. Usually, it's just been a fun way to spend a few hours with some tasty food and not much more. However, the sushi-making class at Gochiso Kitchen was far above and beyond that. At each stage, Kyoko shared valuable knowledge about how to procure and assess the best ingredients, store and prepare them properly, and present them. Her instructions were clear and very encouraging, and each of us enjoyed both the process and the results. She generously shared resources as well as ingredients that she had recently brought back from her travels to Japan. During the class, we learned how to make a wide variety of raw and cooked sushi ingredients, assemble rolls, and enjoyed a delicious and substantial meal afterward--with a bonus roll of cooked ingredients to take home! All of this would be enough to make it a cooking class that I would be happy to recommend to anyone but Kyoko's wonderful and warm hospitality made it even more special. Within minutes, she transformed us from a group of strangers to a relaxed group of friends preparing a meal together. Despite arriving solo, she immediately made me feel comfortable and relaxed. Kyoko has delightful enthusiasm, deep knowledge, and a fun and welcoming spirit. The space is open, airy, and inviting, and Kyoko's hospitality is perfection. Please support her school and give yourself the gift of a memorable and educational experience!

Such a wonderful and informative experience! Kyoko offers a private and comprehensive lesson on authentic Japanese sushi preparation and enjoyment. Loved it- would highly recommend :) great for couples and best friends!

Salmon hand roll

Came here for a work team-building event (sushi making!) on a school night. We were tired and weary from the workday, but as soon as we walked into Kyoko's kitchen, her calm demeanor put us at ease. She taught us all the basics and then some: how to cook sushi rice, identify and cut raw sashimi-grade fish (salmon, tuna, yellowtail), grill sushi-style omelettes, construct a handroll, arrange a pretty sushi platter - the list goes on. She sprinkled cultural and historical context into her methodical instruction, making for a delightful evening. This event was my second time at Gochiso Kitchen (I've also done Kyoko's Japanese home cooking class for a friend's birthday), and I thoroughly enjoyed myself both times. I'd come back again in heartbeat.

Each of us had a plate like this to enjoy!!

Took a sushi class and was probably one of the best classes I have taken. Kyoto was really knowledgeable and took us through all the steps from making rice properly, cutting fish, making tamago and rolling our sushi. We then sat down to enjoy our sushi! Really a wonderful evening! We plan on taking another class soon!

What a fantastic time! Kyoko was accommodating and professional. The class was interactive and fun. The food was delicious! Great gift idea or something to do with friends!

He's a great teacher, a fun person and was full of energy and kept the program moving. I've already been receiving multiple comments from the participants, all who enjoyed their time at the event VERY MUCH! Chef Carlos was AMAZING! It was 1AM in Madrid and you would never know it from his abundant energy, fun personality and professional teaching skills. His camera angles showed us each step and he kept the show at a high, entertaining level. We were all VERY impressed. Our Cooking Event was a complete success! Thank you, Debbie, Chef Carlos and everyone at Cozymeal!!! I'm so glad I found YOU, Chef Carlos and Cozymeal and we were able to share this experience with my colleagues. I couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. Very professional, very personal and very kind. The world needs more Debbies and Carloses!!!

booked Cozymeal's "Chef Rick / Latin Cuisine Made Easy" experience as a birthday event for my wife…read more It was advertised as a hands-on cooking class where we would create a four-course Latin-inspired meal with instruction. That is not what happened. There was essentially no hands-on cooking. My wife and I repeatedly asked how we could help, and the only participation we were given was washing lettuce and chopping a small amount of pepper. There was no meaningful instruction, no real teaching, and very little engagement. The ingredients were also very disappointing for the price. Store-bought tortilla chips were used despite the menu advertising homemade chips. The carne asada was supposed to include chimichurri, but it was seasoned with store-bought seasoning from a jar and no actual chimichurri was prepared. I contacted Cozymeal immediately with detailed feedback. After delays, they refused to refund the booking and offered only a 15% gift card toward another Cozymeal experience, which is useless because I would never use them again. This was an awful experience and Cozymeal did not stand behind it. I would strongly recommend avoiding this platform.

7/27/25 Zach…read moresurprised me with a ramen cooking class at The Story of Ramen. I lovvvve ramen (and noodles in general) so I was ecstatic for this experience. The Story of Ramen is located in the Mission so parking was a little tricky. We got to the general area 20 minutes before so that we could get a decent parking spot. We did the 4 hour advanced workshop where we learned about how to prepare the broth, marinated eggs, chasiu pork, tare seasoning and how to make the ramen. For that day, there were 5 other pairs. Our teachers Manville and Jeff, guided us through every step of the arduous process of making the perfect bowl of ramen. The workshop started off with a lecture about the history of ramen and the creation of The Story of Ramen. Of all the tasks we did, my favorite was making the ramen itself. After learning in detail how much work goes into making ramen, I appreciate ramen more than I ever did before. This was a great team building activity and something new for us. I highly recommend this and of course you get to eat the bowl of ramen you make at the end of the workshop!

Classes start at $70. Whether you're planning a cozy date night, friend hangout, or the perfect foodie gft, this ramen-making class is it.

Fantastic cooking experience…read more I came with a few friends to have a little bonding time during the holiday. We opted for the Tom Yum shrimp, Pad Thai with chicken, and Kanom krook cooking class. We were honestly very impressed with Sunshine and the recipes she took us through. The Tom Yum was pretty straightforward, but the pad Thai was slightly more difficult. We were happy to have her guidance as it turns out needs to be cooked quickly to get the right textures/ cooked efficiently. I've never had kanom krook dessert, but were pleasantly surprised at how good and how versatile it can be. The location was also nice and comfy. I would love to be a regular student of hers. She's a lot of fun. At first I thought that the ingredients she chose were so fragrant, it made me want to just take those home. Turns out I'd enjoy the whole experience. I highly recommend Sunshine's class
