Red bean dessert that Kyoko prepared for us!
Kristen K.

My boyfriend and I signed up for a sushi-making class with Gochiso Kitchens, and we feel so lucky to have had this experience. Not only was Kyoko extremely knowledgeable, she is an excellent host, super encouraging, welcome, friendly, and easy-going. I learned so much in these few hours from her, not just about cooking but also about Japanese culture. I would 100% recommend her class! The class itself was very intimate, which was fantastic because we had a lot of hands-on practice. We learned to make sushi rice (the most important part of sushi!), prepare cucumber and vegetables, cut raw fish to make sashimi, make tamagoyaki (rolled sweet egg cooked on a pan), and de-vein and cook shrimp. After all the preparation work, we learned to make futomaki (wide rolls), which we got to bring home after the class, and we had a whole platter of sashimi and vegetables to make temaki (hand rolls). After the class, we had a great dinner eating our platter while making hand rolls using the sushi rice we prepared. It was really filling!! Kyoko also prepared a red bean dessert for us after the class, which was so delicious. Not only did she teach us to prepare this incredible meal, she also told us about all the different places we could purchase the ingredients in the Bay Area, as well as tips on how to look for quality ingredients. We feel very prepared to be able to make this meal ourselves at home. I cannot recommend this class enough; this is probably one of the most memorable experiences that I have ever done. We are already planning our next class with Kyoko. You will not regret doing this class if you love Japanese food!

Really fun evening learning to make sushi with Kyoko! She's a kind and welcoming teacher, sharing her culinary expertise and cultural insights. And now I'm ready to host a sushi party! Got home and bought a rectangular pan so I could make the rolled omelet from class. Enjoyed a great meal and took home delicious rolls for later. Highly recommend her class!

Learning how to make sushi rolls

We had such a wonderful time learning how to make sushi with Kyoko! I purchased tickets for my boyfriend and I to take this class together as a gift. It was our first time making sushi, and Kyoko was such a great instructor. She is very knowledgeable, patient, and charismatic. The sushi class is held in her home -- the environment was intimate and cozy but also very clean and professional. There were 7 of us in the class, which was a really nice size (two couples and one group of three). Kyoko walked us through all of the steps of making sushi, from making the rice and cutting the fish to assembling sushi rolls and handrolls. She has a ton of knowledge but made all of the information really accessible. It was also really helpful to learn where to source the different ingredients (from the rice to the fish to the cooking utensils) in San Francisco and around the Bay Area. We learned how to make the tamago egg omelette, how to cut different types of fish (salmon, tuna, and yellowtail) and vegetables, and how to cook shrimp. We made our own rolls with cooked ingredients and vegetables that we got to take home with us, and then we sat down for a dinner of handrolls that we assembled ourselves with all of the fresh fish, vegetables, and shrimp. Kyoko made two types of green tea and also made a delicious matcha white chocolate terrine for us for dessert. Everything was so good! There was so much food and it was so nice to also be able to take home leftovers. Kyoko also shared her recipes with us afterwards. This class was such a great way to spend an evening, and we learned so many skills that we are excited to practice making sushi at home. Thank you, Kyoko, for such a wonderful experience learning how to make sushi! We'd love to take another class with Kyoko and would highly recommend this experience to others.

Getting ready to make hand rolls...

It's rare that you have an experience that exceeds your expectations -- and hopes -- in every way but Kyoko did just that for each of us at her class yesterday. Over the years, I've taken about a dozen of cooking classes. While most of them have been entertaining and included a good meal and recipes, very few have actually improved my skill sets or culinary knowledge in any substantial way. Usually, it's just been a fun way to spend a few hours with some tasty food and not much more. However, the sushi-making class at Gochiso Kitchen was far above and beyond that. At each stage, Kyoko shared valuable knowledge about how to procure and assess the best ingredients, store and prepare them properly, and present them. Her instructions were clear and very encouraging, and each of us enjoyed both the process and the results. She generously shared resources as well as ingredients that she had recently brought back from her travels to Japan. During the class, we learned how to make a wide variety of raw and cooked sushi ingredients, assemble rolls, and enjoyed a delicious and substantial meal afterward--with a bonus roll of cooked ingredients to take home! All of this would be enough to make it a cooking class that I would be happy to recommend to anyone but Kyoko's wonderful and warm hospitality made it even more special. Within minutes, she transformed us from a group of strangers to a relaxed group of friends preparing a meal together. Despite arriving solo, she immediately made me feel comfortable and relaxed. Kyoko has delightful enthusiasm, deep knowledge, and a fun and welcoming spirit. The space is open, airy, and inviting, and Kyoko's hospitality is perfection. Please support her school and give yourself the gift of a memorable and educational experience!

Such a wonderful and informative experience! Kyoko offers a private and comprehensive lesson on authentic Japanese sushi preparation and enjoyment. Loved it- would highly recommend :) great for couples and best friends!

Salmon hand roll

Came here for a work team-building event (sushi making!) on a school night. We were tired and weary from the workday, but as soon as we walked into Kyoko's kitchen, her calm demeanor put us at ease. She taught us all the basics and then some: how to cook sushi rice, identify and cut raw sashimi-grade fish (salmon, tuna, yellowtail), grill sushi-style omelettes, construct a handroll, arrange a pretty sushi platter - the list goes on. She sprinkled cultural and historical context into her methodical instruction, making for a delightful evening. This event was my second time at Gochiso Kitchen (I've also done Kyoko's Japanese home cooking class for a friend's birthday), and I thoroughly enjoyed myself both times. I'd come back again in heartbeat.

Each of us had a plate like this to enjoy!!

Took a sushi class and was probably one of the best classes I have taken. Kyoto was really knowledgeable and took us through all the steps from making rice properly, cutting fish, making tamago and rolling our sushi. We then sat down to enjoy our sushi! Really a wonderful evening! We plan on taking another class soon!

(back from Dec 2017) Kyoko was the sweetest hostess and super knowledgeable in her art. Not to mentioned, WOW, the food was incredible! For a quarterly team building opportunity, my coworkers wanted to do an activity that involved food and the art of creating. After some research we found Kyoko online. She sent our team a huge list of options in all categories: Cold appetizers, hot appetizers, soups, rice, main dish. After pre-choosing our menu, we met up at her personal apartment in SoMa and got to work! The space was good for a group of our size, 2-6 individuals. You stand around her kitchen counters while things are being prepped and end up eating at her dining table in the living room. During the preparation, there's not a lot of hands on experience but overall, she's super knowledgeable, gave us advice on how to store some of the sauces and ingredients, then followed up via email to share more recommendations around the city for supplies and food/drinks. Speaking about food, here's what we ended up choosing: -Grilled sea bass marinated in saikyo miso -Beef shabu shabu salad -Fried tofu and ginger rice -Mushroom miso soup Overall, everything was perfectly made! The miso made from scratch, the preparation of the rice, the dressings, all was made with love and you can really tell! Our tummies were full and happy by the end of the meal. After you finish, she cleans up and you go on your way. The overall experience was super positive and I'll definitely hire her again for another meal. I can see this as a cute intimate date night activity! Thanks, Kyoko!

Kyoko is the real deal. She is so knowledgeable about her craft: I felt we learned not just the techniques but the context about traditional ingredients and what shortcuts affect the flavor or not -- the "how" AND the "why". I learned so much! She designed a delicious menu around our original request for learning ochazuke with dashi broth, and cooking it together in her household kitchen helped make it seem very doable to repeat at home without fancy equipment or workspaces. Thank you for a memorable and educational evening! I will definitely be back to learn more.

That is not what happened. There was essentially no hands-on cooking. My wife and I repeatedly asked how we could help, and the only participation we were given was washing lettuce and chopping a small amount of pepper. There was no meaningful instruction, no real teaching, and very little engagement. The ingredients were also very disappointing for the price. Store-bought tortilla chips were used despite the menu advertising homemade chips. The carne asada was supposed to include chimichurri, but it was seasoned with store-bought seasoning from a jar and no actual chimichurri was prepared. I contacted Cozymeal immediately with detailed feedback. After delays, they refused to refund the booking and offered only a 15% gift card toward another Cozymeal experience, which is useless because I would never use them again. This was an awful experience and Cozymeal did not stand behind it. I would strongly recommend avoiding this platform.

7/27/25 Zach…read moresurprised me with a ramen cooking class at The Story of Ramen. I lovvvve ramen (and noodles in general) so I was ecstatic for this experience. The Story of Ramen is located in the Mission so parking was a little tricky. We got to the general area 20 minutes before so that we could get a decent parking spot. We did the 4 hour advanced workshop where we learned about how to prepare the broth, marinated eggs, chasiu pork, tare seasoning and how to make the ramen. For that day, there were 5 other pairs. Our teachers Manville and Jeff, guided us through every step of the arduous process of making the perfect bowl of ramen. The workshop started off with a lecture about the history of ramen and the creation of The Story of Ramen. Of all the tasks we did, my favorite was making the ramen itself. After learning in detail how much work goes into making ramen, I appreciate ramen more than I ever did before. This was a great team building activity and something new for us. I highly recommend this and of course you get to eat the bowl of ramen you make at the end of the workshop!

We made a total of 5 items - tamagoyaki (egg sushi), a cucumber roll, a rainbow roll, a smoked salmon nigiri, and a spicy tuna crab roll. The class was really insightful of how to roll sushi as a first time sushi maker, and all of the fish was really fresh. You were able to plate your sushi to enjoy after, or like me, you could just eat it as you made it.  Throughout the class, the instructor gave us helpful tips for success and went around and helped anyone who had questions. Afterward, we were given some mochi and miso soup.  At the end, I was full, although I do wish that we were able to make one more roll. Also, some of the ingredients in the spicy tuna and the sushi rice were prepared ahead of time, so we didn't get the full experience of making it. However, after the class, the instructor did email us photos they took through the class, as well as the recipes to try and recreate it at home. Overall, this was a really fun experience.

I live right around…read morethe corner from Civic Kitchen and remember being skeptical about another business in our neighborhood that was out of my price range. For a few years I received their mailing list, looking at all the amazing cooking classes they offered and never took part thinking it was too much to spend on myself. Coming out of COVID, I decided to bite the bullet and enroll in the 6 week Learn to Cook I series. BEST DECISION EVER! While the overall price might seem scary, you get your money's worth and MORE! It truly is an investment in yourself that greatly benefits your loved ones as they reap the benefits of your new culinary skills!!! When you break it down, the culinary tips and tricks you get, intensive small group instruction, a gourmet dinner complete with wine and your new cooking friends, as well as the occasional left overs, it really is a steal. Walking in the door, the kitchen is absolutely stunning. It is so tastefully designed with local Heath Ceramics, natural wood, stainless steel, Le Creuset, and the most beautiful kitchen tools. It is a treat to learn and cook from this kitchen. They use only the highest quality ingredients and help you learn about great places to source produce and meat in the neighborhood. Each week they send you the recipes and techniques that will be covered. I highly recommend doing all the recipes again after class at home as "homework" to continue to refine your skills and have experience substituting when what you're looking for might not be available. I've said a lot about the value and space but let me tell you about the PEOPLE! A fine team of people run The Civic Kitchen. Jen Nurse and her husband Chris are the fantastic owners. Jen previously worked with the non-profit 18 Reasons and is highly committed to the community. The culinary director Carrie is great and comes around during class to provide support and helpful tips. Frances is the incredible cooking instructor that is just a joy to watch and learn from. They also have a rotating dishwasher who each week has been super nice and friendly. Truly a grade "A" team, trust me, I'm a teacher. The course starts out sitting at a long communal table with snacks and Frances going over the day's recipes and techniques. The rest of the class is a combination of observation and working hands on with a few other people at your station replicating the dishes. All skills welcome and no one is left behind. Jen, Frances, and Carrie all float around to check on your skills and provide support. The evening concludes feasting on the fruits of your labor with fantastic wine. It's the best night of the week. Disclaimer, I went a little overboard with the photos but the pictures speak for themselves. Overall, come for the food and stay for the people!
