At least 20+ holes were patched and are now absolutely invisible in our color-drenched home. Overall, communication is excellent- everyone on the team gets cc'ed on emails, project managers visit the site regularly, and the onsite leads are extremely professional and detail-oriented. Arnoldo was our first project painting lead, his skill is unparalleled- watching him paint or come up with a painting solution for a tricky area is astounding. Adrian M was our most recent painting lead, and he is focused, efficient and clearly works very hard (the guy runs fast but is very professional in everything he does) and has a level of skill that is unmatched. Everyone is polite, respectful of our home and friendly. Phinney Ridge is tidy and clean, they take feedback well when things aren't quite perfect, and they are timely and efficient, and they solve problems. The cost and quality are commensurate, their experience is well evidenced and they always have solutions for tricky old house problems, plus a great warranty. I would happily hire again, and we plan to when the time comes to paint the exterior of our house in another year or two.

We hired Refined to paint our home's exterior. The initial consultation was quick and easy, and…read morethey provided an estimate right away. Since we wanted to do some additional work on the house, they were kind enough to offer a few estimates that included or excluded various options. Refined's pricing was very reasonable and a great value compared to other companies we considered. The painting process was extremely smooth and progressed quickly despite the work being done by a small team of two. The work finished within the estimated time. During the final walk-around, we found a couple of spots that needed an extra coat of paint. The team came back the next day and touched up all the spots we identified, as well as a few others they felt needed more coverage. The whole process went quickly and easily. We only had one minor snafu - payment processing. We paid our invoice via QuickBooks, but the company's system still showed us as unpaid for an extended time. We eventually had to contact QuickBooks to resolve the issue. However, the Refined team was respectful and gracious throughout the process.

We chose Refined Painting for our exterior because of all their five-star reviews, and…read moreunfortunately, it's a decision I will forever regret. The actual painting was good, and the crew was very nice. But they left our property covered in lead paint chips. We spent about three weeks cleaning up, and because we couldn't get all of the chips, we ultimately (by recommendation of the state) had to remove the top layer of soil from much of our yard, bring in new soil, and redo the landscaping in an effort to contain the contamination. When we first noticed the chips and contacted the owner, he said that his workers said they did follow protocol so he doesn't know how it could be so bad. Then he suggested we shouldn't be so upset because our property was probably already contaminated from previous paint jobs. They then offered to use a leaf blower to clean up the chips--which would have simply blown them into other parts of our property or our neighbors' yards. Afterward, I researched Washington's lead-paint requirements and found that there are specific training and certification requirements for work on homes built before 1978. My understanding is that the owner had completed the training, but Refined Painting as a company is not certified so the crew working on our home had not completed the training. This is so obvious now, given the outcome. I would also advise against using their carpenter if you need any work done on your house in preparation for painting. It was some of the worst carpentry work I have seen with wood not being properly aligned and bits reaffixed crookedly. Their project manager agreed that it looked terrible and said that they would fix it all but in the end only fixed some of the problems and just left the others and painted over it. Besides the pollution and the carpentry, the painting itself looked great, all the workers were very nice and Jose, the owner, is a great salesman (he could sell you your own shoe). But the way the lead paint was handled left us with a major cleanup and forever worried about the toxicity of our yard and our kids' exposure. Also the wonky carpentry work will need to be fixed. If you have a pre-1978 home and are prepping for painting, I would strongly recommend asking anyone bidding on your project for their lead based paint certification for their company and getting details about their lead-safe practices, containment, and cleanup guarantees. I wish for the sake of my children that we had.

Due to dry rot, this also required carpentry work. In just about a week, they replaced about 40-50 rotten boards, painted the deck wood and walls, did other cosmetic repairs, and ensured everything was moved back to where it was when they were done. Their communication was on point and they always showed up when they said they would. Matt goes beyond as well. He makes sure you're aware of all options on how what kind of finishes are possible and why any might be considered. He addressed structural issues caused by the original builders. He also approaches the project in a manner that ensures the rest of the house won't get damaged during the work (in this case, hoisting all the new and old wood off the roof via rope). Would highly recommend.

This job was nearly the entire interior of a 3000sq/ft home which included some very high ceilings and some other challenging areas. In addition, they had to work around our dogs, two kids who are home and our desire to have them work a full day, but still have our time to ourselves. We are not the easiest to work with but Atilio did a great job communicating with my wife and keeping the job moving, despite us adding some elements in the middle of the job. His crew are very friendly and do whatever they can to make you happy, AND were on time or early EVERY DAY for three weeks. That's a big deal to us and a rarity in the contracting world! My basement flooded so I called Color & Arches using the HomeAdvisor site which lists this business…read moreas based in Lynnewood, WA and has a photo of Shawn Moynihan on the site. It also stated it was able to do the work I needed to include mounting my flat screen TV and some other handyman type jobs I needed done. My walls had just been painted, the drywall and insulation was in place and I had just had the basement floor sealed with a marble finish for $4300. All Shawn had to do was put in the baseboards and hang the doors. I was leaving for a week so I gave him a key since Color & Arches is licensed, bonded and insured. When I returned 10 days later, I was handed a bill for $2132 and the work was only partially done. He had also hired his son to move furniture (very little since I hadn't moved in completely) for 5 hours and also his wife for 7 hours. He claimed to have worked 25 hours but had installed less than 45 linear feet of baseboard. It just got worse from there. I had invested too much time to fire him so asked him to pick up the pace. He seemed to work best when I wasn't at home and would charge me for times when he would forget something and go to the hardware store to buy it. Eventually, I told him I no longer needed him to build a closet and he was angry. He plastered two small holes in a bedroom that had been used to mount a TV but used so much plaster that the entire wall now needs to be repainted. He was not asked to do any work in that room at all. He didn't cover the vent when he drywalled so I must now have my vents cleaned and my furnace serviced. He cut the baseboards on the basement floor and left a 21 inch gash on my newly stained and sealed floor. The baseboards are poorly jointed and painted and must be removed and redone. They are not sanded. The putty job is messy and amateurish. I gave him the half gallon of A-100 paint that the painters had used the month before to paint the walls of the small room he was working on (the room is only 10'x18'). He then bought an interior paint that was the same color but a different type and it didn't match. He proceeded to paint large areas of the room and hallway with it and then told me that he would paint the entire basement for a mere $40 an hour. There was caulk all over my floor and toxic caulk left on the floor that I had to clean up before my dog could get to it. He drilled holes in my living room wall to mount the TV and missed the studs. He misread the directions on the wall mount and couldn't mount it so he had to return the mount. Now, I have a dozen holes in my newly painted living room wall and an unmounted TV. And then things got shady... He had me pay him through Paypal. He asked me to pay him through "friends and family" to avoid the fee. I don't use Paypal so I didn't realize that meant that I PAY A FEE! He then told me that he wanted to do me a favor by avoiding a paper trail. I explained that I had no problem with a paper trail and I needed receipts for my taxes. He assured me that he was indeed bonded, licensed and insured but couldn't produce paperwork but referred me back to HomeAdvisor, Angie's List and Color & Arches. He then billed me for another 23 hours (we are now at 72 hours and we still aren't done! And he's hired his wife and another friend yet again and billed me for their work!) and I fired him. I research the address in Lynnewood to discover that it's his wife's home address. I called Vernon Lovelace, owner of Color&Arches, who stated that he only has an Angie's List account: he doesn't have a HomeAdvisor account. He had no idea why Shawn would be doing this! He is willing to come to my home, see the work and make things right! That's the last I heard from Vernon Lovelace. I did discover that Shawn Moynihan has never been a licensed contractor in Washington State: EVER. I called in to Washington State Department of Labor and Industry and reported it. I also had my locks changed. I am out thousands of dollars. I am out money I paid to Color & Arches (or Shawn Moynihan) and I still have to have my baseboards removed and reinstalled, my vents cleaned, my furnace serviced as well as have my entire basement painted and my floor repaired. I am also out $300 for replacing my locks. Color & Arches is licensed, bonded and insured but I haven't seen a dime and HomeAdvisor supposedly stands behind their contractors but I haven't seen that either (this is a also a "Don't use HomeAdvisor" review). I wouldn't hire this company. They hire unlicensed contractors that are working illegally on the side and they are turning a blind eye to it. They are not standing behind their company's name or reputation. There is something very disreputable going on here. And the whole time Shawn was in my home, I had to listen to him go on and on about what a good Christian he was!! Unbelievable!
