Aside from the precarious journey getting there at the crack of dawn by bus(*), my 7:50am interview…read morewith Officer Timothy Carlson went smooth and straightforward. When you arrive, just sit down until someone comes out of the office and ask who's next. What really helped me find the place was someone's photo of Pillar #24, which helped to guide me to the escalators upstairs to the US Customs & Border Protection office. (*) The only bus that goes to the airport is the W-Line, which used to be the #20. The route has changed and the only stop at the airport is in front of the LEI stands. You catch the bus going back at the same place. Walk towards the airport. There's a sidewalk up to a point, then you have to carefully walk on a piece of land by a fence until you get to the roads that run by the Arrivals. Take a good look to your right to make sure there are no vehicles coming and walk across the road to the pedestrian walkway. Press the button and cross when the Walk signal lights up. The Pillar there is #29, so walk right to #24 and take the escalators up and go right. Whew.

Not knowing where it was, unsure of parking, and how hectic the airport can be made me anxious. This is how it went for us, including a timeline which turned out to be much less than what I read online: 1. Fill out application online. 2. After 1 day, we were notified we received condional approval and to schedule the in-person interview. They had available times as early as a couple days later. In order to get the times we wanted, our appointments were six days later. 3. On the day of the interview, ideally, you should go to the Terminal 2 Parking and park on the first floor, Ewa-side. Then you can just walk across to the main building. Once you get to the main building, take the elevator to Floor 2. Exit the elevator and head Ewa, walking between the airline check-in and roadway. After a 5-10 minute walk, depending on where you crossed over from the parking lot, you should see the sign below. 4. The interview only takes about 5 minutes. 5. About 2 hours after the interview, we received an email saying we received final approval. The whole process took only 8 days!!! It could have been even less if we took the first available interview time.

23 November 2020 My…read moremother has a long overdue appointment. Due to covid19 the facilities were locked down and assumingly severely delayed USCIS processes. Anyway, she was finally able to get an appointment. We arrived downtown super early and was able to find parking along the street. It was still early so we sat in the car and waited. There is a parking garage for the plaza with access from Pohukaina Street. Parking fee is $3 per 30 minutes. Nearer her appointment time she wanted to use the bathroom before going in so we walked around the plaza in search of one. She remembered seeing one in the parking garage during her last visit so we headed to the parking area. While there we did find a bathroom however, it was locked and required a code to access it, which we did not have. We went to the nearby guard station and asked them about access to the bathroom at which time they gave us an access code. USCIS has offices in Building 2, floors 4 and 5. Depending on which part in the process you are will determine which floor your appointment is. My mother's appointment was on the 5th floor so we took the elevator there; I'm sure there are stairs in case of emergencies, but I did not see them from the ground floor. Inside, the elevator opens up to a security guard checkpoint. The guards ask for your appointment letter (you can only access with an appointment and only the application is allowed beyond the security checkpoint) and then they have you place all your items in a bin to go through a scanner. You then go through a body scanner, similar to the airport scanners. Once through the security checkpoint, immigration officials have desks with security glass to process applicants. There is a small waiting area but, I'm not sure who that is for since only applicants are allowed back. I was only allowed back after Michelle, the official working with my mother, asked to speak with me. No photography or recording devices are allowed, and definitely no weapons even if you have a permit to carry. Both floors are heavily secured. There are three guards a both security checkpoint on each floor (& those are only the ones I saw) and there are security cameras watching every angle.

Ridiculous to find a long line that snaked out into the stairwell. This long line is for everyone with an appointment and not. This was changed from having 2 separate lines and the genius power to be decided to change to 1 line! An employee with a clipboard would come out to check everyone for their purpose of being in line. Because I had an appointment made with their online Aloha Q, he pulled me out, looked at my application and gave me a number. I then proceeded to the waiting area at 10:44am and, finally, was seen around 11:10am! Although, I brought my birth certificate, 2 proof of residency, eye check certificate from my optometrist so I don't have to get my eyes checked with their icky eyes check machine and current driver license, I was told unless I had changed my address or name, I only needed my current driver license, money to pay the fee and my eyes checked certificate! Oh, if you're already a registered voter, you do not need to re register by completing the application that's attached to the renewal driver license application! What! Grrrrr... Both the employee who took my application, current driver license and the employee who my fingerprints and photo were knowledgeable. pleasant and friendly. Now, I have to wait 6-8 weeks for my permanent driver license to arrive by mail. WOW...what an ordeal! Like having your teeth pulled and happy it was pulled...lol...

This review is specifically for the direct airport release and does not contain any information…read moreregarding the facilities if your dog has to stay there for a period of time as I have no direct experience with that. First, be prepared for a bit of a trip after your long flight. It's a bit of a walk past the gates, past baggage claim, near the international section of the terminal to get to the Airport Animal Quarantine Holding Facility. Thankfully, there is a shuttle that gets you pretty close (and then can just go to baggage claim after). And more importantly, and the reason why I am even doing this review, is because of the amazing and helpful staff who met us and the other animals from the plane at our arrival gate and took us through the whole process, showed the best locations for our animals to relieve themselves, and much much more. They made the chaotic first time experience extremely smooth. So thank you, Francis. The Hawaiian process to bring an animal here may seem daunting, stressful, and pricy. But they are doing their part to keep the island rabies free. Also, unlike many other places, while the requirements list is long and complicated, their website is extremely clear and easy to follow. Yes, you'll have to do multiple trips to your vet, do various very specific testing, procure documents and get original signatures (no scans or copies), but at least it wasn't convoluted and unclear. It can be a lengthy process but it's for a good cause and most importantly, the final step was made smoother and made the overall experience great having Francis assist us on the final leg of the journey.

Just follow all the directions on the site carefully and you won't have any issues. They weren't good at replying to emails, but surprisingly they answered their calls and were helpful (they sounded annoyed but still helpful). Only complaint is the lobby area, no place to sit and wait and very small, but I'm sure they have it like that on purpose.
