Jojo Bear passed Animal Quarantine and sleeps peacefully in his bed :)

Thank you for keeping Hawaii rabies-free! As a pet-owner, it may seem overwhelming at first, but the instructions for flying into Honolulu from California is very clear. There are a number of requirements to meet compliance but all of the information on their website is easy to follow. Once you have planned out each step for flying into Honolulu with your four-legged family member, you will encounter the helpful staff of Animal Quarantine. It's quite the walk from the gate, passed baggage claim, and near the international arrivals. This review is for the Animal Quarantine crew, working at the airport. BIG mahalo to the nice agents who handled Jojo Bear with care, kindness, and compassion. Thank you for checking his paperwork to ensure we were compliant to enter Honolulu :) We appreciate all that you do!

If you find yourself having your pet finish their quarantine here then you know it bites. It's awful, it's sad, you miss your pet, I missed mine for the 11 days he was there, you think how terrible it is that they are outside and cooped up for however many days, etc. Once you get past these thoughts you just have to take it for what it is. Yes this is awful but you can make it alot easier on yourself by keeping things organized and just coming into this knowing that it will get done. My dog had to stay here to finish 11 days (which is not bad considering some jave to do the full 120 days) we were not able to start the 120 day process sooner. When your dog arrives it is immediately taken to the temporary holding facility at the airport where they process their info and such and then they are either immediately released to you (if you did your homework) and if not they are taken to this main facility to finish their time. They do not really tell you if and when they arrived so you have to call and be on top of it. The place looks awful. The stalls have rusted tin roofs, the floors look rust in color and its completely outdoors. It sucks. There are rows upon rows of runs and it's heart breaking to see all the dogs getting excited when they think you are visiting them. The runs themselves may vary in size and each are about 2 to 3 feet apart from each other. In it is a small partitioned area so your pet can sleep on a platform (I recommend bringing them a pillow or bed so that it is soft). They have an automatic water bowl and that is about it. They usually get fed 2x a day and there are care takers constantly rolling by in little carts to tend to the runs. Considering how awful this whole situation is, the place is usually breezy. Bring a lawn chair or towel and just try to make the best of it when you visit your dog. We would always bring shirts that we wore to keep in his sleeping area and we would wash them and rotate them every few days. If your run is close to a hose you can even bring your own pet shampoo and towels and bathe your dog in their run. I would put some music on Pandora and just tried to hang out with my little one for a good while. My best advice is be nice to the people here, make yourself known (in a good way) and get to know your care taker. My dog has special needs (back issues, specific diet, and meds 2x a day, plus he is old) and believe me that guy was on it. Scott was our pups care taker and we would say hi all the time. When we asked he would actually take the time to tell us about what he has noticed and such and one day I even saw him come promptly to administer my dog's afternoon medicine. We sre so thankful for his care. As other reviewers have mentioned, yes the people at the front might not seem to be happy to be there, but just be nice and you'd be surprised at their kindness too. Overall, yes this is awful and undesirable. It feels unnecessary (especially if your dog has vaccines and past the tests), and adds up financially but it is what it is. Just try to have all your paperwork and affairs in order, ask clarifying questions and this should be a smooth process. Also, there are mosquitos so treat your pet and also make sure they are on a heart worm preventative....and maybe some bug spray for you ;-) This place is by no means a 5 star Ritz but I see the people working and taking care of the dogs. I wish I could just get more updates on my dog vs me having to do all the leg work. Also the way their schedule is written can be confusing because they have business office hours and then the general visiting hours which can get muddled together so be sure to get clarification. At the moment it seems you cannot vosit Mondays, Fridays, or Holidays. On the day of release I went during the business hours and everything went smooth. They were even there before the start time. Overall just glad everything went well. Good luck!

Very helpful staff on how to bring your dog from another country into Hawaii. Most information are located on the website, however there are some questions that were answered by the staff that were not available on their URL. Parking is a 5 minutes to walk away.

Hawaii's rules for bringing dogs to the Islands are complex and seem, at times, overly strict. Many dogs require some degree of quarantine upon arrival (though rules have changed to allow releases much more quickly than the past, including the potential for same-day). Knowing this, I had the image of doggie jail in my head. Reality couldn't have been further from the truth. They process paperwork quickly and efficiently - we had our release date confirmed not an hour after we turned in all of our dog's documents. The transport from the airport and the kenneling of our dog went very smoothly - all under the supervision of people who genuinely care about your furry family member. The kennels are of decent size, allowing your dog both closed-off privacy as well as an open-air run to catch some rays or socialize with their neighbors. The visiting hours are generous and the people who work there - from the office staff, to the folks who sign you in, and the pro's who work amongst the kennels and tend to the dogs - are all top-notch and super friendly. Our dog Maxie was very eager to get through his 10-day quarantine, but while he was there, he was well taken care of, which gave us significant peace of mind.

We had a bad experience despite our paperwork being valid and speaking to them to know and confirm no quarantines will be issued to our dog they lied. Even if you have

I am quite impressed with this place. Yesterday was my first time visiting my new 3 month old shiba inu pup, Penny, at the quarantine since she arrived there that morning. Believe me, I was devastated knowing that she'll be "locked up" for four months. I was crying the night before and crying on the plane while she was in front of me tucked away in the carrier under the seat. I was a complete mess! But when I visited her yesterday, I felt relief. The front staff was very friendly when it came to the paperwork and gave me instructions on how their visitation works. I was surprised to see that her kennel was very spacious and clean. I really like how there's a little "room" in the back of the kennel and inside is a platform for her where I can bring in her own bed. They have self filling water bowls for the dogs, which made me feel so much better because it does get hot out there even if they are under the shade in their kennels. While I was visiting Penny, the supervisor, Tina, approached me and said hi. I love how she knew Penny by name and she updated me on how she did when she arrived that morning. She told me that the dogs get fed 3 times a day and recommended how much food Penny should be getting since she is still a puppy. She even told me that she has a puppy in quarantine in the kennel as well. She was super friendly and I really felt more at ease. Although I would rather have Penny home with me, I feel comfortable having Penny there. I know that she's well taken care of and that she has her own space to play and run around. Visiting hours are not ideal as it only runs about three hours a day and there's no visiting on Mondays, Fridays and holidays.

Whaaa, no one's written a review for this place yet?? If you move to hawaii from the mainland, your four legged friend needs a rabies test, that takes 140 days to process. Start AT LEAST 4 months before your move, get all the things done, and your pet will be released immediately - 5 days from landing. But if you're like me and didn't know that far in advance, then your pet has to be in quarantine for the remainder of the 140 days (if it was administered on the mainland) or if you have them do everything, then the whole time. My kitty Kiko was one of those unfortunate cats. I don't remember exactly but it was around $1,500 for his whole 140 day stay. They feed him Nutra Max by default if you don't provide your own food. I provide my own, and a wet food and you can instruct exactly how you want them to be fed. I know picky cats even have their food monitored, they're very accommodating. There's a vet onsite that you can make appointments with too. My kitty had eat bites from all the mosquitoes and I had to get him "BIO-Spot On" spray to repel them. He also got a skin condition from the heat, but I kept up with his flea and tick medicine so he hasn't gotten any. His kennel is actually a good size! It's a full two square rooms, that my mom, dad, and grandma fit in comfortably (standing). He has a more outside room, the walls are all chainlink fence, and there's a bench there, he can see birds and the trees and grass as well as his neighbor cats. The entrance room, the door is just a fence, the solid walls are metal sheets, has another bench where his carrier is for sleeping, and a cool wooden ramp for him to climb up to his food perch which is about 3 feet off the ground. There's another ramp for him to go from there UP to his "kitty palace" which is just a square foot wooden shelf that's at the top, way above my head. For a cat, it's not bad. I mean it's no carpeted air conditioned room, but it's big enough that he could run around a little and climb from shelf to shelf. He watches birds and talks to his neighbors, he clicks at geckos too. He seems happy enough though he has had behavior changes I'm sure from the environment. The caretakers all seem very nice and call them by name. I mean it does look like prison, but they all sit at their fences and meow at each other, I guess it depends if you have a really spoiled kitty haha Idk how it is for dogs, though they have a much bigger, less fancy kennel, that they can run back and forth down. best advice I can give is get everything done as SOON as you know you're moving to hawaii to reduce or eliminate quarantine times and prices. If not, just visit your pet as much as possible, they do miss you a lot !

This is an awesome and clean facility !! My two fur babies were here for 30 days and the staff was great ! My dogs rabies paperwork got lost in route to the facility but since I had the original copies there weren't any major issues. My dogs had never been boarded before and did great . My dogs were well taken care of and always had fresh water as well. Their kennels were always clean and no bugs either . I also sent them a few days before me arriving to Hawaii and had no issues .

Thanks to some cartographers not doing their homework in the 1800s, this little enclave is the perfect way to get around the legalities of international shipping. As a result, there are lineups like crazy on Saturdays, as most package holding places aren't open on Sunday. Tips for getting to your package faster: a) Park on the street just before the border (Diefenbaker Park comes to mind), then walk across. You can see a mass exodus of people pulling dollies and wagons here. Quite hilarious, and there's a ton of parking. Customs is super quick when you're a walk-in as it's obvious you aren't stashing that new laptop in your jacket. b) If you are going across to MAIL a package (ie sell something), then the flat rate is $11USD per vehicle, regardless of the value of what you're selling. Something to keep in mind. I found this out the hard way once. However this doesn't apply to.. *drum roll* walk-ins. Again, the dolly/wagon wins. I've taken advantage of this piece of land several times, and each time the officers were very courteous. Totally wish I could say the same for Blaine. It's like they send all the nice ones here.
