My fiance had a popped tire while on the freeway last week. We were waiting for USAA when you guys showed up out of nowhere. I don't remember the name of the worker, but he was super cool and fast. Said we were his last one for the night. I had a blown out tire and had pulled onto the hard shoulder on the freeway near Wahiwa. I have never had this happen before so I was looking through my car insurance app and it turned out I didn't have road side assistance anyway! I was trying to figure out the next step when a man in a GEICO sponsored uniform turned up at my window and asked if I needed help. He and his colleague towed me to a safer spot, and changed my tire. Turns out they had just noticed my pulled over car and came to help. They were so kind and helpful, not to mention professional. I asked if GEICO would bill me or if I pay them and they said it's a free service from the Hawaii Department of Transportation. I literally feel like two angles showed up and saved me!!!!!!! I know one of the gentleman's names is Helepololei. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! There's a first time for everything and mine couldn't have gone any better. read more

What could have turned into a tragedy came out to be a flawless situation. Driving to work (town bound) just between LCC and Pearl Ridge cutoff my tire blew! I managed to slow down and get to the shoulder lane. FSP WAS RIGHT THERE! Right behind and ready to block traffic. I've never needed help from them before so assumed all they did was block traffic so you could do your thing. Anyways, I get out and start getting to my spare, pull it out and all the tools. Bernard comes and tells me to go to the triangle at the exit so we can change the tire and he will block traffic so I can get there safely. Once there I again pull everything out. He tells me that I didn't need to and he can do it. I was so impressed and so thankful he was there at the right time and was able to change my tire! A man hasn't changed my tire in my whole life! It felt so good to be helped by someone who genuinely wants to help and make a potentially tragic situation a lot better! Bernard acted calmly, efficiently and quickly! I am so glad to have FSP on our roadways! However the "SLOW DOWN OR MOVE OVER" law/rule really needs to be enforced! If it wasn't for FSP, I wouldn't have had any room to change my tire! read more

Been saved several times by these guys. No charge, won't even accept tips. Best government service ever! One time I called my insurance road service and the kid who showed up in his POV sedan had to make a few calls and consult some manuals before he could help. While I was waiting FOREVER for him to arrive, FSP stopped. Since I had already called a private road service, FSP couldn't help unless I canceled the call. Said I'll stick with the road service, too much huhu to call the insurance company, not knowing how long it would take for the guy to get there. Of course, the kid didn't refuse a gratuity! Lesson learned: Try call FSP first if you're on the H-1 from Kunia to Kahala. Moanalua Freeway, too. 841-4357. FSP does need to expand their hours, days, and coverage. But with COVID and rail sucking every discretionary dollar out of the state and county budget, it's a wonder they're still operating. Having to be on the side of the road in an emergency situation is terrible from the start! Then having to be in the mist of this with 3 littles in the truck who are scared is horrible! BUT OUT OF NOWHERE TRUCK #304 pulls up to help us out!!!!!! This kind man filled with Aloha walks right past us and looks into our truck and immediately addresses the scared littles was the best! My husband and I were on the way home from work (he picked me up in his work vehicle) and we blew a tire passing sears distribution center (heading west). I phoned FSP and within 5 min (or less) vehicle 305 pulled up. He unloaded his tools and starting working. Shortly after vehicle 310 came..both worked their magic and walla..back on the road again. My car broke down on friday on my way to work. I seen on saturday a brochure on my window that fsp was there on friday willing to tow my vehicle. I called them but they were closed till monday. Monday morning i called and a caucasion male maybe 40-50 years old talks with a hardcore pigeon accent. Probably thinks hes one of "the boys" from the west side. Before he approached my car he said "why didnt you call us sooner? Look now your window is broken and radio is stolen" and i was immediately suspicious because if fsp was closed till monday and someone was there on friday then how did he know? So i just responded with "i was working on friday" then he started asking me "was it a good radio?" And i just said "no it was a crappy one" because hes asking me too many bad mood questions. I took pics for my insurance and only the window was busted. After the tow i came back 3 hours later to get my car from the park it was towed too, now the windshield is busted too and thats not in my pictures. Bottom line, i have a strong feeling this guy broke into my car or called someone to do it for him. And was the one to bust the windshield because i wasnt cool with his question or one of the "braddahs" read more

It was one of those days you wish would be over just as it is getting started. The problem began when I had a meeting at the Hawaii State Capitol. I needed to drive from Kailua, pick up another person in Mililani, then go downtown. As I drove along the H1 through Aiea, I heard a noise, and my car dropped a few inches lower on the passenger side. As I realized my tire had gone flat and began moving from the center lane to the shoulder, the rubber shredded, forcing me to rapidly decelerate and pull over--thankfully no traffic was in the way. I would not be going to any meetings that day. I clicked on my hazard lights and called my auto club. The service rep explained that the tow company would not be available for 2-3 hours. I sat, fuming, with vehicles racing by, shaking my car, in the blazing sun, getting hotter and hotter. As I rolled down the windows to let in some air, it started raining just hard enough that I had to close my windows again. This situation was getting worse and worse! Just then, I glanced in my rear view mirror and noticed a white tow truck pulling in behind me. I jumped out of my car and asked, "Did the auto club send you? They said it would be at least two hours!" No, instead it was a knight in shining white armor, a member of Freeway Service Patrol (FSP)! I didn't know about FSP then, but I do now. FSP is an emergency roadside service provided by the Hawaii Department of Transportation. Besides helping stranded motorists, the FSP program keeps our freeways clear. This prevents traffic from backing up and causing longer commute times, especially during peak rush hours. Less time on the road also means savings on fuel costs and reduced emissions. As the FSP driver started removing the flat tire, he discovered that the bolts on my wheel were frozen, so he had to call for backup to get another tool. After the second FSP truck arrived, he successfully removed the flat, then discovered my replacement tire was also flat. Grrrr! Eventually he reinflated and installed the replacement tire, and I was good to go...NOT! After sitting on the highway shoulder for over an hour with my hazard lights on, my battery had died. Just before the FSP driver pulled away, I ran to his truck, screaming and waving my arms. He must have thought I was crazy and/or insanely unlucky, but at least he helped me with a jump start. OMG. At the end (finally!), he wished me a good day and asked me to fill out a survey rating the FSP service. FIVE STARS all the way! Thank you, FSP drivers, for being our heroes in the white trucks, making the roadways better for everyone. If you need FSP, call 841-HELP (4357). FSP is available from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, including some holidays. Services provided: changing flat tires, jump starts, radiator refills, temporary repairs, fuel (one gallon regular, no diesel), towing. FSP covers about 19 miles of freeway in both directions, including a 12-mile stretch along the H-1 Freeway, a 5-mile stretch along the Moanalua Freeway (H-201 and Route 78), and 2 miles of the H-2 Freeway from the H-1/H-2 interchange to Ka Uka Boulevard. Nothing but glowing things to say about Freeway Service Patrol. Today as I was driving home, a huge bucket flew out of a truck bed in front of me and it was too late for me to brake, especially going 60 mph. I was in the middle lane and there weren't too many cars around me, so I was able to pull over to the side of the freeway. I could hear the bucket scraping underneath as I was driving. I called Freeway Service Patrol and they were there in around 10 minutes. The guy was really nice and was able to remove the bucket. My car was fine afterward but he made sure that it wasn't making any more noises. Then he gave me a survey to fill out which I am going to mail back in. Freeway Service Patrol will help change tires, jump start your car, and help get your car back on the road all for free. It is part of the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation and I think this is probably one of the best uses of our tax dollars. Thanks again, Freeway Service Patrol! read more

I give Carl Martin at FSP 5 stars. He's a life saver, really professional and great customer service. He offered to tow my car to a safer place when I had a flat tire on the freeway. I told him the tow guy I called was on his way. He left but told me that he'll check back on me after an hour to make sure my car got towed. After an hour the towing guy still didn't arrive but Carl came back. Very thankful he came back. He towed my car to a safer place out of the freeway . read more

Freeway Service Patrol is a GODSENT. I was driving on the H-1 to work, when my car began smoking, shaking and engine just gave out. I was able to go right into the shoulder lane, turn my car off and keep my hazard lights on. (Scary situation when it's morning rush hour and cars speeding right past me). I called AAA and they told me a tow truck couldn't get my car for another 3 hours! After spending 15 minutes freaking out on the side of the freeway, and having one good Samaritan stop to see if I was okay, 2 guys from FSP came to my rescue! They not only towed my car, but Jon even looked at it and told me my radiator had a broken hose. They were my special angels who saved me on a really crappy day! read more

That would be a bad idea to no longer have FSP, Public Safety being number 1. If this does happen then opening the HOV lane to all the tax payers should be considered. My nightmare a couple of Thursday's ago: Heading to work on H1 on a weekday during traffic hour. Back tire blows out. Slowly veer into the shoulder only to find the rubber on my tire is completely gone and all that is left is my rims. (side note: I'm a typical princess whom does not know how to change the tires on my car or let alone a bicycle). I'm freaking out. I cannot be late to work! I call my husband and quickly tell him where I am and COME NOW! I call my work tell them I'm running late -- Meanwhile (not even 2 minutes after I pulled to the side) FSP dude in shining armor pulls up on his white horse err truck and quickly starts jacking up my car. HPD stops as well and opens my trunk and starts taking my stuff out to get the spare tire out. They quickly swap out my crapped out tire for a spare and repacked my trunk all in 10 minutes of busting my tire!! It all happened so quickly that I didn't get a chance to properly thank him! Not only did I get to work on time -- but it made a situation that could have sucked sorely into a raving review of FSP weeks later! Thank you Thank YOU~! read more

I had no idea this existed until today. I am so embarrassed to say, but I ran out of gas during rush hour traffic. Horrified at my stupidity and forgetfulness I waited for AAA to arrive (they are awesome too, but hey this is a free service?!) So the freeway service patrol showed up so fast and put gas in my car for free! Enough to get me safely to a gas station. This is like the Grace of God.. underserved.. I am so thankful for the kindness and everything. I was so embarrassed to inconvenience everyone. I filled out the survey with my gratitude expressed, but wish I could do something to repay them. H1E right before the aiea off, my car broke down. I was on the shoulder and within SECONDS, FSP was behind me (I was super lucky) and making sure I got out of the car safely. He took a look under the hood, got a second driver in front to tow, and we were on the Kaimakani st overpass within MINUTES! I know their job is to clear the freeways of road hazards as fast as possible, but to see it happen was awesome. Especially knowing what a hazardous job it can be! Thank you, FSP!! read more

Freeway Service Patrol is a GREAT SERVICE to Hawaii's communities. My nephew and I found ourselves in an unexpected predicament on the freeway just past the Waimalu off-ramp on 29May2020. Charly from FSP came to our rescue. He was a Godsend. He helped to secure my car so that it would hold up until we got to the dealership for repairs. We were in the HOV lane. All other lanes were busy, too. All of a sudden we heard a loud scraping sound. Cars were bearing down on our vehicle. We couldn't pull to the extreme right shoulder until a large black SUV came to our rescue. The driver of the blk SUV slowed the traffic down one lane at a time so that we could get to the right shoulder lane. He/she was Godsend. Then, all of a sudden, Charly arrived to help us. My only experience with them was not car trouble, but medical emergency in nature. I called 911 from the shoulder of H1, and tried to explain to dispatcher that I was on H1, headed town-bound, with H2 exit to my immediate left, Kam Hwy exit on my immediate right, gave the exit numbers from the signs, said I was right before the split under LCC, saw the twin towers just up ahead. Dispatcher "didn't know" where I was. (I'm sure all of you are picturing my exact location right now, am I right?!) Forever went by, I'm bleeding (in my mind, to death!!) no ambulance shows up, or anybody else, but in the side view mirror, I see FREEWAY SERVICE PATROL. I wave him off like, "no, not car trouble...go help somebody else", but he gets out, hands me a flyer LOL and I explain that I'm on the line with 911 trying to get an ambulance, but dispatcher can't figure out my location. I'm still on the line with dispatcher, he calls them too, we wait, wait, wait some more, then WOOHOO...a fire truck! Now we're getting somewhere, THEN the ambulance. FSP stayed the whole time. FSP...TRUE HEROES, nuff said. read more

I'm a person that, sadly, didn't know much about cars, so one day, on my way home from work, my car overheated, and I had to pull over. Thankfully, someone pulled over, unfortunately the only assistance they could offer me at the moment was the use of his cellphone, and he recommended that I call Freeway Patrol. So, he dialed them for me and not even 10 minutes, the guy was there. He looked over everything and saw that my engine was still good. It was also very helpful that he was very understanding and polite, and because it was blazing hot, he was quick. I want to say thanks again for such great service. read more

Wasn't expecting to utilize the services of FSP yesterday (nobody really does expect it..lol) but while coming down the Moanalua freeway Ewa bound, my car began to overheat and smoke...a LOT. Took the Halawa cutoff to see what was wrong and the engine was smoking when I came to a red light! Immediately put it in park and exited the car. After getting over the minimal shock of what was happening, my wife said "let's call FSP." I didn't even think of that, so I was glad that she brought that up and actually had the phone number in her phone. JACOB was the technician that showed up to render help. From the very beginning, he was the most pleasant and professional person--told us that he'd immediately tow us off the roadway to a safer location, which he did. From there, he grabbed two bottles of water, opened up the hood of my car, and started doing his thing. All the while, we were talking story and laughing. Jacob was our hero for the day, not only for assisting us with our car, but for making it such a pleasant experience. Pointed out that my radiator had a couple of pinhole leaks that caused the overheating. He gave us more than enough water for us to make it home from Halawa. We appreciate Jacob for his awesomeness and appreciate all the other FSP techs who do the job every workday of the week to ensure that drivers on our freeway are not left stranded when something unexpected happens.
