Awesome experience here as someone who had to do standby as an absolute last resort/emergency for my driver's license renewal. Im aware that standby is not a guarantee of service, but I took a risk at what I thought would be the least busy satellite city hall on a weekday morning and it absolutely paid off! Got there at 7:50 AM for 8 AM office opening. Stood in the designated standby line near the front door and was about 5th in line. I got serviced within 30 minutes of opening! Luckily I had all the correct documents and correct application all ready to go (printed, filled out, signed, etc). The clerks here are so friendly and accommodating. The population being served here are generally off-island visitors, elderly, and students. No issues at all, everyone was courteous and respected the rules. Waiting area is outside but its breezy, ADA accessible, quiet. Ample parking too within 100' of the doorway. Would definitely recommend all their services, scheduled appointment or not. read more

DO NOT GO THERE! Made an erroneous appointment (DMV appointment instead of licensing) by mistake, still we were there at 1pm which is when the appointment was scheduled. Was met by a Kayla who had absolutely no customer service skills and told us that we made the wrong appointment so we had to wait to be called, which could take hours or maybe not at all. The staff there are just awful, rude, and lack any type of empathy or customer service skills. My daughter and I ended up leaving. Although this location was very convenient for me, I would rather drive an hour to go to a different location moving forward. We had to renew a drivers license and transfer ownership of a vehicle during this visit to the city hall. We did not have an appointment booked but was told that we could be placed on a wait list. We were placed on number 6 and 7 on the list and told that we would be taken as the clerks are freed up between servicing appointment customers. We waited about 50 minutes before we were called and was able to complete our transactions that afternoon. If you choose to show up without an appointment, make sure it is after 2pm. This Satellite City Hall is located inside Hawai'i Kai Corporate Plaza. I feel like this is the best location because of the parking situation and how efficient they are. Staff is also friendly. The location isn't big as they only have a few windows, a check in podium and some bench seating. They do have lots of free parking outside in the shared lot with the other tenants of the building. Their entrance is inside the court area. Recently, I had to renew my Driver License and I wanted to make sure to do it before I forgot. I knew that making an appointment would be best so I looked online to see the earliest date I could renew my Driver License. All the town locations had appointments available the following month so I decided to go to the Hawai'i Kai location. When I went back to the site, an available appointment for the same day suddenly appeared. Someone must have cancelled so I immediately took that slot. I arrived earlier than my appointment time just in case there was a long queue. They were able to check me in right away and had me fill out the renewal paperwork while I waited to be called. Once I finished the paperwork, I was called up to do my eye exam and pay. They took my photo and gave me my temporary license. I don't think I was in there longer than 15 minutes! It can take up to 8 weeks to get the physical plastic card but it only took 3 weeks. In all of my Driver License renewal experiences, this was the fastest process ever so 5 stars for this location. read more

I had to renew my drivers license. Unfortunately I waited till I was just about a week away from expiration. So I went online since it's been 8 years since I last had to renew. I discovered that they recommend that you make an appointment. Unfortunately none were available for several months out. But you can walk-up. But it's not guaranteed that you will be seen. So I arrived about an hour early and I was first in line. Then they took my name and they saw those with appointments first. Thankfully they were fully staffed and I was called about half an hour after they opened. The clerk was friendly and the process went very smoothly. So the lesson here is as soon as you get the notice to renew make an appointment immediately. read more

If you prefer to go here, make sure you schedule an appointment... but even with that, all staff have AWFUL customer service. I came in person to get into the physical queue and the woman in glasses with short hair (picture attached for reference from another reviewer) pretty much tried to discourage my husband and I from signing in because it was their lunch break and they were short of staff. Honestly, the manner in which she delivered that message was off putting and not at all what good customer service should be. I understand that maybe the staff was "slammed" and busy, but regardless, your approach to customers could still be in a friendly tone, even apologetic, "Thank you for being here, we do have a really long wait time of close to 2 hours, so we will do our best to get to you" versus "Yeah, I don't recommend you wait. The person next in line has been waiting since 8am. We are short staffed and people are at lunch so you're going to wait a long time." Prepared all the required documents, but practically none of them were needed, including the renewal application. Apparently, the "system" was able to verify everything. This morning had to take my father in law to renew his license. He had a appointment 9:15am we got there about 8:50am checked in with the clerk at the front door. Social distancing is practice here and less than 5mins my father-in-law name was called . Before you know it he was done wow that was fast . Way before his appointment time we was out of there within 15mins. First time to this particular Sattlelite City Hall very nice with a Japanese garden to relax and wait for your number to be called. Sometimes it can be very stressful renewing your driver license so this was a nice garden w/ a waterfall. Next time I'm going to make my appointment here to renew my license because my father in law said he paid for his license and went straight to take a picture. Most places you pay for your license than need to wait to take your picture than wait again to get your temporary license . Not this place top notch fast and friendly service. I had to renew my license and it was over 6 months expired but Hawaii extended the deadline to 8/4/2021. I just walked in without an appointment on a Thursday morning. Of course it was dependent on how many people showed up for their appointments but I got in after about 5 minutes and it only took about 5-10 minutes to complete so I was out of there in 15 minutes. The workers there were extremely EFFICIENT! It was such a relief to get it done. There is still social distancing and masks. They only have 3 seats inside but not all were occupied. Even if you have to wait there is plenty of places to sit in the courtyard. Overall great. Thank goodness did not have to go downtown! I posted a picture of the required documentation (see photo) but not all are needed if you have shown them in the past. I visited the satellite city hall to get my vehicle registered from out of state! I booked an appointment in advance through AlohaQ and was able to be serviced immediately upon arrival (highly recommend). I was worried that I did not have all the correct documents as it could be tricky to have them all in order, however the staff worked very patiently with me. What you need to have when you go in to register an out of state vehicle is: 1. Driver's License 2. Title of the Car 3. Vehicle registration document 4. Document of car shipment from the states, containing information of your VIN and car arrival in Oahu 5. Failed safety inspection (which you can obtain pretty easily from any place that does safety inspections, I recommend the one near Mckinley Car Wash! That's it! I always drive the distance to come to this office since it's not as crowded as other locations and the staff is courteous. They have a table to check-in as you enter- whether you have an appointment or not, they ask what service you need as a courtesy so you wont stand in line for something that may need an appointment. A lady walks-in and goes directly to the express line even though the staff is asking her to check-in. She replies something about being here 35 years so I guess she feels she's different from others for that reason and doesnt need to follow rules. Sheesh. They did make changes since the pandemic so I dont know her reasoning of being here 35 years. Anyways, I just want to write that even with interactions like this, the staff there was and is very calm, servicing and patient. Right on! After hearing about the complicated & cumbersome requirements to renew driver licenses, I knew I had to acquaint myself of the requirements, as my license would expire in Mar. 2021. Over the past year, however, COVID has significantly changed the process to renew driver licenses. This review is based on my recent experience in renewing my driver's license at the HI Kai Satellite City Hall. As it turned out, renewing in person was a simple process! But what wasn't so simple was the preparation prior to the processing of my application. As with most people, I didn't pay attention to the requirements until I had to renew my license. Here are my tips: * Make an appt. online via Aloha Q. You are able to schedule an appt. from 6 months prior to your license expiration date, so do it early. Appt. times are taken up quickly (note that at this moment in Jan., the next earliest appt. is in Apr.!). I made my appt. back in Sept. 2020. Print your appt. document, as staff will ask for it. On my appt. day, I was surprised that there were people who thought they could just walk in, & without any appt., they were turned away. * Print the application form online so that you can complete it prior to your appt. You can also pick up a blank hard copy at any licensing location. * If you go to a licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist, have them complete a standardized form for your eye test. This form is acceptable for 6 months & allows you to bypass the eye test. * Have your various certified legal documents on hand. You'll need them to confirm your legal presence, legal name, date of birth & social security number. In addition, for federal Real ID "gold star" eligibility, you'll need 2 documents from separate accounts to confirm HI principal residence address. You can access an online listing of acceptable documents. I brought with me more than the required minimum documents, just in case (passport, birth certificate, marriage certificate, social security card, electricity bill, water bill, notice of driver license renewal.) As it turned out, I didn't need them all, as staff just took what they needed. This detailed listing was very helpful in that it specifically identified the various documents; however, it was difficult to find online, as I had to search for it. At the HI Kai location, there is clear signage posted of the acceptable documents, which is very helpful. * Arrive early for your appt. time. My appt. was at 8:30a. I arrived & checked in w/ staff at 8:15a. Staff asked me for various documents, which I gave them & then told me to wait outside. At 8:20a, I was called in for processing, i.e., payment by check, signatures, photo taking & fingerprinting. This process took only 10 minutes, & by 8:30a, I was out the door w/ a temporary license! * Verify name changes. Women have the added burden to document their last name changes, so make sure you have your marriage certificate & social security card, & that the names match; otherwise, you'll be told you have to request legal documents from government authorities before you can renew your driver's license. * Bring cash or check to pay for the renewal fee, which is dependent on your age. You can also use a credit card; however, there is a 2.35% service charge. I paid $40 for my license, which is good for 8 years. * Permanent driver's license will be mailed to you within 6 to 8 weeks. In the meantime, staff will give a color-printed paper copy of your driver's license w/ a temporary expiration date. * COVID compliance. Masks & social distancing are strictly enforced. You have to check in w/ staff at the front door & provide documents as requested. Only one customer at a time is allowed inside the office, so you'll have to wait outside until your name is called. Yes, it felt so safe, as I had the whole office to myself! * There is a mail-in option for 2-year & 4-year renewals only. I prefer in-person, as mail delivery has been delayed due to COVID, items can be lost in the mail & processing of the renewal can be incomplete if there are issues. As with all driver licensing facilities, this location runs like clockwork. Staff knows what they need & if you don't, you're holding others up. I found staff to be friendly & efficient, as they are trying their best to renew your license in a timely manner. Located in the HI Kai Executive Plaza w/ Roy's Restaurant, Outback Steakhouse & the HI State Federal Credit Union, free parking is available in the parking complex. Hours of operation are 8a-4p, Mon. to Fri. So I'm good for 8 years! Until then, I'm sure the rules will change 8 years from now, & my research will have to be done all over again when it's time to renew again. As I was leaving, I also asked about payment for real property taxes & car license renewal. What is there a sale going on here!? Nah it's just people renewing their license and paying for their car registration! Lol. I got here an hour before opening and there was a good amount of people already there. The line was pretty unorganized and I don't even know where it ended. I just assumed and hope where I stood was ok and I didn't get the stink eye from people. The workers come out a few minutes before (I think 10) to hand out application forms and walk in tickets. They kind of check if you have the correct documents and what I had (car registration and car insurance was sufficient). A lot of my paperwork is paperless and you have to get that printed you can't show it over your phone as they have to scan these documents. I mean seriously people get with the times and be more green. Lol! Anyway. You also need your birth certificate, social security card, marriage certificate to prove your name change, and divorce docs if you've ever been divorced and then two docs to prove your residency here. Phew. Hope you have them all- printed! Lol. It was a little peaceful up until a guy randomly came at 8 and stood in the front. Some guy behind me told the guy to stand in the back. I was lucky my appointment is 1130 today. I just went home, put on my face, and now I'm just waiting for my time to come. It's actually better if you make an appointment online but do so months ahead!!! Most people don't know this so be aware! You also need to get a gold star on your license by 10/20 or you can't travel. I actually have an appointment closer to my birthday but I didn't want to chance it and come back 4x like the guy behind me. Lol. I showed up half hour earlier than my appointment time and was helped. I was a bit shocked. But it was pretty painless as long as you had everything. They only take cash or check. I like to come to the Hawaii Kai Satellite City Hall location mainly when I need to transfer a title to a car when I sell, or buy one.......... or when I have to renew my driver's license. Recently, I noticed I needed to renew my driver's license, as it was gonna expire soon. I found out in advance you can actually renew your driver's license (6 months) in advance before your actual birthday (don't wait last minute like me, then get in a panic! Lol!). So it was around summer time (July 2017) when I realized that I had to renew my driver's license, and since there were some new rules implemented since the last time I renewed my driver's license, I realized I'd better go down here to see what sorts of ID forms would need in order to allow me to pass and renew my driver's license. I ended up using the following items for ID, in order so I could renew my Driver's License - 1. Current "U.S. Passport ID" (current) 2. A "W-2" wage & tax statement form (provided the social security number is printed on the document) 3. A valid Driver License 4. A current Vehicle Registration The only thing that happened to me, and threw me for a loop.............I actually flunked the eye vision test, as you have to have a minimum of 20/40 eyesight (uncorrected). To fix this, I had to go to Costco to get an Eye Exam, finding out my vision has changed a wee bit, due to my age. No big deal, just did what I had to do to get that "paper" to pass my eyesight vision test, then I went back to the Satellite City Hall to get my new Driver's License. Just an FYI............they will no longer give you a brand new Driver's License on the spot now (like the old days), they will punch a hole in your Driver's License, then give you this "temporary" license to hold for about 2 months. If I heard correctly, the nice City & County clerk told me that a new Driver's License will be mailed to me within 3 to 6 weeks? TIP for Payment - When you pay for your new Driver's License, the Satellite City Hall ONLY TAKES CASH, or CHECKS! They DO NOT take Credit Cards, or Debit Cards. I must say the clerks who worked at this particular Satellite City Hall were - Professional - Efficient as they can be - Knowledgeable A few tips before coming here, & standing in line - 1. Have all your documents ready...........don't waste other peoples time by taking up space in line (the lines can get long!), as you will get turned away by the clerk if you don't have all your proper documents on hand. 2. Fill out your paperwork before getting in line! People in line DO NOT want to wait for you to fill out the forms when you get to the customer service counter. Use some common sense gang! I always liked coming here because it was rarely used and virtually empty. But lately, due to the Real ID and star compliant IDs for Federal, it has become busy. You can get normal stuff done still pretty easily and quickly, but the license-related tasks require a bit more navigation. I'll get to that in a minute. Parking is pretty easy and the workers are generally nice. I think mostly any DMV, the teller demeanor is about the same. They control everything so it doesn't pay to be a jerk. I regards to the license renewal, I've added several tips. Here they are in one place. It's not necessarily in order of importance so please do read entirely. 1. You can make an appointment six months ahead. They are generally full of less than six months. However, check often because space opens due to last minute cancellations. This is by far the best way to plan and secure a position. 2. Go to the bathroom beforehand. The caretaker is not readily on hand to open the toilets. 3. Bring a snack or something to do while you wait. 4. Come early. At 0400 the gate wasn't even open and I was 1st in line. At 0500, on a separate occasion, I was 7th in line in line. 5. Make friends with those in line. They can save your space if you need to walk off. Better yet spend time with a friend. 6. Lastly, depending on your place in line, be prepared to be turned away or asked to come back later in the day. It could be as late as 345PM. They only give out 35-80 tickets a day. 7. Main points * This location isn't as busy as others * They open at 7am for appointments only. Walk-ins and motor vehicle paperwork starts at 8am * They accept credit cards now but there's a 2% fee. They suggest sticking with old school checks to avoid the fee. * Process: Line up outside, they'll call you in 1 at a time to check in (name and why you're there), then you wait outside until a window opens and they call you in. Luckily, this location isn't that terrible. I came here on a Friday morning because I let me car registration expire so to renew it I had to go in person. I was dreading it. I looked online and found out they open at 7. I thought, surely if I came right at 7 there wouldn't be much of a line. I was right, there was no line... because it was reservation only. I left, and came back at 8 when they open for walk-ins. The lady that helped me was pretty nice and actually really helpful. She informed me that I shouldn't pay with a credit card because there's a 2% fee and also if for any reason (like a global pandemic) I'm not going to be driving my car for a year, then I can bring my plates in and I won't be charged for my registration that year. Went there to get my licenses renewed and my two kids permits renewed. My wife had gotten hers done a month or so before. Based I her experience I suggest you go early, way before they open, and stand in line to get a number for your place in the actual line to get what you need done. In other words, we showed up about 7:15 am where there were people already in line waiting for them to open just to get that number. This is great, as it allows you to leave and not to have to stand there for hours on end waiting for your turn in line. You simply come back a little bit before the estimated time given to you along with your number in line. Also, they gave us the application forms to fill out so we'd have them complete upon our arrival. Suggestion; have all what you need prior to even going down there. I took an extra letter to prove residency and the clerk chose the two with the minimal personal information she had to scan into their records. This was very thoughtful. This place also feels more like a neighborhood location versus the one in downtown or on Dillingham Boulevard which is much more busy and hectic. read more
