I got a number of responses and a lot of them were things I didn't even think I would need but found extremely useful. I haven't done a half marathon in almost 10 years and I forgot how important it was to properly fuel myself for endurance runs. These days nutrition and electrolyte tabs aren't cutting it for me anymore. I don't want to hit a wall once I start hitting the 8-10 mile marker so energy gels have been helping me push through with ease and REI has plenty of them. They mostly carry the GU brand and HoneyStinger. I've been trying out flavors and found a couple that I like. REI despite their items being on the pricier side have great selection and quality gear. I was able to get everything I needed in prep for race day. I didn't encounter any issues with staff. It felt more like, "We'll leave you alone unless you need something." I'm totally fine with that. It's an upscale comprehensive sporting goods store with a good amount of items in stock. I was actually impressed with the women's shoe selection. They had more HOKAs in stock compared to Road Runner Sports in Wilmette. I know I could've easily gotten HOKAs online but I'm the type (especially when it comes to apparel and shoes) to want to test items out in person for fit. Had I known they had better availability with more colors in stock, I would've bought my shoes here. REI is granola and you'll need to bring your own bag to shop. They are officially bagless and no longer provide single-use shopping bags at checkout. Parking is easy since it's nestled within a strip mall. I was able to get a spot in front with no issues.

I waited. And I waited some more. I did some serious waiting five feet away in a red sweater. No acknowledgment. No letting me know it might be a while. But that would've likely stopped the upselling I started to see. So I turned me and my bike around and left. It's hard for me to be on my feet that long. That's why I bike. Dood has a right to be into his subject matter. Usually shops want you to feel comfortable and respected as somewhat of a priority, even if you aren't being directly pitched at the moment... it just was not a good vibe. All doods working there when I was in. Way heavy on the dood vibe. Captive audience syndrome. Sigh. Dood has to do what a dood does. I avoid places like this. New Bikes, new tune ups, this place is great. It's right near my sisters house and that is where we lived for the summer while our house was under construction. Anyway, bought bikes here two years ago for my husband and myself and since the place was so far away, we never got back to get our free after new purchase tune up. And here 25 months later, I figure it was too late. And it was... but they did the two tune ups regardless. What's more, when it was done you would have thought they would be trying to make some money off me with the muct replace spokes speech... or the grooved gears speech... but nothing. They said thanks for the business, everything is free of charge. Just like they said, I knew I chose this place for a reason. I took off a star only because they couldn't find my purchase anywhere. This is a great place to fix up your bike, to purchase a new one or to learn about what accessories you might need such as the type of light, more traction to your tires without compromising speed and the list goes on and on. The bottom line is that the staff, I deal mostly with Alan, are friendly, knowledgable, accommodating and sensitive. They also are funny, when you are relaxed with your situation, so there is a lot of positive energy. They just are committed for you to have a good experience and are quite flexible if you need to exchange something you had bought there didn't work out or to offer you a refund. They maintain an old school atmosphere yet are up on all the new technology. In my experience, this is a top rate bike shop. read more

This place is horrible if I want to spend so much money on horrible repairs I would go here where they not only charge outrageous prices you don't even get good customer service or quality parts this place is a disgrace to me and I will never be stepping foot in this place again if I could do zero stars I would NEVER go to this bike store If you have a brain it's just horrible no one should spend another penny on this place I got multiple repairs here and they kept breaking repeatedly and he charged outrageous prices to get it fixed this happened more than once a month so if your looking for quality parts DONT COME HERE! read more

I had an Amazon Local deal ($25 for $50 worth of stuff) and had a strong feeling that I was treated as a second class customer. I could be wrong, but I trust my gut feeling on these matters. After significant research into an issue I was having with my saddle, I went into Velosmith because according to the Selle Italia website they are a dealer participating in the idmatch (a "30 second" fitting procedure) and saddle test experience. The person I spoke with at the shop was friendly and helpful (although he was very quick to mention the $325 fitting that was a very important part of figuring out any type of saddle issue), but suggested that I contact their fitting expert to learn more about the demo program (same thing as the saddle test), so I left and contacted her by email. In that exchange the fitter was very nice, but pointed out immediately that the demo program is only for those who have gone through the $325 fitting experience. While I do believe there can be significant value in having a professional fitting. I just don't think I need one in this scenario because I've already run through most of the troubleshooting steps on my own to narrow down the potential causes (the Internet is a fabulous thing). I had really hoped that Velosmith would be that perfect boutique bike shop in a convenient location, and I would have been happy to pay more for that personalized expertise. But that wasn't the case. Instead of a premium experience, I was treated to a hard "mandatory" up sell (albeit in very friendly terms) for something I didn't want, or need.

I'm a bit of a picky shopper, and I compared to other bike shops in Evanston, and Everyday Cycles has completely won me over. Some of the great things: * Knowledgeable staff helps you choose the right things for your needs, whether fitting you to a bike or looking for an accessory. * Not pushy or overly sales-y. * The shop is small, so there is not a lot of product on hand, but you can tell that the products they carry have been vetted... It seems like someone working there has done research on the products and hand-picked the best products out there, so there may be only a few items to choose from, but they are the ones you would want anyway. They can also order items, of course. * Customer service went above and beyond expectations to address a minor manufacturer issue. * Convenient location Story time: The bicycle I chose to purchase (after a great experience trying out different bikes with different frame sizes) had a manufacturing defect on the rim. They swapped the rim with the same kind from another bike, which to me would have resolved the issue, because this other rim was satisfactory and would have completely evened out after breaking it in. (The original, defective rim was sent back to the manufacturer.) However, they went above and beyond and decided that they wanted to put a different, better model of rims on this type of bike, so they essentially upgraded my rims, which exceeded my expectations! I love the bike, love the shopping experience, advice, and expertise. I look forward to giving them more of my business.
