3rd Coast Cycle's owner pulled a bait and switch on us and almost killed my partner. We found the bike through an online listing. The owner had assured us everything was in order and ready to ride. When we took the bike out on the trails, my partner almost broke her neck on a downhill when the breaks suddenly gave out. We took it too a shop and found out that the wheels on the bike were not the original wheels and had been switched out. The rotors on the wheels were too small, leading it to quickly wear through the pads and suddenly stop working a couple hours into the ride. When we notified the owner, his response was "scary." Yes, incredibly scary. My partner could have died due to the owner 1) pulling a bait and switch and 2) not checking and ensuring the safety of the bike. read more

Spoke directly with the owner on the phone. Explained that wanted to rent an e-bike for our daughter to do bike the drive. Said cost would be "around $100" and a 25% discount if we used cash. In my head was thinking $75-80 with cash. When we returned the bike, said it was $155? To me that is not "around" $100. Reduced it to $135 but to me still not "around $100". I assumed since I was dealing with the owner that we could take his word. I guess moral of the story is to get in writing. Also, said the battery would last for 4 hours and lasted just a little over 2 hours. Not a great experience. read more

Stopped by and they fixed the gear sticking problem for $20 in 20 min! Very easy to work with them.

Went here 05/26 later in the day to get a loose break fixed and a clicking in my chain. Paid $35 and less than 2 miles later my break completely went out on a downhill where I almost crashed. I'm not sure what they did to my bike but it was worse off. Better to go to another shop. read more

I booked a 9am reservation, only to show up on time and be told that they were just opening and it would take them 30 mins to get our bikes ready. My friend and I are two different frame sizes (information I gave them), and when they gave us the bikes they didn't know for sure which was the larger one. I came here to get my bike tuned up. I had "The Expert" Comprehensive Shop Tune-Up" for $89. You don't have to schedule an appt if you are getting this kind of tune-up. You can show up anytime to get it done during their open hours. I would call ahead of time just in case to see if they would be available. It depends on how many bikes they have to repair or tune-up on that day. If they have a lot, then you can drop it off and pick it up the next day. I waited for mine and I went around when they opened on a weekday since it would be less busier. It only took 30 min since I was the first one. They text you when it's ready to be picked up. Wes does a great job and is honest with what needs to get done. I have to get my chain replaced but he said that I have a month more to use it before changing it. Changing a bike chain there costs like $35. They also have a warranty plan where you can go back and get your bike fixed at no cost if the repair didn't fix the issue in the first place. I'll probably have to do that for my left brake in the future. read more

Had a flat in my tire and it was past sunset and already dark out. Luckily I remembered this shop nearby and decided to get it fixed there. The shop stayed open past their closing time and waited for me to bring my bike in order to get it fixed. Happy to have it fixed and they made my night. I used 3rd coast cycles about a year ago when I got a flat nearby. They were able to take care of me quickly then. I dropped in randomly today because I was in a desperate need of a tuneup. They didn't try to oversell on anything and they were able to take a look at my bike right away. This it's not a local bike shop to me, but I come here because they have great service and prices are comparable to other shops. It's conveniently located right on the lakefront path. A friend of mine recently had a "tune-up" and had new tubes applied to his 1 speed bike from this cycle shop. As we embarked on our 2nd ride since the tune up, he noted that since the tune-up the handling of the front tire felt different than before. He suggested that this new handling must've just been a product of having a recent tune-up and he trusted that the bike shop had actually just tighten everything up and ensured the best bike condition so it felt different to handle. However, 20 minutes later my friend was riding along the lakefront path with me and when he rode over a small lip that is quite literally less than 2 inches in height, his front wheel completed detached from the bike frame and my friend landed face first into the concrete. Sustaining several injuries to his face, nose, and hands . We were going around 15 mph and yet whatever "tune-up" had been done clearly had changed the alignment of the front wheel and caused this crash. When my friend went back to the bike shop to discuss a reimbursement for some level of negligent care on the bike, the staff was unreceptive and further insisted that the wheel issue must have certainly been the fault of the rider. Which by my observations it was certainly not. I do not think the shop had conducted itself in a manner interested in keeping riders safe or wanting to retain future business. read more

I used 3rd coast for the chicago triathlon since I was coming from out of state and they were great. I reserved online but when I got there I realized I wanted a lighter bike and they were able to accommodate that with some shuffling. They didn't have to do that but they went above and beyond to make sure I was able to get a comfortable bike. They are also really close to the transition area where we drop off our bikes which was something I was worried about so it really takes a load off your shoulders.
