The colossal shrimp cocktail and champagne with the sound of water sitting in the very quaint courtyard setting was as close to being in Italy without the hassle of flying. In addition to breakfast during our two night at the Glenmere Mansion, we had two dinners: one pre fixe and the other al la carte. Fine dining was closed due to Covid. Our pre fixe was the write truffle menu. Delicious pasta, nice Tuscan steak and a semifreddo. Our second dinner, was less exciting, but good nonetheless. Service was excellent. The maitre d was very attentive and made some excellent recommendations, including the wine we choose. He was very concerned that we had a good evening and would periodically check in with us. If you want a full service dining experience, look no further than Glenmere. You receive the staff's full attention before you even sit for dinner. I was able to enjoy a tasty kir cocktail while taking in the ambience of the mansion. Not a bad way to relax after work. At dinner we began some salty rolls and biscuits with olive, rosemary, and cheese that I really enjoyed. For an appetizer, I tried a sunchoke soup which was very good. I am glad I went out on a limb to try it. My main course was red snapper served with fennel sausage and mini clams. It was very well put together. I would not say it was the best snapper dish I have ever had, but I am certainly happy I ate it. Every bite of it. I wish I had sampled dessert, but since I finished every bit of my meal I simply could not eat any more! I look forward to when I can dine at Glenmere again. read more

Went there to check out the area today on Mother'sDay, not to walk around, but a quick drive up and there was a man in a shed who came out...He looked unprofessional and had a attitude...instead of explaining why I couldn't go up, he said, with a tough demeanor, "Turn around here,"!!! I can't begin to say what a disappointment dining here was. We have heard nothing but raves from a number of people who have been here and will say that the setting is quite lovely. That is the high point! After much attitude and difficulty getting a reservation we were greeted upon arrival an hour early to have a cocktail outside on the porch. We proceeded to select a sofa that was filthy and covered with leaves and dirt. The table had spiders on it. We ordered drinks and even though they were only a few other guests it took 20 minutes for them to arrive. Our server spilled a few drops on the table and never wiped it up. We were not given any napkins at all. A few minutes before our reservation time we asked to be seated only to be told the table is not quite ready. Once they summoned us we entered an empty dining room. I'm still scratching my head over that. This place is overly pretentious and self-serving and that includes the staff. The menu was somewhat limited in the overall quality of food for the prices was mediocre at best. Our dishes were left empty and not removed until the next course was being served. There are a number of surcharges and supplements on the menu as well. What really Bothered me most was our server who is there for over 15 years and knew the food quite well did not tell us the specials until we Overheard him reciting them to the table next to us. Once he explained the specials to us he mentioned twice that there was a surcharge for the lobster tail out of the shell being served with a piece of fillet beef. He asked if the surcharge was OK without ever telling us how much it was. Seeing that the Foie Gras was a $20 supplement which was reasonable I failed to ask how much the surcharge was for the special. When I got the bill I saw that they charged me an extra $100 over the $95 three-course meal for the special. Shame on me for not asking but that is obscene.And double the shame on him for hiding that price.We also were told on the phone that we were welcome to bring a special bottle of wine for a special occasion with the $75 corkage fee which is higher than 99% of New York City restaurants and this is a remote faux tuscan castle replica that is clearly worn around the edges. When we arrived they told us that we were not allowed to bring in any liquor and after reciting the fact that on the phone we were told we could it took two hostesses to give us the approval after conferencing that seemed like a congressional caucus.When we got the bill they were going to charge us $100 for the corkage but after a slight protest they demurred and graciously only charges $75 for the privilege of mishandling a bottle of rare wine. But the best is yet to come After paying the bill and putting up with the amateur staff ranging from the hostesses to the servers to the invisible piano man we got up to leave and no one and I mean NO ONE said goodbye or thank you. We walked through three rooms to leave with it not a soul or staff member in sight and went outside to try and retrieve our car. However you guessed it-there was nobody there for five minutes we waited and then I said fuck it this is absolutely obscene and went over to the key rack and found my key and pulled out to leave this ridiculously self-important expensive and quite mediocre "Mansion". Also after being informed that a jacket was necessary I was only one of the handful of men wearing them since the dining room included an array of Hawaiian shirts and suburbanites dressed in provocative clothing. I honestly don't know how this place survives and is recommended. Maybe it was an off night for the staff, for the servers, for the kitchen, for the cleaners, for the furniture and obviously an off night for the valet. Can't wait to never go back so go at your own risk. read more

We are here in frogs end tavern Saturday evening. The service was terrific; friendly and courteous without being overbearing. The menu is simple pub food, but they did have specials. For an appetizer I had the General Tso's cauliflower. It was delicious!! It was crunchy with the right amount of heat. The giant garlic prawns were also tasty and lived up to their name.... they were giant. For dinner I had a special of red snapper over root vegetables in a coconut basil sauce. It was also very tasty. My husband had the grilled cheese which was delicious and served with fresh, homemade root chips; not from a bag! The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is for two reasons... for dessert we had the ice cream sundae. The chocolate sauce was served on the side and was very thick, almost chewy like it may have been old. The whipped cream also tasted like it was from a can and not fresh. It was very dense. The second reason for the lack in a star is because it was a very cold night. The frogs end tavern is small and cozy... beautiful inside with a hugh fireplace. It would have been wonderful to have the fire going alongside our table. I would definitely like to go back. It's the type of place for a romantic getaway, hidden off of the road, beautiful, quaint rooms to relax in, a spa and pretty grounds. read more

I have to preface this review by saying that it is almost entirely based on an incredibly negative experience we had with ONE person at Glenmere that almost completely, single-handedly ruined our honeymoon stay. I said incredible, because it truly is - even in retrospect, it still makes my blood boil. I booked us for 2 nights, Nov 14-16, at Glenmere at the rack rate of approx $1300/night for their suite with 2 fireplaces as a mini-moon splurge to unwind from our wedding weekend. I called ahead of time to inquire about the rooms with the fireplaces since that's what really sold me and upgraded us to the above mentioned suite with 2 fireplaces. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a charming and professional butler. At check in, my husband jokingly remarked on the rate of the room and asked if that included anything. We were not told it included breakfast (I did later check on their website and fine print does say rates include breakfast, but it would have been nice and expected that it would have been communicated to us at check in). We were ushered to our room (not the one with two fireplaces), and my husband asked if they could move us to a room with a balcony (and a fireplace) - they did so without skipping a beat, as the butler added we were the only ones staying at the property, so I made no mention of the first mistake. Once in our new suite, I asked about turning the fireplace on and we were told they were not working. The butler said, "you weren't told they weren't working?" No, we were not. Incredibly disappointed and exhausted, but not wanting to ruin our honeymoon, we ordered room service and indulged in the split of Champagne they left us with a nice, handwritten note acknowledging our honeymoon. I mention the nice details because I really want to be fair and put our story out there and let you decide.. The next morning we went to the reception and encountered the woman I'm basing this review on. I asked her for recommendations on where we could go for breakfast (she never once said we were entitled to a complimentary full breakfast). My husband was hungry and opted to get us a table at the restaurant while I spoke with her. I told her I was really disappointed at the fireplace not working in our room and explained that was the main reason we splurged on Glenmere for our honeymoon. Her reaction completely baffled and infuriated me. She shrugged her shoulders (literally) and gestured to a silent, "oh well". When I pressed and said that we should have been told prior, she said, "well, it's not in our policy to refund money." She said, the best she could do was offer a discount towards a future stay. I could not believe this response!! I asked for the owners business card and told her I needed to think about how I was going to handle the situation and suggested she do the same. Again, not wanting to ruin what was left of our stay, I downplayed the whole thing to my husband but told him I was unhappy with how she handled everything. We went out around the town of Warwick, which was both charming and quaint as were the people. We had dinner off property and came back late. The butler that evening was very sweet and said we were missed. My husband asked for a late checkout the next day and he agreed to extend it 2 hours to 1pm. The following morning, we were greeted by this same woman and she pulled us aside to tell us that she was aware that we had been given an extended check out of 1 PM but that since we were the last couple on the property and they needed to get some plumbing work done before the winter they wanted to start that as soon as possible and wanted us to be checked out by 11 AM. At this point I just had to laugh! My husband said, we will not be checking out a minute before 1pm and you should be ashamed of yourself for asking us that. I just could NOT believe this!!!! We were in our room, and I kid you not, this woman was calling us at 12:58pm!!!! We checked out at 1pm as was originally granted to us, completely disgusted and outraged. Our mini moon was successfully ruined by this person. I've never been more angry in my life. We've traveled the world over and this establishment is not worthy of a single star, let alone Relais and Chateau status. The premises are beautiful but the lack of service and outright insults are just not worth visiting at all - especially with the crazy expensive rates. You're better off skipping this one altogether. read more

I am a Certified Travel Agent and Certified Meeting Professional for 25 years and have been to Italy 9 times so I am picky when it comes to travel, hotels and anything Italian....I own a travel agency and tour company called The Little Wine Bus, Hudson Valley Wine Tours and events and The Little Beer Bus, Hudson Valley Beer Tours and events and we pick-up guests up all the time from this gorgeous gorgeous hotel and they always rave about how happy they are at this property and in aw. This is as close to Italy as you will get anywhere in New York State. The mansion is gorgeous and takes your breath away when you arrive. The elegant high end brunch is my favorite! I treated my 90 year old grandmother and she was blown away. The spa is fit for a king or queen and is certainly amazing. The grounds are so pretty and the staff is friendly and helpful. I LOVE the beautiful piazza inside and outside and always have and always will recommend this remarkable 5 star property to all my weekend and overnight guests looking for something memorable, beautiful and special. read more

Pardon my lack of literary eloquence and irrespective of what transpired with the owner Alan S and Mrs. B, a culinary experience, Glenmere is NOT! It takes more than money to create fine dining. Alan, come down from your ivory tower and get down to darth. Let's summarize a few of the quirky rules created by this mom and pop establishment. First off, it there are more than six guests, dining in the main dining room is off limits due to its size. Acceptable! Now, if more than 6 persons are in the party, you must eat outside. Fair enough! But, it must be inconvenient in December. Oh, I see, parties of over 6 must wait for the milder months. Another rule of the restaurant is that if you dine in the loggia overlooking the fountains, gardens, etc., you relinquish your right to bread. Bread or biscuits are only allowed in the gorgeous main formal dining room. So, if you are more than 6 guests, don't count of bread, rolls or biscuits. Ignore the bread plate and butter knife. We were a group of 8 professionals that consider themselves "foodies" and have had the good fortune to have dined in some of the finest restaurants in New Yorik Philly, Rome, Florence, Venice and Paris and in all fairness Glenmere is not a top draw restaurant that they perceive to be. My wife and I clucked at Jacob B's veal chop ( I think it was a veal chop.) smothered in greens. Looked like it had been left under a tree in early fall. I had requested grilled salmon medium rare and of course it came out well done. By that time, Alan S was in no mood to hear my complaint. In fact, he was never seen again. Must have run out for a bite to eat. Come on boys, you probably think dining in Palm Beach is a culinary experience. My I recommend The Gazebo in Jupiter, Florida Let's revisit Mrs. B. Let it be known that no one in her party spoke disparagingly of her. This is a total fabrication. If it weren't for Mrs. B, their friends from Westchester would not have driven such a distance to be so disappointed. Unbeknownst to the establishment, it was Mrs. B's birthday. Quite memorable. I have stayed here twice and eaten here more times. For what you get, I have to admit that the price point is a bit high (almost twice the cost of even The Saint Regis in NYC) but there aren't too many places like Glenmere so it is in a unique category. The rooms are luxurious and the grounds and pool area are top notch. I think this is in the perfect location because anywhere else and nobody would ever be willing to pay $700 per night. This is on the level of The Breakers of Palm Beach but without the nice location. However to escape the craziness of Manhattan, I am sure hedge fund types, lawyers and those who want a quiet escape to the country would gladly give up the beach for the grassy fields of Chester. After my first stays, I decided that it was nice to soak in the atmosphere of a Tuscan mansion through dinner and lunches vs. Staying over in the future as I could stay at The Bedford Post Inn, an equally nice Relais et Chateaux property 40 minutes outside the city for 1/3 the price of Glenmere. If you are looking for an escape to the countryside and want to hang out amongst a fairly affluent crowd of guests in a luxurious setting, Glenmere is the place to do so. If you are looking for a more relaxed and less pretentious vibe in a woodsy village setting, I'd say Bedford Post is the way to go. I will admit the times I stayed at Glenmere, several well heeled but loud and pushy 'New Yorkers' were staying there and after a few bottles of wine they made the place their own with shrill laughter and booming voices. And of course two young Wall Street couples who had money to burn were being loud and obnoxious the second time which forced us to retreat to our room for the night vs. listen to dueling boasting as the couples tried to one up each other's stories. For the most part though, youll run into affluent older couples looking to escape the city and have a classy romantic weekend away. (And you can't get much more away than Chester, NY!) I felt the biggest flaw of Glenmere is the pretentious attitude of the staff. Understandably, they deal with an affluent crowd who expects that. I was pretty put off by the attitude of the staff which seemed to always make you feel as though you had to justify yourself. From the central casting secret service security check point at the front to the David Spade-esque 'Aaaaand youuuuu are??? ...' front desk greeting, I felt as though I was at one of those cocktail parties where you are constantly being sized up. A bit off putting. The dining atmosphere is great ... The Italian palazzo courtyard is amazing and one is transported to an Italian villa while dining there. I would never eat inside the restaurant if the weather was nice. You go here for the atmosphere ... The food I find is always just kind of okay. I've never had anything that completely blew me away but at the same time I've never had anything I didn't like. (Other than the fact the mixed drinks, although creative, are very weak.) If you go here for the food alone, you may be disappointed. To the reviewer on here who in one review claimed to be a food expert because she recognized a few names the chef had dropped and reportedly trained under and then trashed the restaurant in another because they wouldn't accommodate her food allergy specifically ... Get over yourself. The world does not revolve around you and honestly, it sounds like everything she knows about fine dining came out of a travel network TV show. With Glenmere, you won't be disappointed if you stay here looking for an escape from the city and don't mind paying 3 times more than you would at similar places. (Although admittedly, there is no place quite like Glenmere). To the locals and those who seem a bit bitter about the high price tag ... If you want to experience a Gold Coast mansion overnight on the cheap, check out Oheka Castle on Long Island. You won't get the same amenities (pool, spa, etc.) But you can stay at a Gold Coast mansion for around $350. At Glenmere you are paying for the white glove service and Relais et Chateaux brand, which pretty much is the top of the line. Glenmere gets my stamp of approval although the staff really could take the snootiness down a notch. read more

If you are planning a romantic night for two or a small group for cocktails and dinner, and the ambiance is most important than this place is ideal. However, if you are looking for a place with food that will make you melt, then maybe not. This is the most beautiful place I've seen in New York state. My words would not do justice in describing how unbelievably breath taking the scenery and the estate grounds are. The main building is reminiscent of a spanish courtyard, and when you arrive, you can choose to sit in either the library or seating area that overlooks the terrace and the lake beyond. Then the staff takes your drink order while you relax. I had the best espresso martini of all time. (Trust me, you can go wrong with these, but this one was perfect.) Unfortunately, as much as I'd like to give this a five because of the ambiance, attentive staff, and wonderful martini, I feel the need to give it a four. This is because the food was good, but it was not up to the caliber that I expected. I had the ravioli with beat filling for appetizer, which had a very tart taste that was almost a little too much, and for dinner I had the Arctic Char. The fish was cooked perfectly over top of delicious spinach, but the side of finely diced pineapple with a glaze was extremely pungent and a little too much. It was still good, but a little overpowering. And then for desert I had sorbet which is always good. read more

We were treated to the third degree upon entering the grounds at the gate by a very aggressive and rude security guard. We told him multiple times we had appointments at the spa. Finally he apologized for stopping us and let us pass. It was very very off putting and not a nice entrance. Spa and treatments were lovely. The staff and facilities were top notch. I had a massage and facial. Both were very good. The relaxation library was just that. Again, very attentive staff in the spa. We really had a nice time there and I would go again. Off to the Frogs End for late lunch. This was another low note. Our waitress and the security guard need a lesson in etiquette. She was not knowledgable about beverages or food on the menu. Very blasé and little personality. Once our food arrived it was extremely mediocre. Salads were fine. My steak, ordered medium rare, turned up med well. Asiago fries were served on a tiny plate and soggy and not good. Price points were all over the place. $10 fries, $36 steak, $23 chicken. All just.... Eh. We were disappointed. Overall I would probably go back to the spa, but for a luxury hotel I expect more for this caliber resort. Food definitely needs improvement and training the staff properly in basic hospitality would be a plus as well. read more

Glenmere Mansion is a very beautiful estate that is definitely a nice change of venue from the usual fare. There is a guard at the gate and valet parking at the entrance. The lawns are beautifully manicured and the view is fantastic. The inside of the mansion is just as beautiful. We ate at the Frog's End Tavern so I can't speak on behalf of the other restaurants or lodging. I ordered a Limoncello martini that was one of the best martini's I have ever had. The prosciutto chickpeas fritters were terrific. I ordered the Italian Blt which was a little too heavy but it contained smoked meats so maybe that was my fault for ordering it. My husband had the Angus beef burger and loved it. The chocolate cake was nothing too special but the cappucino was very good. Some of the wine and coffees were a little overpriced but overall it was a really good experience. read more

Once inside the dining room, we were treated to a wonderful meal. Every course was delicious. The prix fixe menu is nicely balanced, with a good variety of choices for each course. Although, honestly, I doubt there would have been a bad choice to be found. The wine selection is impressive. The sommelier was knowledgeable and helped us make the perfect selection for our table. We're a resident of Chester and were very excited that a new place in the area was opening up. Also living in Manhattan, where we get the opportunity to frequent many "fine-dining" restaurants, we were curious to see what a $3,000-a-night "hotel" had to offer in Orange County, plus, it was a short 10-minute drive from the house. Boy was this place a huge disappointment (not to mention, turn-off). Glenmere Mansion indeed proves that with enough investment, you can buy a great décor - there's no debate about that. The place is indeed posh, even opulent - in fact, it's quite dazzling and flawless. And the scenery is fantastic - obviously, tons of money was poured into the place. It shows, and it's breathtaking. However, with a closer look, things come apart at the seams. Glenmere lacks that extra-refined level of service and culinary mastery that one would expect with those surroundings (and prices). The service is very plebian - I know that sounds really harsh of me to write - but when you walk in and are surrounded with this much luxury and then you're greeted by a bartender who has zero personality and is watching the news on the flat screen behind the bar, the whole experience just deflates. I am in no way singling out just the bartender. It's everyone, and I don't believe it's their fault - I think it's just upper management who is not showing them how to pay attention to detail. If you're a "foodie" type - you will surely leave disappointedly. I wouldn't say it's a disaster, the food looks pretty on the plate, but it lacks finesse (oh yeah, and flavor too - one plate after another comes out bland, how is this possible?). We've visited on at least a dozen different occasions and have sampled the entire menu: everything is perfectly, well - average. Nothing against the chefs, but please taste the food and season it appropriately before it comes to the table. The last time we were there was in January on a really cold night. I was taking out a close friend from Manhattan who works at Wylie Dufresne's "WD50" in Manhattan as their master sommelier. I wanted to impress him with the place so made reservations at the more informal bar area since the formal area is a bit stuffy for my taste. I specifically asked for the table nearest the fireplace. When we arrived, the place was empty, and remained empty the entire night. (They inform you that it is "imperative" to make reservations, even at the bar - I find this a little pretentious when the place is in fact, dead.) I also noticed how cold it was inside. The fire place was just as dead as the hotel. I inquired why they didn't have a fire roaring (c'mon, it was January in Orange County, the whole point in reserving a table near the fire) and was told by the bartender (who was also our server at the table) that "they don't put a fire on when no one's really around." That was their answer. We were a party of four, and we were planning on spending around $600-$700 on a birthday dinner - guess that doesn't include fire wood. So we sat there, in a super quiet, empty, and cold room; no fire in our near future, with a bartender/waitress hovering around our table - listening to every word of our conversation (and even interjected at times!) - the whole experience was so lackluster that I gave up on the place and cannot really recommend it (although I wanted to be a regular of the place and recommend it to our out-of-town friends). The place has a certain unfounded pretentiousness to it. They make it sort of obvious that they only want to cater to the folks who are staying there overnight, and not really for the people who live in the area. I find this bogus because there are plenty of "locals" who have cash to burn at a place like this, yet their place sits empty half the year. The staff/service is awkward. The owners need to take their entire staff over to a real 5-star hotel, like The Peninsula in Hong Kong, or the Dorchester in England so they can learn what a real 5-star experience is like. They should have paid less attention on their granite staircases and more on their service and food. Glenmere: please polish your service and food; or bring it down a notch and quit being pretentious, you can't have both. read more

Glenmere Mansion is a special occasion, grand place to dine. My family went recently for their Sunday Champagne Brunch, a $65 prix fixe three course offering. You approach Glenmere by traveling up a long drive to an early 20th Century Italianate mansion. The place reeks of opulence in a nice way. The grounds are set at the top of a hill and are well manicured. Service people abound. Someone is quick to take your car- you are pleasantly greeted at the front door and escorted to the dining room. The dining room and all the interior spaces are beautifully appointed and overlook a lake in the distance. Service throughout our meal was plentiful and pleasant. I never felt rushed nor did I find it officious or overbearing like some have commented. Once we placed our order, a delicious bread basket was delivered to the table with a medley of croissants, bicuits and two types of muffins. All were good. Accompanying them were butter and two kinds of spreads; one champagne strawberry and the other apple golden raisin. That's also when they lured our first glass of champagne- a decent Louis Perdrier Brut. Surprisingly, our glasses were refilled throughout the meal. We were then presented with an amuse bouche of a chilled Cream of Corn Soup with Roasted Peppers and Chives. The selections for Brunch ranged from breakfasty to lunch like offerings. The people at our table selected both. Two started with a fresh English Pea soup accented with Smoked Chicken and Chanterelles. Two opted for Pecan Encrusted French Toast and two Butter Poached Shrimp Oscar- a rich dish of shrimp layered on top of asparagus enrobed in Hollandaise sauce topped with a mini crab cake and a dollop of caviar. All the first courses were uniformly excellent. For the main course we again split between breakfast and lunch items. Three of us had Lobster Benedict, a decadent take on the classic. It was delicious though one of my poached eggs was a bit overcooked. Another at our table had a Smoked Salmon tart which someone at the table remarked looked like smoked salmon on a flying carpet. The salmon was on top of the tart and not baked in so it maintained the texture of smoked fish. The salmon was great. I don't know if it was house made. The last two entrees were beef ravioli and hangar steak and eggs. Both got positive reviews from our tablemates. Our dessert choices were Chocolate Nutella Profiteroles, Dark Chocolate Mousse, and a trio of sorbets and ice cream. The two chocolate desserts were winners. The ice cream and sorbet were less successful, since they were both a little icy. I think the ice cream was the better of the two since the flavors were stronger. Overall it was a great meal in a great setting. There were a few minor lapses in food and service that lead to the four stars, but they truly were minor. We went for the Thursday night wine pairings dinner. It's a great value as we would not have ordered a different wine for each course but this is included in the fixed price deal. It always feels like a million at Glenmere Mansion to dine in an elegant room with simply impeccable food, service, wine. The crowd is mature and well dressed. It's a real treat for a special occasion. Every detail including coffee at the end of the meal was perfection. You can't go wrong. Setting is in rural beauty of upstate Orange County NY. This place is epic. Unmatched service. Everything tastes amazing. It's an experience. The only "issue" I have is the disparity in the sizes of portions. I'm NOT a quantity person but if you are spending $500 on dinner for 2, you shouldn't leave hungry. Most recently My husband had duck and I short ribs. He had to share his duck with me. Mind you the short ribs were one of the more delicious things I'd ever tasted! Everything tastes so so good you don't want the meal to end. I've been hesitant to write this review for some time. I have been to Glenmere Mansion twice with my wife for weekend trips, and we've been invited to friends events and parties on occasion. It's beautifully kept and pristine. A great place to spend a few days. However, each time we visit, one of the owners, Alan, is very inappropriate. He is incredibly pompous and only seems to care if you are well-to-do or famous. My wife happens to be quite well-known, so he's always incredibly nice to us. But I have seen him act rude, callous and obnoxious to several guests. He's continuously bragging about the clientele that stay there, and the events they host.  He name drops quite a bit. The last time we were there, he was particularly vile to an older woman who was checking out and seemed to have a hearing issue.  It was upsetting, and frankly, it's the reason I am writing thIs. I usually never write reviews, but my wife and I have been so taken aback by his behavior overall, I felt like it needed to be said. I am a big supporter of local businesses, but in this case, I can no longer support a place with an owner who doesn't respect all types of people. It's a shame. read more

In mid-October I rented a car with my boyfriend and drove through the Southern Hudson Valley. Down rural river roads, past old stone walls and pastoral overlooks that looked honest-to-goodness like something painted out of the Hudson River School. The leaves were starting to turn. Our destination was Glenmere Mansion, about an hour and a half north of New York City. We pulled up the stone driveway of this Relais & Chateaux property and entered a different era - the Gatsby Era - the Gilded Age - full of sophistication and decadence. Glenmere was originally built as a country home for Robert Goelet (real estate heir) in 1911. Andrew Harper recently wrote about the property in his Hideaway Report. Charles, greeted us. He informed us that he was Glenmere's butler and that we had the place to ourselves as there were no other reservations for the night. It was a Monday. As we were unpacking for a few days of being spoiled-to-death we discovered that we had forgotten our toothbrushes. No worries, just ring the butler! Moments later Charles brought up two toothbrushes on a silver platter. The owners of Glenmere have filled the mansion with incredible art and and artifacts from their travels. Upon hearing that Helen Frankenthaler was one of my favorite painters, Charles showed us three of her prints. We explored the mansion. Completed a puzzle in the library. Paged through a few art books. Tried to remember the rules to Backgammon. Hiked trails and hung around in the hammock. Listened to the woodpecker. It felt like we were a million miles away from it all. As remote and relaxing as it is - Glenmere has all of the state-of-the-art technology, too: Bluetooth-compatible AV systems, large flat-screen TVs, DVD players, iPod docking stations, and high-speed Internet access. It's interesting how seemlessly 21st century technology co-exists with old world amenities. We ate dinner in the tavern. There are many wonderful, homey things to eat at the Frog's End, but only one thing you really need to know: Lobster Mac & Cheese. We breakfasted alone the next morning (eggs benedict, strawberry scones, pot after pot of french press coffee). The morning after was the same. It was all very quiet, very elegant, and a little surreal. We were assured that the weekends bring lots of "City" traffic to Glenmere. And just Sunday night the entire place had been rented for a private wedding. It was like we had snuck into the Gatsby's house while he was away. read more

Where do I begin? I will start by saying this place is truly amazing!!! My husband found this place on the Relais & Chateau website and decided to include it on the last leg of our 16 day vacation in July. Well we definitely saved the best for last! We arrived at Glenmere and were immediately impressed with the rolling grounds. As we pulled up to the mansion I had to pinch myself to remind me that we were not in Italy but in Chester, NY. We were greeted by Trever, the butler as he is referred to, who made us feel like we arrived at our Italian Villa. I knew right then and there that our 5 day stay was not going to disappoint. Trever showed us to our room, the Princess Suite, and we were in awe from the decor, warmth, beautiful bathroom and delicious home baked assorted cookies prepared by their Chef. We were then taken on a tour of the palatial grounds. From the beautiful manicured gardens, Tennis/Bocce ball courts and Croquet, elegant spa, fantastic pool area, the Cortille (the courtyard were we ate most of our delicious meals), living area and a small but great gym. We couldn't be more excited that this was the right choice! Let's talk food, every meal was incredible! Each morning for breakfast they brought out fresh baked right out of the oven muffins and scones, the best coffee I have ever had and a menu with wonderful breakfast selections. The best part was not only did they cater to my special requests, scrambled egg whites with a side of yummy smoked Salmon and fresh mixed berries, but breakfast is included. Their lunch menu as well as their dinner menu has fabulous choices of items coming from local Hudson Valley producers. And if you are a burger lover ask for their secret burger menu. It offers burgers that are off the charts good! Dinner was always our favorite meal. From the fantastic wine selection presented by Christian or Barbie, to the specials offered that evening told by such professional servers like Nicholas or Joanna, dining their was special! The entire staff did a perfect job of catering to their guests and acknowledging you by name. But most importantly we felt very safe as Glenmere takes Covid seriously. They took every measure to assure their guests that the necessary protocols were in place. Since our first visit the end of July, we have been back two more times for mini getaways. For us it is only a one hour drive from our NJ home. And it won't be the last time as we already booked a few nights for the end of October. This place is truly a hidden gem!!!! read more

In terms of spending a few nights away without a long trip, Glenmere is stellar. The owners have exquisite taste and the attention to detail is phenomenal. The staff is pleasant, attentive, but not intrusive. For all its luxury, you feel like a very welcome guest in a beautiful home. The estate itself deserves 5 stars, but for this site one must think specifically of the dining experience! The food was very good. I read the other reviews, and perhaps things have changed since August because we were not disappointed with any of our meals, and we ate lunch, dinner and breakfast at the estate. The dinner menu is fairly straight forward and the meals had a few areas that could use improvement, but it's elegantly presented, and my duck dish was quite delicious. The spare rib was the less impressive meal, but I find this dish is rarely remarkable, with a few exceptions. I would give my duck an 8.5 out of 10, and the spare rib a 7. Once the spa opens, I think this will become even more of a gem. The owners seem to enjoy perfection, based on the decor and the overall experience, so I am confident the food will continue to improve. I will definitely visit again. read more

Have been there several times and truly enjoy the grounds and the wine pairings. However, last Thursday I invited 2 other couples to join us in the supper room. All went very well with the food and wine pairing. Our wait staff Sara who worked our table must have been having a very bad night. Our friends commented several times that she is rude. My guest heard her using the F - word while she was returning from the rest room and had stopped her conversation with the other staff member when my guest was spotted. She had knocked over a wine glass on our table that was thankfully emptied and never apologized . She also charged us for someone else bar tab and made lite of it when we brought it to her attention. She did fix it for us; but I do have to say I felt embarrassed for her. Please coach her to be professional with her customers and remind her why she has a job there. Thank you. read more

Luxurious refurbished manor/estate ,aiming to cater to a well heeled clientele. Our group of eight made reservations for dinner( not as overnight guests) to celebrate a reunion ...we had arranged to have dinner at Glenmere's magnificently appointed dining room.... we came more for the ambience ra ther than the food which in my culinary opinion had been barely a level above pedestrian in the past and far from memorable. The fois gras needed dissecting instruments and a microscope to find the pate. The real issue with Glenmere is the management attitude with an inability to accommodate any special needs of Glenmere`s dining guests as opposed to their overnight guests ...We were placed outdoors in 85 degree heat even though we specifically had arranged for indoor seating 2 months earlier...Having arrived we were told that their dining room cannot accommodate a table for eight . Curiously outdoor guests also are precluded from having biscuits or muffins a policy that bewildered all of us, since they had bread plates and butter knives set on the outdoor tables( they actually only have biscuits , since they don't serve bread or rolls to their outdoor guests) or even their indoor guests.. ...when we challenged the rationale of this idiosyncratic policy we were told that we didn't have to stay....Moreover, we were told by Alan,their manager/owner, or whatever, that we are not a "bread restaurant" ...when we opined that all fine restaurants seem to serve bread or rolls....Alan, haughtily retorted that " I guess we are not a fine restaurant"...guess what, Alan?...You are absolutely right!...You are a BAD restaurant and should only cater to your overnight guests rather than dealing with the local "rabble" who normally would not tolerate your high tariffs without the usual amenities .In reality we were dealing with a skewed management/ attitude problem which will infuse itself into all facets of this otherwise lovely setting created at immense cost..the food was okay except for the foie gras which needed a culinary upgrade..our service by Elisa was professional and somewhat apologetic.... I could say more,but it would fall on deaf ears anyway... Of course we we would never return and would never recommend this restaurant to our" foodie" friends. PS...I believe this is the worst review I've ever submitted to Yelp, Zagat, or Open table on any restaurant ..I usually ignore bad restaurants and tout the good ones...but this place really "pissed" me off. read more

I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. We have been to this establishment numerous times, and have even recommended it to friends in the past, but our last experience there was so negative I am permanently taking this restaurant off of our list. We went their for Valentines day with 2 other couples anticipating a wonderful meal. We were completely disappointed. On a weekly basis Glenmere offers a $65 price fix menu (4 courses). Generally that is a very good deal. On valentines day they jacked that price up to $125 per person. Figuring they would offer something to justify that price we happily made our reservations. The meal was a complete joke. Seriously, it was like an episode from Seinfeld. Let me start off with the service. Our waiter seemed like one of the Valet guys who they threw into the restaurant to cover someones shift. He had very little knowledge of the evenings menu. He wasn't friendly and he barely gave us the level of service you would expect from an establishment like this. He never offered us drinks and he never came back to check on us. Our dishes sat in front of us after our meal as if our table was invisible. There wasn't a busboy in site either. At these prices I would have expected some pretty serious service, apparently not. OK, so lets talk about the food. When our dishes came out we all just started laughing. The portions were so small it appeared that we were being "punked". I have never in my life been served portions this small. Now don't get the wrong idea, we are not big portion eaters and I truly believe in "quality" over "quantity" in a restaurant, but these portions were so tiny that you were done with your plate in 2 forkfuls. For my entrée I had the monkfish and lobster dish. There were two small pieces of monkfish (the size of a scallop) and two very small pieces of lobster (looked like a tiny claw cut in half). Are you kidding me? Anywhere else I would have been served a 2-3lb lobster for these process but at the Glenmere it got me a small tiny claw, lol. The rest of the entrees were similar in size. The quality of the food was marginal at best. If you are going to have the nerve to serve portions this small then you better blow us away with taste - not here, the food just wasn't very good. Some of the dishes were so poorly prepared that despite the fact we were all starving we ended up leaving a lot of it uneaten. What is the management thinking? With tip and a maybe 1 drink each our bill came to $340 per couple. When is the last time you paid $340 for a meal? I have dined everywhere and I can't remember ever paying that kind of money for a meal, especially since we had only 1 drink each. How does the management justify the price increase from $65 up to $125 without anything being added? Is Valentines day such a premium that it justifies that? To top it off, half of the restaurant was empty. Wake up Glenmere, you are killing yourself. The grounds and the buildings on this property are amazing, but that doesn't give them the right to so blatantly rip off their customers. Don't ever go here. read more

I remember when they first opened few years ago. When you wanted to stop in for lunch or dinner they would not allow you in, saying that they don't want "local clientele". Are you kidding me? Well...few years passed and the time showed that they were wrong counting only on New York City people and rich Corps' CEOs. Bad economy proved them wrong and forced this place to accept anyone walking in their door. Now they even advertise in the local papers because they want anybody to come in and eat. But besides the beautiful decor ( furniture and all that ) and the view of Glenmere Lake they don't have much to offer. You can really have a better steak at Outback ( unless you like to overpay ). They forgot that this is not France and the food portions need to be larger ( American people love to eat ). The prices for the hotel, per night are also an absurd. I don't think the owners will ever get their money back (the millions of dollars they borrowed and invested in this place) and they eventually will be looking for a new owner. But give it a try, see for yourself... read more

DISAPPOINTING! I went to the Frog's End for dinner and would not go back. I went in with high expectations but left completely unimpressed. The employees all seemed very flustered and unsure about what they were doing. The valet was running around in circles, even though they were not busy and the hostess seemed frazzled. The waitress was charmless and had a bit of an attitude. I was expecting professional and attentive service but was treated more like a nuisance. There really wasn't any attention to customer service. We carried our coats around until finally asking someone to take them. Dinner was... Bad. We had the shortrib flatbread appetizer which just tasted like barbeque sauce. For our entrees we ordered the stuffed chicken and the lamb sausage papardelle. We wanted to share the entrees but the waitress advised that there is a $5/per plate to share. I could understand if we were splitting one entree, but we both ordered an entree and they wanted to charge $10 to cut them in half and put on separate plates... tacky! The chicken was dry, flavorless, and stuffed with some kind of mushy mess that I couldn't identify. The lamb sausage dish was also very dry. The sausage looked like it was just torn into random sized bits and thrown on the plate (very unappetizing). There was no sauce, so the undercooked pasta was also very dry. Neither entree had any flavor and the portions were very small (which is fine because the food was awful). Perhaps the food at the other restaurant is better, but the Frog's End was terrible. Fish dry & overseasoned Wine horrid, definitely NOT the marque we requested and paid for. Bottle never brought out, no presentation or decanting at table. We were given a house pour instead of the $130+ bottle for which we paid. Service fine Management outlandishly rude, told us not to come back if we didn't approve of wine. Definitely set up as a front for something altogether different involving lavish rooms and confidentiality guarantees. We have stayed and dined at several Relais and Chateaux establishments and it baffles me how this place could earn the prestigious accolade. The food was sub par and at times inedible. Before our interaction with owner, Alan Stenberg, our party of 6 thought this place was wonderful and couldn't wait to refer this getaway to friends. After interacting with Alan, we will never return. Please do not waste your time or money eating at the Glenmere Mansion. Owner, Alan Stenberg did everything in his power to make our stay uncomfortable, including following us up to our room and having a security man watch us eat breakfast the next morning. Rather then bending over backwards to accommodate us for our bad meals, he defended the fishy salmon and mealy tomatoes. I have never in my life been spoken to so rudely. I felt as if we were being verbally assaulted. If he thinks "this hotel will be the best in the world", he has another thing coming. read more

I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed that they can't accommodate special dietary needs with their wine pairing meal. I understand needing advanced notice, but even when I called weeks in advance, they said they can't make changes in the menu and I'd need to order from the 5 course menu. Which is fine, but very disappointing. We love the wine pairing meal and they made dietary accommodations for me once, but they won't do it again. Such a shame. I don't always have the appetite for a whole 5 course meal but I certainly would love to go for the wine pairing meal more frequently. I hope they realize that the hallmark of great service is flexibility. Not everyone is the same. We would visit more frequently if only you were a bit more flexible with the menu! read more
