We had a great seat by the window. It was a beautiful view of the trees and leaves. Many flowers were still in bloom too, so it was a great spot to sit by the window. Our waiter Lance was excellent. Attentive but not annoying. Menu was varied and a good selection. They offer a complimentary cupcake for a persons birthday. We had the Brie app with crackers and it was heavenly so was the puff vegetable and Brie filled pastry !!! Pot stickers were very tasty as was the cream of broccoli soup. Everything was positive no complaints at all. Worth the drive out especially the view but summer or winter would be just has nice ! Stayed one night in the "Maple" suite. Totally comfortable and quiet! One of the best rooms in the joint. Had dinner on the porch watching fire flies and listening to the Middle Falls just over the the rock wall. Food was first-rate. Drinks were creative and excellent. Extremely underwhelmed by the food. They need a new head chef. Came here multiple times years ago and had a true fine dining experience (to this day some of the best lamb with a mint jelly that I've had). This time was a very different experience. Drove up just for the restaurant from Rochester for our anniversary. First thing I noticed was the menu was very boring, I don't know who's palette they're cooking for but nothing interesting or special on the menu, more interesting dishes at an Applebee's. I ordered the seared ahi tuna with crackers ($16) as the appetizer and the Parmesan crusted scallops ($28) as my entree (the special for the day), my girlfriend had the charcuterie board ($28) because she wasn't hungry for a full meal. The tuna was okay, literally no seasoning on it and barely a crust from being seared, basically just sashimi with dry flavorless crackers. The charcuterie was okay portion wise, but was only 2 kinds of sausage, a cheddar and a Swiss cheese and a small pile of pickled veggies, we were definitely expecting some more interesting meats and cheeses for $28. The scallops were by far the worst thing I could have ordered. I expected the scallops to be breaded or seared or to at least have been broiled to the point that the parm was brown but it was just melted over the top, and they were in a sauce that I could only describe as butter and water? Literally flavorless other than plain Parmesan, no garlic, no lemon, no spices, i don't even think any salt was used. They were served with mashed potatoes which were okay but also needed salt added (usually unnecessary for me anywhere but home cooked meals) and green beans that actually had no salt on them, or any other spices or flavors to speak of. I've raved and talked about the glen iris a lot over the years because the atmosphere, with the falls and the antique decor combined with the formerly stellar food was actually something special. If the meal had been $50 I wouldn't be complaining, the service was standard and the food was edible, but for an over $100 tab, I expect the food to be at least interesting attempts at dishes if not a stellar experience. Needless to say I won't be recommending the restaurant to anyone again and next time I want a nice meal I'll go to one of the nice restaurants in Rochester. And to anyone reading this, I'm really not trying to bash the place, the park is great, I used to love the restaurant and I'm sure staying at the inn may be a nice experience, but I would just really suggest not spending the money on eating here unless some drastic changes are made to the menu. I feel that the many positive reviews may be due to the older crowd that tends to be the key demographic, as I know that sometimes that age group tends to be sensitive to salt and spices and might prefer a more bland meal, but I noticed the flavorless complaint is a common one if you look back at the poor reviews. read more

A unique get away, A small historical boutique hotel built in 1859 and uzzes history as you walk up the creaking staircase of the hotel. No, it's not haunted as far as I could tell..There is limited cell phone service, the hotel does have wi-fi, which we had no issues with, but if you can manage you may want to just try to do without and enjoy the parks beautiful scenery . The Hotel has only 15 rooms so advanced reservations is a must especially during the peak season in the fall when the leaves turn, and I highly suggest you reserve one of the larger rooms because most are "very small". The Hotel sits in front of a beautiful water falls and grounds are very scenic with hiking trails steps from the hotel. The Hotel restaurant is very nice, buys from local farmers and is very reasonably priced. We only had a chance to have breakfast which was excellent and no breakfast exceeded $11.00. If you don't care about room size, ask for the Linden, or referred to as the " left over room " you may be able to get it for $60.00 a nite. The do a big wedding business so if you book during the weekend, expect to run into one, but was not an issue for us. No negative experiences, the staff was very friendly and I look forward to going back in the future. read more

My husband and I had our wedding here, and we could not have imagined a better place to get married! We got rave reviews from all of our guests. The rooms were wonderful, the staff was beyond accommodating (they literally catered to our every need!) and extremely professional. The setting is breathtaking - the Glen Iris overlooks middle falls in Letchworth State Park. The only two things that were slightly less than perfect were the food (the chicken florentine/green beans almandine were overcooked and flavorless) and they do have a lot of weddings there - so you won't be the only bride you see all weekend. That didn't bother me, but it might bother some. Denise is the wedding coordinator, and Molly is her assistant - they were both extremely knowledgeable and attentive. I am a hometown girl and was very excited to take my friend to the inn for dessert. I was so excited that Buzz had come to take over the pastries there. That was the best move the Glen Iris ever made. The better than shortcake is by far my FAVORITE dessert of all times. You must try it. I will start the next part of my review by saying the manager comped our desserts for our experience which is why I gave them 2 stars besides the fact that my dessert was amazing as usual. We entered the inn to get a table in the dining room. When I told the hostess that we were there for dessert ( now mind you the dining room was fairly empty and it was midday) we were told to go wait on the porch and someone would come to get us. I thought when our table was ready they would come to get us. We waited for a very long time next to another couple that were there. The server arrived 20 minutes later flustered because she had never worked the porch before. Astonishingly she took our orders from the porch. Now let me say there are no tables there only Adirondack chairs. No silverware nothing. After 45 minutes we finally summon a served to find out what is going on. The people next to us had been there 20 minutes before us and still did not have their appetizers. 10 minutes later the dessert arrives but no silverware. We wait another 15 minutes for anyone to come back and finally the hostess came out and was walking back in and we asked her for silverware. Now its HOT outside we are holding our dessert plates and no silverware. The hostess asked us if we wanted 3 sets of silverware???????? Which we had three in our party soooooo Yeah. We also ordered coffee but were never given cream and sugar after we asked for it 3 times. We finally just gave up on the coffee. It is a must see spot during a visit at the park, you can't miss it as it is located right by the middle falls viewing spot. The Inn is beautiful, and there is a reason a wedding was planned to occur later in the day. This place is a restaurant and hotel, and I am told by my NY friends that you must reserve well in advance to get a spot to eat. The restaurant space is quite spacious and spread between two rooms, there are also a couple of spots outside to eat. Everyone in my party enjoyed the food, I just ordered the wrong thing. My husband took pity on my unimaginative bland salmon salad, and offered up his delicious fries. Everything else looked and sounded great. It was great atmosphere at this 18th century inn. We had lunch and the service was a bit slow but we were vacationing and didn't mind. We ordered wine and cocktails and they were good. I ordered the salmon entree and my boyfriend ordered the special entree, and both were good and came with good veggie sides. The cost was quite good for the setting. The entrees were $14/15, and there were salads and sandwiches for less. Lots of options. Many reviews say the food wasn't good but that wasn't our experience at all and would recommend it. We stopped for lunch after hiking. The lunch prices were reasonable $10-$14 per plate. I got the soup of the day, which was loaded bake potato. It was delicious. My friends got the stuffed mushrooms and fried ravioli. Everyone thought the food was pretty good. The wine was $7-8 a glass and the glass size was very generous. We also had the burger, the Philly cheesesteak and the panini of the day. Everything was tasty. The waiter was very attentive. We (wife and I) decided to drive through Letchworth on a whim on our way back to Buffalo. Turns out it was during the Arts & Crafts festival (Columbus Day Weekend), so probably their busiest week of the year. A family member works at the Glen Iris as a server, so we wanted to stop in for a surprise. We called ahead to see if they would be able to seat us at some point in the day. The lady on the phone was incredibly rude and short, and declined any chance of requesting said family member as a server. So knowing it was possibly the busiest day of the year, we understood the decline of our request, but the hostess also made zero attempt at accommodating us; said they had no room, and didn't suggest when there would be an open table. We showed up hoping for the best, Went to the hostess station to put our names in and sure enough the grumpy lady was there. It only ended up being a 10 minutes wait. She walked up to the table, tossed our menus on the table and scoffed "Enjoy your lunch". After watching her seat customers throughout the meal, not once did I see her crack a smile. Now being in our late 20s, I guess we aren't the typical clientele of the restaurant, but thats no excuse for treating us with such disrespect, especially when both are pretty friendly people. That all said, our food was great as well as our server. The menu has lots of comfort food options to choose from. I ordered the Monte Cristo sandwich, while my wife had the burger. Great air conditioning after walking in 100 degree temps and humidity outside! The food was delicious - I had the filet mignon which was cooked to my taste (came with a pat of black Hawaiian sea salt & cracked black pepper compound butter) with scrumptious garlic mashed potatoes and roasted brussel sprouts. My friend had Shrimp Genesee - jumbo shrimp filled with feta cheese, wrapped in bacon, served on wilted spinach, in a light lemon cream sauce. That was delicious also. Beautiful location, so so food, terrible room. On the plus side, the room and bath were probably the cleanest I've ever seen at a hotel, and I have traveled a lot. That goes a long way in my book. The minus side, however, overshadows any positive. Room was tiny, but that's expected for a Victorian hotel. However, our room was extraordinarily small, with absolutely no walking room to the sides of the bed. And it had the most uncomfortable bed i've (not) slept in in quite a while. It sagged in the middle, rocked with every slight movement, and was situated on an uneven floor. In addition, our room was right next to a wooden staircase, and we could hear all of the guests climbing to their room. No wifi available, and no cell service in its location. In addition, the whole reservation process was archaic. We had someone book a block of rooms. They were not told upfront that there would be a charge to move a room to another name. And the process to do so was ridiculous. Finally, they moved the Couple that we were with to three different rooms in three nights. They had the reservation since March, yet they couldn't give them one room? Come on! To the Glen Iris, a lot would be forgiven if you just had comfortable beds! read more

So disappointed. Went there with another family to celebrate a graduation. There were 9 of us. They felt we needed a waiter and a waitress. They talked at the same time, each took orders from 1/2 of the table, talked over each other and were slow. Food was ok. They never asked how it was. We asked to split the tip in 2. They gave one person a check for $80.00 and another one for $270.00. If they said, hey, our guy is new- do you mind if we have someone monitor him, we would have been great with that. We decided to try the Glen Iris for dinner after walking in the park, seemed pricey but really quaint and a nice change of pace. The Good: The restaurant is very pretty, open and inviting inside, and of course the setting is breathtaking, overlooking the middle falls. Our server was very friendly, and confessed it was only her second day, so we cut her a lot of slack knowing she was learning. The warm bread and butter was good, and the coffee was excellent. The Bad: The menu was a tad limited in selection, with some bizarre selections that seemed like they were trying to be fancy for fancy's sake. We both ordered the strip steak with garlic herb potatoes and asparagus. None of the food really had any flavor at all, we had to use steak sauce, ketchup, salt and pepper and it still was bland and flavorless. If you try to order drinks, other than the overpriced wine, you don't have a list or menu to go by, and the waitress was not familiar, but again she was still learning. She did go out to the veranda to get a drink list, but once we'd ordered it took a very long time to arrive. Service in general was slow, especially considering there were very few patrons. Overall, the food is very disappointing, expensive, and the service mediocre. Save your time and money and pack a picnic lunch to eat while enjoying the park. read more

When I made the reservation the hotel neglected to tell me there was a wedding the same night so the room we got was the size of a box! No television, one chair and nowhere to even relax or even store my suitcase aside from the fact we were on the 3rd floor They management did nothing to help when I asked for a different room not only that they were nasty and unprofessional. The cheese plates included cubes of the most boring and routine cheeses possible: cheddar, swiss and plain gouda. No soft cheeses, no blue cheeses, mo interesting cheese st all! The cheeses they did have tasted like they were sliced off an industrial block of industrial cheese. The fruit served on the plates was grapes, which were fresh and flavourful--probably because rhe local store carries fresh local grapes. Any Tops or Wegmans in the area carries a great variety of cheese these days--the buyers are clearly either cheap or lazy or both. We advised the seating hostess (older woman) that we would not be having a full dinner, just so they were aware ahead of time.. However, upon stating that to her , she said the we could sit on the patio or a side room that sells merchandise. Because of the wind and cold, we opted for indoors. It was very uncomfortable at best and the people that entered to look at the merchandise for sale, seemed also uncomfortable, as if intruding on our meal. Never again. Not the way to win friends and influence people. Get a new hostess.....one who enjoys the people who pay her salary! However..............Glen Iris Inn is still marvelous, regardless. read more

Had a romantic dinner here just last weekend. Given the gorgous summer weather, the falls, the lovely grounds, and the gorgeous Letchworth mansion, you couldn't help but consider any dinner here romantic if you're the slightest bit interested in your dinner partner. I'd give the place a good rating. Unlike some raters, I had a good meal. I'd give it a five just for the service and ambience, but factoring in the food, well, I'm a hard grader and there were a few flaws. There were many positives to the visit. There is a great wine menu with plenty of NY wines to choose from at reasonable prices, the staff didn't rush us even though we were the next to last seating (they stop seating at 8:30 pm), the view was lovely, and the food was generally excellent with generous portions and nicely presented. One of the other nice points was that the waitress let us order cocktails without rushing us to decide right then on our appetizers and entrees. I wanted a leisurely dining experience and she afforded me that luxury. Thank you. My cocktail was a solidly made Manhattan with Marker's Mark whiskey; my dinner partner had a vodka martini with Grey Goose vodka. The bar has good liquor NOT bottom shelf stuff (which I expected at a state park facility). After an acceptable wait, the waitress returned to take our food and wine order. An appetizer opens the meal. Unfortunately, my appetizer just flopped. My complaint is that the crabmeat stuffed mushrooms with hollandaise sauce was "bleah." The mushroom stuffing was mostly bread - I couldn't taste the crabmeat or even feel a textural difference. The hollandaise sauce wasn't hollandaise sauce, it tasted like chicken gravy. On the other hand, my dinner partner opted for the tomato and mozzarella tower. He was pleased with it, saying the tomato was a delicously ripe summer tomato, the cheese was soft and fresh, and the balsamic reduction with fresh basil was perfect. For an entree I ordered the herb crusted rack of lamb -- the 4 baby ribs were delicious and clearly baby lambs, not yearling lambs. Cooked rare, like I ordered it, with a delectable rosemary and herb crust and mint jelly on the side. The garlicky green beans were fantastic; cooked but not limp and obviously fresh, not frozen. The mashed potatos were acceptable but not outstanding. My dinner partner had the salmon steak with hollandaise sauce. He deemed it to be excellent, "cooked perfectly and moist;" and the serving to be "generous." From my vantage, I agreed. The hollandaise sauce he got was hollandaise sauce - I checked. It was totally different from the "hollandaise" that came with my stuffed mushrooms, ergo I assume there was a plating mistake with my appetizer. What a pity. We had two flights of wine with dinner. A flight was 3 1/3 (closer to 1/2) glasses of wine. It gave us a chance to taste three different red wines (actually six since we shared) with dinner. One flight was NY organic reds and one was NY reds. I wish I could remember the wineries. I also was happy that when the waitress brought them to the table she told us that one of them (the house organic red) may not be to our liking. She thought it was bit "thin," so if after we tasted it we wanted an different type, she'd be happy to accomodate us. Well, she was right. It was thin without any body at all (hey, it happens) so off it went and she brought us a replacement glass. That thoughtfulness impressed me. Dessert was an english style custard with cherries. The cherries were delicious but the custard was a bit dry. There was coffee, but no espresso as apparently the machine is broken. Pity. By area standards, the meal was pricey. Our daughters enjoyed their meals, a kids menu burger and St. Helena Chicken. The wine I picked went well with everything. The one thing that bothered me, and is no fault of the restaurant's, is that people and their kids come here dressed terribly! Beautiful location, terrible experience. We were there 2 weeks ago with family from Europe. We stopped at the Inn in the early afternoon for drinks and appetizers. We were told by the hostess we would have to stay out on the porch. and be served there. It was very, very hot out with the sun beating down on the porch. We soon asked to sit at the tables on the side which were shaded but we were told we could not by the waiter if we were not ordering lunch. After a few minutes of sweltering, we went in and asked the hostess to seat us inside, she reluctantly seated us at the only table without silverware or napkins since we were not ordering lunch. No one else was in the dining room. We had to ask for a couple of times after our appetizers were served for tableware. We then checked into our rooms at the Pinewood Lodge which is part of the Glen Iris Inn. It's old, the air conditioner was extremely loud, the towels were shoddy. I know air conditioners are costly to replace but old, discolored scratchy towels are an easy fix. Dinner that night at the Inn was okay - food was bland, service was okay. The next morning we checked out the 2 women at the checkout counter never said "good morning," smiled or asked how our stay was. We then went to breakfast at the dining room, mostly empty restaurant. The waitress tried to seat us next to the service area. We asked for a better table and immediately got it. Service and breakfast food were good. We spent a lot of money here, we came for the experience of the Inn and the beauty of the park, the staff at the Glen Iris marred the experience. read more

The staff was so friendly and accommodating, and were glad to seat us even with no reservation. The food was superb! I would like to review the food served at this restaurant but unfortunately, I was never given any. My family and I had reservations here after my brother's college graduation and had a pretty horrible experience as I think many other parties did that night. First of all, we had a reservation was for 7:00 pm and when we got there we were given a pager as there was not a table ready for us for about 20 minutes. When we finally got a table it was right outside the kitchens doors so we got the pleasure of getting our chairs bumped into by every member of the wait staff as well as the constant fear of a poorly-balanced tray falling on our heads. After sitting at our table for probably another twenty minutes I couldn't tell you who our waiter or waitress was still. I was ready to go fill my water glass from the waterfall outside. There was significant time between ordering drinks, getting drinks, and getting our order taken to the point where our drinks were empty most of the night and when the waitress finally came around she took our glasses without asking if we wanted a refill. So after ordering our meals (very simple meals--salads, quesadillas, chicken dishes) we waited...and waited...and waited... until 8:45 when we still had no food. I saw no other table around us with entrees but instead a lot of unhappy faces. No staff member-including the manager- could give us an eta on the food. I imagine if this was an episode of Kitchen Nightmares Gordon Ramsey would have shut down the kitchen by now. The manager comped our drinks and we left hungrily after two hours at this restaurant. I am a very patient person and have never left a restaurant before without eating, so this place is a special kind of awful. 0/10 would not recommend. read more

My husband and I spent the night at the in for our anniversary. At first check in everyone seemed friendly and willing to help you if needed. That changed when you actually needed something. The room was small and the decor did not match the rest of the inn. The wallpaper was peeling off the walls and some of the ceiling was patched badly. Just felt disappointed that I spent the amount I did for the room. We ended up not getting a reservation for dinner, since we had other dinner plans, but we were looking forward to having some coffee and dessert on the porch. We told the hostess and were told to just go sit on the porch and a waitress would help us. We saw the waitress and it took her over 5 mins to get over to us since she was chit chatting to another person. When she came over to us she greeted us by saying "What do you want?" I ordered us coffee and asked to see a dessert menu. She left and came back with the coffee and forgot the menu so she went back for it. Well that took well over 20 mins for her to come back out. When I asked again for the menu she told me they were done serving food. I left it at that since I was just trying to enjoy our anniversary. During the day a wedding party showed up and took over the shared library for the inn shut out the rest of the guests there. When I mentioned it to the front desk they said it's OK it was the wedding party so they could. I just shook my head and kept my mouth shut yet again. In the morning they serve free coffee / tea and my husband went to get some coffee and was told off by one of the workers because he was in her way of checking on the tea water. I would not recommend this inn for an overnight stay based on my experience. The only thing that the inn has going for it is the park. read more
