Worth a detour! The…read moreCottage Restaurant just happened to be near the country house my family rented. Located in quaint little Jamestown, it's set alongside the river, with cows grazing alongside the bank. To call it idyllic doesn't quite capture -- it's ridiculously charming. I emailed to secure a booking a few weeks before as we had 6 adults and a child for a Friday evening -- they replied quickly and we were all set. We showed at our appointed time and were shown to a lovely nearly private table in the back room. All very smooth. My husband proclaimed "Best Meal in Ireland." (and he's eaten many after traveling/living there on and off for several years). And I must concur. A standout -- the Kids Menu! None of this garbage food to be found (chicken nuggets, etc). My son ate beef noodles fit for a king for about 6 euro. Unreal, it was so good my brother and husband were both sneaking bites of it. If you have kids, they shall not be disappointed here and you will not feel guilty giving them yet another plate of chips and grease! The Adult food was also exceptional! The duck was glorious! The steak a vision! There was not a miss in the bunch, and the complimentary starter and fresh made in-house bread basket was divine. A Malaysian Chef doing things up right over here in small town Ireland. A treat to be sure. If you are anywhere near -- make this a destination for your next dinner. One funny thing (which is totally fine) -- it may be the only eating/drinking establishment that does NOT serve Guinness. Totally ok for me, and it forced my dad to try some local brew, but worth nothing if you have any grumpy Guinness folks in the group! This ENTIRE amazing meal was 250 euros. This included wine, drinks, beers, multiple courses and a very happy kid eating beef noodles. A true value to be sure, everyone remarked that they thought it should cost far more -- so this really is a testament to great food at a great price.

It's a 2-floor establishment, with a restaurant in the basement and a pub on the main floor; with more paraphernalia and interesting knick-knacks to spend the rest of your stay examining... Now to the important part: the food! In a word, it's great! It can be tricky for me to find a decent vegetarian/vegan bite to eat in Ireland; luckily, Brendan, whose family owns the place (which, as the name hints at, used to be a hat factory), has knowledge of vegan food and could assure me that everything would be in order. As for my experience as a whole; I definitely enjoyed the atmosphere, and will visit again when I'm in Athlone! Definitely suitable for going on a date as well; the dimmed reddish lighting down the back creates an intimate atmosphere - and of course, everything is better when it has a story...

After drinks on the deck at Radisson Blu (also recommended) we had dinner at Hatters. All 3 of us were pleased with our selections, the bacon wrapped chicken was very good as were the other two mains (one had hake the other beef). Wines by the glass were reasonably priced and decent quality. Service was very good.

With so many different restaurants and crowds of people, I was lucky to find Quay Street Kitchen, which had delicious seafood in an intimate setting. I visited Quay Street Kitchen after the lunch rush, which worked well for me as I was able to be seated as soon as I entered, especially since the restaurant is small, so seating can be limited. The staff was super friendly and service was very fast. The menu featured a good amount of different classic, Irish dishes, including seafood specials. I ordered the mussels and when I asked for the large size, the friendly server told me there was no way I would be able to eat the large size on my own. Therefore, I went with the recommended smaller size. And the small size is indeed a huge portion. You could even share this with someone else. But you won't want to because the mussels were very delicious in a creamy broth that was perfect for dipping the bread in. Or fries, which I ordered on the side, and these were very crunchy and went well with the mussels. I can't recommend Quay Street Kitchen enough if you're in Galway. There are so many different restaurants around, but I can see why Quay Street Kitchen has such high ratings. Delicious food, friendly service and the setting doesn't at all feel touristy. It's intimate, charming and wonderful.

Looking at the others around us, hers was an anomaly unfortunately, but was still quite good. The GF meringue with berries was light, a nice touch to filling meals. The GF stags bán pale ale was nice. We were an early walk-in in December, come early if you want a seating, as several after us were turned away due to reservations already on the books. They seated us but asked we finish in 1-3/4 hours, which normally wouldn't be a problem. The place was delightful, a quaint small room. While the service didn't feel rushed, we struggled to get them to give us the check and help them turn their table in time for their reservation...they seemed more intent on us having a nice, leisurely time! :)
