There was a continuous stream of local fanfare and traditional Irish music playing for hours on end. We didn't want to leave after our meal so we stayed on in the lounge area up front next to the musicians to enjoy the scene up close and personal. The food was phenomenal - a bit on the pricey end but of the highest quality imaginable. We loved every bite from the soups to the salad, to the seafood. I'm so glad we were able to enjoy this restaurant a couple of times while we were staying in the area. It really is the best food around here! And the folks who work here and run the place were really friendly - Ireland is already one of the most hospitable places I've ever been to but this place really does well by its patrons, too!

Anytime we have eaten in Cafe Rua over the last 5 years or so we have never been disappointed, prices compete with Dublin but the quality far surpasses most cafes in the Dublin area. Their brown bread is the real stuff and the specials are very good, they serve a really good breakfast with sausages from artisan butcher in Newport - Kelly's (also reviewed, look it up!). Pate and salad, which is usually on the lunch menu is excellent. I really enjoyed the gubeen and spinach potato cakes on our last visit as did our baby who was happily accommodated in a very comfy baby chair (he couldn't escape, it was great!). They seem to have a main meal type thing on the menu daily eg bacon and cabbage or beef casserole and the desserts and pastries are fab!
